Genuinely, how do some of you all even have time with the amount of exercises?
I can't be the only one questioning this on this sub (or other subs). I see constantly many people talking about hitting the gym 4-6x a week (lifting HEAVY), doing 10-15k walks everyday, stretching everyday, doing Pilates or Yoga classes on top of that a few times a week, while getting at least 8h of sleep, etc. All at the same time. How the hell do you all even have time, unless you're jobless? I can't even find time to walk to my job to get those steps in. If I did all of that together, I wouldn't even have time for other work projects or hobbies. How do you lot find the time? Do you have a gym in your home? I need to understand, I'm genuinely impressed. Unless you're waking up at 3 or 4AM, then I can't get on board with that. And no, I'm not getting a dog, lol. But still, I'm impressed. EDIT: So what I'm gathering is: be rich, WFH, or be unemployed (😭). I need my business degree as soon as hell! submitted by /u/Wise_Parmaria to r/PetiteFitness [link] [comments]

my boss made me verify that I’m really exercising (New Update)
my boss made me verify that I’m really exercising Originally posted to Ask A Manager Thanks to u/Lynavi for finding the new update TRIGGER WARNING: Body shaming, Hostile workplace Original Post June 23, 2025 My office has an exercise leave program that allows us to stack our two 15-minute breaks to leave early, arrive late, or use the time midday for exercise. This benefit may be used three times per week, and may be combined with our flexible schedule and lunch break to allow for longer midday exercise periods. We complete an annual form, signed by the employee, our boss, and our one-person HR department. I am a woman on the larger end of the mid-sized range who works out five days a week at barre/Pilates classes, two to three times a week using exercise leave (generally by leaving half an hour early). As of this morning, our executive director (my manager’s boss) states I have to provide verification of every single class I attend from now on and from the past four months. According to his email, he doubts I’ve “used the program appropriately as there is no improvement in your appearance.” Neither my boss nor HR were included in the email, which I have forwarded to my personal email address. He gave me until close of business Friday to submit evidence. This is the first time I’ve been asked to verify my attendance at my exercise classes. My relationship with my manager is characterized by a high level of mutual trust. I have been here four years and have had no performance issues, including attendance problems, in that time; I have four years of excellent annual and quarterly reviews to back this up. When we all completed our exercise program forms at our recent all staff meeting, our boss even noted that she’s never had to ask for verification. Thankfully, I have my studio membership receipt and the studio manager was kind enough to run a software report of my electronic sign-ins for the past six months. Though I can verify I have not misused the program, I am disturbed by his email and wonder what advice you have for addressing the fact that his request is based on my size and appearance, and not my work performance. Update Dec 1, 2025 (over 5 momths later) I appreciated the validation offered by you and your readers, and apologize I couldn’t be available when it was posted for replies. The executive director’s deadline for my “proof” was just a couple days after I reached out to you, so I had to take action before you had a chance to publish your reply. I thought about replying to the email from my executive director with the verification documents and including my manager and HR. Because of the specter of sexual harassment (nothing easily actionable, but I think we all know it was there) I instead rang a local employment attorney and visited him for a consultation the next day. He advised forwarding the email to my manager and HR without the executive director included, and provided language quite similar to that you suggested, with the addition of asking if management of the exercise program has shifted to the executive director. He also advised to ask for responses via email. I did as he suggested. My manager was upset and HR surprised. They came to my office together and assured me management had not shifted to him, that basing the request on my appearance was inappropriate, and that it would not happen again. I sent an email recap to them, and they replied confirming that is how they recalled the meeting. That was the end of it, until last month. At our fall all-staff quarterly meeting, the director announced he made the decision to terminate the exercise program with immediate effect. As you ended your reply to my initial letter: he is an ass. NEW UPDATE Update 2 Apr 2, 2026 (4 months after 1st update) A happy update. Today we had our spring quarterly all-staff meeting, where HR announced the return of the flex-time exercise program. Two changes were made to the program: Structure around verification requests, include who may request verification and why. (Only your direct manager may initiate the request, which must be routed through human resources.) A “exercise program log” is now the only document that we must produce for a verification request. This is a spreadsheet provided by HR that we can complete electronically or by hand, and simply includes the date and a brief description of the activity. Our executive director remains, but his one-year contract is up early this summer. Last year, I found it notable the management board’s renewed his contract for one year when the standard for his position (the only contract position in the organization) is two years. He spoke at length today about how important family is, so we are all hopeful he will opt to “spend more time with his family” instead of pushing for another contract renewal. Have you used a Pilates board? Is it actually effective?
