I need to work on my elevator pitch, but I built an iOS app that makes easier and faster to add your collections to Obsidian. I have been using Markdown, Frontmatter, and Jekyll as a hobbyist and for work. And I love everything about Markdown + Frontmatter. So when I heard about Obsidian, it represented a portable system that combined my mobile notes with Markdown and Frontmatter in a system that was incredibly flexible AND had so many diverse ideas, plugins, and extensions. The possibilities are endless, as far as my imagination can go. I then saw a video from Dann Berg called "How to create a template in Obsidian (Beginner's Tutorial)" and I realized that my imagination was not big enough. I could dream bigger. With DataView, Templater, Meta Bind, Backlinks, and especially Bases there were so many options that Obsidian made possible. I then saw videos of people tracking their books in Obsidian (I versus AI), about tracking their movies in Obsidian (Nick Milo), about tracking their video game collections in Obsidian (Max Frequency), and my mind exploded. I love books, I love movies, I have video games! But, I have a bunch of limited screen printed posters and I never remember which ones I have, I have a bunch of original comic art and I don't have an inventory readily available, I also have a huge collection of collectibles (action figures and toys) and I hate it when I buy duplicates and I never know where in storage they are. So I started using Dann's ideas to capture my poster collection. I captured publisher, artist, theme, size, date purchased, price, image, item number, edition number, etc. And it was AMAZING. for the firs time ever, I had a thumbnail view of my collection. I could define the size of the thumbnail, decide what to show, filter by publisher, artist, etc. But now I wanted more! So I did the same for my original comic art. Instead of downloading the images from the publisher's site like I did with the posters, I scanned all of the artwork and captured everything that was important like publisher, title, issue number, volume number, penciler, inker, colorist, letterer, writer, purchase date, purchase price, etc. I was addicted, I wanted to digitize all of my collections. My toy collection was next. But I hit a wall. Unlike my posters or artwork, the toys were in containers in my storage unit, and I wanted to take pictures of the front and back of the toy boxes, I wanted to know in which box they were located, I wanted to know the manufacturer, theme, item name, etc., and it quickly became evident that there was no way that I would be able to finish this task in this lifetime. Even though I had Obsidian on my phone and it was synching (with Syncthing) to my home computer, adding each toy was taking a lot of time. I needed to take pictures, google information, and in the end, I still needed a way to track where the item was actually located. There had to be a better way. A faster way for me to input item data into Obsidian. Since everything was a markdown file and there was a templated convention for file layouts, and I knew that writing tools/plugins was a valid approach, I thought why don't I build something that will make my life easier and faster. I hadn't written an iOS app in about 5 years, and I thought it would be fun to write something for me. So I did and I went a little crazy. It really is exactly what I was looking for. I built something that made it possible to capture a good chunk of my toys (153 so far), all of my video games (61), and I just started on my DVD's/BlueRays (and of course I had already captured the posters and original comic art with Obsidian). The app itself works with whatever filesystem layout you have in Obsidian, but in general one folder per collection, one asset folder (for images and pdf's), and a template file (compatible with Templater plugin). You create a collection, define what properties you wish to track, set the property types (string, list, date, currency, image, document, etc.), and then you can get started capturing your collection. This is already faster than Obsidian, I can take pictures (I actually scan the boxes with the app), I can templetize the file names, I can automatically set the capture date, etc. But adding information like manufacturer, description, etc. was time consuming. So I added a barcode scanner that would connect to an API provide a UPC and populate an item with the return values. This improved capture speed greatly, but I still had a problem, how do I know where I am keeping the toys (in which container)? So I added a concept of storage locations and containers to the app, so you could track them in the item properties, and thereby see where your stuff was. But adding them to the properties was not really a big deal (even though you could view every container or collectible in a location), I wanted speed. This is when I made it possible to generate QR codes for the locations and containers, and I added storage location and storage container property types, where if you add properties of those types to an item, you could then scan the QR code to quickly add the container/location to your item as part of the add new item flow. So the add new item flow would start with a barcode scan, then pictures of the front and back of the boxes, and finally a scan of the container QR code, and you were done. Sometimes the API doesn't find anything, or sometimes the data is a little off, but in general, it is SOOO much faster than doing it manually. I've been using the app since December and I think I've worked all of the kinks out (at least for my use cases). I'm ready to share it with everyone. The app is iOS only right now (it's been a couple of years since I wrote and Android app, so that might be something to do next) and it is meant to work with Obsidian and Syncthing, but if you don't have those, it works as a standalone app. I don't capture any data, usage or otherwise, this is meant to be a useful tool. I am charging $3.99 with that hopes that it will pay for the Apple Developer account, but even if it doesn't, it has scratched an itch that my ADHD brain has had for a while. After I finish capturing the toys and movies, I need to capture my home electronics, books, tools... I am working on organizing a lot of hardware from mcmaster. I think I have a way to get all the info where I need it to be fairly