PSA: Don’t buy a castle. Learn from my mistake.
TL;DR: couldn’t even win a bidding war on a 28m² studio because the housing market is completely cursed, so I somehow ended up buying a medieval castle instead. Turns out, heating 14 stone chambers costs the GDP of a small nation, and I spend half my life walking to the west wing just to charge my phone. Save yourself. Thought I’d share a cautionary tale for anyone currently doomscrolling Funda while slowly losing their sanity. For context, I always dreamed of a tiny studio. You know, cosy little city goblin vibes. One room, maybe a small balcony, enough space for a couch, desk, and air fryer. But last year, thanks to the absolutely deranged property market, every 30m² shoebox in Amsterdam had 2000 viewings and bids from tech couples offering their unborn child over asking price. Meanwhile, this enormous 13th-century castle had been sitting on the market untouched because apparently people “don’t want to maintain a moat anymore.” So I thought: screw it. I’ll become a feudal lord. I was also dating someone at the time, and we thought it might be romantic. You know, “plenty of room to grow into.” Maybe host dinners. Maybe have a library. Maybe casually own a drawbridge. Boy, was I wrong. In reality, I occupy approximately 0.7% of the castle. I basically live in one heated corner of the eastern tower where my desk, TV, and emotional support blanket are. The rest of the place feels deeply unsettling. Nothing prepares you for eating microwave lasagna alone beneath a 9-metre cathedral ceiling while cold wind whistles through ancient stone corridors. Before moving in, I had all these grand ideas. Music room. Home gym. Art studio. Game room. Observatory. In practice, I use none of it. Turns out when you live in a castle, simply locating your socks already feels like an expedition. And the upkeep? Absolutely biblical. You can’t just “ignore” unused rooms because medieval buildings apparently react to moisture like Victorian children react to tuberculosis. If you don’t heat the place properly, you get damp, mould, ghosts, or possibly all three. The heating bills arrive rolled up like royal decrees. Every repair requires either a specialist craftsman or a man named Gregor who only communicates via raven. Also, nobody talks about the walking. Every task is now a pilgrimage. Want a snack? Better budget 14 minutes to reach the kitchen wing. Forgot your charger upstairs? Congratulations, you’ve completed today’s cardio. Half my day is spent hauling cups of tea through endless spiral staircases trying not to die like a disgraced 15th-century nobleman. Honestly, a tiny one-floor studio now sounds like absolute paradise. Give me 28m². Give me questionable ventilation. Give me a neighbour I can hear sneezing through the wall. At least I wouldn’t need a floor plan and a torch to find the bathroom. Look, if you have a family, servants, dragons, whatever, maybe a castle makes sense. But alone? Complete overkill. I genuinely think most people only need enough space to fully extend themselves horizontally once. Anyway, hopefully this saves someone from making the same mistake. Anyone else accidentally become landed gentry because they got outbid on a studio apartment? submitted by /u/dullestfranchise to r/Netherlands [link] [comments]

Small bathroom refresh/update
Got inspired to change the hardware on the cabinets after hating this bathroom for years and then said wait a minute why couldn't I just update everything... Changed: hardware, faucet, mirror, light, curtains (I know, the floor length ones were gross!). Ideas for a different paint colour are welcome it's just not something I can change right now :) Other feedback is welcome as well. The picture above the toilet looks bigger in real life it's just tiny in photos. Edit: Thank you all for the suggestions even if some of you preferred the before haha. To answer the most commented things: - The curtain rod is actually a dark bronze. It just shows up silver in photos for some reason. I may spray paint it to match the faucet & light. - The faucet and light are champagne bronze. Not sure if that matters to the yellow gold haters. - I chose not to put up roman shades because the window faces a deck and I wanted the privacy but also wanted to let light through. - I know it's not a big change just a ✨refresh✨ so I don't hate my bathroom haha. A new paint colour to make it look a little more different will hopefully come in the future when I have more time. submitted by /u/Quill_ to r/HomeDecorating [link] [comments]

