A recipe from the 1930's Jean Harlow's "Stuffed Celery a la Shrimp" is easy to make and lives up to it's old-Hollywood glamour days. Modern palates would like a little added ooomph. What would you add to this vintage hors d'oeuvre?
Jean Harlow's "Stuffed Celery a la Shrimp" - A very easy and simple little appetizer. Please excuse my small celery stalks. This would look and probably taste better with wider stalks, but this is all I had. I boiled the shrimp with some garlic, lemon and Old Bay seasoning. Once cooked, I cooled the shrimp, chopped them finely and put them in a medium mixing bowl. Chopped the celery very finely and then added it and mayo to the shrimp bowl. Added salt & pepper. Mixed to incorporate. I would recommend making this mixture ahead of time and chilling it in the fridge for at least 6 hours or overnight. Then stuff your prepped celery sticks right before serving. The taste is as you would expect. cool, crunchy and good. You get the very simple combination of shrimp and celery flavors and it's a great duo. I think a dash of cayenne pepper or the hot sauce of your choice would bring this to life. What are your thoughts on what you'd add to this dish? This mixture is also good on crackers, or even better endive. Overall, it's a good, old-fashioned little appetizer and if it was good enough for Jean Harlow, it's good enough for me! submitted by /u/ciaolavinia to r/OldCelebrityRecipes [link] [comments]

This is a pasta sauce I throw together all the time. Usually I blend everything together to make it smooth and saute spinach in it at the end, but my brain was fried and I put the spinach in the blender. Whoops lmao. Anyways my boyfriend of 6 years sat sat me down to tell me he had just discovered this BRAND NEW THING called Ethical Non-Monogamy! And then told me about his new girlfriend he was already talking to online. For some reason he *still* "doesn't understand" why he's sleeping at his mother's house now 🫩 Edit: Adding the sauce "recipe" from another comment since people asked lol Its nothing crazy. I'm no master chef lol. Usually just the fat of whatever protein I'm using- today was andouille sausage. Add some butter, chopped onion (usually bell pepper too but I was out today lol) sun dried tomatoes and season with whatever sounds good. I did Tony chachere's because of the sausage. Then I add some milk (I used almond tho) and cheese til melty and combined, then into the ninja so I can pretend I know how to emulsify things. Spinach in the pan til it wilts, plus the blended sauce, and you bring your protein back in to get covered, and then noodles! I also added shrimp because its a chaotic kind of day lmao. Definitely pour out most of your fat and add more milk than I did. It was a greasy comfort food kind of day Oh and his parents are backing me up completely, so its been really nice to have their support. submitted by /u/MissMekia to r/GirlDinnerDiaries [link] [comments]

HELP these broke my cat
My cat has never really liked treats, he avoids all human foods, and literally only eats his cat food. I saw all these videos of cats munching on these and gave it a shot. Two days. One pouch a day. And now my cat is broken. He literally sits outside the cabinet I keep these in and screams all day for them. If I walk by the cabinet he comes running in screaming. I mean HOWLING. I stopped giving them to him about 6 days ago and he still does it. I also served it to him on a paper plate as to not dirty his bowl (he wouldn’t eat it if I held it) and now even paper plates trigger him! Anything even remotely similar to the pouch shape/sound he howls at us for. My husband grabs a chomps meat stick? Howls. Electrolyte packet? Howls. Dude I took a HOTDOG out of the package and he howled. Now I can’t even step foot in the kitchen without him scrambling in and yelling. Any advice? He’s not aggressive at all, just love bombing thinking he’ll get a churu pouch. And yes, I try to redirect with toys or play and he’s uninterested in anything that’s not churu.) (30F with 3M neutered cat, lives in US, we have an established vet/pet insurance/can afford bills, just any advice on this behavioral issue would be nice) 😻UPDATE: wow I didn’t expect this much feedback thanks everyone. So, today I walked to the cabinet to get something, he ran in but didn’t meow for the first time!!! So, I grabbed a pouch and a paper plate and got a few squeaks but nothing major. I moved where he ate the treat into the laundry room instead of feeding it right in front of where I kept the pouches. He devoured it of course because ya know.. crack. Yes, he’s now sitting glaring at me while I eat my girl lunch BUT he’s QUIET👏🏼😅 rewarding good behaviors let’s see how this goes Godspeed submitted by /u/jsnfl to r/CATHELP [link] [comments]