quickly there are a few things I am having a hard time creating. My skills with sheets is fairly limited. I am able to create some basic equations but thats about my highest understanding. The things I would like my sheet to do: 1: I would like a column to be able to take data from one other column and create a link to the page for that part. The link is is a combo of one standard string(i think thats the right term)with a part number(info from a cell) ex: https://www.mcmaster.com/91251A431/ 2: I would like another column to create a qr code that takes me to that link. 3: I would like to print labels with info from these columns like part no, description and qr code. The point is to use the qr code to quickly take one of the people managing the hardware to the page for that part so we can add a qty to a cart. Scan the code, add to cart, move to the next. Why YSK: Label makers are extremely useful for organzing you stuff. It may sound like overkill but in reality its extremely useful in helping to organize your life. To be clear you can get potentially any kind of label maker. I have an ancient Brother label maker that has a tiny LCD screen and almost no advanced features yet even that is super useful. You can also get a manual Dymo type label maker that is manual and doesn't even use batteries/power to work. And based on my experience the labels produced especially using a thermal printer tend to last a very long time and look very professional. Important uses include: Labelling obscure cables and power adapters for devices, especially if you don't use them often. This can save a ton of time and might even prevent someone throwing an important thing in the trash! Labeling bins and storage containers where you keep things EG Short Network Cables,winter clothes etc. Add warning lables to equipment if the old warning label came off or doesn't have one. eg On a stroller : Remove child before folding. jk Label various cables in your house like network cables for your camera, computers cables if you have a bunch especially with Multi-Monitor setups. Last but not least it can make it easier for others to follow your storage rules. Eg Your partner might forget where you want certain things to be stored, instead of telling the person for the millionth time just label it! Also many (digital) label makers have advanced features, make sure to check if the one you want to buy has that feature: double line printing, the writing gets smaller but you can add more information per label. vertical printing. Before I start my post I would like to make a premise. I posted this same post on another subreddit just a day ago and many people have almost attacked me for my opinions, maybe it was the wrong subreddit. To avoid any misunderstandings, however, I want to clarify three things: My trip was largely positive. My opinion is positive, not negative. I'd like people to focus on the positives rather than the few negatives. Also it is limited to my experience as a 13 days tourist, of course some things could be wrong (sometimes Maps gave me for sure slightly incorrect directions, other times I might not have noticed some things that were there, etc...) so take it with a grain of salt as one experience. I don't think not knowing English is a positive thing (I say this as an Italian). I never will. So don't ask me to change my mind on that point. Whether you agree or disagree, I ask you to ignore it because they've already discussed that point in the other subreddit, and I don't think it's the focus of the experience. I'll be clear, however: I won't respond to anyone who raises that point and will stick to my opinion. My trip isn't just about Tokyo. I hope this is okay even though the subreddit is called Tokyo Travel. That's why I didn't post here in the first place. I sincerely hope it's okay, but if it isn't, just let me know and I'll remove the post (or, if you prefer, just remove it without notifying me). I didn't see anything against it in the rules, and on my tour I also visited Akihabara and Kotoku-In, which are part of Tokyo and were important parts of my trip. But I understand that my trip also includes other destinations and is therefore not specific to Tokyo. I took a 13-day trip to Japan with my brother, from Tokyo (Kotoko-In)->Nagoya->Shirakawa->Nagoya->Kyoto->Hiroshima->Miyajima Island->Himeji->Kobe->Osaka->Nara->Akihabara (Tokyo) (3 days). I think it was a special trip that deserves a few words, specifically about what I liked and what I didn't like about Japan, but also some general advice for anyone planning to visit this country. First thing that I want to address is english level in japan: Given that I'm Italian and English isn't my native language, but I think I speak it fairly well, in Japan I don't think English is important at all. Even my mother, who only has basic English knowledge (like she knows numbers, a few words and some really basic sentences), knows more than 99% of Japanese people, and even though she can't speak it well at all, if she needs to help someone, she can make do with gestures and make herself understood (I have seen my mother "converse" with her hands more successfully than I thought possible several times with foreigners, sometimes even with foreigners who knew neither English nor Italian (in which I was therefore unable to make myself understood)). In my experience, Japanese people speak almost exclusively Japanese and don't do anything to make themselves understood (I don't speak Japanese, but I understand the simplest sentences, enough to understand the general context when I watch anime without subtitles... but that's definitely not enough because Japanese people speak very quiet, very quickly, and don't give any kind of hand signals about what they mean... they often refuse to even look at the translator). During the two weeks I was there, I somehow managed, but only thanks to using Google Lens, Maps, and the internet for most of the information. Asking the Japanese was almost always impossible or very difficult. On several occasions, they even gave incorrect information. And let me be clear: I wasn't expecting high levels of English. As an Italian, almost no older people here in Italy speak it, and many younger people speak it very poorly. But I certainly didn't expect a level of English that was zero or close to zero, even among those who work in tourism (in hotels and restaurants in particular). There were a few exceptions of course: - One old man from Kyoto, he was the first friendly person we met. Ironically, he not only spoke English but also some Italian and had even studied in Italy. - A class of elementary school students on a field trip to the Hiroshima Memorial Site interviewed us in English. They spoke English as you'd expect from elementary school kids learning it, and honestly, it was a level of English I'd expect from most people outside of english speaking countries... but my brother and I were amazed at how far ahead these kids were compared to everyone else. - a young man, he was probably around 20-30 years old in Akihabara. He wanted to have a conversation in English to see if his level was good. I'm not a native speaker, but he was more or less at my level, so I'd say more than excellent. It was a very entertaining conversation, considering I'd barely spoken to anyone except my brother for most of the vacation. (- a guy from the Netherlands, who was doing laundry at the laundromat while we were doing it too). I have to admit that I didn't like this aspect of Japan because I would have liked to communicate more with them and also because I even know a few phrases in Japanese, but the latter is really difficult and as a tourist I obviously couldn't know it that well. But I think the worst part was not understanding what you're buying since most of the labels in stores are only in Japanese and Google Lens doesn't always help. I have no advice for this point... unless one wants to learn Japanese before going on holiday (which I think very few will do), I think the only thing to do is accept that one won't be able to converse much and prepare oneself with translators and the like. The worst thing that happened to us was dealing with an old man at the Shirakawa luggage storage facility who one day asked us for 1,000 yen, and the next day wanted 1,300 yen to hold our same bags for fewer hours. He wouldn't explain why, or even look at the translator to understand we were asking for an explanation. Luckily, the Shirakawa Open-Air Museum held our bags for those few hours, and in the meantime, we also enjoyed the museum (one of the most beautiful). We even paid less for the ticket including luggage storage (which was included). Unfortunately, the coin locker in Shirakawa is small, and the only hotel in the area doesn't hold bags before and after check-in/out (the only hotel in Japan that doesn't, in my experience). Public transportation is always touted as being among the best in the world in Japan, and our experience was positive but not as positive as we thought it would be. First of all, like everything in Japan, cash was practically mandatory. Italy is among the places in the world where the cash-only culture is strongest, but as an Italian who hates paying in cash, I've been able to do almost entirely without it for the last 10 years. For the last three years, even at the local market, many fruit and vegetable stalls have accepted card payments. I've also always paid for public transportation by card ever since I had access to a bank account as an adult. In Japan, topping up your Suica (the card used for public transportation) is essential. Many restaurants (which in Italy have always accepted cards 99% of the time) and many shops accept cash only. That will mean it will be more expensive to pay things in Japan because even if you have a bank account like Revolut or N26 without exchange fees, these accounts often still have a minimum commission for cash withdrawals (and even if they don't have them like Revolut for the first €200, there are ATMs that apply commissions... for example, the atm at 7eleven applied a commission to my brother revolut account, and, while it didn't apply it to my N26 account, N26 still applies a commission for cash withdrawals). There are, however, a couple of positives: Suica and all other IC cards can be used nationwide. In Italy, each region has its own system and they are not compatible with each other. However, we used Suica throughout our trip to Japan. For long-distance shinkansen trains, you can purchase and pay for QR code tickets with your card at https://smart-ex.jp/en/lp/app/ (it was not always working outside japan, but in japan it was always working). We have never encountered a delay. One thing to keep in mind, however, is that not all cities/towns are as well connected by subway as Tokyo. For example, in Kyoto we traveled much more often by bus, and the buses aren't very comfortable (especially because you only get on one side and get off the other, and people can also pay in cash, so the bus stops at the stop until everyone who needs to get off has paid). Also it can be expensive since using Suica means you will always pay the regular rate for a regular ticket... in Turin for example you can get a daily ticket with 3,70€ on the app paying with a card). Still in the end, even with all our travels, we still spent much less than buying the JR pass (and we always booked the most expensive reserved seats on the shinkansen on the website, never the unreserved seats that JR pass holders have access to). So I don't think anybody should make JR pass expecially since a lot of lines in Japan are not JR. Don't worry about the size of your luggage. If you were able to bring it on the plane, it won't exceed the dimensions where you'd need to buy oversized seats. One more suggestion, never assume being close to the station means you are close to the downtown... in Kyoto for example our hotel was close to the station but far from everything else. We got lucky that was the only case. Another suggestion... regular size rooms in hotels for japanese are small. So I suggest to always get an upgrade for the rooms if you can. Expecially if you are travelling not as a couple. I liked the food there (as an Italian I'm almost surprised since I'm also a picky eater) but after 2 weeks I was a little bit tired of it, expecially since it was almost the same for all the two weeks... regional food, for what I've seen (I could be really wrong) is not really a thing in Japan, except for beef. Like in Shirakawa I was able to eat Hida beef, while in Kobe I was able to eat Kobe beef, but the way it was cooked it was the same. Brief summary of the experience We started in Tokyo and spent the day in Kotoku-In. A fun