We want to modernize this small bathroom.. renter friendly ideas?
So we are newly renting this 2 bedroom apartment. We're allowed to do some minor editing but will have to restore to how it was before (tiling on walls and floors) when we leave in the future. We are adding a white toilet cabinet underneath the sink with a drawer and door (30x30x80cm), adding a mirror (2nd image) with gold trim above that. And will change the paper rolls to something on the wall to the left. But other than that, I have no clue. What would you do with this space? I'm leaning towards a romantic/japandi/modern twist, but also don't want to spend too much money on this. submitted by /u/IcyOrganization2880 to r/homeimprovementideas [link] [comments]

Two strays showed up with same tail injury(?)
UPDATE: Took Tuxedo to the vet to get his tail looked at. Vet couldn’t say for sure but said it didn’t look like this was abuse. Still have my reservations but hoping that is the case instead of the alternative. They shaved the area, cleaned it and gave him antibiotics. Now that area is more visible I can see three separate small wounds. He is not neutered, so we made an appointment with our regular clinic for that and were able to get in tomorrow. He’s a little nervous but doing well in the bathroom. Finally starting to feel comfortable enough to eat and is actually coming up to me for pets. Very sweet little boy. I’ll add some photos in the thread. Thanks again to everyone! —— Adult in California, vet is accessible if needed. Lots of strays in the neighborhood so we leave dry food out for them and will feed wet food to the regulars. Recently two new strays had started showing up separately. The smaller tabby had nipples showing so we figured she was pregnant but her tail had an indentation in the middle as if someone had tied a rubber band around it. Perhaps it was a previous injury. She is quite skittish so cannot get too close. The second newcomer is the grey tuxedo. After coming around for a few weeks, today we noticed he showed up with the same thing. He is very food motivated so I was able to touch it briefly. Missing fur. Not bleeding, felt kind of sticky. Didn’t seemed like it hurt him when I touched it. Does anyone have any insight as to what this might be? We are worried someone could be purposely hurting these cats. Thank you. EDIT: Adding a little more info. The tabby showed up about two weeks ago, with her tail like that. The tuxedo started showing up about a month ago here and there and as of the last few weeks he’s been here daily to get wet food. Tonight is when he showed up with his tail like that. That is when it seemed too weird to be coincidence. We think the tuxedo lives up the block somewhere. We know the tabby lives across the street. Since we’ve moved here, that neighbor has had lots of strays living there who come over to our backyard. No idea what the situation is over there but we have TNRd as many as we can and found homes for the some of ones who aren’t too feral. It’s just hard to believe that, while they’re irresponsible for allowing those cats to keep reproducing, they would now start hurting them. But we are now probably going to go and talk to them. Plan is to try to get the tuxedo (tabby seems quite feral) into a carrier or trap and have a vet look at him this week, if we can get him. Hope that is possible so we can get more information. submitted by /u/yungcampari to r/CATHELP [link] [comments]

Ideas for a see-through bathroom door?
This is the door to a small en-suite half bathroom. The previous homeowner covered the glass with this stick-on stuff that looks cheap and does nothing to actually obscure the view to the toilet. (Why...???) I want to replace the stick-on with something else. Do I have options other than installing a shade/curtain? submitted by /u/Time-Orchid82 to r/interiordecorating [link] [comments]

Terrazzo tiles in small bathroom?
We're planning a remodel of a very small bathroom (we're talking out a total of 3.2 m2 here). The idea is to keep it relatively neutral and modern since we're not planning to live there forever (so we want to consider resale attractiveness) but we also want to feel at home while we live there. I've asked AI for a rendering incorporating the style I had in mind. We've settled on beige medium sized tiles for the walls, but are still uncertain about the floor. I've kind of fallen in love with these terrazzo style tiles and think they give it a bit of personality while still being neutral enough. The alternative would likely be beige/same as walls or medium grey. What's reddits opinion? Is this going to look terribly dated in 10 years? Any other suggestions (except wood-patterned tiles -just not a fan, personally)? submitted by /u/Informal_Treat_4953 to r/interiordecorating [link] [comments]