Paella is not that good
Everyones goes mad over paellas. Having been to spain many times, and taken by local friends to “ the best paella restaurant you will try”, and another friend cooking for us his “ ancestors recipe” , it remains the same overrated and hard rice with some badly cooked sea food. Then it takes a long time to take the clams out and open the shrimp to eat, or the crab, the rice actually gets cold. The portions are huge because they want to justify the insane prices. The Best Cajun Shrimp Recipe Youll Love to Make
I wasn’t even planning to cook today, but after a long afternoon of dealing with work emails and a stack of laundry, I realized I needed something quick and delicious for dinner. My family’s been on a shrimp kick lately, and I remembered this recipe for the best cajun shrimp I’ve been wanting to try. It’s one of those dishes that comes together in a flash, and honestly, it really hits that comfort food spot. The homemade cajun butter is what makes this dish sing. If you’re in a rush and love bold flavors, you’ve gotta check this out. Here’s the link to the recipe I followed: https://www.amgroyal.com/the-best-cajun-shrimp ! Here’s what I used: 1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined (450g) ½ tablespoon olive oil 2 tablespoons room temperature butter 1 clove garlic, finely minced or grated 1 tablespoon cilantro or parsley leaves, minced 1 ½ teaspoons homemade cajun seasoning Salt, as needed How it came together was super straightforward. First thing, I rinsed the shrimp with some salt for a minute and then patted them dry. I always find this step helps the shrimp get that nice sear. Next, I made the cajun butter by mixing the room-temperature butter with garlic, cilantro (I had cilantro on hand, so I went with that), and cajun seasoning. Honestly, this is where the magic begins. I heated up the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat, then tossed the shrimp in. I made sure they were all in a single layer, but it’s okay if they overlap a bit. After about a minute, they started turning pink so pretty! Then I lowered the heat and added the cajun butter. I stirred everything together until the shrimp were fully cooked, which took maybe just another minute or two. A couple of tips for you: I used homemade cajun seasoning, and it really made a difference in taste. If you go with store-bought, just keep an eye on the salt levels since they can vary a lot. Also, I almost forgot to add the cilantro before mixing the butter, but thankfully, I caught myself! For leftovers, I found that I could store this in the fridge for a couple of days and just reheat it on low in the skillet when I wanted to dig in again. I’m thinking next time I might pair this with some pasta or even throw it in a taco. That could be a fun twist! How do you all like to prepare shrimp? Any favorite seasoning blends or sides you pair with it? submitted by /u/Weary-Confidence9998 to r/yummyrecipesyum [link] [comments]

Recipe Remix™ - Hot Shrimp Sandwich (1920) on Sandwiches of History
Yes, it’s time for another Recipe Remix wherein I keep the spirit of the original but try to transform it into something much better. Today, we’re going to revisit the Hot Shrimp Sandwich from The Calendar of Beverages and Sandwiches of 1920. While not bad, the original was just kinda meh. But if felt like, given the ingredients, it had potential to be so much more interesting. Recipe is below or on my website if you want to give it a go (lmk what you think if you do!) Snag some Sandwiches of History hoodies, t-shirts, beanies, and more! https://www.sandwichesofhistory.com/merch Recipe Remix™ - Hot Shrimp Sandwich (1920) Remoulade sauce: 2 tsp butter 2 tsp flour 1/2 cup milk 1 tsp dried dill 1/4 tsp onion powder 1/2 tsp fresh lemon zest 1 tsp cayenne pepper (or less if you want it less spicy) 1 1/2 tsp capers roughly chopped (squeezed) 1/4 tsp dry mustard 1 garlic cloves minced finely 3/4 tsp smoked paprika salt and pepper to taste Melt butter, add flour cook slightly. Then add dill, onion powder, lemon zest, cayenne pepper, capers, dry mustard, garlic, and smoked paprika. Whisk in milk and cook until thickened (how thickened is up to you but it will thicken further while cooling) Recipe Remix™ - Hot Shrimp Sandwich Recipe Shrimp burger: 1/2 c raw shrimp roughly chopped salt and white pepper 1 1/2 tb mayo 1/8 tsp salt 1/8 tsp white pepper Wozz approximately 2/3 of the shrimp in a mini prep food processor with mayo, salt, and white pepper. Once a paste, add remaining shrimp and pulse (you want some bigger chunks of shrimp in addition to the paste). Form into a patty and fry in butter, flipping occasionally, until shrimp reaches 145F. Over easy egg: Come on now, do I really need to tell you how to cook the egg? You’ve got this! Build your sandwich! Stamp out two rounds from white sandwich bread, or just use the bread, or a hamburger or other bun. Toast the bread. Spread both pieces of toast with sauce. Place shrimp burger patty on bottom bread. Top with arugula and an over easy (or whichever style you like) egg. Close and enjoy! submitted by /u/SuperHappyFunSlide to r/SandwichesofHistory [link] [comments]