I’ve been seeing those portable Fitness/Pilates boards all over TikTok and I’m curious if anyone here has actually used one. There’s no gym in my area, so I’m trying to find something I can do at home. I really want to get a flatter stomach and improve my core. Is the Pilates board actually effective for that? Or would you recommend a better alternative for home workouts submitted by /u/nikkisals to r/beginnerfitness [link] [comments]

PSA - Think Carefully Before Partnering With Reformly PilatesBoard
PSA - Think Carefully Before Partnering With Reformly P-ilates Board . https://reformly.com/ I normally don’t post about disputes publicly, but I feel obligated to share this experience so other creators can make informed decisions. In October 2025, Reformly reached out to me directly and proposed a 40% revenue share partnership using my personal discount code. I was told I had flexibility in my posting schedule and that all sales through my code would be compensated. On November 23, 2025, I posted a YouTube video promoting their product. It generated immediate sales, and I was paid once in early December. The video continued generating revenue after that. As of February 2026, my dashboard reflects $10,289.29 USD in unpaid commission tied directly to my code. When I followed up, Reformly informed me that payouts were subject to a “two posts per week” requirement — a condition that was never discussed with me, never negotiated, and not enforced when I was paid previously. I have posted three total pieces of content (YouTube, TikTok, Instagram). In January 2026, they also downloaded and reuploaded my YouTube video to their own platform without my permission. This was later described as “embedding,” but it was not an embed — it was a reupload. They mentioned paying in installments and “figuring something out,” and then communication stopped. I am now pursuing formal resolution. If you are considering working with Reformly, I strongly encourage you to: Get all payout conditions in writing Clarify whether commissions can “expire” Monitor how your content is used Make your own decision — but go in with full awareness. Happy to answer questions via PM. Seriously so many brands try to rip off from pilates teachers who have good heart to teach. Crazy! submitted by /u/MagazineEarly3304 to r/pilates [link] [comments]

Hi all, I was gifted this from buy nothing group. I was super excited to use it and then I realized I have no idea how. Can anyone recommend any YouTube channels that teach how to use this please? I’m a beginner in Pilates in general and only workout twice a week. I know it’s not an actual reformer, but I have it and can’t afford actual classes for now, so I wanna give this a use. Thanks all! submitted by /u/Chance_Willow_3168 to r/pilates [link] [comments]

No, that board has nothing to do with Pilates and is not a reformer. No, that reformer with a keysmash name on Amazon is not a reputable brand. No, Wall Pilates is not a thing.
ETA: Thank you for your upvotes, but I made this mostly to have a URL to redirect people to when they get an automatic block on posting something about these things. This is a post made specifically to redirect all posters requesting information about the "Pilates board," which is not a reformer and not an invention of Joseph Pilates and not a piece of equipment used by reputable, certified Pilates instructors and studios. No, we don't suggest you buy it. No, we don't have suggestions for streamers with workouts who use it. Yes, we are aware that it is dropshipped and renamed by hundreds of cheap companies, and yes, many of them have taken people's money without ever delivering the piece of plastic. We are not customer service or the Better Business Bureau and cannot help you. No, your post about that board (whether lhanelfit, Flo Pilates, Marcy, Ultimate, 28, or anything else--it's all the same piece of plastic) is not going to be approved. Buy at your own risk--or better yet, don't buy it. You may also wish to view previous discussions on these boards here, here, here, or here (or, as we say in many post rejections, use the search function). If it looks like this, it's not a reformer, it's not a recommended purchase, and it's not going to be an approved post. This post is also made specifically to redirect all posters requesting information about cheap (under $500) Pilates reformers on Amazon with brand names that look like a keysmash (you know, when you just smash a lot of keys on your keyboard and end up with something like this--waeiotha;jkwefn;jkads). You can learn more about these keysmash brands here (gift link): https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/11/style/amazon-trademark-copyright.html?unlocked_article_code=1.lE8.g7EO.bQm4I4ZT1AhM&smid=url-share No, nobody here who knows anything about Pilates recommends or endorses any of those brands when they appear and disappear all the time and are all selling one or two of the same products from the same anonymous factory overseas and just drop shipping them. Buy at your own risk--or better yet, don't buy it. When it breaks, you will be hard-pressed to find spare parts that fit, and when you get hurt on it, you'll be hard-pressed to find anyone to hold responsible for your injury and your medical bills. You were provided an entire !wiki when you joined this sub, and it has an extensive guide to reputable Pilates equipment brands and Pilates teaching schools. No, your post about that cheap