Storage solutions for small bathroom
Where do you think I could add some storage in this bathroom? And at least good places for hooks for towels and toiletries? This is our second bathroom that guests use. The mirror is not a medicine cabinet, and I’m not really interested in making it one unless there’s a way without cutting into the wall. submitted by /u/Dogsandcrafts4lyfe to r/HomeDecorating [link] [comments]

A flight with a layover is almost always better than a direct flight, even if it's longer
A flight with a layover is almost always better than a direct flight, even if it makes your trip longer by a couple of hours. With a direct flight you could be sitting for an extremely long period of time and if you want to get up you need to ask your neighbors to move if you aren't on the aisle. With a layover you are required to get up at least once during the trip and have an opportunity to stretch and walk around a bit. Airplane bathrooms have gotten so small that they seem unsanitary to use. Even as a thin person I can barely use one without touching the walls, so I have no idea how overweight people manage. The sinks are also so dinky that you almost always touch the basin while trying to wash your hands and then have to touch the trash bin to discard your paper towels. Due to their size and the frequent use of each airplane I doubt the bathrooms get cleaned/disinfected as much as they should and the number of times I've seen flight attendants headed to the bathroom with a "hazardous material" bag is concerning. With a layover you can use the airport bathroom which is much more spacious and I often see airport staff cleaning them. Food on a plane is extremely expensive and limited. If you are seated towards the back your preferred option or most options could run out before they even get to you. With a layover you have many more options for meals/snacks and different price points to choose from. Food in an airport is still expensive but not as expensive as on a plane. The only disadvantage with a layover is if your first flight gets delayed/cancelled your whole travel plans could get messed up. submitted by /u/Apprehensive-Willow5 to r/unpopularopinion [link] [comments]

Small/narrow bathroom redesign – foresty green tiles: good idea or mistake?
Hi! Would love any and all advice. I've attached photos of our current bathroom, the AI generated image of what we want and some close ups of sample tiles in the bathroom with different lighting (it's quite gloomy atm). FYI for the generated image, the shower would actually be on the stud wall, along with the shower screen, and we intend to have the green tiles to the floor in the sink area with no recessed lighting above the sink. Dark green tiles: We’re considering foresty green wall tiles. In a bathroom of this size, would that likely feel too dark/heavy in real life, even with lighter floor tiles and good lighting? (The AI generated image using tiles we're considering makes it look fine, but suspect they could be darker in real life?). We really like the gloss/ceramic glaze tiles where there is a range of colour/texture in tiles. Boxing in the toilet cistern: Would boxing the cistern in (to seat height, spanning bath-to-wall) make the space look cleaner and more modern, or risk making it feel smaller? We currently just have the pipes boxed in. Struggling to visualise... Vanity: Any recommendations for what price point makes sense for vanity units? We've seen some at the 1k mark, some significantly lower (e.g. from Victorian Plumbing) and not sure what makes sense - we'll probably live here for max 5 more years. Background: Full bathroom replacement: bath, shower, toilet, vanity/sink, tiles. Stud wall position is fixed due to bath size, window, and cost constraints - will be extended to the ceiling Layout advice isn’t the main goal, but open to obvious improvements. TL;DR: Redesigning our bathroom and want feedback on whether green tiles will be too dark for the space, and whether boxing in the toilet cistern actually improves the look. Vanity suggestions welcome. Editing to add: Wow, really appreciate all the feedback! Thanks so much to everyone who commented so far. For those who are asking, we used ChatGPT (free version) to generate the image. It was definitely "generous" with the size and lighting. We actually asked it to use the same tiles we got samples for, but I guess it came out unrealistically light! submitted by /u/SaltedandShrivelled to r/InteriorDesign [link] [comments]

