Wanting everyone's personal experiences with emulation on the steam deck.
Basically the title if you guys wouldn't mind sharing, I'm fed up of googling what its like and getting mixed answers so I figured talking to some people in Reddit would be the best bet. reason I ask a question that feels like it has perhaps been recycled is because I'm considering purchase for emulation ONLY pretty much. I want to know at what point do you guys experience lagging/performance issues when emulating PS2 games? is it at 1X native, 2X, 3X etc? is there a decent amount of leadway for resolution and texture options before a significant drop in performance. submitted by /u/MadToxicRescuer to r/SteamDeck [link] [comments]

Buys Thor > Plays something he could have played better on a Steam Deck
In all seriousness, I was just shocked FFXV ran at all. I mean, it is over a decade old now, but it's still a great looking game and is not all that optimized to begin with. For those wondering, it worked out of the box (with the known config) on GameNative. It didn't load up right away, but I think it worked on the 2nd or 3rd try. It also takes genuinely 5 minutes or more on a black screen before it finally starts. With all low settings and at 720p, it's not as stable as I would like. It hits 30fps often enough, but there are certainly dips and stutters into 24/25fps range. Still playable though. If you set the resolution to 75% in game settings, it becomes a pretty damn stable 30fps. A bit blurry, but on this screen (and with GameNative's new sharpening option), I thought it looked all right. Basically...? Playable, but it would just be better on my PC or Steam Deck tbh. I was just happy to play it on this thing at all. It's also funny that I have been waiting for this thing for so long, and now that I've finally got it, there's just not much that I want to or can play on it at the moment. I'm currently working through FFXV and GTA IV. I'll get around to emulation again though. Top things I want to get to are Pokemon Emerald and Metroid Samus Returns. submitted by /u/clothing_throwaway to r/AynThor [link] [comments]

PSA: Mario Kart Online is actually active on Steam Deck (Mario Kart Wii Deluxe)
I recently found out about Mario Kart Wii Deluxe X (a massive MKWii mod) and figured others might not know about it. It's fully playable online on the Steam Deck, and it’s a game-changer. It's got 700+ tracks, including maps from every previous and newer Mario Kart game with a bunch of QOL features. The best part, there is an active community. Setup: Dolphin Emulator I suggest this guide for button remapping for similar controls to MK8 This is some gameplay I captured on the deck during an online game (Locked 60fps at 2x upscale on Dolphin). Seriously impressed with the Wii modding scene right now. submitted by /u/SakIsBack to r/SteamDeck [link] [comments]

What convinced you to get your Steam Deck?
I'm curious as to why other people chose to get their Steam Decks. For me personally, it started when I started to fall out of love with Nintendo and PlayStation, both of which I am a lifelong fangirl. My earliest memories of being alive are of the PSP and DS Lite. Before the Steam Deck I had many handhelds as that is my preferred way to play, I had a Switch, PSP, PS Vita, and pretty much every DS and 3DS. However in recent years I have come to resent Nintendo a bit for pricing and also all the recent Pokémon releases, it's become very apparent that they kinda just want money. As for PlayStation, I kept having hardware issues with the Vita and on top of that, I realised I don't even really have a PlayStation library on my PS5, most of those games came from the PS Plus subscription, if I were to cancel it or not be able to afford it, I would lose all my games, the subscription was holding me hostage. So I gave up on the Switch last year, I needed some extra cash as I am a university student and I realised I wasn't playing 90℅ of my overpriced library, so I sold it to a friend of a friend. The PS Vita completely broke on me at the end of last year and I was just so frustrated that I couldn't just have a nice handheld experience. So I started playing games on my PC which I typically only ever used for game development for university. I enjoyed the games and the ability to build my library and keep it but I still missed playing handheld, it felt like the answer was there to whole time, I just needed a Steam Deck. So now I'm a massive Steam Deck fangirl and haven't touched any of my other consoles since. If I need to play a PSP or Switch game, I just emulate it which is amazing. I was surprised at how well Breath of the Wild runs on the Deck emulators. submitted by /u/K4T5UM1 to r/SteamDeck [link] [comments]

“Dude, just get a Steam Deck…” truer words haven’t been spoken
I’ve owned the Steam Deck for a while now, but never seriously considered it for emulation. I had an Ayaneo DMG for that which I quite liked, but I was never really picking it up as frequently as I was picking up the Steam Deck. Finally decided to set up EmuDeck today following Russ and my goodness… it feels like I’ve attained enlightenment! This feels like peak Retro gaming! The games blend in perfectly, as if they were always meant to be played on the Deck! No themes, UI tweaks, ES-DE updates (they weren’t really big gripes to begin with, but still), and yet so much customisability. And the Deck also automatically categorised all the games by system under collections! Just perfection! I’m grinning ear-to-ear like a 10-year old now playing GTA China Town Wars! submitted by /u/HermitUnbound to r/SBCGaming [link] [comments]