Amazon reformer by a brand nobody has heard of will not be approved. How can you tell if that keysmash brand is not a legitimate Pilates retailer? Well, if they're also selling cat food, fluffy slippers, and screwdrivers, they probably aren't about Pilates, they're just about selling products. You may also wish to view previous discussions on the subject here, here, or here (or, as we point out in many post rejections, use the search function). This post is also made specifically to redirect all posters complaining about Wall Pilates dot com or asking about the legitimacy of Wall Pilates. Joseph Pilates never called anything "wall Pilates." At best, the concept of Wall Pilates is simply mat Pilates using a wall as a sort of prop. There may be some useful modifications there, but it is certainly not a discipline or a thing that any credentialed teachers learn as a Pilates style. No, we are not the customer service department and can't help you get your money back. No, we don't recommend you pay money for an app for this made up Pilates style when, again, you were provided an ENTIRE wiki with recommendations for reputable streaming Pilates workouts, recognized schools for teachers, and more. You may also wish to view previous discussions on the subject here, here, or here (or, as we point out in many post rejections, use the search function). submitted by /u/mixedgirlblues to r/pilates [link] [comments]

Gov. Kelly restricts free speech areas for Satanist in Kansas.
OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: The board of our organization has discussed many options today regarding Governor Laura Kelly restricting our freedom of speech. We will not be swept aside to protect your career madam. We will not acquiesce the same rights you have afforded to other religious organizations. You do not get to decide what is appropriate for us. Your only job is to protect your constituents constitutional rights. You have failed in this in the most cowardly way, like Pontius Pilate washing his hands. WE DEFY YOU MADAM GOVERNOR. The Satanic Grotto lead by its President Michael Stewart will enter the state capitol building and perform our ritual on March 28. You will have to have us arrested to stop us from practicing our free speech and religious rights. Shame on you, Gov. Kelly. Hail Satan 🌻 🤘 submitted by /u/xsimon666x to r/kansas [link] [comments]

She (30F) fucked up my (27M) life, just like she said she wouldn't.
TLDR: Dated somebody for 5 years. She split after getting a new job in a different city. Took all the pets after going to a pet medium. Started seeing a person that was a "don't need to worry about him" guy during the relationship. I'm still sad and processing. Edit: Am adding a comment up here to just show appreciation to everybody who has commented or messaged me about this. Truly, I had just written this because I needed to vent. I've been overwhelmed by the amount of people who have given their support and wisdom. Even the tough love comments about some of the obvious shit I missed are appreciated because they help me see just how naive I was for so long. After a lot of long talks with people, just wanted to say this has helped a ton. I'm still hurting, but I'm processing, and things will be okay. Also apologies that this post was so long. And no, it wasn't written by AI. ______________________________________________ When I was 22, I met this 25 year old girl at a party. We hit it off, and started getting closer and more familiar with each other. Soon after we started dating, she started telling me about trauma she had with her ex. The trust issues, the self-esteem issues, and the hurt that she had gone through because of his lying, cheating, and abuse. Throughout all of it, I listened, supported, and was patient as she navigated through her own journey of healing. In that time, she told me that I was crucial to her finding a way to love again, and to feel whole again. When things between us started to get serious, she told me her biggest fear was that she would hurt me in the same way the he hurt her, and be the reason that I end up with trauma and the issues that come with. She told me about the little voice in her head that picked up on all his red flags, but that she had ignored that voice for years. It's only been recently that I realized the same thing - there has been this quiet voice inside me all along raising alarm bells, but I hushed it out of naivety. We spent 5 years together. I became a co-parent to two cats and one dog, and loved them as if I had known them my whole life. Our relationships started by building a bubble of our own little world to live in, and no matter where we went, that bubble stayed in tact and was reprieve from everything else in the world. Our little family was the safest place on Earth - everywhere we went, we turned any four walls into a home for ourselves. Being so young, life was not stable, and we were not rich. She had gone through 3 jobs in 4 years, had medical treatments, invested a lot into making. I kept a stable, high-paying job, but couldn't afford much after student loans, hospital bills, and food came into the picture. With so much debt, we were forced to stay fairly stagnant for years. The excitement and passion we had at the beginning started to fade, and she grew tired of the day-to-day routines that we had fallen into. I recognized the stagnation, but embraced the fact that even though our romance was not the high octane