experience but we were tired from the flight so it was not the best as a first day. I suggest anybody to start with something soft for their first day and if you can arrive at 15 so that you can check in and get a shower. We basically dropped our luggage at our hotel before check in and walked all day at Kotoku-In after 15 hours of flying... It was not the best for that reason, but Kotoku-In was great. The day after we got in Nagoya, same deal, Nagoya Castle and, after that, Nagoya science museum. Two wonderful experiences, but if I had to choose now, I'd prefer to have spent more time at the science museum. It was full of things to exeriment, practical science (six floors + a planetarium that we didn't get to see), There is a museum in Italy quite similar in the Marche region but it is only two floors, frankly this one was really beautiful, and we've seen many other castles similar to the one in Nagoya so it would not be a big loss to skip Nagoya castle (it was still a fun experience). The day after we got in Shirakawa by bus (I got the ticket in advance here https://www.highwaybus.com/gp/inbound/index https://www.highwaybus.com/gp/inbound/inbPlanList?lineId=665 ). Shirawaka is, for those who know, the town that inspired Hinamizawa in Higurashi. For a fan of the VN like me it was really an amazing place. I loved it, so many places that were so close to the VN drawings... It was magical. Also I loved the open air museum (a piece of advice: don't pay for entry to individual houses, pay once for the museum and you'll visit dozens of them inside) (yes, it's the same place where you can leave your luggage as an alternative to the dishonest old man). There are a few guest houses in town and a single hotel just outside (easy to get to on foot and, for higurashi fans, the Maebara House and ritual warehouse are nearby). We were in the hotel that also got onsen. I did not loved this hotel expecially since they do not keep luggage before/after check in/out, they do not make any no changes whatsoever to the traditional japanese breakfast (not even if I told them months in advance; for example, I don't like fish. I asked if they could replace the fish with a little more omelette... they said no, even though I asked months in advance and eggs are already on their menu). That said, it's not a bad hotel. It has onsen (really good onsen), and they offer various options throughout the day (yakult, popsicles, and even ramen in the evening). However, I don't recommend booking with breakfast or dinner included. If the onsen food is enough for you, great. Otherwise, you can pop over for dinner at Tenkara Shirakawa (you can book there when you get there during the day or use the form on the linked website (this is their website https://tenkara.jp/menu/index.html and this is the linked website https://hida-gyu-tenkara.stores.jp/inquiry ). The food is excellent (expecially the Hida beef) and it's not too expensive. During the day there are a lot more places open so you can get food in a lot more places (you can even get breakfast in the town). If you are a fan of Higurashi a one day trip is probably not enough, while if you are not I would probably just skip Shirakawa. While it is a really beautiful place it is also very out of the way. I one day trip will basically be a few hours trip since you will need to get out of town in time for the last bus, and even if you get with the first bus you will not arrive before 10:30 am. Still, if you plan the trip well there is time to visit almost everything, but you can be unlucky and get rain when you get there (like we did the first day... we were glad we got the next morning to do everything that we were unable to do the first day, and we still did something the first day even with rain). After Shirakawa we got back to Nagoya just for the first part of the evening, the curry at Nagoya station (at a place called San Marco) I think was among the best of the trip, before going to Kyoto. In Kyoto we saw so many things and stayed two days, what I can suggest is to go early in the morning to the Bamboo Forest (it's worth it and it's free) and that Kinkaku (it has an entrance fee payable only in cash but it's worth it) and Fushimi Inari (free) are the most beautiful places I've seen. There are also a few shrine going by foot to Kinkaku like the Kitano and Hirano Shrine that are worth visiting (and are free enter). Like in Hirano Shrine there is a really old sacred tree that looks like the one in Inuyasha, and Kitano Shrine is so beatiful I was shocked most people took the bus to go directly to the Kinkaku-ji... Basically in Kyoto just walk and you will find a lot of Shrine without even searching for them. And still I didn't love Kyoto since after a while I got a little bit bored of Shrine XD. After Kyoto we got to Hiroshima, the first thing I noticed was the wonderful climate of this town, from a suffocating Tokyo, to a Kyoto where it was not very comfortable, to a Hiroshima where the climate was mild and breezy, despite being much further south. Here the first issue will be were to leave you luggage expecially if you do not have an hotel (we did but it was closer to Miyajima Island but we also wanted to stop at Hiroshima Memorial Park and Museum). Lockers will be probably full for the most part but be aware that if you go deep into the station you will eventually find many coin-operated ones (that accept only coins) which are more likely to be free (this is where my brother and I found a place after finding all the closest ones and those immediately outside the station full). The memorial park and the museum are worth a visit. It was one of the most touching moments of the trip. After that we got near to Miyajima Island in our hotel with onsen too. And the next morning we got to the Miyajima Island. After that we got back and took a train to Himeji. There you can see the Himeji castle and garden. Here you will probably find a locker no problem since the place is full of them (after all most people here pass to visit the castle but do not sleep here). To save time and money, buy tickets on the website. You don't need to worry too much about enter time since we got there at 12, and we still got inside even if the ticket said 14, still if you can arrive at the time you got it for do it. After that (yes it was a full day) we got to Kobe. We eat at Misono Kobe Honten. €300 for