Small bathroom renovation
Hi experienced Aus renoers, just wanting some opinions on a small bathroom Reno we are going to be starting soon, this is the layout we have proposed so far but wanting to throw it out there for you people to find some flaws we haven’t thought about The measurements of the room are 2.75m x 1.85m with standard 2.5m ceilings The main things we are trying to preserve is a separate shower and bath with some good clearance around the toilet with us currently having 800mm for the toilet space The alternative is a shower bath but we are pretty hesitant about that (Also what are people’s thoughts on external laundry’s, currently have a laundry with a WC outside that we are opting to renovate instead of trying to squeeze into either the kitchen or bathroom due to it being a pretty small workers cottage) EDIT Thank you everyone for all of your comments and suggestions! we have taken quite a few ideas from this and very appreciative! submitted by /u/Purple_Scallion7646 to r/AusRenovation [link] [comments]

Just learned my house has a feature I didn’t even know existed after living here for two years
I’ve been in this house long enough that I thought I knew every weird corner and quirk it had. The sticking door. The loud vent in the bathroom. The mystery switch that still does nothing. I figured the surprises were over. Apparently not. Yesterday I was cleaning behind the built ins in the living room and found a tiny panel almost flush with the wall. I thought it was just a cheap patch someone painted over. A few hours later, while I was playing on rollingriches, watching a video about hidden storage ideas, it reminded me to pry it open just out of curiosity. Inside was a small, completely unused cubby clean, dry, insulated, and clearly intentional big enough to store tools, emergency supplies, whatever. It even had an oldschool hook mounted inside like someone used it decades ago. I’ve walked past this wall a thousand times and had no idea. Now I’m wondering what else I’ve missed. This house was built in the 60s, so who knows how many odd little features are hiding behind trim or paneling. It makes me want to go full detective mode. Anyone else discover something unusual or unexpectedly useful in their house long after moving in? submitted by /u/CourteousPasta to r/homeowners [link] [comments]

I’m a frogger living in someone else’s apartment right now. Ask me anything.
(Upd: YES, I USE AI FOR ACCURATE TRANSLATION, STOP BRINGING IT UP. ENGLISH IS MY THIRD LANGUAGE, AND I RUN MY TEXT THROUGH AI FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE) I’m a 20-year-old woman, and for the past few months I’ve been living as a phrogger in an apartment inside a historic building in Saint Petersburg, Russia. I found out about the place while working on a student report about old residential buildings with my classmate (let’s call her Anya). Anya lived in one of those big old apartments—basically a Soviet-era communal flat. It’s a huge apartment split into separate rooms rented by unrelated people, all sharing the same kitchen and bathroom. Everyone has their own room key, plus keys to the building and the main apartment door. While we were filming, Anya mentioned that people in her flat almost never lock their room doors, and the main door is often left open because tenants go into the stairwell to smoke. I remember thinking: Anyone who gets inside the building could just walk into this place. Kind of shocking, because in Russia everyone usually locks everything all the time. She also told me there were two locked storerooms inside the apartment that nobody had entered for years. Apparently, they belong to the state. Both doors were secured with a simple padlock held in place by a few screws—screws you could remove with a basic screwdriver. I was curious, because in old Saint Petersburg buildings, abandoned rooms sometimes hide interesting antiques. I forgot about that place until I dropped out of university. I lost my dorm room, and I couldn’t find an affordable apartment anywhere near my job. After wasting a month’s salary on a tiny overpriced room in another communal flat, I suddenly remembered Anya’s building. And then I had a ridiculous but tempting idea. I grabbed a small bag, a screwdriver, and went there to see if I’d be lucky—or kicked out immediately. I arrived around 3 PM, when most residents should be at work. I waited by the entrance and slipped in when someone walked out. The apartment was, unsurprisingly, unlocked. I stepped in, ready to tell anyone who saw me that I was visiting Anya. But the shared areas were empty. So I pulled out the screwdriver and started removing the screws from one of the padlocks. My hands were shaking, but no one showed up, and eventually the lock gave way. Inside was… just a plain empty storage room. Not a hidden apartment, not a secret chamber filled with antiques. Just four steps wide, six steps long. A dusty bike. An old sewing machine in a wooden case. No window. A small ventilation hole and two electrical outlets—only one of which worked. Bare concrete walls and floor. I decided to see how long I could stay there. The first night felt like an adventure. It got very cold fast, so I ended up spending the night locked in the shared bathroom. After that I went back to the storage room. When the tenants left for work, I tried checking the unlocked bedrooms. I knocked first, and if no one answered, I peeked inside. That same day, I snagged a spare set of three keys from one of the rooms and went back to my rented place. I ordered a sleeping bag, a cheap heater, and a water filter online. The next time I returned to the storage room, it already felt weirdly like home. Turns out Anya had moved out long ago. There are six rooms in the flat, and only three are occupied now: one by a mom and her kid, one by two young women, and one by an old lady who constantly goes out to smoke in the stairwell. I attached a thin wire to the padlock outside so I can pull it back into place from inside and make it look untouched. The storage room is right by the entrance, and nobody pays attention to it, so no one has noticed me. I put a small mattress under my sleeping bag. I fill my water filter from the shared kitchen tap. I enter the empty bedrooms to charge my phone and power bank or use someone’s printer. I shower in the shared bathroom. The heater does a decent job in the tiny room, though I’m still scared that the one working outlet will burn out, leaving me freezing in winter. Every day, I work, eat at a nearby canteen, walk around, talk to people. Then at night I come back to my storage room. I live a pretty normal life—and I don’t pay insane rent. After six months, it honestly feels like this is exactly how things are supposed to be. Upd: OMG, such a huge amount of feedback… I expected people either wouldn’t believe me or would judge me for using AI, and that the post would just get buried. I think I’ve already answered a lot of questions, and they’re starting to repeat. I’ve responded to pretty much everything related to my situation. Honestly, I’ve only used Reddit twice and I’m not an active user, so constantly checking the comments is really draining for me emotionally. And being this open about my situation has been a serious test for my conscience. Please don’t get angry if I ignore your question — I’ve most likely already answered something similar. I’m going to step offline for a while. I’ll check back when I feel ready. My heartfelt thanks to the people who wrote supportive words. I don’t really deserve it, but know this: you’re wonderful people, and your capacity for empathy is a real virtue. submitted by /u/Commercial_Flight912 to r/confession [link] [comments]

