I worked in admin for nearly 20 years before transitioning to sheet metal fabrication so I know how essential those roles are and really value them for the amount of bullshit they deal with on my behalf. I work as a senior fabricator at a sheet metal business. I’m welding, using power tools, using forklifts, covered in sweat and grime most of my working day, and very obviously not wearing office attire when I’m at work. But still, most of the time when someone (both men and women) comes to our business for the first time, I’m assumed to be “the office girl” if I’m not introduced to them as a fabricator. - I’ve had people ask “Are you allowed to be doing that?” when I’m using power tools, using the forklifts, lifting heavy shit, setting up to weld, ya know, doing my job. Also off this one, people assume I’ve stepped out of my admin role to “help” the guys when I’m on the fabrication floor… I’m their boss when the production manager isn’t on the floor. - I walk out of my welding bay to get a drink while wearing welding leathers and my welding helmet flipped up on my head and someone calls out “Are you the office girl?” from the doorway. This has happened multiple times. - When I’ve had to go upstairs to the office, I’ve had clients who are meeting with the business owners ask me to get them a coffee. (The owners, my husband and FIL, at least correct the client and say “She’s a fabricator, getting coffee isn’t part of her job. You can go across the road to the cafe and get a coffee if you want. We’ll wait.”). Even if I go upstairs with one of the fabrication guys and clarify something with the owners, the client will often turn to me and ask for a coffee. - If the owners are showing my work to clients and an admin woman has come with the client, she usually tries to bond with me by saying something like “All this talk about boy work is so boring”. You were told that “boy work” is my work when I was introduced to you! - Also, and this is probably the pettiest thing, just being referred to as the office “girl” is annoying when I’m a nearly 40 year old woman. I mean, I’m dealing with perimenopause symptoms FFS! Sure, women who work in admin at industrial businesses here in Australia are rarely wearing what would be considered standard office attire (they usually wear a polo with the company logo, jeans, and sneakers or boots), but they certainly aren’t wearing steel caps, a full tool belt, cargo pants with a bunch more tools shoved in the pockets, and a flame retardant shirt or full welding PPE. I've purchased a lot of polo shirts for work, since now I work in a business casual IT office. I normally wear a Men's Large in regular shirts, so I started with that, but I quickly realized that the polos didn't look that good on me, because they were baggy and looked "loose". I saw some other guys in my office, and their outfits looked much cleaner - tighter polos, tucked in to their pants, etc. So I start buying Mediums. Tucked them into my pants. And yet, they STILL look baggy on me and spill over my waistline, even ones that I got that were supposed to be slim-fitting. I know brand quality matters, and the shirts I've gotten have just been from Goodwill, so I guess there's that. Also, it's worth noting that my Goodwills don't have changing rooms, and I'm almost confident that my local Walmart doesn't either. When I put on my pants, I'm being extra careful to not scrunch or twist the shirt, but it ends up happening when I start moving anyway. Now, I'm gonna keep it frank, I might have gotten a little smaller. I'm not as consistent in regards to lifting/eating/BJJ because I've been very busy with this job. But even still, there's no way I go from a comfortable Large to maybe even needing a size SMALL in such a short amount of time. I'm not a twig but I'm not huge - just an average athletic build. I live in downtown Tokyo which sees a lot of tourists from all over the world, and when it comes to fashion I always see western (mainly white) tourists stand out. Africans, Asians and Middle Easterners will often wear clothes that are casual, but do not stand out, like long buttoned shirts, jeans etc. The women, especially those from Asia will look very fashionable with floral shirts, dresses, small practical bags etc. Then you look at the western tourists. They either wear outfits that look like they are going hiking in a tropical jungle, complete with oversized survival gear backpacks while doing city sightseeing, or they look like oversized toddlers in shorts, flip-flops and baseball caps. I am 54F and I run a tanning salon. Throw away account. I've been a business owner (different businesses) since the early 2000's and I'm trying to navigate working with the current younger generation. I have two daughters in their early to mid 20's who have taught me a lot about the modern world, and I try to be as openminded and forward thinking as I can be. I also realize that I am somewhat out of touch with the younger customer