two steaks. It wasn't worth it, but it was something we wanted to do anyway. We got a reservation with google without any issue. The Kobe beef was of course really good and cooked perfectly, but it was still way too expensive. Our hotel was great here too, with onsen here too. The day after we got to Osaka, dropped our luggage at the hotel and visited both the Osaka Castle (it is a museum more than a castle, I did not loved it) and the Kaiykan acquarium (it was a fun change of pace, I loved it). After that we got to Nara... Nara park was not the best. The deer aren't confined in any way, so it's impossible to have a picnic, especially since they're quite aggressive (giving them crackers isn't even fun). And after five minutes, the novelty becomes boring. I have to say that maybe this is the only place I would cut from my trip. One more day to Osaka would have been better for sure, you can even go see the park for 1 hour before going back to Tokyo no issue if you want. It was not worth a day. Finally after that we got to Akihabara and I loved it. First of all, as a Steins;Gate fan, there were a lot of places I recognized from the VN, and even the Mailish (MayQuen Nyan Nyan in real life) which was cute. Secondly, it was fun to wander through the various floors of shops selling cards, video games, DVDs, manga, etc., although Radio Kaikan wasn't my favorite (and it also closes much earlier than the others). Trader and Beep Akihabara were my favorites because, as a PC gamer who now only buys digital games (mainly on GoG, Manga Gamer, and Steam), I'd forgotten how much fun buying physical PC games was. Most of them were eroge but I knew that too (it's tradition after all), I'm not a big eroge fan but I still found many gems like Clannad FV, Fate/Stay Night, DoHa DoHa and many more games that are worth the money they ask for. I'm also a developer and even though I'm not a big fan of the hardware part, still seeing parts stores was still fun (the Electric town part is still there). It's one of the few cities in Japan where traffic is often closed and you can walk in the middle of the street. As a non-car person, it was as if the people had reclaimed part of the city back—amazing. In this last 3 days I also went to Skytree and the Pokemon Center and that was fun too (my brother who is a Studio Ghibli fan also had fun at a themed cafe) but for me Akihabara was the most fun part of the trip. I was glad I organized the trip, prioritizing true Japanese tradition and historical Japan. Also because attractions like Ghibli Park and the Nintendo Museum, for some strange reason, were much more expensive than museums, required reservations months in advance (and were often sold out), and were poorly designed sites where it was difficult to get tickets. I know this because my brother initially wanted to go (I was against it from the start), but he also gave up because it was impossible to get tickets. As someone who took this wonderful trip, I can tell you that there's no need to go to a Nintendo theme park; visit one of the many shops in Akihabara and you can even buy Nintendo history. And for Studio Ghibli fans, there's no need to go to the park (where most of the best attractions are tied to the rare premium ticket, not the basic one). It's chock-full of Ghibli-themed cafes and shops, and you can easily plan a themed tour (I'm not a huge Studio Ghibli fan; I like their films and Heidi, but I'm not crazy about them). But definitely include the Sunigami Animation Museum. Not only is it free to enter, it's super interesting, fun (you can literally make your own cartoon), and packed with information (and nobody know about it). One thing that's definitely a negative about Akihabara is the amount of packinko... they're full of banners advertising anime characters, but they have nothing to do with anime culture. It really bothered me; I hate gambling, and seeing it so much in a place I loved so much didn't sit well with me. I'll be clear: I don't even like gatcha in real life or in mobile games... I'm someone who believes in the concept of one-time, no-surprise purchases. I don't like games full of microtransactions without the option to buy the full game (everything included). And, despite having collected Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh cards in the past, I now hate the card pack system... the rare times I buy them (almost never these days), I only buy individual cards or decks where I already know what I'll get. But I think the spirit of collecting gatcha or cards is still more enjoyable than pure gambling. On the other hand, the ads for overtly sexual massages didn't bother me at all... I almost found them funny. Akihabara, however, is the neighborhood that most reminded me of anime. Despite all its flaws, I still loved it. I'd like to add another point: plan your own trip. Compared to an organized trip with Weroad, which was three days shorter, with hotels without breakfast, with the expensive JR Pass instead of using public transport like we did, with fewer stops (Shirakawa and Nagoya weren't included, and the return to Tokyo wasn't scheduled through Akihabara), Weroad charged about double the price we paid. And that's all... I hope it's interesting to someone. I really enjoyed this trip. I don't think I'll be back anytime soon because it's not an easy trip (long flights and the price isn't negligible), but I'd like to visit Hokkaido someday, and I'm still very happy to have visited the country that has given birth to so many of my favorite anime, manga, and video games. PS. More positives on food In Shirakawa, I ate some excellent milk ice cream and was able to try both sushi and takoyaki, since they were made with Hida beef rather than fish/octopus. In Hiroshima, although it's probably not a traditional local dish, I ate some excellent Gyudon for the first time, which has become one of my all-time favorites. Month 2 Recently one of my friends told me that I downsized "the right way" and asked me to write down how I went about accomplishing that monumental task. So, here we are. This is how we condensed our 3,000 square foot house into 25 boxes of items to move into our new space. My family and I currently live in our dream home. While that statement should be a big-brag, it's actually bitter sweet. In 2024, like so many other families, we realized that we need to move. For