Been using these basic Edifier speakers I got on Amazon for like $50 for the past 3 years. Sounded fine to me. Watched movies, listened to music, no complaints. Everyone on here kept saying you need to invest in real speakers to hear what you're missing. "Night and day difference" they said. "You'll never go back." So I saved up and bought a pair of powered speakers everyone recommends for around $400. Set them up yesterday all excited to hear this massive improvement. They sound... slightly better? Maybe? Honestly I'm not sure if I'm just placebo-ing myself into thinking they're better because I spent $400. Like yeah the bass is a bit clearer and the highs are crisper I guess. But is it $350 worth of better? I really don't think so. I used Moneygpt to calculate what else I could've done with that $400 and it's kind of depressing. Could've put it in savings. Paid down some credit card debt. Fixed the rattling noise in my car. Instead I bought speakers that sound marginally better than what I had. Maybe my ears just aren't good enough to appreciate the difference. Or maybe the difference isn't as huge as this sub makes it out to be for normal people who aren't sitting in treated rooms doing critical listening sessions. Don't get me wrong they're nice speakers. But are they life-changing? No. Do I regret spending $400? Kind of yeah. Anyone else upgrade and feel underwhelmed? Or do I just have bad ears lol. Every speaker is good for specific music styles and other specific uses, but what's generally the one that is good at everything, at all the music styles, that doesn't have one thing it's noticably better at? I don't want a speaker that's better at like lower mids but worse at highs. Or a speaker that's better at highs but worse at lower mids. (Like the ELAC 3.0 B5.3 compared to the KEF Q1 Meta) I've been searching for so so long but there just doesn't seem to be anything out there.. i want EVERY music style to sound good. I want both male and female vocals to sound good (female vocals appearantly don't sound good on the ELAC). I want a good soundstage and imaging. Why is such a "general" speaker impossible to find? Just a realistic speaker that puts out realistic sound that's not too sharp but not too dull, just REALISTIC. Something everyone likes. (I don't mind if it doesn't go below 50hz and i'm not getting a sub as i live in an appartment building.) After a long discussion on my previous post, plus weeks of research, videos, and reading articles, I finally reached a conclusion about smart speakers for Home Assistant. Short version: There is no single “best” solution. There are two valid paths: A fully local setup A cloud-based setup Each has clear pros and cons, and neither is perfect. Option 1: Fully local voice assistant If your main goal is privacy, local control, and no vendor lock-in, then right now the best option is clearly: Home Assistant Voice Preview Edition Yes, it’s still a preview / experimental product from Nabu Casa, but despite that, it’s currently the best value-for-money local voice speaker for Home Assistant. What makes it special: It can act as your main voice assistant for smart home control It can be your music player, controlling (Spotify, Other music services, Local music files via Music Assistant) All of this via voice commands, locally That last point is huge. None of the big three (Alexa, Google Assistant, Siri) can natively play local music libraries via voice the way Home Assistant can. On top of that, HAVPE can rely entirely on: Local AI models Local STT, NLP, and TTS You can ask it things like smart home questions or general questions (e.g. gold prices, news, etc.) and get spoken replies Sounds perfect, right? Well… not quite. A more advanced local option: FutureProofHomes Satellite1 If you like the HAVPE concept but want better hardware, then FutureProofHomes Satellite1 is worth mentioning. Compared to HAVPE: 4 microphones instead of 2 Support for a stronger speaker (up to 25W) Extra sensors Same overall capabilities (local voice, HA control, Music Assistant, AI integration) Credit where it’s due: the product is well thought out, and the effort behind it is impressive. That said, I personally didn’t like it enough to choose it. Why? $70 for the board alone Add shipping + customs You still need (a speaker, a 3D-printed enclosure "extra cost if you don’t own a printer") Realistically, you’re looking at $100+ minimum, plus time and effort for assembly and setup For roughly the same budget, I’d honestly rather buy two HAVPE units. And most importantly Satellite1 still suffers from the same two core problems as HAVPE. The two big problems with fully local solutions 1 You need a powerful home server A local voice assistant is not “just a speaker”. Every voice interaction requires: STT (speech-to-text) NLP (understanding intent) TTS (text-to-speech) If you want decent performance — especially with larger AI models (7B parameters and above) — a Raspberry Pi 4 running Home Assistant is simply not enough. I’ve seen solutions like FutureProofHomes Nexus1, which is basically an RP-based device with an NVIDIA developer GPU attached. Personally, I find that impractical. I’m not going to spend hundreds of dollars on a GPU just to use it only for voice commands. If I’m buying a GPU, it makes way more sense to: Build a proper home server Use it for AI, media processing, automations, and other workloads 2 Audio quality and media storage If you decide to play local music and avoid monthly subscriptions then you’ll need: A NAS to store your music Music Assistant running there (not as a Home Assistant add-on) High-quality audio (especially FLAC) requires processing power and proper storage. And no matter how good your smart speaker is: A small speaker will never replace a real sound system So realistically, you’ll still need: A proper home sound system Smart speakers acting mainly as voice interfaces, not main audio devices Option 2: Cloud-based smart speakers Honestly? Right now, none of the big three are truly good: They all fail badly in different ways — with Google being slightly less bad in some areas. Smart home control with Home Assistant All three struggle, you need hacks, workarounds, or ugly integrations. Google is the least painful option: Official home assistant integration Google cast can be used for responses and announcements Still far from ideal. Music playback None of them support local music playback All push you toward paid subscriptions Google is the only exception: You can play music from YouTube Music for free Yes, there are ads and limitations — but it still works AI intelligence All three assistants are honestly… bad. Painfully dumb. They struggle with questions that any modern AI model can answer instantly. The thing that might change everything Google has announced a new smart speaker coming in Spring 2026. The most important part? It will be powered by Gemini!! If this works the way I expect: Best AI model in the market Running directly on the speaker No need for a local AI server STT, NLP, and TTS handled entirely by Google’s infrastructure Seamless music via YouTube Music If — and that’s a big if — this happens without extra monthly subscriptions, it could be a complete game changer for smart homes. Of course, the downside is obvious: Privacy Everything runs on Google servers But honestly? Google already has my data. Buying a speaker won’t suddenly change that. My final decision I decided to wait and slow down. I’ll wait for Google’s new Gemini-powered speaker and test it myself. If it delivers even half of what I expect, it will be — for me — the best overall solution, no competition. As for privacy?