base, so while I am still the boss, their opinions are strongly taken into consideration. In 2022 we officially got rid of our uniform policy (polo shirt with the company logo and black pants) and I allow the mostly female staff to dress as they like, within reason. I call them all my girls as we are fairly close and I am like their work mom. For the most part, my girls understand what is appropriate and what isn't, but a few of them have started really pushing this policy, to the point where some older customers have complained. Three older women complained about my girls not wearing bras, showing off their midriffs or sometimes having their butt cheeks poking out of their shorts. One woman even stated that her husband and teenage sons often come in just to see the girls and she does not like it. I asked my daughters how they think I should approach this topic at the next meeting. They said that the women who work for me are not girls, they are grown women with their own agency and they should be allowed to wear what they want without being sexualized. They said that they should not be punished because men sexualize them and that the men are problem, not their outfits. At the meeting, this was the exact sentiment repeated by the girls. I agree with this in principle but I had to remind them that although we live in a hot, beachy area of Florida and our customers often come in wearing swimsuits. We are still a business and need to be professional. I implemented a bra requirement policy and found it shocking that they seemed to be so opposed to this rule. As I mentioned, most of my staff is female but I have two lovely young men on my staff who just happen to be gay. They are both sweet, funny and great with customers. But after some particularly hot days, one of the young men has started wearing very thin swim shorts leaving very little to the imagination. About a week ago, one of the girls came to me saying that he makes her very uncomfortable when they work together because she can can clearly see the outline of his you know what. She says that he does things like stretching, standing very close to her and being dangerously close to fully displaying. Now I don't know how to even handle this. The same woman who said that it doesn't matter what you wear and people just shouldn't sexualize others bodies. She's now complaining about seeing the outline of a mans package, a gay man who isn't even remotely interested in her. I don't have HR and I this is such a touchy subject to address for multiple reasons. My daughters say I should have my husband talk to him about not making the girls uncomfortable. This one comes from personal experience. And admittedly, this might be more applicable to those living in urban areas. But maybe those living in suburban and rural areas might find some value in this too. During COVID summer 2020, as New York was only just beginning to get back some momentum, I decided to use rib tanks (sometimes called "wifebeaters") more often as part of my OOTD. This was mainly to make up for lost time, particularly not wearing them for five years. But as inflation swept in during 2022, it had the unintended consequence of keeping clothing costs down. Since I wasn't using my more expensive polos and dress shirts as much, they lasted for much longer. And after five straight years of my "alternative" fashion, I've easily saved hundreds of dollars every year that went to utilities and rent instead. Which is no small feat living in a city as expensive as New York. Which is also why I'm giving the following guidance now. Undershirts of all types are perfectly usable as main shirts. Whether they be rib tanks, t-shirts, v-necks, thermal tops, etc. They're cheap to buy, impressively durable, and can last for years if you know how to maintain them. And depending on how you style them, they can be used as part of usable outfits. That way, you can preserve whatever fancier clothes you have for times when you actually need them. That's how working class men made it work in the past, and it's just as usable today too. Here are a few suggestions to make it work - Keep one set of undershirts for indoor use, and one set for outdoor use. I copied this tip from someone else a few years back, but it's a good one. This has all types of benefits, but a huge one is that it ensures that you go out using the best shirts you've got. Care for your undershirts just as much as you would care for more expensive shirts. This requires you to really educate yourself on DIY maintenance. Like what to do when certain stains happen. Washing them inside out to maintain their lifespan. Changing how you use antiperspirant to avoid armpit stains (tbch you only need one swipe, or two at the most). Doing quality control on your outdoor shirts (e.g. trying them on first to see how they fit) so that you can go out knowing that you're wearing shirts that look nice. Educate yourself a little on color theory. Color is an easy way to make