the sake of brevity, I'll skip telling the story of exactly why we need to move... but the important parts are: We're currently in an almost 3,000 square foot house, with another 1,700 square feet of garage/storage space AND a garden shed. We're moving to a 1400 square foot apartment with no additional storage space. Also to note, we are moving a 4 hour drive away and we will be selling our house to accomplish this. This post will be broken down by month and the actions we took during that time. One key thing to point out, my partner and I both work from home. This allowed us to work on decluttering during our lunch breaks. I may need to make a separate post to address how we went about helping our child through this process as well. I have a lot of containers full of items, and I want to create a digital inventory of them. Many products exist which bundle special labels with a proprietary app and their own cloud database. But I don't want to be stuck having to use expensive labels, pay subscription fees, or trust someone to keep my data indefinitely. I would really like an app that meets these criteria: Works with any barcode and/or QR codes (I want to buy cheap labels with arbitrary codes) Uses standard/open data formats Saves locally and/or on common cloud storage like google drive Could be a cloud app (could be self-hosted) or native app (need at least an Android version) Under $50 for a perpetual license; no subscription I am thinking of these features: Add an item to inventory Scan a label Capture one or more photos of the container/contents Enter a name and tags. Hey everyone. 8 Months ago, we had a pretty big thread where we tried to figure out the rest mode bug on the PS5 and we made some good progress on nailing down the common problems and some solutions. Because this has been going on for so long, Reddit auto-archived that thread. With many of the firmware updates, we've seen marginal improvements for the rest mode bug for many people (some reported it was fixed entirely) Since Sony has released a major update today (21.02-04.00.00), I'm hoping to hear from all of you on your experience. Does this firmware update fix your rest mode bugs or not? If you've never had the rest mode bug, that's awesome, I'm happy for you, but telling us its never been a problem wont help us figure it out, so, no need to report on that please. :-) If you don't know what the rest mode bug is, basically, you put your PS5 into rest mode, and then at some point, your orange light will go out, and you won't be able to power on with your controller. You have to press the power button on the console, it beeps, but doesn't actually turn on, and then you can use your controller or the power button again to turn the system on. It will complain that you unplugged the PS5 (even though you didn't) and it will often want to do a repair to the storage. - Is this happening to you? Or do you have some other version of this? I'd love to hear the variations... (if there are any). I'd also love to hear if you have the exact same problem. Here is how I've categorized the variations:Types of rest mode bug: USB-A, or "overnight" rest mode bug: Seems to be solved by either not using any of your USB ports, or using the USB-C port specifically. This bug tends to manifest overnight or during an extended period of time while the system is in rest mode (similar to what is described at the beginning of this post) - This alone will not solve the green screen of death. You may have both. Recent firmware updates have solved this bug for most people. Green Screen of death (Suspending games): This is also a rest mode bug, but it usually manifests when you're suspending a game or when you're waking a suspended game. It can usually be avoided by fully closing your game and WAITING for a minute or two before putting your PS5 into rest mode. This is just a crazy hunch of mine that I cannot prove and I don't have any evidence of it so far, but I feel like this green screen is associated with HDR, resolution settings, or even the current temperature of the system. You can see a video of the Green Screen of Death here: https://youtu.be/ClpYnw9xShY WiFi / Network rest mode bug: Seems to be associated with WiFi... possibly even WiFi6 Specifically, or network instability, or automatic DHCP settings perhaps. I don't have this problem, but I also have a straight ethernet connection to my router with no switches or hubs between the two, so maybe ethernet is less likely to have this problem, or I'm just lucky not to have this issue. Several other fringe cases exist, but I'm not seeing a pattern or common thread to them yet. I'll update with more bullets here as we learn more. So, mainly I'm interested in if you're still having rest mod bug problems on the newest firmware 21.02-04.00.00Any info would be awesome. Thank you so much. UPDATE: I did a very deliberate test during my lunch break and can confirm that the Green Screen is still present for me. I did this by running an intensive PS5 game for 15 minutes and then tried to put the system into rest mode. :-( UPDATE 2: Since I'm still getting the green screen of death, I'm going to bite the bullet and send in my console for repairs with Sony. I will keep you all updated on how it goes and if they can in fact solve this issue through this method. Update 3: I've initiated a repair request with Sony, but the weird thing is, I cannot for the life of me get the green screen to happen again. So, current theory is maybe you have to do a full power cycle to get the full benefit of the new firmware, so please try a full power cycle and then see if you can get the rest mode bug to happen. I'm going to keep testing it as much as I can before the Sony coffin arrives and if its as stable as it seems right now, I may cancel the repair request. Update 4: I was able to get another green screen. Seems to be less frequent, but I'm not 100% sure. I'm going to try to capture a video of it so I can show Sony. If anyone else happens to capture a video of it, please let me know. Update 5: I was able to get the green screen again, and this time I recorded a video of it to make it easier for people to understand what it does and what it looks like. I'll update you all once I have it back and can test it some more. Update 7 (10/07/2021): Sony has released firmware Version: 21.02-04.02.00 - Please update your system and