Mood Spoiler: honestly just kind of weird Original Post: November 29, 2025 Parents gave up wanting responsibilities for Thanksgiving meal about five years ago. My house is big enough to host and I enjoy cooking so for the past three years the duties have fallen to me. I make the turkey, the stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy and rolls. Others bring sides and things like chips and drinks. This year, my brother and his wife came into town early and stayed over. Thanksgiving, mid- morning my sister-in-law wanders into the kitchen while I'm making stuffing. She sees my pile of bread crumbs/celery/onion/sausage in a bowl and me sautéing mushrooms. She says, "What are THOSE for?" I told her they were for the stuffing. She put her hands on her hips and said, freaking out, "You can't put mushrooms in the stuffing. I'm allergic!" I was stupefied. I said, "When did this happen?" And she just looked at me like I was an idiot so I said, "When did you discover you're allergic to mushrooms?" She scoffed and said, "I've always been allergic." Now the thing is, when I make my stuffing I like things to be well incorporated, and I always chop the mushrooms small after I sauté them. So they're not actually apparent in the mix as mushrooms among the other ingredients. I burst out in a laugh and said, "Well, that's interesting, because you weren't allergic last year. And you weren't allergic the year before." She asked me what I meant, and I told her I'd been making stuffing like this every year she's eaten it, and furthermore she's raved over it, and had zero allergic reaction. So maybe she's not allergic. Maybe she just thinks she doesn't like mushrooms. She got pissed and went to my brother to tell him, and she told him she wanted to leave, but he wanted to stay. So she spent the entire rest of the day shooting daggers at me with her eyes. They were supposed to stay through the weekend but they left Thanksgiving night. I confided in my mom and my sister yesterday and they kind of chuckled and said it's not my fault, but my brother texted me this morning that I could have just not used the mushrooms, and that I made his wife feel stupid for no reason. I maintain I didn't make her feel anything. AITAH? Some of OOP's Comments: Dry-Novel2523: It's completely possible the stuffing gave her the shits or cramps and she just thought it was from the amount of food. Not all allergic reactions are anaphylaxis shock. OOP: She's never given any indication the food gave her anything but pleasure. No cramps or illnesses. Ready to drink and party the past two years at a friend's game party Thanksgiving night. To another commenter: No reactions that I can tell. She has, for the past few years, gone to game night Thanksgiving night. She feels well enough to drink my brother under the table. No reaction the next day, either. Just more stuffing and gravy leftovers. V-Avesta: NTA. I believe it’s the responsibility of the one with allergies to inform others of their condition. It should have been brought up on the first dinner with her. However, I caution against dismissing her allergy as “fake” without more info. Food allergies don’t always come with immediate reactions. In my case, I get diarrhea the next day after ingesting my allergen. It took me months to discover my allergy due to similar misconception. OOP: We've got a kid in the family with multiple allergies to various nuts. She knows this, and that we are careful about it. I felt like if she was allergic she would have said. OOP adds: She's never claimed any reaction to the stuffing. No mention of it by my brother. No warning about the presumably years-long allergy. EntertheOcean: I also developed allergies in my 20s that I did not have previously. The struggle of trying to get people to believe me was insane. However, NTA as OP didn't know and has been making the same recipe for years without comment OOP: Yeah. It's why I asked her about when it happened. I have a friend who is allergic to shellfish. Went from being able to eat shrimp to full blown throat closing symptoms within about 6 months. OOP adds: I have never tried to trick her. The recipe is my grandmother's. We have been eating it forever. The only thing I do differently is make the vegetables in it fairly uniform. My sister-in-law has eaten it since they were engaged. Pretty sure my brother knows/knew what's in it. SummitJunkie7: NTA. She could just not eat the stuffing. And if she really believes she has an allergy "you ate this last year and the year before, did you have an adverse reaction?" is important medical information, so you were right to tell her. If what she does with that information is feel stupid and throw fits, that's on her. OOP: She doesn't just eat the stuffing, traditionally, she goes in for seconds, and then for a midnight snack covered with gravy. Nightmare_Gerbil: At the very least, green bean casserole will have mushrooms. OOP: It just occurred to me after this and another post. We have that, too. I feel like she eats it. Is it possible she doesn't realize it also has mushrooms? OOP adds one more comment: Non-lethal allergies do exist. But she yelled at me, and said she's always been allergic. She never once before indicated to anyone ion the family she was allergic to mushrooms, and through these posts I've realized she's also been eating the green bean casserole in fairly large quantities, which also has mushrooms. It's like she never ate a Thanksgiving meal before and never bothered to ask what was in the food? If I had an allergy or intolerance I would be asking. And I think it's an over-reach when people say I mocked her. I laughed. Because I was surprised. Update (Same Post): November 30, 2025 (Next Day) UPDATE: First, thanks everyone, even those of you who said I was TAH. You gave me a lot to think about. Just got off the phone with my brother and I’m sitting here with a beer, truly at a loss for words but here goes: He admitted that my SIL, who has been eating my stuffing (and my sister’s green bean casserole, this has been verified) for a few Thanksgivings now did not know there were mushrooms in either. Neither has she ever told ANYONE- not my brother, (her husband) not my mother, sister, me, of any allergies before now, because she doesn’t have any. Apparently, and I’m still trying to wrap my head around this, she has, like, a phobia, I guess you would call it?Maybe that's not the right word- but, after watching a TikTok video about some edible mushrooms growing on dead skin on feet, or in human bodies, she believes she can be infected by eating them. He tried assuring her it wouldn’t happen, but she cited other videos she’s watched about spores, etc. including the show The Last of Us, which he explained is fiction created from a video game, but she swears it is based on fact and still possible. I feel like we have bigger problems here than stuffing. I have encouraged him to try to get her to see a doctor to talk about this. One of OOP's Comments: To a longer comment: Phobias are real. She's very resistant to seeking therapy. submitted by /u/LucyAriaRose to r/BestofRedditorUpdates [link] [comments]