My (20f) friend (31f) got pregnant while homeless yet is excited. What can I do? Is it child abuse?
Here is the context between my friend and her boyfriend before I give the details to my question: She can not take care of her current kids. Even when she lived in my city. They always ran out of food to the point where she would sometimes not eat, even at work. In which it is a physically draining job. I don't know how she would manage that. We are both less than 5 feet tall and I had to eat a second lunch after I started working there. I did my best to help her with food. I offered her half the food I got from the foodbank one day and she said 'We don't eat vegtables ' like hello?? Your kids are 2 and 8 years old. Her felon boyfriend is horrible. He spends so much money on different types of guns and electronics despite them starving. She was talking about upgrading her internet. I tried to talk her out of it and she got defensive and said "We are gamers, so you wouldn't know anything about it." And that was the end of the conversation. Oh yes, and he has a super expensive customizable car. I don't know anything about cars but apparently it is a sports car. She can't even drive it due to the height! And he refuses to sell it. And she doesn't want him to sell it either. He stays at home with the kids but could barely give a shit. His step kid (the 8 yr old), is autistic and pees himself when playing on his switch instead of pausing and going to bathroom. My friend told me she hides the switch as punishment for the whole day but that when she gets home, she finds the kid in his own urine while playing on the device. Meaning her boyfriend gave it to him when she left for work. She told me he can't get a job due to his felon status, but he has a small buisness and does doordash (in which she accompanies him...after the 10 hr shift!!!) When I supported the small buisness (literally dropshipping but whatever), I bought around 50 dollars worth. I never recieved it. They order it after the customer places an order. She got defensive and blamed me. And weeks later she admitted it was their mistake. No refund no replacement. Whatever. Also- they are ALWAYS fighting. Sometimes I randomly recieve calls from her and I answer. It's her and her boyfriend screaming at each other. And she does not acknowledge me. Then hangs up after about 2 minutes. Over a year ago, a co worker offered her a place to stay (with the two kids) but my friend refused for a reason I don't remember. The issue: For some freaking reason, she decided to move about 5 hours away with her boyfriend and kids because of cheaper rent. Before she even moved, she told me they didn't have an apartment secured but that they'd spend two weeks in a tent to save money for an apartment. I obviously knew it was a crap idea, especially with a 2 and 8 year old, but I can't do anything to stop her. Eventually we kind of stopped texting after she moved away. A few weeks ago, we sort of reconnected and she sent me a positive pregnancy text and after, the background was still the same tent. Same area. Girl, what have you been doing the last few months?? The kids are not even enrolled in school. This has got to be some sort of child abuse or neglect. At this point, I don't feel sorry for her anymore. But her kids deserve better. Is there anything I can do? This is definitely child abuse or at least neglect. Or should I just mind my business. I don't know what subreddit to post this in. So please redirect me if this is the wrong one. submitted by /u/EllieDidNothingWrong to r/whatdoIdo [link] [comments]