Is the Steam Deck the greatest gaming device of all time ? Yes.
After 20 years of gaming and 2 years of owning a Steam Deck OLED I’m confident this is the greatest gaming device of all time. The Steam Deck can : - Emulate every game up to the PS3 / 360 era AND the Switch. - Easily play PC games up to 2020 with great performances. - Play a lot of new (2020 onwards) AAA games with at least 30 fps without looking like a potato. - Stream those new games from your PS5 / high-end PC / GeForce Now if they’re too demanding for the Deck. - Play every indie game ever made. - Be played as a handheld or docked. - Be used as a PC for whatever reasons. Sure, it lacks a bit of power, but the sheer versatility of the device more than makes up for it. And let’s not forget SteamOS. This post is a love letter to the Steam Deck, thanks Valve ! submitted by /u/MrTorgue7 to r/SteamDeck [link] [comments]

Odin 3 killed my need for a Steam Deck
Hi everyone, This post is foe people who are considering odin 3 and my experience with it so far, as well as a dad and first day pre-order steam deck owner. When I saw Steam Deck announced I immediately knew this is what I was waiting for and it lived up and over delivered to all of my expectations! The goal was simple. To have a good battery life and be able to anytime turn it on for 15-30min and get some gaming time as a fresh father. Fast forward a few years I finished many many games, that I couldn't otherwise. But the portability was always a bit of an issue and so as a companion I preordered RP5. That one again crushed a big chunk of my backlog but somehow I started to feel the screen is a bit too small and the power is not there. I was heavily considering upgrading to RP6 and had it in the cart, however after thinking about it, my 33yo eyes were not anymore as comfortable with the screen size so I risked it and got ayn odin 3. All the talk about drivers not being there, games not running.. But otherwise it had everything I wanted. So I took a chance on it. Guys. This device is insane! First the build quality. It's miles better than RP5. The sticks, the feel of materials and how solid it feels in the hand. Second, the screen! For portability 6 inches is probably the best choice and I am very happy with it! Then we come to games and emulation. Even without the driver support, the progress has been made already and it's amazing! The PC games that it can run, starts to close the gap and gets close to my Steam Deck! It's crazy. It can play Elex no issues even over 60fps in some areas. It runs Witcher 3 with some flickering where I would recommend to wait for better drivers, but sits between 30-60 based on area and settings. My favorite Gothic 1 and 2 can be played at 120 fps! At native resolution. It can handle all small indie titles from steam. Next emulation. Botw runs better 45-60 and like 200 in shrines 😂. The graphical issues with latest Eden are so minimal that I can already play this no issue. And so do other Switch games. Ps2? Amazing! So then it begs the question, where does my Steam Deck fit? And unfortunately nowhere. Now with Odin 3 I will have to really sell it and upgrade to more powerful handheld for games that it actually can't run. More focusing on AAA stuff. I'm a bit sad as I love my Steam Deck, and it's an amazing device. But seeing how far arm the devices have come, it's crazy and brings so much potential for the future! Hopefully this will help you decide if the ayn odin 3 is right for you. I would recommend already 512 version as my 256gb is getting already full 😂 Thanks for I reading and have a great day! submitted by /u/MrTrynex to r/Handhelds [link] [comments]

What do you feel like your Steam Deck is NOT good for?
Hello! I'm a PS5 user but have also dabbled in the word of SBC Gaming. I have a small vertical and horizontal emulation device, but the power just isn't there for me, sooo... "Just get a Steam Deck bro." I love the idea of OLED handhelds, as I rarely use the TV unless it's for a really pretty game that I want that TV experience for. I have a lot of different situations in mind and different use cases including: PS5 streaming, Steam library, emulation, light PC gaming, OpenGOAL, old games I missed out on, newer games I didn't have a PC for, games I don't want to spend forever tweaking to play, etc. All that said, for me it's easier to get an idea of what the Steam Deck is NOT good for, and just determine if that's a deal breaker for me. Mainly wondering if my desires matched anyone else's in this sub, and if they feel satisfied with their Deck experience and what may be lacking? I'll take any feedback, thanks! EDIT: An hour later and 200+ comments... I appreciate all the responses and not immediately downvoting me and telling me to go watch videos or some shit. The device may not be perfect, but the community seems great submitted by

I wholeheartedly believe that the Steam Deck is the best gaming console out there right now.
I'm being deadly serious. After seeing Xbox increase the prices on the game pass by 50%, as well as Xbox, Playstation, & Nintendo increase their prices on their games & consoles, I feel like I made the right decision by getting a Steam deck instead. And based on the constantly positive reception that its getting, I feel like I'll be playing with it for a very long time, as I consider it one of my favorite gaming consoles of all time. EDIT: So im reading through you guy's comments, so to reiterate, I don't necessarily think it's better (Hardware & specs wise) than a PS5, Switch 2 & Series S/X. I was basically saying that Valve is such a supporting company that I feel like gaming & emulation still has hope, and not forcing you to pay a subscription for online, or increasing the prices on their different models of the Deck, or any if that BS. If you still believe that the other companies are better, that's completely fine, I just wanted to express my love for the Steam Deck overall and my slight distaste for the other companies. submitted by /u/ToonNinja_ to r/SteamDeck [link] [comments]

