I can't handle the new modesty switch
I'm aware that countless people have already discussed this. I guess I just want to contribute, because I am losing my mind over it. As much as I want to say I'm happy for the women in the church who are now dressing more how they want to dress, it makes me furious. And that's not because I feel like it's unfair to those who sat through conference talk after conference talk about how evil it was to show their shoulders in a prom dress, or those who always had to wear layers and capris on ridiculously humid 100-degree summer days, or modify their "immodest" clothing to meet church standards in order to avoid being silently judged (actually if I remember right, not-so-silently judged) by 99% of church members. What really kills me is the ones who are really flaunting their new wardrobes and pretending like NONE of the above ever happened are the ones who claim to be the most TBM of them all. All of these influencers who pretend every new development in the church is the most wonderful, inspired thing to ever happen in the history of the world. My sisters. My sister-in-law. My mother-in-law. All going out and buying their new summer outfits and wearing them like it's no big deal, now that God finally caved to social pressure (again). And what a blessing that He did! What a miracle!!! It is infuriating, and I just might lose my mind over it. If these people were already nuanced, sure, whatever. Or if they had always been vocal about how dumb modesty is, whatever. But nope: these are the same people who would jump all over those who wore the exact same outfits 2 years ago. The ones who would judge so-and-so for wearing a sleeveless dress to prom, and judge so-and-so's mother for letting so-and-so wear a sleeveless dress to prom. But hey, in their defense, it's not like it was ever a commandment to be modest. It was simply a different time. A different culture. Simply policy, not doctrine. And it's not like garments were ever about modesty in the first place. 🤗 submitted by /u/Informal-Ad6871 to r/exmormon [link] [comments]

My dad is a creep. Ham pizza in Italy.
(Yes we’re biologically related I look like his twin which makes me hate myself even more) He hates me for being a girl and my entire life, despite living under the same roof, he said probably less than 1000 words to me besides hurling insults at me. I live in a HCOL city and cannot afford to move out. He constantly told me growing up that SOME people are predisposed to being a dumbass, and calls me a stupid bitch all the time despite needing me to help him with stuff. He ruined my high school graduation by screaming and fighting with my mom, refusing to take pictures with me, and that resulted in my mom throwing flowers he bought me reluctantly into the trash. And for my undergrad graduation, he refused to take pictures with me again, and my mother directed her anger towards me of course, and not her adult son. And the pictures taken were of him glaring at me like he wanted to kill me because SHE told him to stand next to me. I remember crying right after I graduated (I had two because I was in two separate programs in college) and both time she called me screaming that I ruined THEIR experience at MY graduation because I sat in the dining halls crying and refusing to eat with them, as happy families around were cheering their children on. I am dreading my masters graduation. Since I hit puberty, his gaze was… always off. I wear extremely baggy clothes and long pajama pants and sweatshirts even in the dead of summer when it’s 100 degrees outside. The only times I ever wear even a t shirt with my arms out is when I’m hanging out with friends. I literally strip off my sweatshirt in their car (we’re not religious or anything). I don’t wear shorts that go above my knees anymore. My friends joke that my collection of dad shorts and jean shorts make me pull up the functions like a butch lesbian every time. I used to wear shorter shorts until recently. Back in high school, he slut shamed me for wearing shorts in front of my family. They were halfway between my knees and butt, below where my fingertips reached. He started telling me that I was disgusting and he saw that when he went to pick me up. I remember clear as day even thought this was ten years ago, that there was a boy in salmon shorts of similar length standing NEXT TO ME in that pickup area. His argument was that “no one was wearing shorts but you which is why I am saying you shouldn’t wear shorts” which was NOT true. I remember screaming at the dinner table I’m going to tell everyone at school you’re a creep tomorrow and my mother hitting me hard on my head and my grandma jumping in to alleviate the situation. Last year, I went out for a jog in my Nike shorts. My legs are fairly short so it wasn’t like they were even that short on me. My dad sat on the porch, taking a call. I ran past him into the garage to get something, and kept seeing him take multiple peeks at my legs, and look down. I felt like throwing up. I felt so sick. And I feel disgusted even typing this out. When I am around him, even with thick sweatshirts on, even when it’s a billion degrees outside, I hunch over to not show any figure. I walk around the house hunched over and I only wear short sleeves around the house in the summer when he leaves. I freeze up when he walks close/behind me. I remember back in high school, there was a parent night, and this beautiful girl in my class was wearing a tube top and was supposed to give the parents in my class a tour. And I wanted to cry because I was so scared for her. I remember breathing a sigh of relief when our teach told us she couldn’t make it that night. My mom complains all the time that I don’t dress “beautifully” like other girls my age and she constantly says “YOUR DAD DOESNT CARE. YOURE OVERTHINKING”. Despite literally hearing creepy comments he’s made about me and other WOMEN my whole life. Once, she was so frustrated that she screamed in the car “WHY DO YOU TREAT YOUR POOR FATHER LIKE THIS? HAS HE SA YOU?!”. I’ve never told anyone and I just.. I feel so sick every time I think about this and I just want to cry. I love traveling because I can wear cutesy outfits overseas as far away from him as possible. Oh and his dad creeps me out too. My grandfather used to treat me really well until my teenage years and I couldn’t view him the same way again after he confirmed that my dad hates me because I’m not a son AND told me once that he could see into the bathroom when I was showering because the “blinds had a gap”. You could only see into the bathroom through the blinds if you literally stood and peeked in through a certain angle (they’re the Home Depot blinds with the drawstring thing that you can pull to flip) and I felt violated and couldn’t view him the same away again. I’m scared to tell people because my family will just accuse me of being a liar. Which is why every time I’m showering, I choose when my dad is the busiest because I’m scared he’ll look in as well (my house is weirdly shaped so his work area looks right at the bathroom window). And whenever he goes outside as I’m in the shower, I die a little bit on the inside. I patch the bathroom window with printer paper and my mother screams that I am mentally insane. I honestly might be. I refuse to date or consider marriage despite being at that age and my mom constantly curses me to find a husband as “loyal and perfect” as hers. I shudder at the idea of having a daughter and allowing her own father to sexualize her. Anyways, ham pizza from Italy. submitted by /u/deadlyparents to r/GirlDinnerDiaries [link] [comments]

