Transforming an old kitchen is definitely a slow process, but we're getting there! So far, we've painted the cabinets, spray-painted the island, and sealed everything with polycrylic. Adding a small center island, new hinges, knobs, handles, and some peel-and-stick tiles is already making a massive difference. Hi guys! My husband and I recently sold our house in California and relocated to Hessen Germany. We are settling in well, but our only guest bathroom has been bothering me! We are in a rental until we build in a couple years, and I wanted to elevate the space in a way that could be reversed when we move out. This meant leaning into the pink, and no perminent adhesives. Some peel and stick tile, a mauve accented cabinet, wood look panels, gold borders, new faucet and stopper, light up mirror, marble light fixture, and a toilet seat later, and I think I have something special. I’m very happy with it. It’s not perfect, but I think it works well with the pink, and makes it look intentional and sophisticated! I’m no longer embarrassed to have guests use the bathroom. Wanted to share my little pink kitchen now that I'm happy with all the little details! 3rd and 4th pictures are what the kitchen originally looked like, and the last few pictures are just some closeups. I tried to do as much as could by myself! The painting/tiling/murals/etc, I did myself with advice from the lovely workers at my local hardware store, YouTube videos, and Reddit posts. The only things that a professional did were installing the wallpaper in the niche above the fridge, and replacing the appliances/sink/countertops. (Side note: I had wallpapered the niche myself with a cheap peel-and-stick when I first moved in. Took 4 hours, I somehow got cut, and it looked like shit. Vowed to never wallpaper it myself again lol.) As for the decor, many things in my kitchen are finds over the last few years from thrift stores and antique markets (even some of the cookbooks)! Everything else is from a big box store, or lovely artists that I follow on Instagram/Etsy! We have polished concrete on our entire first floor and I just don’t love it. The goal eventually is to do hardwood floors (but $$$, so not happening anytime soon). I’m assuming we wouldn’t do hardwoods in the half bath (right? Water damage?). What could we do in the meantime? Has anyone painted polished concrete? Does it stay? Would it look good? What about the peel and stick tiles I’m seeing? Do we go ahead and tile this half bath and wait on the hardwoods? A main concern in the transition between the half bath and the hallway. We just recently moved into a new apartement (rented) and it has piss-yellow tiles in the kitchen and both bathrooms. For the bathrooms I am thinking about paint and some vinyl flooring. (Our landlord is fine with that) I have been looking at some solutions for the kitchen backsplash though. Since the kitchen has already been installed in front of the tiles, painting them is not an option. I would have to remove the kitchen so that we can paint all of the tiles. I have been seeing peel and stick tiles everywhere and the price seems very good for a short-term usage period. The budget is very low, the less, the better. Has anyone had any experiences with these type of tiles? How durable are they, are the seams very obvious? Thanks in advance! EDIT: It's mostly about walltiles in the kitchen as a backsplash. We bought our first house last fall and I am slowly realizing the previous owner was that DIY guy from YouTube who thinks he is a master contractor. At first it looked cute and "updated". Now every week I find one more cursed project. Light switches that do nothing or turn off half the basement. A bathroom fan that vents straight into the attic so now the insulation smells weird. All the curtain rods are installed with tiny drywall screws so they rip out if you look at them wrong. In the kitchen he put peel and stick backsplash right over cracked tile so it flexes when you press it. I pulled one outlet to change the cover and found three different types of wire just twisted together and taped. No wire nuts at all. I feel like I need to call an electrician and just say "assume everything is wrong". Has anyone else bought a house that was basically held together by vibes and caulk. We just pulled up some really old sticky tiles and the vinyl floor underneath had a layer of adhesive that we spent days trying to get up. What finally worked was baking soda! We barely had to scrape. Just let it sit for a while, then use a 5 in 1 tool/scraper and scrape it off. We were amazed! Note: in photo 2, that was the only consumer image I could find of those tiles in a kitchen with white cabinetry and white quartz countertop like I have, but I think I would take the tiles all the way to the bottom of the upper cabinets, to fill the space. I think I might be leaning toward 1, even though 2 is beautiful, bc I am more used to seeing the “offset tile” pattern of 1, vs parallel lines of tiles in 2 (hopefully that makes sense). We are doing a tiny kitchen remodel and looking for something easy for the wall behind counter. In total the area is 90” long (sink in middle) and upper cabinets hung on either side of sink the typical 18” above the counter. The window will be hung a bit lower than the cabinets. Or maybe go with a water resistant wallpaper? So I got on the peel and stick tile trend and saw multiple people using a method that required shower curtain barrier under the peel and stick, taped down by painters tape. Specific to renter friendly. Big mistake. I got premium shower curtains spent over $100 alone on good quality curtains. Best most expensive brand painters tape. Problem: the curtains are absolutely impossible to lay flat due to the folds of the curtains. I spent 6 hours alone taping, stretching, loosening and revising the smaller pieces of curtain. I laid them flad for 24 hours. I tried applying heat gun to rid of the folds. Nothing. Not only that but the tape suggested as "renter friendly" , painters tape... Does not at all stick to the floor or hold these things down. It peels right back up, leaving the only option left as duck tape ... But again this is NOT RENTER FRIENDLY if I'm now duck taping cheap old vinyl to sit under a peel and stick tile. That will be a pain to get of after sitting a year, if possible. I applied a couple peel and stick on the wrinkly shower curtain and it snaps, slides and lifts. Since the shower curtain method is not working I thought of simply applying to the direct vinyl. This is doable but the directions on my brand of peel and stick say to use latex primer directly on the floor. So I did all the research I could, not much available on this topic but it seems as if latex primer is difficult to get off, the methods used to get it off damage the floor so again in my opinion not RENTER FRIENDLY. Throwing this out there Incase anyone falls into the same trap I did .. best to just buy a new sheet of vinyl. It's cheaper, less hassle and the peel and stick isn't renter friendly anyway. We used a popular brand of peel and stick tiles. It cost about $400 CAD to do, and took probably 5 hours total. Nothing in our kitchen is level, so it was really tough, and we were really picky about getting as close to perfect as possible. It also didn’t help that the tiles would rip up the paint immediately, so there was no repositioning a tile once it was down (unlike how it was advertised). Likely due to poor painting of the kitchen I think. We will see in a few years how “rental friendly” these tiles actually are when it’s time to pull them off. I have my doubts. First of all, I rent. I do plan on living here for awhile but you never know! This is my current backsplash in my kitchen and I hate it. I think it’s very busy and dated. I like a cleaner more boho aesthetic and have been wanting to try covering this up with a peel and stick. I’ve heard bad things about them peeling off paint when removed, but would they damage real tile like this? I heard some hacks of covering the area in painters tape or contact paper before putting the tile over it and thought that might work? Also heard of applying it to foam board/cardboard and command hooking it to the wall instead. Would that work here? I definitely don’t want to damage the tile already there but really want a change.