version it once was, our loved showed up in those mundane activities, like taking care of the pets together, by going through life's hard times together, and having somebody unconditionally next to you through it all. In the stubborn routine of things, she had tried new hobbies to get into: candle-making, Pilates, binge-watching shows, reading, but the one that stuck was boxing. She had always struggled to stick with a specific workout regimen, but as soon as she started boxing, she loved it and the people that were in her classes. One guy in particular, who was in his early 20s, really hit it off with her, and soon she started telling me they were spending time together outside of class. She had gone over to his house late at night to try braiding his hair, they had gone paddle-boarding together, and had plans to spend more time together 1 on 1. I warned her that it might not be good because proximity like that breeds feelings, and it's very common for the guys she hangs out with to eventually start to get feelings for her. So, to no surprise, she came home one day devastated because he had actually told her they couldn't be friends, because he developing feelings for her. Throughout our whole relationship, I thought she was crazy about me, and she had always talked about men with such disdain. I was arrogant in the fact that I had nothing but trust with her. She had confided in me about issues related to having friends. She worked from home, and often would get depressed due to the isolation and lack of companionship outside of our relationship. I had only ever wanted her to be happy, so I saw this new companion as nothing but a new friend who made her happy. Ironically, when she started boxing, she had told me she was entering her "single girl era," where she would focus on her self-growth and journey as if she was newly single, but not actually be single. This was said in jest at the time, and I understood what she meant, but in looking back, that little voice warned me about all that was happening - but I just ignored it. A few months after she started this boxing class, her remote job had made an announcement that all remote employees were being forced to return to the office. As a couple struggling financially, moving to a HCOL area was scary. The town we were in was small, safe, had people we knew and trusted, and we could get by month to month. I had started getting really close with a group of guys in town, and said I was sad to leave them, but that my number one priority in life was her and the pets. So although I wasn't enthused about moving, I was willing to go with her so that we could keep our little world together once more. Not long after, she decided she didn't want that. She wanted to call it quits, and leave me in the small town so she could go to the city and be alone. I wasn't angry, because I understood the value of being alone and how people are able to learn and grow differently compared to when they're in a relationship living with someone. However, after making my case why we should stay together, and what the alternatives might be, she changed her tune, and said that the breakup was because of my inability to take action and make things exciting again. She expressed a few times that she had wanted to go back to that initial spark and excitement from the beginning of our relationship, but over time I had not taken any action, and that I had boxed her in and put pressure on her to be somebody she wasn't. Truthfully, I'm really not sure what she meant by me applying pressure to her. I agreed that we had become stale, but what couple doesn't get a little less exciting after so long together? Throughout all of the changes she wanted, I had always offered her space and/or support to make that happen. Only a week after the breakup, I had flown out of town to go to doctor's appointments for my dad, who was being seen for his dementia. We were still living together at the time, but this was the first instance where I wasn't around. We had only been broken up a week, but I saw that she had already deleted all pictures of me off her social media. Even for trips that we went on together, that I paid for, she only kept the pictures of her. While I was out of town, she had messaged people in my friend group and asked them out to drinks. I found out through mutual friends, and confronted her about it, saying that it hurt my feelings and was wrong to do. She downplayed it, saying that she thought it would be funny and it was only drinks, so it wasn't a big deal. She apologized for the optics of it. She also said that immediately after the breakup, her self-esteem issues and insecurities had all disappeared and she felt incredible about herself. She wasn't sure why, but for some reason once I wasn't in the picture, all her internal dilemmas have been resolved. After that confrontation, I moved out the same night, finding the only apartment I could on such short notice. The next day I moved out, and took 3 hours to get my entire livelihood out of our apartment. In the chaos of moving so quickly, there was a little bit of a mess. She yelled at me for leaving such a mess, because she assumed I was going to force her to clean it up. I apologized, cleaned everything, thanked her for the time we had, and left. We had one open item left for discussion, and that was the pets. She resolved that open item by telling me she talked to an online pet medium, and the pets had all communicated