Summer outfits
Salaam all. I wanted to share something I’ve been struggling with recently and hopefully get some insights. I am 33 years old. I’ve always dressed in long skirts and pants and dresses and at least short sleeves. Recently I’ve become really down about how as Muslim women we are so often overheated in the summer months and while playing sports. I’m considering more and more taking a more liberal approach to my clothing and wearing things that I don’t consider to be sexual, but things that are just more practical for the heat, like sleeveless tops and mid thigh shorts. I’m honestly just sick of missing out on so many things that I don’t consider bad or harmful because I have to cover up so much. I believe in the Quranic principle that one should dress modestly for the culture that they are in. I also believe that a lot of the traditional clothing expectations were influenced by the culture of that time period. And lastly, I definitely believe that there is a difference between dressing sexually versus dressing in a way that shows more skin, but is not sexual and is just more practical. I’m sorry if this offends anyone at all, but I’m just wondering if anyone has had any similar experiences. submitted by /u/FewBicycle3310 to r/muslimgirlswithtaste [link] [comments]

What are the "cool girls" in your life wearing so far this spring?
I noticed that all the hip young women at my work are all wearing midi dresses this spring, no more knee-length dresses anywhere, and hardly a maxi. Same thing at a fancy cocktail attire wedding I went to - all the hip young "hot" girls were wearing midi length slinky slip dresses with a slit, whereas in the past at such an event I'd have seen more mini dresses. And of course for casual wear - wide leg pants or jeans with a boxy white tee or something with some minimal sneakers. A tiered flowy white cotton skirt for casual/dressy. Those seem to be the "uniforms" I'm seeing all the people in my life at work, among friends, family, on the street, etc., who are the type of people who always look put together and fashionable. It's weird that I haven't seen midi length very highlighted in any 2026 spring/summer content I've been looking for. I'm so sick of videos and articles and stuff that just look like they are rehashing fashion shows. I like content that feels like a cool older sister is showing you her actual closet. I like Anna Reid the best for this - she tries the stuff on how she would actually wear it out in the world, shows a bunch of street style pics in the real world, shows of a bunch of outfits relatively quickly, but the Youtube videos are long enough to enjoy, etc. I wish I could find more content like hers. What are you seeing the "cool girls" in your life or on the street wearing for spring? submitted by /u/IncognitoResearch111 to r/femalefashionadvice [link] [comments]

Where do women in NYC shop for everyday summer clothes?
Hi everyone! I’m curious where do women in NY usually shop for casual, everyday summer clothes like T-shirts, tanks, and easy outfits? I’m thinking of stuff that’s stylish but still practical for walking around the city in the heat. Are there go-to stores, brands, or even specific neighborhoods/markets people love? Would appreciate any recommendations..especially places that are affordable but still cute and good quality! Thanks :) submitted by /u/tanayakaul to r/AskNYC [link] [comments]

My(f23) former pastor defended Larry Nassar in a pre-sermon rant about the winter olympics, and my parents are relaying his message to my brother(m12)
I am not OOP. The OOP for this post is u/throwraowlcheesecake. His posts were made to r/OpenChristian, a community that while smaller than r/Christianity, prides itself on being more progressive and LGBTQ friendly with rules that don't allow anyone to speak negatively about them Important Context: Larry Nassar was a Team USA Women's National Gymnastics Team doctor from 1996-2014, where he used his position to exploit and sexually assault hundreds of young athletes as part of the largest sexual abuse scandal in sports history. Nassar was arrested and charged with sexually assaulting at least 265 young women and girls over a 22-year period under the guise of medical treatment. His victims included numerous Olympic gymnasts, with some as young as six-years-old OOP also added that the church was a Non-Denominational church Trigger Warning: pedophilia, victim blaming minors Mood Spoiler: unfortunate Original Post: (February 11th, 2026) I haven't lived with my parents since starting college, and I currently live by myself while working two jobs. I live a little over an hour away, but I come home for the holidays and other occasions, along with the Super Bowl this past Sunday. My parents are very religious, and I have a younger brother who's twelve. I always sleep over whenever I visit, and the only rule is that I must attend church (if staying on a Sunday) because mom doesn't want anyone home when they're not there, and that extended to friends and family since I was young. I was surprised when it extended to me since I grew up in their home, but I'm glad to no longer be forced to attend church every week. My dad always held a Super Bowl party since I was young, and I came up on Saturday to help set up as usual. This situation happened as a result of attending church on Super Bowl Sunday Despite our pastor taking a moment to give his thoughts on the big game before the sermon, the situation came from something else he vented about, and that was the Winter Olympics. Ironically, it wasn't about any of the athletes who made political statements (which was surprising given his history with sharing political opinions). It was about something he and his wife discussed and felt led to share. Long story short, they advised their kids to change the channel if figure skating came on any of the broadcasts, and their reasons were harmful in my opinion. He said that some of the female outfits were "revealing" and not good to watch because it can lead to lust. He also went on about how "the world" finds ways to "normalize telling girls to dress inappropriately". He even said the Summer Olympics did the same thing with the uniforms that the female gymnasts wore... going as far as to call it "normalized p*rn" because their parents would "never allow them to wear a skirt that shows as much" as the uniform outside of the sport setting He also said the uniforms "allowed creeps to watch with lustful intentions and not be questioned" because it was normalized, and he didn't like that possibility when one of his kids used to do gymnastics. He did, however, mention a rule