outfits look fresh and new. If you get working knowledge about color theory - neutral colors vs nonneutrals, primary vs secondary colors, basic color combos, etc - you can figure out easy ways to combine different elements to create new outfits. Learn how to dye clothes. Undershirts usually come in white, grey and black. These are all neutral colors, which means they're usable in all kinds of color combos. But in case you want shirts in red, green, blue, orange, etc, buying undershirts in those colors might be more pricey. If you learn how to dye your own undershirts, you can cut out extra clothing costs that way too. (FYI - I've been told that Kool-Aid can be a pretty cheap and effective dye material). The clothing you wear around the shirts is what will make the outfit work. Since the undershirts will be the main shirts, the other clothes are what will help make the outfits come alive. After all, a good outfit is the sum of its parts. I suggest the following in your wardrobe: 3-4 light jackets (two in neutral colors) 3-4 heavy midweight jackets (two in neutral colors) for colder temps 3-4 pants (two of them in neutral colors, and blue denim is considered neutral) 3-4 shorts (two of them in neutral colors, and blue denim is considered neutral) A winter coat for the coldest temps, with which you can layer the midweight jacket and shirt for warmth Accessories (hats, necklaces, bracelets, etc) With your knowledge about color theory, you can create so many different outfits this way. And as long as you follow the care instructions, each of these can last for months or even years before needing to be replaced. And thus, in one fell swoop, you've set yourself up to dress fresh and new every day without needing to buy much else. The benefits can be substantial. Given that the average household spends at least $1500 a year on clothes, this is a great way to free up money for other things. You can spend much more time and energy focusing on other tasks. You can go places with cheap looks that are respectable. And you can save your better clothes for when you need them, like for job interviews (assuming that we'll still have a working economy in a few months). I put conservative in quotes because I don’t think shilling for a wannabe autocrat is conservative in any way, but they still call themselves conservatives. I’ll only be here for a few months, but this dynamic has cracked me up in interactions with seemingly ordinary strangers around town. It’s truly astounding how many people have had their brain completely warped by insane right wing media. What I mean by this is that they’ll find any opportunity that usually doesn’t have anything to do with their grievance as something to complain about how the country is going to hell, everything is ruined, etc., despite the fact that literally nothing has changed about the thing they’re upset about. They get this forlorn, teary look in their eyes, stare off into the distance, and talk about the country as though we’re living in some apocalyptic hell-scape, ever since Biden came in and ended the before times… except they’ll do this in a totally mundane chic fil a parking lot or something next to their new Chevrolet, with their kids in the back of the car coming home from soccer practice. Example: I’m getting gas, and some boomer notices it’s significantly cheaper than it was a few days ago. He points to it and starts a conversation by proclaiming “I can’t believe Biden thinks he can buy our vote with some cheap gas… it’s criminal what he’s done, destroyed all of our oil… China is laughing at us.” Didn’t y’all complain about gas prices for years?? Obviously this isn’t a serious problem, just an annoying one. I’m hoping some females may be able to help me out?! I’m the marketing manager for a small business in a male-dominated industry. I am the only female employee which is absolutely not a problem except for this one thing… The guys all wear these company provided polo shirts basically every day that have our logo on them. I’d describe them as nice looking Jersey material golf shirts. They also have sweatshirts, vests, and jackets with our logo on them, basically an outfit for any occasion lol. Anyways, the shirts are given to employees for free and there are two sizes: Men’s Large and Extra Large. To be fair they were ordered before I ever worked there. I’m a slim/average 5’8” woman and even the large is like a ridiculous tent dress on me. As the marketing manager I attend a lot of events where they wear these shirts. For our company photos my boss told me to go buy a black short sleeved polo and a black collared dress shirt that he took and got embroidered for me (I was reimbursed). That’s all I have. Have a good week ahead! There are way too many dudes who kena the feedback of "You look too plain/boring/uniqlo/fugly". I don't think it's fair to call our local dudes ugly or lazy; they're busy balancing the (unfair) societal expectation of being/becoming providers and the