that they wanted to stay with her. In the few months since the breakup, I've seen through various means that she has completely gone for the superficial journey. She has been posting on social media significantly more; has gotten lip filler and other self-enhancements. I've been told that she has been going out a lot, and spent considerable time with the guy from boxing who I was told "not to worry about." In a far off reality, I think this break-up could have been amicable. I would never be upset at someone for pursuing a shot at incredible self-growth; however, instead of it being a peaceful separation, she burnt everything we had built, and showed zero empathy for somebody who used to be her life partner. That's how we got to where we are today. A few months ago I was ready to make a giant leap of faith with this woman, and now I'm completely alone for the first time in years. I think back to what she said about being afraid to leave me with trauma. From the start, this breakup has been especially brutal on my psyche, and ever since, it's only gotten worse. Through finding out that she was reaching to my friends on Instagram to get with them, to finding out that right after the breakup she spent significant time with the person who got feelings for her while we were dating. My family has since told me that they were worried about me for a while; that when her and I were together, they noticed patterns of her controlling me, for being angry with me over small ordeals, to actively rooting against me during friendly competitions like playing board games. They said they had been wanting to talk to me about her for a while, because of the way she treated me when we were together. She took the pets without a second guess as to what was best for them. She turned the breakup from one of self-growth, to a finger pointing exercise in all the ways I failed as a partner. I've talked to a few people since, and recognize the role that I'm in currently is the same as the one she was in when we met. I'm just here, talking about all the ways my ex has fucked me up, and apologizing to the other person for having to deal with it. I can't trust. I can't exude any confidence. All I feel is the emptiness of the last 5 years of my life being wasted on somebody who cared about me once, but stopped caring about me long ago. I wanted to write this because all the therapists I've reached out to have me on a waiting list. I feel so incredibly alone. Today I had a panic attack in the corner of Trader Joe's because I'm both so angry and so hurt. I can't sleep because my dreams are all filled with her and the guys she's been with so quickly after the relationship ended. I'm scared to go out into town because I'll run into one of my old "friends" that she went on a date with. She never technically cheated on me, but knowing that all of this has happened so quickly after the breakup makes me feel like she emotionally cheated on me months ago. I'm embarrassed that I spent so much time with somebody who offered nothing to the relationship, and was so mean to me for so long. I feel betrayed for both the fact that I trusted her unconditionally, but should have been more vocal about those huge red flags she presented. I hate that she took 1/5th of my life just to leave me with nothing but an empty bank account and months and months of issues that I will now have to work through. I hate the fact that she has walked out of this unscathed, and completely unbothered by the breakup. From what I have seen and have been told, she has been nothing but happy and outgoing since the split, which is even more bothersome because all I ever tried to do was offer the freedom and support to make her happy when we were together. I'm not sure what I did wrong; I'm not sure what I did that was so incredibly deceitful that she decided to cause so much pain to me personally. She could have ended the relationship and walked away without causing any additional drama, but she didn't. She immediately pursued other guys, which has only twisted the knife that was already painful enough. I hate being on a sad soapbox like this; I hate being the sad person people see when I tell them the things going on in my life. I miss having animals to love and to hold when things get rough. I don't like telling my sob story, but I just needed an outlet to say that I'm not doing okay. At all. I'm incredibly angry, and sad. I've cut every single tie with her in hopes of a clean break, but there are all these small cracks where I hear some whisper about her and it only hurts more and makes me restart the healing process from square one. I hate her, truly, and will never forgive her for taking away the pets that meant the world to me, and for hurting me in ways she really didn't need to in order to close this chapter of ours. So yeah.. I'm just.. struggling. Really struggling. And feel so terribly alone. submitted by /u/Few_Chapter8166 to r/self [link] [comments]

The Absolute Beginner's Guide to the Gym