change in recent years that allowed girls to wear shorts over their uniforms during competitions; something he supported and would've required his daughter to wear full-time if she still played. He also said it was unfortunate that the rule change and the female German Olympic team's full-body gymnastics uniforms happened after Larry Nassar's case because "no one wanted to point out the inappropriate uniforms" that he was "forced to be around" because there was an "agenda" to punish him. He also said that many girls were "playing the victim" because society "allowed them to". He even said Nassar "maybe wouldn't have done what he did" if not for the uniforms he was forced to be around, and I personally thought that that shifted blame onto the uniforms instead of his actions. His overarching point, aside from advising parents to consider turning the channel, was to be aware of how the world tries to push their kids to dress inappropriately by normalizing figure skating and gymnastics attire, and I disagreed with much of his message My parents and I discussed it on the drive home, and I mentioned how I thought it was harmful to send that message. My parents disagreed from a purity perspective because they taught purity to us when we turned twelve. I think it's harmful because purity should be a personal choice instead of something instilled by your parents when you're just hitting puberty. I also disagree with how the pastor sexualized both sports and absolved Nassar by blaming the outfits, but they didn't have an issue with it. Heck, a few of the pastor's points received applause (including from my parents), and the whole thing ruined my mood. My mom also plans to inform one of our cousins' parents (whose daughter does gymnastics) about the rule change in case she doesn't know. And while that's fine on its own, I disagree with her motives behind it The message shouldn't be that girls are responsible for the actions of those who sexualize them. They should wear shorts because they want to, not because they think they're doing something wrong by wearing appropriate clothing for the sport. I also felt the pastor was telling on himself and projecting onto the congregation, but my parents didn't see it that way. I helped them clean up for their guests when we returned, but left before the game as some guests began to filter in. My parents were disappointed and said it would've been better if I hadn't come at all, even though I'd helped set up. I'm more concerned with the message they told my brother and how Mom plans to relay it to my cousin. Needless to say, I'll never attend that church again, and I only did whenever I visited, like once a year. Does anyone have any experience with correcting a message from a parent that might be harmful to a younger sibling? Update Post: (February 13th, 2026) My father called me for the first time since we spoke on Sunday at their home, and he had the same tone as his text. He said it was disrespectful of me to leave early when they let me sleep over despite helping them set up. He also said he didn't appreciate having to tell guests why I left early, and he said he made up some excuse. I reiterated my disgust for the sermon and how they supported it. And in hindsight, I should've walked out and waited in the foyer. Granted, I couldn’t drive home because we carpooled, but I'm disappointed that I didn't. However, since the church encourages viewers to share their videos in the descriptions of their YouTube sermons and on social media, I decided to vent my frustration that way using malicious compliance. I left a review of the church that explained why I'll never attend again. I also mentioned how the pastor defended Larry Nassar and left a link to the sermon, along with a timestamp to when his rant began. The link will prove the truth of my review. And if they delete the video, it'll only make it louder (when the link leads to a page that says 'deleted video'). I also made an Instagram story about my disgust for the sermon and left a link to the YouTube sermon there too, and many of my friends have also told me their similar disgust I've lost almost all of my respect for my parents, but that's nothing new unfortunately. I was debating cutting them off when I was in high school, but figured that going to college would provide space that'd help prevent that. I was wrong, but I shouldn't have been surprised. Them finding no issue with the pastor's rant is par for the course of how they still support a certain someone with strong ties to a certain list, and much of my teen years were annoying because of their obsession with that figure. They also loved it when our pastor got political in the past, and that's not what church should be. I return for one sermon simply because of my parents' home rule, and he spins the Winter Olympics into a rant defending Larry Nassar. It's always some new demographic every week with these people, and Sunday was a reminder of why I don't miss church As a result of me not apologizing, Dad said I'm not allowed to come to next year's party, and that's totally fine with me. The other unfortunate part is that Mom talked to my cousin's mom about the sermon, and she agreed with much of it and said her daughter would be required to wear shorts over her uniform going forward because she was unaware that she could. Again, nothing wrong with deciding to wear them. But the message shouldn't be that women are responsible for creeps like my pastor who admitted to being unable to appreciate a sport because his mind is fixated on sex. I don't get why certain Christians like my parents are hyperfixated on it like with purity. My cousin's parents are also Christians, and they agreed with turning the channel from figure skating too. They'll probably do the same with gymnastics in two years, and my church (along with others I've researched) have had females wear t-shirts over their bathing suits at church gatherings with a pool, and I've attended parties with that rule since I was little. That doesn’t stop them from going to the beach where others aren't wearing t-shirts over their bathing suits, but you could go down the hypocrisy rabbit hole forever, and I'm ready to go low-contact. I won't be attending Christmas or Thanksgiving or any other gatherings they have. Granted, it sucks for my younger brother, but I need to worry about my own mental health first ________________ (Comments) (davegammelgard): "What's actually happening is that the pastor is normalizing adult men being creeps and lusting after young girls. This is the way purity culture has worked for hundreds of years - girls are expected to be pure because men can't control themselves. It's not just true in Christianity, but also in Islam, and other cultures. This attitude is harmful to everyone because it reinforces that idea that "boys will be boys" and won't be held accountable, while girls are held responsible for what men do to them. They're "asking for it" if they dress a certain way or behave a certain way. Men need to be taught self control and responsibility. That's the real answer" (Chaoticallyorganized) replied: "This is exactly what it is. No normal man watches figure skating or gymnastics with sexual thoughts towards underage girls. This pastor is unquestionably a disgusting human being and not safe to be around" (exretailer_29): "If you read different sources on Larry Nassar he was sexually molesting all age females from 6-20. So it wasn't all about what some females wore. It was about power and Control and some deep seated evil that drove Larry Nassar. How can a "6-8" year old dress in an inappropriate manner? The onus was always on Larry Nassar. A female could be fully covered up and if someone has evil intentions it doesn't matter what outfit is being worn. It doesn't have to be just Larry Nassar it can be anyone who perceives the victim as being someone they can overpower or take advantage of. Many religious authorities do project their own misguided sexual feelings and I think that is a defence mechanism on their part. The pastor is wrong and I think your parents are too!" submitted by /u/MadisonBrave to r/BestofRedditorUpdates [link] [comments]