This 20 second clip should shut everyone up about the Steam Deck being more powerful than the Switch 2
There are still people saying they’ll emulate Switch 2 on the Steam Deck. Even if there were an emulator that was nearly as optimized as emulators for the original Switch, even an ROG Ally X would struggle to emulate Switch 2 hardware due to games using DLSS and RT cores. I don’t think there will be a handheld PC that would be capable of emulating Switch 2 for quite awhile, even with insane optimization. submitted by /u/VenZoah to r/NintendoSwitch2 [link] [comments]

The Steam Deck OLED has ruined my Switch 2 Experience
I've had a long history with Nintendo handhelds dating back to the GameBoy Pocket, and each of them hold a special place in my heart. So much so, that I even have them on display at home with all the different variations to boot. Despite getting the Steam Deck OLED, about half a year ago, it was collecting dust because I had already built a relationship with the Switch 1. Matter of fact, one of the first things I did on the Steam Deck was to try to emulate the Switch. That's why, despite some early doubts, I decided to get the Switch 2 on launch day. "Surely," I said to myself, "if Nintendo was so successful with the Switch 1, they would definitely keep the good times rolling by using the same playbook!" Three months later, and the situation has completely changed. I have to admit that it wasn't so much that I ran to the Steam Deck so much as Nintendo pushed me to the Steam Deck. Let's briefly take stock of what the situation is now with Switch 2. The LCD is... good... but not great. Physical games are few with many games just being digital keycards Physical cards perform much slower than even their microSD express counterparts. MicroSD EXPRESS cards are needed which are way pricier. Ports of games that already exist on other platforms are charged like they are completely new releases. Actual new third releases perform as good if not better on other platforms First party titles are few and (in my opinion) underwhelming. We still have no idea when most are coming out. No scaling option for my Switch 1 games - which now look horrible if the dev hasn't decided to release an update/upgrade/patch. So why the Steam Deck? Partly out of boredom with the Switch 2, but also a growing curiosity of what I had been missing on the Steam Deck - and man had I been missing out. In no particular order, I loved: That its a full fledged portable PC with the option to switch between a desktop and console UI Baked in support for most controllers The ability to load PC games from almost any source Strong community support to find cool new uses or experiences The OLED experience Steam sales and the amazing savings you'll find on there The library, oh that library! Lazy, sloppy games aren't at the top of their storefront list Knowing that I can take my games and play them on multiple forms of hardware. After all of that the Switch 2 is just collecting dust, and its making it harder and harder for me to justify purchasing it to begin with. I suppose I'll just have to wait and see when it will come out with the next compelling first party title - whenever that will be. Who knows, I may even end up selling the thing. One thing is for sure though, I won't be standing in line on launch day should their be another new Nintendo console in the future. submitted by /u/mwmademan to r/SteamDeck [link] [comments]

Why do people seem to enjoy gaming on a Steam Deck more than on PC?
I recently picked up a Steam Deck and have been having an absolute blast with it, playing Balatro, Slay the Spire, Persona 3/4, and emulating retro Nintendo games. This is after being in a bit of a gaming slump for the past year. But here’s the thing: I could always play those same games on my gaming PC, which is literally hooked up to my TV in the living room. And I know I’m not the only one, plenty of reviewers and other Steam Deck owners also say they enjoy playing in handheld mode at home and that it reignited their love of gaming, even when they already have a powerful PC available. So my question is: is there a reason why a decent amount of people prefer gaming on a Steam Deck at home instead of their PC? A sidenote is that while I'm using my steam deck on the couch I'll also have a show/movie playing on the TV so maybe I just like having two things at one. submitted by /u/Initial_Milk_1056 to r/SteamDeck [link] [comments]

Steam Deck is not meant to run 2023 AAA games well.
The reason why I am writing this post, is because I have seen a lot of people wanting to buy a Steam Deck with the intention to play the newest games on the go. Games like Starfield, Baldur's Gate 3, etc. When asked in this subreddit whether the Deck can run these games, the answer is usually: "well, as long as you temper your expectations and lower the settings: yes!". This is not the case. The Steam Deck's CPU was perfectly capable of keeping up with games that were designed with the PS4 in mind, such as Red Dead Redemption 2 and Death Stranding. Even Armored Core 6, which is also a cross-gen title. And therefore, the results on Steam Deck are truly stunning. However, this isn't the case anymore. Games have moved on. What you'll see now, is games with CPU-limitations. For example: Baldur's Gate 3 struggles to reach even 20 fps on the Steam Deck in later sections of the game. The problem with CPU-limitations, is that it can't be solved by scaling back the graphics. No matter how much FSR you throw at it, it won't save the performance. The framerate's at a dead end. This doesn't mean that the Steam Deck is "obsolete", it isn't. It can run pretty much any game up till 2022. It can even emulate almost every title, even new ones on the Switch: like Pikmin 4. And I truly recommend the Deck, it's such a great device. But please, don't expect it to run the latest and greatest games for years to come. That's not what the Deck is for. TL;DR: If you buy the Steam Deck with the sole intention of running the newest AAA titles, you will likely be disappointed. submitted by /u/Tedinasuit to r/SteamDeck [link] [comments]
