This post is directly addressing u/Wopster’s comment on my “The Row” thread. He stated that modern Ralph Lauren quality is comparable to Uniqlo and Zara. This post gives objective evidence why that isn’t true specifically for Polo Ralph Lauren. I’m comparing my Ralph Lauren Whitman chinos in Tan to the Uniqlo pleated wide trousers in Black. I love both of these pants for different reasons, but they are far from similar in quality. First observe the binded hems and flat felled seams on the spine of the Ralph Lauren, while the Uniqlo has more surging which is more prone to fraying. Look at the Uniqlo hem which is surged, compare to the RL hem which is stitched. Look at that cheap small zipper on the Uniqlo with tiny plastic teeth compared to the thick boi Talon metal zipper of the Ralph Lauren. Talon is a zipper brand that all the heritage boys love for its durability. He had no reason to put this caliber zipper on there, but he did. Lastly, just from a materials perspective, the Ralph Lauren is a heavyweight 100% ringspun cotton, which is all natural and the yarn is twisted to create a fabric that is more resistant to fraying. It is also incredibly thick for a cotton Chino. The Uniqlo uses a large percentage of polyester, which obviously isn’t ideal. So yeah, while it’s contrarian and a bit edgy to say Ralph Lauren and Uniqlo are the same quality, the truth is, that is just not the case for modern day PRL. Perhaps for the stuff you find at Marshall’s, but that’s not what we’re talking about. Yes anything made in the past was better. Especially Ralph Lauren union made in the USA stuff. But I have handled a vintage union made RL 67 and I also own a modern one. The vintage one is perhaps a little bit better in quality but honestly, I cannot say it is that much better. I’m not saying RL is not overpriced. They are (a damn polo bear sweater cost almost 4 figures) but Ralphy boy is still making hell of a quality product in 2026 I cannot name another brand that has been around for as long as his which is still turning out a reasonably high-quality product. Accounting for inflation he’s not even charging that much more than he did back in the day.