Help. Small bathroom door needs solution.
We have a small toilet room in the primary bathroom and need a door solution. Can’t use a standard door as it will collide with the bathroom door. Opening is 27” wide. Not enough wall space for pocket door. Ideally we leave it open unless someone is using the toilet. Any ideas welcome. Thanks! submitted by /u/RestfulR to r/Remodel [link] [comments]

Small bathroom ideas
Pretty squishy bathroom. Seperate toilet next to it. My thoughts are to pull the bath out, swap shower and vanity locations. Single pane glass screen (walk in walk out) and simple floating vanity where the shower currently is. Tile the whole thing. Any other thoughts without tearing any walls? That’s a separate idea path. It’s a small space for sure, would appreciate any suggestions Cheers submitted by /u/bitchwheresmybunny to r/AusRenovation [link] [comments]

AITAH for loudly confronting my co-worker in front of everyone when she wrongfully believed I had groomed my wife?
I am 30 years old and male. My wife, Jessica, is 22. My wife has a seven-year-old son, Max, whom she had when she was 15 years old. The father, who was her boyfriend in junior high school (and is the same age as Jessica), actually left the state when he and his family learned that she was pregnant. Jessica has no idea where he is, and since her family is well-off, she didn't really need or care for his support. I met Jessica when she was 20, we dated for a year, and then got married when she was 21. I love Max and raise him as if he was my own son. Last month, Max came to my workplace with Jessica in the early afternoon to surprise me with a lunch outing. As they waited for me to finish up a meeting, the front desk secretary, Claire, chatted with Jessica. I wasn't there for the conversation, but Claire was stunned at how young Jessica looked, and Jessica said she was 22. Apparently Claire did a bit of napkin math and came to the following conclusions: (1) Jessica is 22 and I am 30, (2) Max is seven, (3) that means Jessica and I had Max when she was 15 and I was 23. Apparently, from that day on, Claire began gossiping about this. I had no idea what was going on, but I did notice that Claire abruptly changed her attitude towards me, glaring when she thought I wasn't looking or rolling her eyes when I talked to other people. Well, today at work, when I was in the bathroom washing my hands, I overheard Claire gossiping with a new hire about my "underaged wife" outside the door by the water cooler. I left the bathroom and then walked up behind Claire. She turned around and looked like a deer in the headlights at me, and so I announced (loudly), "Hi Claire. You see, I'm not Max's biological father. In all of your gossping to other people, you forgot to consider the most obvious possibility, which was that I am his stepfather. I will, by the way, be reporting you to HR for this." I headed directly to HR and explicitly told them what Claire had said, and the manager (a fellow gossip friend of Claire's) asked if I really wanted to escalate over something so small. I said yes. She then told me Claire is a single mother and relies on this job, and that I shouldn't have embarrassed her in front of the office like that. I insisted on filing a report. After calming down a bit, I feel kind of bad about what I did. Claire cried at her desk and left early. Was I an asshole to approach the issue that way? submitted by /u/Longjumping-Pass-458 to r/AITAH [link] [comments]
