Be very cautious about master's degrees, including from prestigious universities. Some of my coworkers in their 30s are financially hobbled by these degrees.
Don't get an expensive master's degree unless you truly need it for career advancement (i.e., you have a very concrete and realistic plan of how you will pay for it). I am a teacher at a private boarding school in Massachusetts. A lot of my colleagues found themselves in the workforce for a few years, usually as teachers, then decided that their life felt stagnant and got a master's degree from places like Columbia or whatever. They figured it was a logical next move as a typical "striver" who wants to achieve the next milestone in life, assuming it would lead to new opportunities. Underrated fact: even at places like Harvard, many of these master's degrees are not particularly selective and will enroll almost any baseline smart/competent person - they're a cash cow for the university primarily used to fund their PhD programs! Anyways, these people end up in serious debt and forego earnings while getting the degrees, sometimes in excess of $100,000. And what did they do with their degree? They went back to teaching - basically the exact same job they already had with the same earning potential. I'm curious if this is a pattern in other lines of work - do any of your coworkers also randomly get masters degree at enormous expense that they don't put to good use? In my opinion you should only go to graduate school for a profession that truly requires the credential (JD, MD, etc), or if you get it funded (via a PhD program or through your employer). submitted by /u/NotAGoldenRetriever to r/personalfinance [link] [comments]

Paint sprayer
I need a paint sprayer. I used HF’s find a sprayer tool, but I’m still lost. I can’t tell if they do or don’t require an air compressor. Also- I went through a few guides, they don’t all clearly show the pressure of an air compressor if that is the power source. I saw this CENTRAL PNEUMATIC 20 oz. HVLP Gravity-Feed Air Spray Gun with Regulator, 1.4 mm Nozzle I want to paint a cabinet, random other medium to small items. I don’t need a professional grade one but I want to not have to refill it every ten minutes. i don't even know what to say
So I helped a guy at work yesterday. He was still in his own work uniform; a physical therapist at the local hospital. I work in a tool store. He's looking for paint sprayers, so I show him the options. I show him the as-is air sprayer. He jokes he doesn't want to make a career out of it. I laugh and say okay, here's the cheaper ones. Well, you need a air compressor, so I help him with that, too. He says thank you for how helpful I'm being, I say no problem, I'm happy to help. I show him the handheld sprayer we have that has a compressor built in for only 60 dollars. Next, he has a question about the bug sprayers. No biggie, I even recommended the insecticide I use, said it would be good for ants, too. Then he says, "You're pretty handy for a woman, you've been really helpful. Your husband must not do anything." I could not keep a straight face. Pressed my lips together and tried not to laugh at it all. I can't believe some people think it's okay to say those things. I'm not married, by the way. I'll admit he's marginally better than the guys who come in, look lost, I ask if they need anything, they say no, then go up to a male coworker not 10 feet away and suddenly have a question. But if it helps, sometimes guys come in and specifically ask, "Do you have a guy in here? I need to ask him a question." I smile bright and cheery, and say, "Sure!" Then get on the comm and say "I have someone who wants a guy to ask a question to." This has become code between all of us that the other female coworker who knows a lot more than I do, has and uses most of the tools we have in the store at home all the time... needs to come up and help a guy out :) So fun to watch that one, especially when it's just me and her because it's almost closing time. submitted by /u/Kimyr1 to r/TwoXChromosomes [link] [comments]

Paint sprayer for frequent small projects
My wife and I are frequently painting things that were replacing, fixing, or making around the house. Either cabinets, wood for projects, things we build etc. we are trying to find the best solution for spraying paint on various mostly wooden surfaced items. We've tried rollers and brushes of various qualities , but always had less than desirable results. I've seen hvlp, airless, and HTE style spray setups , from around $50 to $1k +. we have considered a small gun size sprayer (32oz capacity ) as that's all the paint we would need per project, but frequently read that these style sprayers are disposable. I don't understand why they can't be properly cleaned , but is this pretty much true across all makes and models of handheld units (non air compressor) ? Is there any "swiss army knife" style or type that we should be looking for? We don't need to paint cars, entire houses, or anything extreme, and "good enough" application of paint is fine for our needs. It seems like we need to paint something every few weeks so ideally I'd like to find a form factor that can be reused in a consumer setting multiple times. Thanks for any help 😃 submitted by /u/prime51000 to r/DIY [link] [comments]