A 14 year-old girl gets a summer job as a babysitter for a mysterious man and vanishes without a trace — what happened to Margaret Ellen Fox?
Margaret Ellen “Maggie” Fox, born February 4, 1960, lived in Burlington, New Jersey. She had a large family and lived a "average" life. According to her younger brother Joe, the Fox family was extremely close, and the siblings were each other’s best friends. But as Margaret entered her teenage years, she began developing interests common to girls her age — clothes, fashion, makeup, and accessories. She didn’t have sisters or many close female friends to share those interests with, which often left her feeling isolated. Joe also explained that Margaret was frequently bullied at school. She would sometimes come home in tears after classmates picked on her. In one incident, a group of kids threw snowballs at her as she was leaving school and continued doing so along part of her walk home. That June 1974, Margaret and her cousin Lynn Parks (age 11) decided to take advantage of their summer vacation by finding a small job. They placed a babysitting ad in local newspapers, offering childcare services. On June 19, 1974, a man calling himself “John Marshall” responded to the ad. He called the number in the newspaper — which belonged to Lynn’s house — and claimed he and his wife needed a babysitter for their 5-year-old son. He lived in the nearby town of Mount Holly, but because Lynn was only 11 and would need to take a bus alone, her parents did not allow her to accept the job. That left the opportunity open for Margaret. For a 14-year-old girl, the job sounded perfect: $40 a week — very good money for 1974 access to the family’s swimming pool and a chance to earn independence during the summer After a few postponed meetings, “John Marshall” arranged to meet Margaret in person on June 24, 1974.Although it was reported that Margaret’s father did have contact with “John Marshall" through phone calls, "John" never provided his address or any additional details about his life. Disappearance On June 24,1974,Margaret woke up excited for her first day. Her younger brother, Joe Fox, walked her to the bus stop and saw her board the 8:40 AM Transport of New Jersey bus toward Mount Holly. She wore a light blue floral shirt, brown bell-bottom jeans,a navy-and-white checkered jacket tied around her waist,a gold necklace and bracelet with blue stones and she carried a brown backpack with her swimsuit and her eyeglasses case. Her parents had asked her to call once she arrived at John’s house — but the call never came. At first, they assumed she simply forgot. But when 2 PM passed… then 2:30… then 3 PM, panic set in. Margaret’s mother called the number John had given. After many rings, a woman answered and said no one named John Marshall lived there. A second call was answered by a man, who explained that the number belonged to a payphone. Realizing something was terribly wrong, Margaret’s parents immediately contacted police. Within hours, family, neighbors, and police began searching Mount Holly. Detective Leonard Burr canvassed the area near the bus stop, showing Margaret’s photo to about 200 people. The next morning, Burr rode the same 8:40 AM bus Margaret had taken. Two women recognized her: They both said Margaret got off at High & Mill, exactly where she had been told to. One woman remembered Margaret smiling at her baby when he pulled her hair. Both confirmed her outfit and described her as a small girl with bright blue eyes and many freckles. A second witness said she got off the bus with Margaret and saw her approach a man in a red car, asking if he was John Marshall. The man, later located and cleared, told police he said no, she apologized, and walked away. His car was not a Volkswagen Beetle. This was the last confirmed sighting of Margaret. Police traced the phone number "John Marshall" had given — it was indeed a payphone inside a supermarket in Lumberton, a town beyond Mount Holly. Investigators quickly determined the circumstances were highly suspicious and likely involved kidnapping. Once Margaret’s disappearance hit the news, several parents contacted police to report that a man had recently tried to lure their daughters using fake babysitting job offers. This strongly suggested the crime was premeditated, and that the perpetrator had been calling multiple girls. Margaret was likely not a targeted victim — she was the one who answered the bait. The FBI joined the investigation soon after. Margaret Ellen Fox has never been found, and her case remains open. While the FBI pursued its own investigation, the Burlington Police Department continued running their parallel inquiry. Detectives interviewed every owner of a red Volkswagen Beetle they could find in New Jersey, as well as every man named John Marshall. Several of these individuals briefly became persons of interest. One of the first was a real John Marshall who worked at the supermarket where the payphone used by the caller was located. His connection to the location made him a natural suspect — or an incredibly unlucky man. On the 45th anniversary of Margaret’s disappearance, June 24, 2019, the FBI publicly released a short audio clip from a ransom call made to the Fox family — a call in which the supposed kidnapper demanded $10,000. The clip was posted on the FBI’s website in hopes that someone might recognize the man’s voice, manner of speaking, or the peculiar phrase he used. In the recording, the caller says: “Ten thousand dollars might be a lot of bread, but your daughter’s life is the buttered topping.” After that, Margaret’s mother can be heard asking who is speaking. Only this brief portion of the call has ever been released. Margaret’s parents have been deceased for several years. Her siblings are still alive. What I find strange is that the police took 45 years to release the call made by the supposed kidnapper. But if they released it and asked for help with the identification, it’s possible that they really believe it may have been the kidnapper. What brands are we shopping from for complete/coordinating women’s running outfits?