Hello all, First, this is not a post about exercise. This is a post about going to a gym! I notice that every once in a while someone asks a question about gyms: joining them, using them, etiquette, etc. I also noticed that there isn't much about using or accessing gyms in the wiki, so hopefully this gets added (or not, if it's not useful). If you're new to getting in shape and want to use a gym for that, I hope this will answer any questions you may have. This is based on my personal experience, and I'm sure many of you will have "but my gym doesn't do it this way" comments, so please feel free to comment and I'll adjust accordingly. Without further ado, let's talk about gyms! What and why A gym is a place that makes working out easier. It's usually a space dedicated to some form of physical activity that allows members to reach their fitness goals. Gyms vary quite drastically in what they offer, how they offer it, what they prioritize, etc. While you don't have to join a gym to get active or hit your fitness goals, it usually gives you access to equipment and resources you can't get otherwise (like weights, cardio equipment, pools, personal trainers, etc.). Unless you're hitting a specific exercise (running or swimming, for example), joining a gym is an easy way to get access to those resources. Different gyms will prioritize different aspects of fitness and well-being. Most large gyms are all-rounders: they try to cater to weightlifters, bodybuilders, yoga enthusiasts, swimmers, runners, etc. Some gyms are more specialized: for example, some may have weights only. Or some might be single function (and probably not be called a gym at all): wall-climbing, yoga studios, Pilates studios, etc. What you join should depend on your goals, and this guide will cover as much as possible to help you decide and navigate the gyms. What you would find at the gym The reception: almost without fail, there will be a desk at the front where someone will greet you and check that you're a member before letting you in. The people at the front desk are sometimes also trained as sales people, so they might try to sell you stuff, but once you're a member, they're there to help you out. Free weights: this will be one of the the most common items you'll find in gyms. The most basic weight option will probably be a rack of dumbbells, but you'll also see free weights, Olympic barbells, benches, racks, and all sorts of muscular individuals hauling these weights around. The variety and scale of equipment depends on the clientele, with some gyms having a much bigger area dedicated to weightlifting. Resistance machines: these vary greatly in variety and function. Most will have some sort of weight selection, and they will mostly focus on one muscle or muscle group in the workout. While not very popular in r/Fitness, they do serve a function and are sometimes necessary (for example, they're good for back exercises). Some of them will have cables, some will have complex levers, and almost all will have a small guide on how to adjust the machine, how to use it, and which muscles it targets. Cardio equipment: these are typically treadmills, elliptical machines, stationary bikes, rowing machines, and other devices that allow you to perform cardiovascular exercises without changing your location. They'll more often than not be seen in rows, usually opposite the windows or mirrors. As their name suggests, they help get your heart-rate up. They're probably the easiest to use, as you probably can run or cycle. Body-weight and suspension area: better equipped gyms might also have an area that seems somewhat emptier and allows for more freedom of movement, but might have a device like this suspension rack, and might have the big bouncy balls, or thick ropes attached to racks. These areas are designed for body-weight exercises, and will often attract personal trainers or even small group classes in "bootcamp" format. Studios: a studio is an area that is somewhat separated from the rest of the gym, usually by glass walls and doors, usually has mirrors on one side, and will sometimes have a stage. Studios are used for things like yoga classes, group exercise classes, etc. You might find yoga mats or exercise balls in there. Some are specialized: they might cycling studios or Pilates studios. Studios are usually open to members if there isn't an active class, and they're good for stretching or warming up/cooling down. Specialized equipment: some gyms have climbing walls, swimming pools, etc. It's worth asking about these if anything interests you. Group exercise classes: many gyms offer these classes (Les Mills, Spinning, yoga, Pilates, etc.). These are sometimes part of your membership, and are sometimes extra. You should check with your gym on if they have them and how you can sign up. Gender-specific areas: other than the obvious ones (showers and bathroom) some gyms might have female-only areas: could be a class, could be a studio, could be a certain time in the week. If you're female and would a "safer" environment, you can always ask about these Showers & sauna: most gyms will have lockers, changing rooms, showers, and some will have hair dryers, ironing boards, saunas, steam rooms, jacuzzis, etc. These are not important to everyone, but a shower might be worth confirming if you're planning on showering after a workout. Many gyms will also offer towels (a small one to carry around and a big one to dry yourself after showering). Personal trainers: as the name suggests, these individuals dedicate their time to just you in the gym! PT sessions are usually an hour to 90-minutes each, and are designed to help you focus and get better results. PTs are not for everyone. First, they're expensive. Second, they need you to agree on a predefined time and place to exercise. Third, you might not need them if you've been doing this for a while. However, they can be good if you're an absolute noob and