Captain Jon Jackson of Spirit Airlines was supposed to take his final retirement flight today. After Spirit's shutdown, he instead was a passenger on a Southwest flight into Baltimore. There, Capt. Jackson was given the traditional water cannon salute and a surprise welcome party at the gate.
From Southwest's instagram: "Today was supposed to be Capt. Jon Jackson’s retirement flight with Spirit Airlines. After the airline’s sudden shutdown, he found himself heading home as a passenger, seated in the back of a Southwest flight with his son, Chris, a Southwest First Officer.Chris casually mentioned to the flight’s Pilots that this would have been his dad’s retirement flight. They seized the opportunity to change the course of the day for Capt. Jackson. They alerted Dylan, a Southwest Dispatcher, setting into motion a plan that resulted in a proper retirement party when the flight landed in Baltimore. The Baltimore Airport Fire & Rescue met the aircraft with a traditional water cannon salute, and the Baltimore Ground Operations Team was waiting at the gate to welcome him with cheers and bottle of bubbly. It was a powerful reminder of the aviation community’s ability to show respect, compassion, and solidarity when it matters most. Above all, this moment was about honoring a fellow aviator. Congratulations, and thank you for your service in the skies, Capt. Jackson." submitted by /u/TimeThief2123 to r/aviation [link] [comments]

What's the point of Southwest anymore?
I, and many like me, used to fly Southwest because of different levels of mental ease like checking bags in for free, not having to deal with seat selections and having an easy boarding process, and the all around ease when traveling with kids and life being unpredictable. Also, if I ever needed to cancel a flight, I could at no expense. But now... Checked bags fly free and seat selection is activated if you either pay for those things or you have a Southwest credit card, stuff like that. I don't have their card and I definitely don't want it at this point. The worst part is that I had booked flights and later got sick and couldn't travel (unless the people around me wouldn't mind someone coughing into their elbow constantly with a raspy voice that's hard to understand especially with a mask). I went online to cancel my tickets expecting them to refund them to flight credits that I can use whenever in the future. Well, sure I got flight credits but they have expiration dates! I thought well at least I can transfer the credits to someone else and they can pay me back. Oh my God. Horrible thought. Some flights, because I think if they're "basic" purchases then they're not transferrable. But thanks to Reddit (yay!) I figured out how to buy another flight with those credits at a higher ranking than "basic" and then cancel THAT flight and they come through as transferrable credits. My sibling was buying tickets for our whole family so I had this genius idea to transfer my flight credits to them. WRONG MOVE. They could only use the flight credits on THEIR ticket but no one else's - what the heck is the point?????? And THEN they tried to transfer one of them back to me but it wouldn't allow them to! It had a message that this credit can only be transferred once. Now I don't have my credits and they're stuck with credits they can't even use. It really didn't need to be this complicated. I would have expected this nonsense from any other airline, never Southwest. I see no benefit in flying Southwest anymore. I'll just go to Kayak and pick whatever airline is even a little bit cheaper. IF there is anything in this post that's like "hey idiot you made life hard on yourself, you just need to click on X or call someone for Y etc" I'd be happy to hear about it. EDIT TO ADD: It wouldn't let us select seats (for free since we have a Southwest credit card) so we left it as is and now have to hope there'll be space for us to sit with the kids, who outnumber us as it is! submitted by /u/finally_made_acct to r/SouthwestAirlines [link] [comments]

To the “just pay to selected your seat” crowd
To the folks that keep responding to people that have concerns with the new seating policies by telling people to just pay for seat selection: Yes. That would solve many of the concerns being raised, but it also amounts to a huge price increase over what we have appreciated and lived about Southwest as a discount airline. If the cheapest tier represents the baseline of pricing was, then to select a seat is essentially a 30% plus price increase. To select an extra leg room seat is akin to a 50% to 100% price increase. What would we be telling people to do if a restaurant all of a sudden increased prices by 30% based on a policy change? We’d likely tell them not eat somewhere else, which it sounds like people are doing. I was one of the people who was excited about solving some of the minor inconveniences of open seating, but I had hoped the fees for seat selection would be more nominal as an upgrade. On a flight from SAN to BOI seat selection on a RT ticket, on a plane that was largely empty 3-weeks out was over $100. I too have points to burn but we are looking at other airline loyalty programs to see if there might be a better fit for us. Alaska is looking promising. submitted by /u/rowman25 to r/SouthwestAirlines [link] [comments]

[WFAA] Southwest Airlines deflects bag policy backlash to Dallas Mavericks: 'It's not like we traded Luka...'
The post referencing the Luka Doncic trade came after the airline had received backlash for its decision to change its longstanding policy of "bags fly free." DALLAS — Dallas-based Southwest Airlines deflected some backlash and threw some shade at the Dallas Mavericks on social media amid the public response by the airline to end its "two bags fly free" policy. The change came as a shock to many travelers who fly Southwest because of the longstanding policy. WFAA spoke to industry expert Steve Cosgrove, who said he believes the changes could impact passenger loyalty, especially for those flying through Dallas Love Field, Southwest’s home base. "People would drive to Love Field even if DFW was better or more convenient because they had the free bag option," said Cosgrove. "They don’t have that now." Southwest officials in the release said the changes are "aimed to deepen and reward loyalty between Southwest and its most engaged Customers." “We have tremendous opportunity to meet current and future customer needs, attract new customer segments we don’t compete for today, and return to the levels of profitability that both we and our Shareholders expect,” Southwest CEO Bob Jordan said in a press release. “We will do all this while remaining focused on what’s made us strong—our people and the authentic, friendly, and award-winning customer service only they can provide.” Many travelers WFAA spoke with were not happy with the change and said it will make them reconsider flying with Southwest again. On Thursday, Southwest Airlines responded to the backlash with a social post that essentially throws shade at the Mavericks and that public relations nightmare post-Luka Doncic trade. "It's not like we traded Luka... 👀," Southwest Airlines said on Instagram. Ouch. The post then goes on to pitch to customers "why you're still going to love flying with us" despite the recent bag policy changes. The post details the intricacies of how Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred Members still get two free bags and A-List Members get one free checked bag. The post concludes by saying what hasn't changed is the "Southwest Hospitality that you all know and love." Based on the reaction to the post, it didn't fly (pun intended) with many commenters. "This is such a tone deaf post on the heels of destroying your brand identity and alienating your loyal customers," one of the most-liked comments read. "This kinda feels like gaslighting lol," said another top-liked commenter.