I’ve been training for my fifth half marathon all summer, and cannot make it through the week without doing an extra load of laundry. I really hate this, and would rather just stock up and buy more running clothes so I can leave laundry for the weekends. I am specifically looking for websites/brands where I can buy: - biker shorts (with pockets for my phone) - spandex pants/leggings (with pockets) - sports bras - t-shirts - long sleeves all in the same color. This way (almost) no matter what the weather is, I can pick and choose which pieces are right for that day. I know I don’t need coordinating outfits, and I have never worn them before in my 20 years of running. But this summer I happened to pick one up and I feel amazing in it. So if I need to buy new clothes anyways, I would rather get ones that I love. The best brand I have found so far is CRZ Yoga. The only problem is they don’t have all five of those things, in one color, in my size right now. I’m going to keep my eye on their website/Amazon stock, but in the meantime I would love more suggestions. I also like what I have from Old Navy and Target, but they don’t have the wide variety pieces I’m looking for. I’m looking to spend ~$30 on most of those items, and would do up to $50 on pants. I’m not entirely opposed to Athleta or Lululemon, but I need at least two outfits (ideally three), and that’s going to be a big bill. Any ideas? [I used the gear tag because it seems best, but I wouldn’t usually consider clothing gear, apologies if I should have picked another one] submitted by /u/clairekat to r/XXRunning [link] [comments]

AITAH, for calling out my husband for changing up the rules in our open marriage?
I (35f) am in an open relationship with my husband (36m). It was over the summer he mentioned it to me. I wouldn't say I was totally for it but it took some getting used to. Now everything is going great but recently my husband keeps changing the rules. Once I started dating Evan (45m) that's when he started acting differently. My husband and I agreed on a dont ask don't tell policy but, keeps pestering me about the details of our relationship. I give him a little here and there but never the explicit stuff. Everything positive I mention about Evan he downplays or critiques. Last week, I planned a date with Evan and asked him to watch the kids. He agreed. He was to get back home by 9 but texted me to say he's doing overtime that night. I was left scrambling for a sitter at the last minute. This isn't the first time he has done this. Luckily this time I got a hold of a sitter but I could not stay as long as I was hoping for. Afterward, he acted as if everything was okay. He began policing me when I left the house and began picking my outfits apart. Expressing concern about how the neighbors would perceive me. To avoid conflict, I started wearing jackets to cover up before heading out. Then came the issue of Evan dropping me off. He worried about the neighbors seeing a strange car pull up at night. This forced me to do lunch dates. It wasn't a bother. I would bring my laptop to Evan's and work at his place. However,I preferred the dinner dates because I got a chance to dress up more. Changing up the times seemed to alleviate some tension but I still feel like I was compromising too much. He didn't even want me to drive to the dates but when Evan pays for an Uber or drops me off it's an issue. It makes no sense. The breaking point was when Evan sent flowers to the house. My husband lost it claiming it's dangerous for a strange man to know our address when we have kids inside. I will say he was right about this. I did drop the ball however, he insisted that I shouldn't bring home any gifts at all going forward, arguing it violated our don't ask don't tell rule. He used to joke about me not getting chivalry in my open relationship and now that I'm getting dates it's a big deal? I asked him if he doesn't take the women he sleeps with on dates and he said no it's strictly sex and none of that "lovey dovey bullsh**" that I'm doing. I confronted my husband about these rules and he just brushed it off like it was nothing. Saying "it's just a respect thing" I was really enjoying this but he's sucking the fun out of it and it just feels highly stressful. submitted by /u/Princessprotect to r/AITAH [link] [comments]

AITAH for not wanting to change my clothes for a 4th time thus ruining our date night?