let me know if you see improvements to your rest mode problems. I cannot test this one because my system is currently in for repairs with Sony. UPDATE 8 (10-20-2021): Okay, here's the latest in the saga: I sent it into Sony for repairs. I did several things to try to maximize their success. I was very detailed with the phone support person about the problem and what it does and how to best replicate the problem (don't bother with chat support, they can't help) UPDATE: supposedly you can start the repair process online now. I don't know how that works, so you'll have to vet that out yourself. I wrote up a description of the problem and I also included a QR code linking to my YouTube video of the problem on the paper and I taped it to the system when I sent it in. I put a tracking link on that QR code and I can tell you that they never scanned it and never looked at my video. So I thought that would help but it didn't have an impact on anything. I fully backed up my system to an external drive and I made sure there were no discs inside I dropped it off at fed ex, and made sure to get a receipt. Here's how it went: 9/15/2021 - contacted phone support and started the repair request 9/25/2021 - the coffin (shipping box) arrived at my house. I shipped it that same day. 9/30/2021 - the PS5 arrived at the repair center 10/01/2021 - Sony acknowledges that the system has been received 10/08/2021 - Status sits on received and then suddenly jumps to complete. There is a "pending" status that is between the two that it just skipped. On this same day I get an email saying the system has been repaired and its on its way. It has a fed ex tracking number. This tracking number throws an error in the Fed Ex system. Typically I would expect a status of "awaiting package" or something similar to indicate that Sony has created the shipping label but it's not been given to Fed ex yet. I decided to give it a few days... 10/12/2021 - Fed Ex still has no record of this tracking number being valid so I contact sony chat support. They can't figure out what is going on. The repair center says they shipped it, but Fed Ex says it doesn't exist. - The chat support person says that they are putting in an investigation request and that the team that investigates these types of things will begin looking into the Lost system in about 16-17 business days... 10/15/2021 - FedEx suddenly starts showing shipping updates on the original tracking number 10/18/2021 - The "repaired" system arrives at my house. There is a receipt in the box, but there is no indication about what was wrong or what they did to repair it. The system has been wiped, Has the same serial number. ... but the system wont connect to PSN. I get an error message that says "This PS5's services access is permanently or temporarily suspended" I assume that my system got banned when they thought it was lost/stolen. Same day, I reach out to chat support, give them my serial number, they confirm that the system has been banned due to it being reported as stolen. They say it will take 24-48 hours to get the ban removed. 10/19/2021 - system is finally unbanned, I restore from my backup. I've tried rest mode several times since then and so far, I cannot get it to fail. Later that night, I installed a M.2 2Tb internal storage expansion into the slot. I noticed that the repair people actually placed a label type sticker inside of the M.2 slot. It has a date, some numbers, the model number, and bar code on it.. This label is super interesting to me. Its hidden, its date indicates it was printed the day BEFORE my system arrived at the repair center, and I think it could potentially provide some clue as to what they did or didn't do in their "repair" process. If they only just reset the system, I don't think they would open it up and put that sticker in it, so this gives me some hope that they did open it up and actually do something to the internals. I just have no idea and no insight into it. If any of you have had your system repaired, will you please look in your M.2 slot under the cover and send me a picture of the label if its there so I can compare/see if there is anything we can learn from them? Result: so far, no rest mode problems, but I've only had it working a short while. I need more time to test it thoroughly. I'm hopeful that its been fixed though. The repair process was awful and I think my experience isn't typical, but even with all of that hassle, if its actually fixed, I would consider it worth the trouble. Update 9 - 10/22/2021 The system seems to be fixed. I can't get rest mode to fail any more. Time may prove otherwise, but I've put the system in and out of rest mode probably about 20 times trying to test different things. I've tested hopping in and out of different games, I've tested leaving a game running for several hours and slamming it into rest mode with no cool down, I've tried to replicate the green screen method I used in the YouTube video and none of those tests have failed for me.In addition to all of that, I've taken it in and out of rest mode using remote play and that all worked flawlessly too. Interestingly, when initiating remote play using my phone and PS4 to the PS5, both would not connect to my PS5 using the remembered system from before the repair. I had to select the other connections option and select this newly added system which leads me to believe that even though I have the same serial number, they did in fact swap out the motherboard. Between that remote play thing and the sticker I found in the M.2 slot, I feel like they actually opened it up and did something to fix it. Obviously, your mileage may vary. One person in this thread had to send their system in twice to finally get it fixed. Others have sent it in and gotten back a system that is worse, some have no change after sending it in... My system almost got lost... obviously its a bit of a gamble to send it in for repairs, but ultimately, if this truly did fix it, and it seems like it has, it seems like it's the only way to really get rid of the problem. I'll check back in after a few days to confirm no more rest mode bugs are occurring. OR if it happens, I'll post right away, but for now, I'm considering it fixed. Update 10 - 10/25/2021This may be my final update. Another person here mentioned that they were going to record their Mac Address before sending in