Stinky food
Sunday morning I cooked chicken fried rice... The ingredients were garlic, onion, sambal, egg, chicken and kecap manis and then left over rice.. The next morning it was egg fried rice ( we love fried rice 🥺) and spam less sodium 😵‍💫 .. egg, garlic, left over fried rice, and soy sauce.. If these are stinky for them... what else can I cook? I have never cooked food with strong smell since moving in here. (Shrimp paste or dried fish, which I believe would really smell, NEVER)😔 will be sending an email to the management today and see what happens.. Edit: Thank you so much for all the kind and supportive comments 💙 it really means a lot. Just to share a bit more context. Mypartner and I both work night shifts We get up at 11:30 pm every night for our 12 am cleaning job, come back at 5 am, and need to fuel up for our café job at 6:30 am. We’re a Filipino couple living here in Gold Coast,Aus and I’m really used to having a heavier breakfast. The unit we live in doesn't have a range hood. From our experience, you can smell cooking in the hallways from everyone, but once inside our own unit we don’t smell it anymore (maybe because I have air fresheners everywhere too) we thought it was the same for them. We also never hear noise from other units. If only I had known, I swear I would have considered them. I plan to mention this to our manager today since he’s nice and approachable. Someone also suggested a portable air hood.. I didn’t know those existed, but I already checked it out and bought one right away to help. I love cooking (I also work as a cook in a breakfast café!) and I’d really love to keep making good food without disturbing anyone. Thanks again for all the support and suggestions 💙 Update: The property manager actually called us and told me she knows who wrote that letter. It's the neighbor right beside us. Apparently, she’s been leaving letters on people’s doors and even in the lift. She’s the only one who has complained, and the building managers themselves don’t like what she’s doing either. They even sent the latest letter (posted in the lift just this morning) to our property manager. The property manager told me to just keep cooking, and if I get another letter, to let her know because that would count as harassment. I’ve also been reading all your comments and suggestions. I understand people have different preferences and sensitivities. What smells normal to one person may not be to another. The only thing we can really control is ourselves and how we react. Even knowing this neighbor’s behavior, I’m still going ahead with the portable air hood I ordered from Amazon, and I’ll also be getting an air purifier (something I’ve been planning to buy anyway, now with an extra reason haha). It also made me think.. this was the first time I actually cooked with sambal (I usually just add it after cooking), so maybe its strong flavor was what really set her off. Or maybe it was the garlic… I don’t want to invalidate her feelings. I acknowledge that maybe I slipped in judgment when I used sambal this time. She mentioned that I have been cooking stinky food for months. I usually cook a mix of Asian and Western dishes and love trying new recipes. Since I also work in a café kitchen, I’ve been cooking eggs and bacon for years. Honestly, even the food some people call "stinky" in the comments, I don’t find stinky at all! I actually love kimchi and curry 🫣 I’ll be honest, I’m an emotional person and I always worry about what others think. Since receiving that letter, I’ve been anxious, constantly checking the door, peeking through the peephole before leaving, just to avoid bumping into anyone. But reading so many kind and heartwarming comments from you all has really helped me feel so much better. Thank you so much! 💛 I honestly wish you all a lifetime filled with delicious meals! 🍳🥘 submitted by /u/Darnuh to r/Apartmentliving [link] [comments]