I am not OOP. OOP is u/Imaginary_Guide8273 on r/AITAH AITAH for not wanting to change my clothes for a 4th time thus ruining our date night? August 4, 2023 So, my husband (37M - let's call him Mark) and I (34F) have been having a rough few years. We got married in the fall of 2019 after being together for 5 years before then, and of course a few months after that the pandemic hit. I had the misfortune of getting a pretty bad case of Covid near the beginning of the pandemic (was hospitalized for two weeks) which turned into long Covid. I wasn't completely disabled but dealt with a lot of the typical symptoms - extreme fatigue, brain fog, reduced immune system generally resulting in several bad infections, etc. I didn't lose my job but did have to take intermittent FMLA which meant a lot of time without pay, and we racked up $20K in debt between the medical bills not covered by insurance and loss of some of my income. Although I tried to be mindful of my eating, I also gained 45 pounds thanks to being on antidepressants, several rounds of steroid medication, and not being able to exercise. Through all this, Mark was incredibly loving and supportive - he never said a bad word about my weight, lack of energy, or inability to contribute financially at the same level as before. Finally, last summer I started to feel a lot better, and most of the long Covid symptoms subsided. I was able to return to work full-time, and had energy to work out again. In the past year, we have paid off all our debt and rebuilt our emergency fund, and I have lost 35 of the 45 pounds I gained (my doctor says this is a good place for me to end up, I was borderline underweight before and am now on the slimmer side of a normal/healthy weight). Mark and I hadn't been having many date nights since we got married between the pandemic, my illness, and then for the past year working to get our finances in order. However, to celebrate my birthday, we decided to have dinner at an upscale bistro and then go see the Barbie movie (he actually suggested the movie). This was last Saturday - my actual birthday wasn't for a few more days but we wanted to go on the weekend. I was excited to dress up as - most of my clothes had gotten baggy and drab during my illness and weight gain but I was finally feeling comfortable in my own skin again. I decided to go full Barbiecore - pink sleeveless dress (fitted at the top and then flared out) and pink kitten heels with a matching bag. (The money for the outfit came from a birthday check from my mom - she insisted that I spend it on "something fun.") When I put on the outfit, I felt really pretty for the first time in a long time...unfortunately and surprisingly, Mark reacted badly to it. He said I looked "slutty" and "attention-seeking" and essentially accused me of trying to get the attention of other men and that I should cover up more. I protested because...first of all...we were going to a restaurant (table for 2) and a movie theater...when exactly was I going to be interacting socially with other men?! Also, the outfit was quite dramatic and striking but it wasn't revealing...sleeveless dresses are pretty normal date night wear for a hot summer day, and it wasn't low-cut (neckline was at the collarbone), and was on the longer side (calf-length). But I didn't want to argue so I put on a black knit cardigan over the dress. Nope, still no dice for Mark, he said it was still attention-seeking. At this point, I really wanted to get going and not miss our reservation, so I gave up on the dress and changed into fitted jeans and a pastel pink tunic top (not fitted). Nope, said Mark, I still looked like I was trying to attract other men. So I threw on a hoodie over the top but then he said I looked sloppy. I was really exasperated by this point and asked if he just wanted to come to my closet to pick an outfit that was acceptable, and he started yelling that I was too stupid to even understand that I was disrespecting him and that I didn't know how to dress myself. Then he said he was going for a drive and going to the movie without me (the tickets were on his phone). He came home after midnight, said he didn't want to talk and that he was going to sleep in the guest room. He has barely spoken to me since. My actual birthday was a couple days ago and he didn't even acknowledge it. I begged him to please talk to me and tell me what was really going on but he said he was still too angry. So, AITAH for not trying to change my clothes yet again before our date for my birthday? I still don't know what he was really upset about or what sort of outfit would have been acceptable. And no, he's never once tried to make rules about what I could wear or commented at all on my clothes except to tell me that I looked nice or that he liked certain colors on me. This really came out of nowhere as far as I can tell. And again he selected the Barbie movie and planned the date so it's not like I was strong-arming him into plans he didn't want. Comment: If my wife asks me ‘does this look ok?’, it’d have to be awful for me to say no. I can’t imagine telling her she looked slutty! She would figure out I thought that because I’d be grinning and making stupid, suggestive jokes! I’d tell him you will wear what you like and if he doesn’t like it, that’s a him problem. Comment: Something deeper is going on. Time to have a serious discussion about where you guys are in this relationship. No matter how much my wife were fighting… it would be a truce on a birthday. Comment: He created a situation where it would be impossible for you to have left the house with him, stormed out to go see the Barbie movie 'alone', and didn't come home until after midnight and slept in the guest room. He's cheating and seeing you looking fire that evening probably triggered some realizations that he can't continue to have his cake and eat it too. Update: Husband demanded I change clothes multiple times for our date night, then stormed out when I refused after the third time August 12, 2023 (Husband was going to take me to dinner and to see the Barbie movie a couple weeks ago, but demanded I change my Barbiecore pink but otherwise modest dress, went through several more iterations of changes that were still not acceptable and then he stormed out, and after that didn't speak to me for close to a week, saying he was too angry to talk about what I did wrong) As for the update - I did end up going to my mom's place for the weekend last weekend and had a nice girls' weekend with my mom and sister. We did see the movie on Saturday (got to wear my original planned outfit - yay!!!), and then got brunch and had a fun salon outing on Sunday. Late afternoon Sunday I texted Mark (my husband) to say I was coming home in a couple hours, and that I hoped he would be ready to talk then - that I would gladly hear him out regarding anything that had been upsetting him, but I really couldn't take the silent treatment anymore as it had been over a week by then. He just texted back "Ok." We did talk after I got home, and...boy, it was a doozy. It turns out Mark has had building resentment for years, since I first got sick with Covid nearly 3 1/2 years ago now. Not so much in the first few months, but when it was clear my illness had turned into long Covid and an ongoing disability, he started to feel very put-upon due to my not being able to generate as much income, not being able to do my share of the housework and cooking, etc. He put up a good front because he knew it wouldn't be fair to take it out on me, especially when he could see I was doing my best to get better and to do what I could on my better days, but ultimately he got very burned out. And then after a year or so...started seeking outlets, as in other women. He said at first it was just basically anonymous online sexting because the pandemic was still raging, but by early last year he had formed an online emotional connection with someone in the area, whom he eventually met in person for a physical affair, someone he is in love with now and still seeing. He said he has been trying to figure out what to do, especially as I have been getting better over the past year, lost most of the weight I gained, got back to fulfilling all my responsibilities at work and home, etc., but when I walked out in my Barbiecore dress, expecting to have a romantic birthday date, he just...couldn't do it. He couldn't go out and pretend to love me and be celebratory when he wanted to be with someone else. So he picked a fight, one I couldn't win. And then yes, when he walked out he did take his AP to dinner and the movie instead. The thing is...I do understand him seeking some kind of an outlet. I was sick for years, and between physical ailments and brain fog I wasn't able to participate consistently in the marriage on any level, not as an equal partner. We'd only been married a few months when I got sick so it's not even like we had a lot of shared history to fall back on. I'm sure he must have felt exhausted, stressed, and lonely, especially as it wasn't certain I would be able to recover at all. I asked if he would consider marriage counseling and recommitting to our marriage, but he said sadly that his "heart had moved on." He did say he was so sorry, that he never meant to fall in love with someone else and was just trying to be less lonely, and that I didn't deserve this, that I especially didn't deserve the way he treated me a couple weeks ago. So, I guess divorce it is. I don't expect it will be very dramatic, we've been talking a lot over the past week (no more silent treatment) to figure out how to divide stuff and to try to make things cordial. In the end, I don't even think he is an AH. Maybe for the way he acted surrounding my birthday, but overall I think he is just a human being who eventually broke down from stress and loneliness. I do wish him well and am also grateful that at least I am healthy again for whatever life has next in store for me. Comment: Your husband is an asshole and has no idea what marriage is actually about. I suffered a major injury 6 months after my wedding that required several surgeries and a long recovery. My husband had to do everything because I couldn’t even walk and was on heavy pain medication for almost a year. I mean, he had to help me shower, help me with personal care, things you do not expect to have to do as as newlyweds. I would cry and apologize to him and he would tell me I was ridiculous and this was the “in sickness or in health” part of our marriage and this was what he signed up for. We had kids after a long period of infertility and I eventually developed chronic conditions that leave me in pain, with brain fog, severe fatigue, and a lot of anxiety and depression. I even broke down at one point and told him this wasn’t fair to him, that he should be able to be with someone that wasn’t broken forever (I even threw out that I wouldn’t hold it against him if he wanted to take on a mistress even though it would absolutely kill me). That man sat me down and told me that this is what marriage is. We take care of each other at our worst and at our best. We’re partners and friends and he would choose me and our life with all of its ups and downs a million times if it meant he could be with me. That is what marriage is. Your husband gave up when shit got hard and I’m sorry but LIFE is hard. When you get married, it should be to the person you want to do the good and the bad with. Do not give your husband a pass because life got hard for a while. ETA: First, thank you for the awards. I really didn’t expect this to get this crazy and the notifications are a little overwhelming. I’ve seen several comments that my marriage seems unbalanced and in one case, that I’m a “taker” and my husband will probably off himself when he can’t meet my standards. First, please consider being kind to people you don’t know because you have no idea what they have going on. Kindness costs you nothing. Second, this was literally two paragraphs about specific topics I thought the OP needed to hear so she didn’t excuse the way her husband treated her. I’ve been married for almost 20 years and it would take pages and pages for me to go through all the things my husband and I have dealt with over the years. I am functional and an active parent and partner in our home. He worked, I took care of our kids including a special needs child and took care of the house, cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc. Of course we argue and disagree, but we made a pact when we got married to never go to bed angry and we sit down and hash shit out. When he lost his beloved grandma within weeks of me miscarrying our first child, I asked him what he needed from me and gave him everything he asked for. When he lost his mom to COVID and couldn’t be with her when she passed, I took over everything because I could see him falling apart at the idea of having to tell everyone and arrange everything. I build him up every time he struggles with imposter syndrome with his job because the man is brilliant and has no idea. Our marriage isn’t a scorecard that we keep tally of who’s doing more. I showed my husband this post and he actually agreed with the person that said a husband doing what he has is setting the bar low because to him, that’s just what marriage is. I’m his to take care of and he’s mine. OOP: Thank you for sharing your story...I am so sorry to hear about your injury and chronic health conditions. But it sounds like you have a magnificent man there. I hope there is someone out there who can love me that much And you're right, anyone who doesn't isn't worthy of being my spouse. The fact that he took HIS MISTRESS ON YOUR DATE would send me over the edge. what a complete and total lack of respect- not even counting all the rest he did, including cheating while you were ill. SMDH I am so sorry OP. I agree with introverted_panda. I suffered a series of health issues over the last 9 years and my husband never once looked to