human need of having a life. So here's a step-by-step style guide. This guide has 5 parts: Your Colours Choosing Fabrics Cuttings Coordinating Outfits Wardrobe Curation & Shopping Part 1: Your Colours Notice how Uniqlo's clothes look so good on the model, but so plain on commoners? Well, Uniqlo is mass market, so the clothes need to look decent on everyone, but not necessarily make anyone look exceptional. That said, you will find stuff that makes you look extra good at Uniqlo (and other shops), once you know which colours flatter you. If anything, it's now the season to try colours, after 2 years of WFH-induced moodiness. Simplest litmus test: Borrow your family's jewellery. Find 1 silver and 1 gold piece. The chunkier, the better, and try to make sure both pieces have a similar lustre. Then place them against your face, and see which one makes you look more radiant. If the silver looks better, you have a cool undertone. Your colours are blue-green, blue, purple. Basically, anything from Grab delivery bag green to recycling bin blue to eggplant purple. If you look better with gold, you have a warm undertone. Red, orange, yellow, yellow-green. Think fire engine red to M1 orange to lemon yellow. If you look ok with both, you have a neutral undertone. Congratulations, you'll look ok in many colours, but you'll need to try harder to be exceptional. No women around to lend you jewellery? Borrow your bros and do this exercise together. If you look better (less cui) in the Army No.4, you're warm undertoned. If you look better in the RSAF No.4, you're cool undertoned. (DW, I'll mention the Navy No.4 later.) Once you know this, you can start experimenting with colour saturation and brightness. Cool-toned people: Try pastel blue, blue grey, bright blue, and navy blue. Once you find the types of blue that make you look good, find the green/purple version of it. Warm-toned people: Try pastel sakura pink (yes, if LHL can wear pink, so can you), ashy-grey-red, brick red, fire engine red, and burgundy red. Same logic as the cool-toned people. Neutral-toned people: Try pastel-mint, tiffany blue, and dark teal. Or, if your skin is a bit more yellow, try the warm-toned colours. More pink, try cool-toned. Folks who look good in the Navy No.4, you're probably really fair or really dark. This means you can try bold and saturated colours, so go for it. WAIT A MINUTE, where are my neutrals?! Easy. Warm-toned people - go for browns and khaki. Cool-toned people can go cool grey, monochrome, or navy. Neutral-toned people, just match based on the above. (You can also try warm greys and cool browns.) Apply the same logic to your shoes; assuming you have a finite budget, you can't go wrong with neutral-coloured shoes. I also recommend getting bags and belts that are the same colour as your shoes. (It'll make coordinating outfits so much easier.) Part 2: Choosing Fabrics Yeah, we're all lazy people living busy lives in a hot and expensive country. So, our clothes need to match these keywords: breathable, wrinkle-resistant, and good value. A few pointers for tops. Litmus test: Scrunch up the fabric in your hands. If it looks like a primary school kid's worksheet when you straighten it again, don't buy it. (Idk about y'all, but if a piece of clothing can't look decent with just a quick steam, I'm not buying it.) Reach into the middle of the pile/stack of the tops. If it doesn't feel warm, you can buy it. (Doesn't count if the items are right under a super cold aircon vent ah.) 100% cotton isn't a guarantee of breathability/comfort/performance; at lower price brackets, cotton blends are usually better. (Take a look at the Airism label.) This rule of thumb will start to go out of the window when you look at tops that cross $50. If you insist on 100% cotton, pay attention to the thickness. Contrary to conventional wisdom in seasonal countries, breathableness trumps durability every time. Linen (blends) are AWESOME for comfort, but usually not wrinkle-resistant at a lower price point. Do the scrunch test; if you find a plain linen shirt that looks good on you, is opaque enough to censor your nips (even in cold rooms), doesn't wrinkle (much), AND is within your budget, just buy 2 pieces in different colours. Then repurchase more if you really love it and it's in very good condition after 5-10 washes. Pants and bottoms are a whole different ball game and probably require a whole separate guide. Let's just talk about finding comfortable casual long pants. Visit shops that do outdoor/camping/hiking clothes. Then look for pants that don't wrinkle badly (scrunch test!). Also, bonus points if the pants are convertible (the leg portions can be detached); idk how to describe how amazing those are on rainy days. You should also check out the hiking shirts there. Even more bonus points if the pants' cutting fit your frame nicely. Part 3: Cuttings Let's start with t-shirts. The sleeves need to start where your shoulder ends. Unless you're really into