How do you REALLY make shrimp cocktail? The shrimp cocktail at restaurants has a perfect texture that I have not been able to recreate by following recipes. At a restaurant it’s soft and bouncy without being undercooked. When I make it, it’s just cold shrimp.
Edit: you guys have turned this post into a beautiful Shrimplopedia and I love all of you. Even the one who’s out here microwaving his shrimp. My love for you is a little different, it’s rooted in pity, but love is love. submitted by /u/Venusdeathtrap99 to r/Cooking [link] [comments]

AITB for breaking up with my ex over a shellfish allergy?
I started dating this girl about a month ago. We went to dinner a few times to some big restaurants. I found out she loves her seafood. I'm allergic to shell fish like highly allergic but I didn't want to steal her joy so she got her seafood and I would eat some steak or like a burger. She has asked me if I wanted a bite before and I have told her no I'm allergic. A few weeks went by since our last dinner date bc I got hit with the spring flu. I was sick for weeks. Last week she called and asked if I was okay and would want to stop over for dinner to try her famous chicken Alfredo. I was just starting to feel better so I agreed to go. I have eaten chicken Alfredo many times and haven't had an issue so I never thought twice about it so when I took a few bites of it I noticed it tasted funny then a few minutes later I could feel my throat closing up. I asked her what she put in it and I found out she used shrimp oil in her Alfredo sauce recipe. When she saw me struggling for air she then realized she forgot I was allergic to shrimp... I went into anyphlectic shock. She did help me she called 911 and everything and we went to the hospital. I ended up being ok after a few injections and a few days in the hospital for observation. But I no longer felt comfortable seeing her so I broke up with her. She's now crying to her family bc she felt bad and now her brother is coming at me bc "it was an accident" and now everyone in her family is ganging up on me bc I should have reminded her. submitted by /u/Luckyduck546 to r/AmItheButtface [link] [comments]

Give me your best shrimp dishes!
My husband thought he was allergic to all seafood but it turns out shrimp are safe! We have been eating a lot of shrimp tacos, scampi, and kung Pao shrimp. Give us some other recipes to try using shrimp! We are not picky and love to try new things. ETA: thank you all! I did not expect so many responses - we are going to be trying so many new things! submitted by /u/peachsims to r/Cooking [link] [comments]

Favorite shrimp recipe?
I have some frozen shrimp I would like to incorporate in a main dish. What's your favorite ways to prepare shrimp? Besides shrimp scampi and just stir frying it - I am seeing if there's any other creative but simple ways to turn shrimp into a delicious meal! submitted by /u/pinkpencilbox to r/Cooking [link] [comments]