prefer someone to handhold you for the first month or so. PT sessions are sold by the # of sessions, and can used over a specific period. Check with your gym on what options they may have. Chillout area: some of the nicer gyms will have a lounge area, with coffee, a juice bar, etc. available to the members. This isn't really related to exercise, but having an area like that makes a gym more appealing to some. Cool, sound like fun! Where do I start? First, find a convenient gym. I highly suggest a place that is either near work or near home; anything too far will lead to excuses for not going. You also need to make sure your gym has the equipment/timing/price that's good for you. Google is your friend (and I guess Yelp). Once you have one or two options, head down before the day you intend to start working out. Walk up to the reception and ask them for a tour of the facilities, and about their pricing options. I suggest you go the gym around the time you intend to work out, to see how busy it is. Don't forget to see the showers and lockers. Before signing up for a long-term contract, see if you can get a test run (some will give you a 3 day trial, some have one-month options). A one-month option helps you see if a gym is really for you (some people will always prefer to run/cycle/swim outdoors). If there are several gyms that are convenient location-wise, I suggest you see them all before signing any commitments. A small note: while in general gyms and gym-goers are welcoming, some gym environments could be toxic (judgmental, show-offy, superficial). Don't be discouraged! That's why I suggest trying a gym out for a month, to make sure the environment is positive and supportive. You need to find a place that you'll be happy going to. Second, once you've settled on the gym, get ready on the day you want to go. Wear some comfortable clothes and shoes, pack a change of clothes (if you need to change), a bottle of water, and head to the gym (I wouldn't initially worry about things like gloves or wraps; you won't need those for a while). At the reception, check in and ask for a towel (if the gym provides it), and ask for help for whatever you're trying to do: if it's weights, ask them for help with the weight area, cardio, ask for help with the machines, etc. The staff should be able to orient you and give you the basics of the gym. Ask about any special rules (use of chalk, grunting, music, etc., some have funny rules). At this point you should follow whatever program you've researched before. Remember, this is not a working out guide! Third: shower and change, and congrats! day one is done! Keep in mind that a gym is not the cleanest of environments, so make sure you also wash your bottle, etc. Gym etiquette The most important thing you need to keep in mind is that no one in the gym cares about what you look like, how much you weight, and what exercises you perform. Having said that, a gym is a common area, so it pays to be considerate. While exercising, observe the room. See how people wait for machines to be ready, how they behave, etc. Look for signs that talk about rules (for example, some gyms limit cardio machine usage ). If you're unsure about something, ask. Unless they're in the middle of their workout, most people are more than happy to help. The gym staff are there to help, so always feel free to ask them as well. Weights: if you're weightlifting, you're going to rest between sets. If the gym is busy, it is good form to share: other people can use the machines/devices/weights while you're resting between sets. Racks (squat, bench) get busy and sharing helps everyone move more quickly. Quick note: if you're sharing equipment/machines, and you're listening to music, male sure you take your headphones/earphones off so you can communicate. You need to hear your buddy. This is especially important if you're ever spotting someone. If you're using a bench or a seat, it's good form to place a towel where you might sweat on it, and wipe it down after you're done. Before grabbing weights from a machine/bar, check to see if someone is still using them (asking won't harm). Always return your weights to the weight rack. Don't be the disruptive asshole (grunting loudly, dropping weights). If you're unsure about something, or need help with an exercise, ask other people who are not actually working out. The big buff guys are probably the nicest as they usually remember what it was like being a beginner. Some seasoned lifters in here pointed out that dropping weights and grunting are part of the workout. That's very true, but doesn't mean you get to be an asshole about it. Is there rubber on the floor? Is there a deadlift area? Are you grunting in effort or to show off? Again, it's really about being considerate. Cardio: observe the time limit if there are people waiting, and wipe your sweat off when you're done. Studio use: return everything you use in there. Turn off the lights if necessary. Don't drop weights on the wooden floor. Body weight area: make sure there isn't a class or someone else using the equipment. If it's an individual, ask if sharing is ok. If it's a class, either join in/sign up, or wait for it to finish. Group classes: these usually need you sign up early, and your membership needs to include them. Always put your equipment away after the class is done, or wipe your sweat puddle. Think of people using the gym after you. submitted by /u/freckledass to r/Fitness [link] [comments]