the skateboarder aesthetic (or have a very specific set of body proportions), the sleeve-to-shoulder seam should land nicely on the edge of your shoulders. The thicker/shorter your neck and the broader your shoulder, the wider your collar needs to be. V collars work too. (Buibuis take note!) Also, if you're on the juicy/chunky side, or have a round jaw, avoid polo tees like the plague. The sleeves should end about midway on your biceps. Also, they shouldn't be too tight; lift your arms up in the fitting room. You shouldn't feel any constriction. (Unless you're really damn fit and can rock that muscleman style.) Length-wise, just tuck in, then raise your arms all the way up. If it doesn't pop out of your pants, it'll do. Unless you have washboard abs and don't mind flashing people. Of course, the tee shouldn't be so long that it can cover your butt la. Unless you're a skater, b-boy, rapper or something like that. Is the collar made from the same fabric as the rest of the tee? If yes, don't buy. It'll definitely warp and develop weird creases. The collar has to be made of a slightly ribbed stretchy material. I know this because I've made this mistake before. The skinnier you are, the bigger the design on the tee can be. Onwards to shirts. ALWAYS try before you buy. They are less forgiving than tees, and tailoring isn't always a viable or wallet-friendly option. The longer and slimmer your neck, the higher your collar can go. Round-jawed dudes should try mandarin collars. Slim-cut for him isn't always slim-cut for you. Everyone is juicy in different spots, so the size/length/position of the darts for the slim-cut effect will result in varying levels of effectiveness. Of course, perform the tuck-in-and-lift-arm test. At a bare minimum, the shirt shouldn't pop out of your pants and you shouldn't feel any constriction when your arms are parallel with your shoulders. Re: Bottoms Besides fitting you well around the belly and hips, you also need to look at the fit around your thighs. Unless you have nice legs, the rule of thumb is your thigh circumference + 5cm. It'll be just nice to outline your figure and provide adequate comfort. (It applies for the buibui bros as well; too much fabric will make you look super cui, even though it covers everything.) Shorts Unless you're rocking a certain style, or have very nice/long/slim legs, the length should be around your kneecap, up to 0-5cm above your knee. Pants Avoid pants with elastic cuffs like the plague. Unless you wear a lot of boots, and/or have nice legs. 🙃 There are a thousand and one cuttings. (Really a hell lot to learn.) So, focus on getting a couple of nice straight-cut pants first. Full-length pants should end between the top of your ankle joint and the top of your heel bone. Just nice for a peek at your socks. For other lengths, the rule of thumb is it should end where the slim-enough part of your calves start. HIGHLY personal as it depends on your leg shape; explore later. Always try before you buy. They can be less forgiving than shorts. Part 4: Coordinating Outfits Oh boy. This part is yet another area of study; which is why people pay stylists. So, a few easy tips. Take a photo of the mannequin in the shop when you buy the item. Just copy the shop assistant's homework! If the colours are next to each other on the rainbow, it'll work fine. For example, a dark forest green top will go with blue bottoms. Or a orange top with light brown bottoms. Stick to 2-3 main colours in an outfit. Yes, black and white are colours too. Black and white = 2 colours. Copy the designer's homework - if the colour exists on the tee/shirt, just wear more of it. (You can also vary the brightness and saturation.) But you know what, it's a common enough piece that has cramped so many dudes' styles that I think it's worth discussing. So, the obvious answer is a pair of dark blue jeans, which looks SUPER dowdy. (Hell, even the model looks miserable in it.) Unbutton that top button and put on a pale blue pair of shorts instead, maybe in a super light jeans fabric. Then white sneakers, white bag, done. (Black, grey, green, or red works too.) This logic applies to everything. Yes, even your weeb tee. Try a dark teal bottom with your Hatsune Miku tee, or a dark pink/dark red pair of shorts with your Anya Forger tee. Of course, repeating this exercise for everything in your wardrobe will probably cause it to explode exponentially. This brings us to... Part 5: Wardrobe Curation & Shopping Option 1: Remember the colour test in step 1? Look at your wardrobe first; the odds are good that you already have stuff that suits you. Streamline down to 1-2 colours that suit you (and make you happy to wear), and the neutrals that match it. (Keep the blacks, whites, and jeans too.) Then add whatever items contain the colours you picked. Then store/sell/donate everything else that doesn't match or suit you. Then go shopping if need be. Option 2: Of course, if you absolutely hate your current style (or have a lot of budget), go hunt for a super unique patterned/printed shirt that looks REALLY GOOD on you. Then buy a printed tee that is a close sibling of that shirt. Then REALLY copy the designers' homework. Buy a top and a bottom for each colour found on the two tops. Then fill up with the basics. At the end of the exercise, your wardrobe should have: 10 solid colour tops: A few tees and a few shirts, in black/white/neutral and the colours you chose. 