their PS5 for a repair. This is a great idea because it can give you a clue about if they replace the motherboard or not. That helped me remember that my router stores the Mac Addresses of my devices and I was able to determine that my PS5's mac address did in fact change with the repair even though my serial number remained the same. I think this shows that the motherboard was in fact replaced... Couple that with the fact that I still have not gotten the system to fail rest mode, and I think we've got a pretty good indication that it is fixed for me. (I'll update everyone if that ever changes)So that's my conclusion. If you're having this problem, contact Sony and get a repair scheduled before your warranty runs out. Record your Mac Address before sending it in so you can get a clue about what they did, and then I wish you all the best! It may take a few tries, but it does seem like this is the definitive way to solve the rest mode problems. I want to thank everyone that has contributed in helping me reach this conclusion over the last 9-10 months. I hope this has been helpful to others as well. I wish you all the very best. Update 12 - 4-24-2022 Still no rest mode problems for me. I did want to address one thing really quick. There is a person who is very enthusiastically telling everyone that this problem can be fixed by simply replacing your HDMI cord with another one. In their case, swapping with their Xbox cord seemed to do the trick for them. I can't verify that this works since mine doesn't have the problem any more, but I will say that I'm using the same exact HDMI cord from before the repair was made. That being said, maybe some motherboards are more sensitive to HDMI cord problems and this is a relatively simple fix to attempt, so you might as well try it because starting with the easiest things first is just good troubleshooting logic. With June around the corner, millions of users will lose access to unlimited High Quality Photos storage. If you have an OG Pixel or are willing to spare double-digits dollars, you can easily sync your new phone's captures to your old Pixel for unlimited backup at Original Quality. Below I'll describe how I use Syncthing-Fork to automatically and instantly sync photos with insignificant battery drain. We'll also touch on battery maintenance for the OG Pixel, such as cycling the battery with a smart plug, Tasker, and AutoInput. Installation and Folder Selection Syncthing-Fork is a "Syncthing Wrapper for Android." I originally used the official app but battery drain was consistently high and the connection was not stable. The fork resolved both issues for me. Install Syncthing-Fork on both phones so we can select the relevant folders. Open the app and hit Menu (☰) > Web GUI > + Add Folder > General. Label your folder whatever, e.g. "Camera" Path to the relevant folder, e.g. /storage/emulated/0/DCIM/Camera Go to the Ignore Patterns tab to exclude things. I don't sync thumbnails (high frequency changes) or photos queued for deletion (unimportant) and input *thumbnail* and *trashed* on separate lines in the text box. You may also add paths to subdirectories that should be ignored, such as Messenger. Note the operator guide under the text field. Finally, go to the Advanced tab: Type as "Send Only" so external devices can't modify your new phone's files Pull order "Oldest First" because ??? This is unimportant because syncing occurs so frequently that your pool is only 1-2 items. Save Repeat the above steps for additional folders except do not repeat individual Ignore Patterns because we can do it globally later. Finish adding your folders. Remember that subfolders ARE included. Each sync'd folder will contain .stfolder and other .stremoved* files. Removing these files will break your sync. To fix, simply replace the removed file with one of the same name. Learn more about ignoring files here. I sync the following folders /storage/emulated/0/DCIM/Camera /storage/emulated/0/Movies/ /storage/emulated/0/Pictures/ If you created a folder and specified Ignore patterns, you should have a '.stignore' file in your /storage/emulated/0/DCIM/Camera folder. Copy that to your root direction (e.g. /storage/emulated/0/). Open .stignore with a text editor and it should look like this: **.thumbnails (?d)**thumbnail** **.trashed* **.tmp Right now, it will ignore any files and folders with those terms in their names. Please modify however you want per the linked documentation above. Include directories with respect to the root directory (e.g. !(?d)/Movies/Messages). Syncing to OG Pixel On your new phone, Syncthing-Fork > Menu (☰) > Show device ID. On your OG Pixel, Syncthing-Fork > Devices (tab) > Add Device (top right). Tap the QR code button to scan your new phone. Name it whatever Introducer enabled because your new phone will introduce stuff I think there was an accept all folders options, or maybe it was in the GUI, Idr. Go to Web GUI I kinda ran out of steam for this section so ask in the comments if you have trouble. The GUI is pretty straightforward so you should get the hang of it by now. Battery Health Maintenance Chargie is one option. Kinda pricey, would not recommend. The absolutely best method requires you have a bootloader unlocked OG Pixel so you can install acc by VR25 alongside AccA by MatteCarra. This method will allow you to directly power the device and bypass the battery entirely. If the device loses power, it will revert to battery. Unfortunately my version is from Verizon (but was only $60 mint condition) so I had to use Tasker and AutoInput. Install Tasker/AutoInput, then go through the setup and accessibility and write secure adb stuff. Each app will walk you through how to do it. Create two Tasker profiles with state = power and source = AC, and toggle Invert for one. First profile is Invert and turns on the plug when your battery drops too low. Second profile turns off the plug upon your specified charge level. There's some stuff with AutoInput I'm too lazy to explain at the moment, but here's my tasks (to turn on charger, and to turn it off). Link your profile active when power is on (AC not Inverted) to the task that turns off when the battery hits 70. Link the Invert profile to the one that turns on when the battery hits 30. I can confirm it will automatically turn off at 70%. I will update if it doesn't turn on or there are any update.