Built the wife a library
My last post on this project was 8 months ago if that gives you any idea how long this took as a weekend warrior! Overall really happy with the end result, but more importantly the wife is thrilled. Was my first project of this size. Definitely made some mistakes along the way and generally just figured a lot of things out as I went. But wood filler and caulk is my friend, and the dark paint is forgiving. Some things I learned: • Nothing in my house is straight, square, or level. • Should have used plywood over pine. The pine was a pain to work with due to warping/cupping. Will see how it holds up over time. • I shouldn’t have used latex paint for bookshelves, but live and learn. Giving the paint a couple more weeks to fully cure before stacking any books. • The darker the paint, the more coats needed for full coverage. Everything was sanded, primed, sanded again, painted, sanded again, painted again for a good finish. Still a few spots to touch up. A sprayer would have been better but basements don’t offer much ventilation. • Wish I would have done butcher block or something more substantial for the “countertop” as the 3/4” pine just looks diminutive by comparison. • Did some basic rechargeable motion-sensor LED bars in the cabinets, but LED strips are on the way for the shelving. That’s another project entirely but I’ve planned in advance and built in some lips to hide the LED strips and will require minimal drilling of holes to run the wiring. submitted by /u/marcusdiddle to r/BeginnerWoodWorking [link] [comments]

New laundry nook in our 150yr old house! After/Before and Full Process
My wife's post on r/interiordecorating of our laundry nook took off, so here's a more in depth description of the work that went into the finished product. How would you fit a full size washer and dryer into a space less than 7'x7' with only one useable wall? Well, with a lot of planning! The previous solution had been to use a mini washer and dryer tucked into cabinets. These sucked in practice. Notice how you can't open the back door while using the dryer. Plus, we couldn't fit sheets in the washer and they were both kind of broken. This project involved a lot of different work. Here's a summary of each stage, but feel free to ask any questions in the comments! (Note: I am a construction electrician by trade, though this was my first time taking on each of these other skills for a project of this size) 1) Demo: This wasn't too bad, except that it revealed an uneven, un-level subfloor. Our home's foundation was reinforced at some point in the past and is solid, but it left a couple areas a bit too off level. Underneath some roughly stair stepped underlayment the sub-floor had about a 1.5" rise across the 7'. 2) Floor prep: I decided to do my own stair stepped underlayment with five 1/4" layers. I sealed everything up and finished it off with a THIN layer of self-leveler. I watched so many youtube videos in preparation for this step and it worked out great! I used Mapei Self Leveler Plus. I found this two minute video to be most helpful. 3) Tiling: A lot more youtube videos were consumed ahead of this job. This was all marble tile in 1' square sheets. I kept the sheets for larger areas and cut out strips or individual tiles elsewhere. The gray "flowers" are cut out and inlaid. I used Ardex X5 thinset and Ardex FGC unsanded grout in fresh lily. The uncoupling membrane is Blanke Permat, which I highly recommend for marble tile based on my research. 4) Plumbing: Only copper piping is allowed in my area, so that's what I ran. As for the drainage, that is the minimum legal P-trap I installed. It's an exterior wall and I did not want to compromise any (solid, old-growth oak) studs. I've had no issues so far. 5) Dryer ventilation: This was a puzzle and a major hurdle to minimizing my clearance behind the dryer. I could only ventilate through the exterior wall on the right of these images. I was able to fit a 90 degree Magvent and 90 degree elbow to get low enough to then run a slim vent to a 4in rigid vent out to the outside. The Magvent is also so I can remove the W/D if I ever need to in the future. Exhaust airflow has been great. 6) Electrical: This is the one thing I'm an actual pro at! And if you aren't... well I don't recommend doing this yourself. My area requires all wiring to run through conduit, so everything is hard piped. You could show a pro this post if you want them to achieve these results. Under cabinet lighting is 12V LED powered by an LED driver. The push-button switches are from House of Antique Hardware. 7) Drywall: I hate doing drywall. I tarped off the opening to the room before sanding but so much dust still got everywhere. 8) Framing and cabinetry: I framed a false wall to create a 9in space between the cabinets and the back wall to bring them flush with the washer/dryer. You can see in the pictures how I was able to use three off the shelf cabinets and build around them. I included a small access door behind the shelving on the left to access the rear of the washer/dryer if needed. I painted the cabinets using a critter sprayer which worked great. I coated everything with a sanding sealer, then Sherwin Williams gallery series paint, then polycrylic. This is the tutorial I followed for the cabinet painting and I'm very pleased with the results! Our budget for this project was $5000 including the washer/dryer and about a month to finish. It ended up taking 5 months to get to the finished product, but we had the washer/dryer up and running after the first two. I had to take a few breaks during the process and could really only devote the weekends to it. We definitely went over budget, but not by too much. I'll use most of the tools I had to purchase again since I've already got some more rooms lined up to work on! submitted by /u/MadDrewOB to r/DIY [link] [comments]