1-2 patterned tops that match the above colours. 2-3 pairs of jeans - light blue, blue, dark blue, grey, black. 3 pairs of pants in neutral colours. 3+ pairs of shorts in jeans or neutral colours. 1-3 pairs of shorts/pants in your signature colour(s) 1 set of bags/shoes/accessories in the same neutral colour (some accents and slight variations are fine, but largely must be the same.) If you have budget, get another set in your favourite colour or a colour that suits you. You can go crazy, because it's more forgiving. But do make sure the item sets are a close match in colour. Bonus points if the sets contrast well with what you own. Example 1: You're cool-toned, and most of your wardrobe is various shades of blue and green. Get a pair of red sneakers, a red cap/watch, and a casual red sling bag. Done. Example 2: You like blue colour, but you're warm-toned and dark-skinned, so your wardrobe is white, yellow, and brown. But, the most cost-effective and easy option is to get these in your neutral colour. Where to go: Basics: Uniqlo. It is popular for good reason. If you have a bit more budget, go visit Zara, MUJI, Mango, or the outlet shops at IMM. Easties can go Changi City Point. Hiking outdoors: This is for weather-appropriate pants and shirts. Visit the big Decathlon outlets, or go to [Velocity@Novena](mailto:Velocity@Novena). If you have budget, try Timberland. Edgy style (and people who like ADLV tees): Pull & Bear. DOT Singapore. Shirts: Besides the shops listed under Basics, you can also try department stores. Plenty of good options, especially if you choose colours that feel younger or have boyishly-cute prints. Here are a few points from there that I'd like to comment on. The quality & cutting at ZARA & Mango can be quite inconsistent, but you will find some gems there. Coz there's nothing sadder than stylish-but-tired feet and faces on a nice day out. Consider investing in a really nice and stylish pair, and maintain them well. But there is no Hope. I don’t know what you thought you found about her, but the address you gave me doesn’t exist. The name you gave me leads to an 86 year old woman who is in a coma. Your client doesn’t exist.” My mouth was dry. “But I saw her.” “Whoever you saw was not Hope. And you know I support your career choice. Why the hell would I scare you out of it? All I ever do is protect you.” Without saying goodbye I hung up. I was empty. I tried to describe the house to the cops but I only knew it from the inside and I had no idea where it was. I described the woman and the old man, but it didn’t matter. I ended up just paying for my plane ticket home, curling up in my bed, and sleeping for the next few days. Jesse came over and held me. Before we start… So I know polo shirts are a polarizing subject around here. If you don’t like the look of them, that’s perfectly fine. You are most certainly entitled to that opinion and I don’t fault you for having it. The fact remains, however, that polos are popular and they’re not going anywhere anytime soon. Why not wear them well? This guide aims to help those who don’t have an aversion for polos find the good ones or, for anyone curious, to maybe learn something they didn’t previously know. Criticism is fine, but let’s keep it constructive. Thanks for understanding – let’s get on with it :] Why the hate? Not too long ago, someone started a thread polling MFA users on what one item they understood or liked the least. The runaway “winner” was the polo shirt. Voila What?? Less understood than drop crotch pants?? Hated more than boat shoes?!? This is madness!! Couldn’t believe what I was reading - I’d go as far as saying that polos are a staple item in any man’s wardrobe. Finding one you’d like shouldn’t be too difficult. They come in tons of styles and can be made from a variety of materials. Considering how many men’s clothing brands carry/make polos (literally hundreds), you should be able to find at least one that flatters your form and suits your fancy. Polos can be rrreallll comfortable too – maybe not as comfortable as your favorite t-shirt, but hey, you can’t wear that to work, now can you? Furthermore, a well-fitting polo can look pretty damn smart and help to accentuate a good physique. Not saying they’re bad for those of us who aren’t in the best of shape, but they look especially nice on dudes with some lean muscle to ‘em. Tell 'em, Mr. Craig ^ your button-ups and OCBDs don’t quite do that. Obviously, I’m big on polo shirts. I think I have 15 or 16 (at last count) in a