does it matter what type of material i use?
i know about the ceiling span issue. most my ceilings are stone (same as my walls) other than in larger rooms i will have a couple that need to be straw or thatch. was mostly trying to see if i could make the rooms warmer by changing walls, ceilings, doors, or windows. (i haven't bothered with floors yet) guess i'm going to have to find room for another fcooking fire/fireplace..

Total seclusion personally designed by Frank Lloyd Wright's master draftsman - John Howe. Very unique.
The floor-to-ceiling wood-burning stone fireplace is constructed with over 16 tons of limestone. It's unique with oriental vibes. Not updated, yet. So, let's hope that a new owner won't mess it up. The art deco ceiling at the entrance and near kitchen area is incredible. Everything seems to be handcrafted there. I wonder where the electricity comes from. https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/9350-Blaylock-Cir-Prior-Lake-MN-55372/2166101\_zpid/ submitted by /u/jve909 to r/zillowgonewild [link] [comments]

Previous homeowners painted the natural stone fireplace and wall white. Is there any hope in restoring it?
I hope this is the right place. If not, please guide me where to go because this has haunted me for 5 years. Like I said, they painted it white. Why? I have no idea. Husband and I are millennials but holy crap the owners pulled the "millennial DIY white everything" thing so hard and it's so sad to look at. All we know is the paint is house paint and its a matte finish. When I asked my dad for advice, he said we'd have an easier time painting a "fake rock" over every rock over trying to strip the white off. Is there any hope or should I finally let it rest? Any help is appreciated. I've attached what it looked like before those owners and what it looks like with the "lovely" white. Apologies for how dirty it all is. We hate it so much, we never bothered making anything of it. Edit: I'm reading everything you all are commenting and I'm going to go through it all with the husband when he gets home from his night shift tomorrow morning. Keep it coming, though. I've never heard of dry ice or walnut blasting and they sound really cool. I have seen a few ask if its actually real stone and yes, it is. Floor to ceiling to walls and it has a hearth extension going from wall to wall. The house was built in the 80s and this style of stone fireplace was very popular. Okay, this is too funny. As I was googling similar fireplaces in the 80s, I came across what I can only imagine is the inspo picture the previous homeowners used. It's the exact "transformation/before and after", lol. Posting it in the comments. submitted by /u/Ani_meh23 to r/Home [link] [comments]

De-millenial greyed our 1900 fireplace
Previous owner did a lot of character removing, millennial grey updates to our 1900 Victorian (drives me nuts but he did a lot of good stuff too). Even though it was an unnecessary and purely cosmetic change, we couldn't wait to redo the fireplace. It always felt so cold and out of place to us. The before picture was clearly already a tiny bit in progress, but we carefully chiseled away all the stone. Attempted for far too long to save the original brick before two different experts told us not to bother. And then found thin brick to at least keep it similar and slowly did it ourselves despite never touching tile or brick work before. (I don't suggest starting with herringbone patterns, nearly lost all sanity there.) Previous mantle was also not actually able to properly support weight so made our own new one and finished it and installed it ourselves too. The wall work was also a pain since the stone left quite a gap and it's far from perfect (still need to do some baseboard work), but I'm very pleased with what we were able to do on our own. You can tell how slow we are with the Christmas decorations showing, but 9 months later and I'm pretty happy. Thought this group might appreciate the idea of going to a ton of work for something unnecessary but incredibly satisfying. submitted by /u/vlou4 to r/centuryhomes [link] [comments]