I dont want my younger brother and his wife living with us if they have a baby. AITAH?
I (27F) and my husband (28M) recently bought our first home and are trying to start a family. (I have also lost a pregnancy about 5 months ago). My youngest brother "BB" (23M) and his wife "A" (23F) have come across hard times. They have asked if they could rent our basement bedroom from us once their lease is up while they get on their feet. This would mean sharing common living areas and kitchen. I am okay with that. However, my other brother "OB" (25m) and his girlfriend have recently announced they are expecting. This has somehow put "BB" and his wife in a "race" to have the next baby. ( I.E. Before me and my husband) "BB" and "A" continue to bring up the fact that they are trying to have a child at EVERY dinner or family gathering since OB's announcement. I am incredibly frustrated with them as they are asking for a cheap place to stay because they have no money but also trying to bring a child into this world unprepared. I have expressed my opposition to them having a child before they have their financial situation in a better place and have also told them, if they get pregnant, I do not want them living in my house. At Easter dinner I told "A" again, ( after she brought it up) that they are making a bad decision and that I wasn't going to financially support them in my home if she got pregnant. This made her cry. Now my family is telling me I have no business telling them how to live their lives and I should shut up and support them or get out of their lives. I also am having big feelings because I want the baby in my home to be my own. AITA for this? Im i horrible for feeling this way? What should I do? Edit: I see some confusion in the comments. I dont care who has a baby first. Im excited for my brother who is expecting. Im am however, not okay with Baby Brother using my home, that I bought for me to have babies in, to have their baby in. If they can't afford their own housing, They cannot afford a child. Also, my parents are in separate states from us and are not in financial positions to help. And my family says ive always been a "bossy bitch" I guess that may be true. But I said what I said and thats what I said. Update 4-23 : There is LOTS to unpack. I sat and spoke with my husband today. He told me that after I went outside at sunday dinner to get away from them, that he and "A" had talked. He told her that I was having a hard time deciding if I wanted them in our house. Im not sure what else was said as I wasnt there. Apparently this meant we were "bullying them" and thats why BB came outside to tell me to apologize to A and the argument started on sunday that ended up involving the whole gaggle of goons. My husband also expressed the problems we've had with them disrespecting our tools and home when they come over to "hang out" (they built and painted some dressers for their apartment in my garage and made a HUGE mess. Paint all over. Our tools left outside in the yard. The paint sprayer was ruined because they put it in the fridge instead of cleaning it???? Some yard tools they played with while I was trimming trees and roses were still in the bushes out back.) (I usually communicate to my brother through text because they work night shifts. So my husband and I wrote this up and I sent it to BB. ) I love you both dearly. Ive spoken to my friend ( You on REDDIT! ) and she helped me understand that I was not approaching the situation the way thought I was. I know its not my business when you have kids or what your finances are or if its a good idea or not. Its ONLY my business if you stay at our house or not. I am your SISTER not your mother. I respect y’all’s decision to have a baby as it’s your choice. However, considering the circumstances , I don’t feel that’s a wise choice to let you move in anymore. Our agreement was for you and (A) to live here until you could get on your feet, but with the discussion of you actively trying to bring a child into the world it would be best to find housing for yourselves so you have the room if you’re to be expecting at anytime in the future. It wouldn’t be fair to any of us to be crowded in MY home with both families actively trying for a child. (Husband) and I want to grow our own family. We need our own space and are concerned that if you have a child, you will never be able to afford your own place. I am also concerned that you cant control (Demon dog.) She has been aggressive towards (my small dog) and stresses (my big dog) out. This is THEIR home. (My dogs) are my priority. We cannot and will not sacrifice our family's future to support you. I’m sorry I cant help you this way. I know (my husband) had mentioned to you my apprehension on you moving in. Im sorry it took the argument on sunday to help me come to a decision. I dont want any feelings of resentment. I will continue to help you find a cheaper car and will be a supportive big sister and help you however else i can As of this update I have not heard back. Ill update again when I have news. Small Update evening of 4-23 : My dad called me ! ( I think BB called him but I couldn't confirm) Apparently he didnt have the full story. He didnt know My brother had asked to live in my home. He agrees they should not be living with me. But he held his ground on saying what they do with their life is not my business. And I agree. Still no response from BB or A. UPDATE KINDA?? 