pretty good assortment of colors and styles. Trying to understand the Anti-Polo camp, I put myself in their shoes and looked for the negatives. I’m wondering if popped collars, boxy fits, massive logos, and that they’re kinda known as “frat boy” shirts are contributing factors toward the bias against polos. I mean…ya..these are all horrific: Nope. Nope. Nope. ^ Douche City, no doubt about it. Bear with me though – I want you to push frat style and bad ‘Casual Friday’ bizcaz fits out from your memory. Let’s start fresh. Let’s start…from the beginning. Origins Despite the “polo” name, it was actually Lacoste than created the shirt, not Ralph Lauren. Back in the day, (nearly a century ago) tennis players wore oxford cloth uniforms called “tennis whites”. The shirts were long-sleeved, had a bit of a stiff collar, they restricted motion, and were rather warm…which wasn’t ideal at all for such an active sport. Rene Lacoste, a tennis star himself, created what he called the “tennis” shirt – made from a looser weave pique cotton with short sleeves, a soft collar, a buttoned placket, and a slightly longer backside. Now known as the “tennis tail”, this helped the shirt to stay tucked in while running about the court. These were considered significant improvements – the shirt was quickly adopted and it’s still popular among professional tennis players and golfers today. Rene was also responsible for the logo later added on the left breast; his nickname was “The Crocodile”. Tennis Whites After retiring from his sport, Rene teamed up with Andre Gillier, a friend and clothing manufacturer, to mass produce the shirt under the newly formed Chemise Lacoste company. So where did the “polo” in “polo shirt” come from? Well, similarly, polo players (the horseback croquet-meets-soccer game) wore uncomfortable wool knit uniforms. They took notice as Rene’s tennis shirt gained in popularity and made the switch. The Hurlingham Polo Club (Argentina) began embroidering the shirts with a logo depicting a polo player. Over time, the “tennis shirt” just became known as the “polo shirt”. It wasn’t until the 1970’s that famed designer, Ralph Lauren, included the style of shirt in his “Polo” line. Borrowing from Hurlingham, an embroidered logo of a polo player his pony was sewn onto the left breast. So, what once was only worn for sport became a staple in summer style for men everywhere. The rest is history. Early 1900s Polo Players Ralph Lauren apparently said that he wanted his clothes and brand to exude a bit of “WASPishness”. Ralph Lauren ^ Bougie as fuck, am I right? Mission accomplished. Any wonder why the polo shirt is so commonly associated with prep style? While I don’t hate prep (I dabble from time to time), I think it’s a little costumey for most folks. The polo shirt CAN be worked into any man’s wardrobe and I intend to show that – let’s talk everyday Business Casual and Casual dress. Let's start with some inspiration: Modern Polo Inspiration ^ While I don't like every fit in that album, I can appreciate how varied these looks are. There really should be something for everybody when it comes to polo shirts. Distinguishing Features Collar Polo collars aren't all that dissimilar to button-up shirt collars – they can come in spread, point, cutaway, or button-down. Some are made to lay flat along the back of the neck and collar bone while others are made to stand at attention. Collar types will be covered extensively in sections to follow. One aside: Polos look a bit stuffy when worn with the collar buttoned – leave at least two of those buttons open. Sleeves Polos come in both short and longsleeve options. Both are great, but it’s the shortsleeve type you’ll see most often. Some polos have slightly longer “shortsleeves” that end below the bicep. While these look closer to the original, I don’t find them to be very flattering. The more modern polo has sleeves ending mid-way down the bicep. Pique cotton polos will often have a cuff made from a ribbed material that hugs the arm. Some find this to be uncomfortable, but I haven’t had an issue with it. Longsleeve polos can also be made into casual or more formal versions. The latter is a really underappreciated piece. I’ve dubbed it the “Perfect BizCaz Shirt” – a hybrid between polos and button-up dress shirts. These look just as well over a pair of jeans as they do under a sportcoat or in a suit. Though l/s polos are still somewhat under the radar, I have been seeing them more and more lately. If you’re bored of your usual business casual outfits, try introducing one of these into your wardrobe. The sleeves feature barrel cuffs and two buttons – one on the cuff and another on the sleeve placket (just like a typical dress shirt). Plackets Unlike a button-up shirt, the placket on a polo shirt only has three or four buttons (like a henley). Some brands/designers add more, but those are few and far between. The placket itself extends from the top of the collar to about the middle of the