Confessions of a gym rat and die hard hot yoga junkie turned Pilates Princess 👑
An updated to my previous post… https://www.reddit.com/r/pilates/s/877UegKSxH A couple months ago, I came to this sub to get an opinion on hot yoga vs Pilates. I wanted to do a two month follow up as to maybe help someone with their decision. A little background, I’m a competitive gymnast turned rock/mountain climber turned gym rat. I’ve always been active and always been in the gym. But as I’ve crossed into my 30s, I’ve started to think more about longevity. Enter hot yoga. I had been doing 3 days in the gym (progressive overload, push/pull/legs split) along with 2 days a week at hot power vinyasa for about 2 years. I was getting kinda board and my joints were starting to ache with lifting heavy. My gym was offering a $100 a month deal with their new reformer Pilates studio so I decided to give it a go and give up my yoga membership. I also switched up my gym split and asked chat gpt to create me an arm and leg day focused on complementing my reformer workouts. In addition to 3 reformer classes a week, I added in 2 days of cardio. So 3 reformer classes, 2 strength days, and 2 cardio days a week. At first, the reformer was kinda weird. As someone who is pretty strong and limber already, I was kinda ???? At the first couple classes. I felt a pretty good core workout but I wasn’t sure if I was going to see a payoff. Now that I’m 25 classes and 2 months in, boy was I wrong! The reformer is a sneaky SOB. The Positives - WOW I didn’t realize how unevenly balanced I was??? I was unknowingly favoring one hip due to a lingering ankle injury and the reformer balanced me out. I notice I stand and walk more evenly now. - My core is SOLID. I did core in my workouts before, but not like this. The reformer made me a lot more conscious of engaging my core all day everyday. - My back feels super strong. I’m on my feet all day with my job and regularly feel my lower back ache due to a natural anterior pelvic tilt. Yoga helped out with this a bit in keeping me limber, but the reformer helped to correct the tilt quite a bit with more strength. Now I don’t get nearly as many lower back aches as I did prior. - Probably due to less weight on my joints from lifting, my joints don’t hurt nearly as bad. - The energy and brain clarity these classes give me is amazing! I would regularly come out of a hard hot yoga class or gym sesh and feel completely drained until I grabbed a snack. Like, a good workout was only good unless I was SWEATING and panting. I only burn about 200-250 calories a class but it’s enough to make me feel more mentally clear yet I still feel the burn when I’m doing the moves correctly. But trying to train my brain to think that I’m still getting a workout even tho I’m not out here sweating profusely and burning 500 calories has been a bit of a mental challenge. - I thought I was going to lose some of my bendiness in Pilates but honestly I haven’t? I think I’ve gotten more bendy? - I’m mad at myself for not taking before and after photos, but I do feel like I have leaned out as my pants are fitting better :) - I don’t feel like I’m stressing out my body!! Lots of heavy days in the gym and power classes can take it out of you. I feel like I’m really starting to listen to my body better. I’ve got less stress breakouts, body aches, and bloating. The Negatives - I miss the play and the sweat that hot yoga offered me. - I also miss the meditative aspect of hot yoga. I’ve had to be intentional about adding it int my life outside of my yoga practice. Anyway. I get the hype, ok. I’ve honestly really enjoyed Pilates and I’ll probably be sticking to it for awhile. I really see how yoga and Pilates really complement each other. I wish I could do both!! Unfortunately there aren’t any studios in my area who offer both for a reasonable price. I think I’m going to get a punch card, however. I miss my 8pm Wednesday yin and the occasional power vinyasa sweat every once in awhile! submitted by /u/doubleblackdoggos to r/pilates [link] [comments]

I saw a Reddit post (now deleted) that a passenger on Ruby Princess was told fitness classes cost money even though they have the Premier package. To all my nonconventional Pilates Princesses/Queens/Princes/Kings
I comment in this subReddit all the time, urging those who are older, new to fitness, and overall just don't fit the mid 20's fitness influencer mold to enjoy Pilates and their practice. I wanted to share an experience I had today. I walked into a new studio this morning in my almost 50-year-old body with oodles of injuries, my thrift store leggings, messy ponytail, no makeup, and Pink Floyd t-shirt, ready to enjoy a mat class. I'm a Pilates instructor and an old lady version of an athlete. I do triathlons. I lift, I spin, I run, I am on my mat or reformer for hours every week, and in love with the perfectly imperfect body that carries me through life. I am also 5'10" with major shoulders, boobs, hips, and a booty. I can bench press more than most men and also enjoy my sourdough bread and pasta. I have a fake knee and a lumbar spine injury. So, not a typical Pilates body at all. I saw a chic studio full of stunning 22-year-old women in expensive matching leggings and sports bras with full makeup on. They were a collection of colorful, airbrushed creatures. There were long legs, tanned 6 packs, and fake eyelashes as far as the eye could see. They were so gorgeous--like a movie set. I had this moment of incredible, crushing doubt. I felt so out of place. I felt old, ugly, overweight, and scuffy. I wanted to shrink myself to make myself fit into a mold of what a Pilates student should look like. It was crushing. I stayed, and the class was great. My fellow students were really welcoming and fun. The instructor was so talented and I was taking mental notes on some of her visual imagery to incorporate into my own classes. The moves were challenging (what mat move doesn't test you?) but doable. I had all these worries and insecurities and you know what--it was all in my head! I was the only person who thought I was out of place. There is no perfect Pilates body or one size fits all Pilates experience. submitted by /u/IndependentEarth123 to r/pilates [link] [comments]

Astoria Activewear - is it worth it for a pilates princess?
It’s really hard for me to find good quality, yet cute pieces of activewear. I came across Astoria Activewear, but I don’t know if it’s worth the money because I don’t live in the USA, so if I buy items worth 200 dollars, I have to pay around 100 dollars extra just for import fees and taxes 🫠 But if it’s quality activewear, I’ll definitely go for it 😊 submitted by /u/Lenchy2403 to r/pinkpilatesprincess [link] [comments]

Pilates Princess vs Muscle Mommy… Who said you can’t be both?
So apparently, you can’t be both a Muscle Mommy and a Pilates Princess, it’s against some unwritten gym rule. You have to pick a side and pretend the other doesn’t exist. Like… who decided this?? Since when does lifting heavy mean you can’t also be flexible and graceful? Since when does Pilates mean you’re weak? Make it make sense. This whole trend of comparing bodies just to feel better about your own? So unnecessary. You don’t have to put someone else down to feel good about your progress. Trust me, you can do both, and you’ll look absolutely top tier🤌 ✨ Strength and mobility? Muscles and elegance? A balanced, injury free body? That’s the real win. Or (and hear me out) you could just train how you want and stop making it a competition. IDK, wild concept🙃 submitted by /u/0kie- to r/gymsnark [link] [comments]