4-25. BB called me today. We gave them some furniture when they moved into their apartment about 10 months ago. He asked if we wanted it back or if he could sell it. I told him it was his to do with as he wished. I asked if he wanted to talk about the text. As BB was answering, I heard A in the background go "nuh-uh" and cut BB off from talking and said "maybe later". Then I said okay love you and he said love you and hung up. Almost immediately after that call my dad called again. He asked me if BB had spoken to me at all, I told him about the odd way A cut him off from actually talking to me. My Dad said "It's totally up to them to fix their own shit and frankly she's way too easily offended and its her own problem." He also apologized for getting so upset on sunday, he is sick of their baby drama too. I am okay with where this has come to. I appreciate all of your advice and the comments! I was really starting to feel like the "Bitch sister " that I get called alot. I see now that I wasn't handling things in a way that made sense to my family. And they thought I was "meddling" in my brother's life without having the whole story. My husband says I'm a kind person but not "gentle" and thats why I rub people the wrong way. I will continue to "protect our peace" as you have advised! If anything changes, You'll be the first to know! Xoxo, The bossy bitch sister 😘 Update March 2026. Its been about a year and I thought I'd add an update. Baby brother and wife did NOT move in with us, they got an apartment in another town about 30 minutes away and are still trying for a baby. We were no contact for a few months but have since started to talk and visit eachother again. My other brother's baby is about 6 months old and is doing well, they moved out of state for his work. As for Me and my husband, we are doing well. We took a break from all family "duties" (I.E. hosting and "managing")and have been focused on renovating and maintaining our home . Unfortunately our roof was damaged in a storm and was replaced and then our water main blew only a few weeks later, but we have since repaired that. What can you expect from a historical home 🤷🏽♀️. We planted a tree in honor of our lost baby and are still praying and trying for a rainbow baby. I want to thank all of you who commented and offered advice, it really helped me see how I was being treated like the family manager instead of the older sister. I have set boundaries with my family and expressed my disappointment and hurt about how they treated my husband and Me. Hopefully things will continue to improve. Paint sprayer worth it?
Hi yall, I just purchased my first house and am looking to give every room a fresh coat of paint. I have been painting with a roller since I was a teenager (just family projects, nothing professional). But I am considering buying a sprayer in the $300 price range to help me do my new home. Especially since I plan on installing a fence and spraying it with stain. Also might paint the vinyl siding on the outside of my little ranch at some point... but anyway, I guess my question is, is the sprayer worth it? I never used one before and I see in youtube videos it takes like 5 minutes to paint a room. But then I saw some people say you still have to roll over it after, is that true? Also taping the entire room with plastic seems like a bit of a head ache. The house is about 1000sq foot. Should I just stick it out with rollers and paint brushes? Or go for the sprayer?? Are Airless Paint Sprayers Worth It for a Large DIY Renovation?
We're in the middle of a full house renovation, including repainting almost everything (5 bedrooms, 5-6 other rooms like hallways, bathrooms, and toilets, plus fences). The house is completely empty. While hiring someone for such a large project is an option, I enjoy DIY and might tackle a few rooms myself. I recently came across airless paint sprayers and am wondering if they’re worth considering for a project of this scale. Would they speed up the work significantly? Also, are airless sprayers beginner-friendly (or easy to get the hang of), and can they deliver a better finish compared to rollers or traditional sprayers? Finally, can airless sprayers be used to repaint house render in addition to interior walls? submitted by /u/Framatti to r/DIYUK [link] [comments]

Just bought an electric paint sprayer - what type of paint do I put in it?
Wanting to paint wooden plantation shutters inside my home (they are already primed). Need something resistant to the sun and moisture. Semi gloss preferred. Recommendations appreciated! Do you just pour normal canned paint from the hardware store in these things? submitted by /u/RevolutionaryKoala51 to r/paint [link] [comments]

Are paint sprayers any good?
And if they are can anyone recommend one? We’ve got a lot of walls to paint, it looks like of those would make short work of it. Would need it for kitchen paint if that makes any difference. submitted by /u/CaveJohnson82 to r/DIYUK [link] [comments]

Coworker nicked the paint sprayer hose. His finger is full of paint. There is a chance he could lose it