chest. Some brands beef their plackets up by making them 2-ply (two layers of material sewn together). These are noticeably thicker than most other parts of the shirt; sturdier too. Tennis Tail Mentioned this briefly earlier in the guide – you may have noticed that a lot of polos are longer in the back and they are in the front. That is, of course, intentional. This was first innovated to serve a purpose (to better keep your shirt tucked). Most folks keep their polos untucked these days, but that part of the design has managed to stick around anyhow. Not all brands make them this way, but most still add that extra inch – call it tradition. Types/Uses/Materials The Original – Pique Cotton Can be worn year-round since pique cotton comes in different weights and tighter or looser weaves. The thicker the fabric is and the tighter the weave, the warmer the shirt. The thinner the fabric is and the looser the weave, the cooler the shirt. Because of its weave, pique cotton does have an obvious texture. Though sportcoats, suits, and other articles of clothing are sometimes made from pique, this material is most often associated with polos. Pique cotton polos can be dressed up (to a degree) and dressed down (also to some degree). They can just as easily be worn with pressed chinos as they can with some well-loved denim jeans. As a result, these are favorites on ‘Casual Fridays’. Pique Cotton Polo Button Down Collar Traditional polo shirts have collars that lay flat around the base of the neck and will often warp after being run through the washing machine a few times. Button-Down polos solve that problem beautifully. This type stands up nicely and even gives the collar a slight roll to it – exactly what you’d hope for in an Oxford Cloth Button Down shirt. Because these collars stand upright, they can be layered and not look out of place. I sometimes wear mine with sportcoats – keeps me that much cooler in the summer months. Buttondown Polo Relaxed Cotton The more “relaxed” polos should only be worn in casual outfits. These polos are made from thin and smooth cotton. These can be worn interchangeably with t-shirts and are great lightweight shortsleeve or longsleeve options from spring to fall. The collars are going to “bacon” a bit with these – embrace it. They’re supposed to be casual shirts, after all. Realxed Cotton Polo Indigo/Chambray Full disclosure - I don’t have much experience with these. They’re clearly meant to be another casual option – you wouldn’t wear one of these to the office. These have the appearance of denim, but they’re nowhere near as stiff or dense. They’ll have a little more heft than ‘relaxed cotton polos’, however. These don’t really fit into my style, but I included them in this guide because I can easily see them working well in others’ wardrobes. Chambray Polo Wool/Blends Again, these can be worked into casual fits as well as business casual fits. Just as with pique cotton, wool can come in varying weights and warmth. I find these to be somewhat of a rare breed. It’s not too often you find polos in wool and cashmere options. While I like them, just keep in mind that they will pill overtime and it seems there’s always going to be stray fibers poking out. Wool Polo Long Sleeved Polo Love ‘em. You may have seen my dedication to longsleeve polos yesterday where I tried to show their versatility. I learned that r/all wasn’t much of a fan, but maybe you will be! These can be made into more casual shirts (ribbed cotton cuff) or more formal shirts (buttoned barrel cuff) though they’ll always lean more casual. Just as with Button-Down polos, these can be layered under sportcoats or, if you’re feeling like doing something different, with the right kind of suit. Check out my l/s polo album for examples: Longsleeve Polo Fit How the shirt fits matters more than anything else about it. Yours could be made from the finest materials and cost a small fortune, but it’s no good to you unless it fits. Let’s take a look at Dan Trepanier here for a good example of proper fit: Fit Shoulders – see where the seam connecting the sleeve to the body of the shirt lays on Dan’s shoulder? That’s the sweet spot – his polo shouldn’t feel snug across his back and his arms will move unrestricted. Body – Let’s turn our attention to the sides of Dan’s torso. The fabric of the shirt should skim his body, not hug it or show a noticeable amount of excess material. The shirt follows the lines of his body without clinging to it. Sleeves – Dan’s sleeves end about midway down his bicep. Any more than that and your polo is probably too big on you. Also notice how Dan’s arms fill out the sleeves, but not to the point where they’re constrictive. Hem – Shirts that are meant to be left untucked should end just a couple inches below your belt. If it’s shorter than that, you may need a larger size. Longer than that and the shirt may to be big on you. Having a hard time finding a good fit? You CAN go custom/Made-to-Measure if you prefer.