other women because I was sick or disable to the point of being able to do nothing. (Post concussion syndrome, cancer twice, chemo, heart attack) I hope you can find the love you deserve. Another Comment: So in sickness and in health truly meant fucking nothing to him? Vows meant nothing? You got Covid and it fucked you up for a while and he decided best thing to do was to cheat. What a fucking prick. What would he have done if you got cancer? Or some other illness? Is he only happy to stick around with someone if they are 100% healthy all the time? Thank god you never had kids. I’m sorry you’re going through this but fuck that guy. OOP: Yeah, I do see that now that he was not a good person to share my life with. It would have been far worse to share decades together only to have him cheat/leave if I got cancer or just declined due to age. It hurts a lot right now but I do think I dodged a bullet. And as I said above I'm grateful that I'm physically healthy now, plus we paid off all our debt and built up savings over the past year so I'm starting out my single life in a pretty good place all things considered. He took his AP to movie and dinner that you should have been the one going on, after he picked a fight with you and made you feel bad about yourself. Sorry but he has no redeeming qualities. Oh boohoo, he was lonely, while you were checks notes fighting for your life. Your ex ain’t shit. *Editor's Note: is hard to tell if OOP will post again, but the story doesn't seem like it's over, so I marked it ongoing. Let me know if you think differently. Reminder: I am not OOP. Do not go to the original posts and comment on them. submitted by /u/swtogirl to r/BestofRedditorUpdates [link] [comments]

How To Add Visual Interest To Summer Outfits
One question that pops up incredibly often on this sub once high temperatures hit is how to make warm weather wear looks…interesting. The disconnect seems to occur because for fall/winter dressing, there is more texture and more layering to play with, so it’s easier to create an “outfit” rather than just “clothes”. When you’re only wearing one layer, that becomes more difficult and the outfit you’re trying to put together can leave something to be desired, as it’s plain and stripped back. But you don’t have to layer 3 types of clothes in order to maintain style going into the warmer months. Warm weather has endless opportunities for fashionable dressing, and in the glorious absence of a big coat that covers up all your hard work, you’re free to show off an outfit that plays with colors, proportions, textures, patterns, or interesting accessories. I know summer is technically on its way out, but a lot of us still have at least a month or two of hot weather to go, so let’s take a look at putting together some cool summer outfits. Color Perhaps more than anything else, warm weather is an excellent opportunity to enjoy color. While no one’s stopping you from wearing colorful clothes in the winter, it’s clear that cold weather tends to be a sad mass of black - mostly for practical reasons. But when the sun is shining and there are no coats covering up your outfit, you can bring out the yellows, the pinks, the greens - and they can be the key to taking your attire from just “clothes” to an “outfit”. color blocking Color blocking is a tried and true method to add visual interest. Color in an outfit always brings it up a step, but color blocking requires more skill, and more attention paid to silhouette, as well as color pairings. You can opt for colors opposite on the color wheel, or just colors that feel right to you - there are no rules, as long as you love the result. color blocking 1 color blocking 2 color blocking 3 color blocking 4 color blocking 5 pop of color Opting for just a pop of color can be a great way to make your outfit more fun, but without the difficulty of pairing colors together. The easiest way to do it is to add a colorful bag to an otherwise neutral outfit. A lavender bag can give a little contrast to a basic white dress and elevate it to an outfit. Especially if you’re also pairing it with a colorful pair of shoes. Matching shoes are fine, but an even more interesting choice is a pair of shoes in a complementary color. pop of color 1 pop of color 2 pop of color 3 pop of color 4 pop of color 5 monochrome Probably a lot of us have worn all-black before, but how many have tried the same in a different color? What is boring and safe in black becomes infinitely more stylish and interesting in a bold color that goes great with a tan. Think about an all pink outfit and what a statement it makes. It’s still really easy to put together - you’re only using one color - and yet, it’s anything but boring. monochrome 1 monochrome 2 monochrome 3 tonal dressing Pairing colors together can be tricky and it’s often a barrier of entry to fashion for the regular person. But there are easy, somewhat prescriptive ways to do it, like tonal dressing. Not quite monochrome, tonal dressing is more about picking different shades of the same base color or color palette. Adjacent colors, if you will. Both a step above monochrome, and easier than finding identical shades to match, tonal dressing is more visually exciting than a monochromatic outfit, while still being a subtle way to do color. tonal 1 tonal 2 tonal 3 tonal 4 tonal 5 Pattern Perhaps an obvious suggestion, pattern pulls an outfit right out of its boring, solid color nothingness and gives it purpose, it gives it oomph, it gives it visual interest. Where things really get interesting is when you pattern match - or clash. But that’s a somewhat “advanced” lesson. For now, even something as simple as choosing a floral skirt instead of a solid colored one can make your clothes an “outfit”. floral Yes, yes, florals for spring are not groundbreaking. But we have to walk before we can run. Florals are common, and they’re easy. A very seasonally-appropriate pattern for spring-summer, it adds a touch of whimsy and femininity to an otherwise simple outfit. floral 1 floral 2 floral 3 floral 4 floral 5 polka dots & stripes Polka dots and stripes are other classic patterns you can’t really go wrong with. They typically still come in neutral colors, for the most part, but you can also find them in more fun colors if you don’t want to stick to boring black and white. polka dot stripe 1 polka dot stripe 2 polka dot stripe 3 polka dot stripe 4 polka dot stripe 5 abstract Then, of course, we’ve got the cooler, more modern abstract prints. Paint splotches, random shapes, approximations of faces - anything goes. Why wear a basic white shirt, when you can wear an interesting one? abstract 1 abstract 2 abstract 3 abstract 4 abstract 5 gingham Gingham is a classic summer staple. Casual and light, it’s a quintessential “picnic” print. Black and white gingham is a good neutral option, but if you want something more fun, any pastel color + white is very summery while still maintaining visual interest. gingham 1 gingham 2 gingham 3 gingham 4 gingham 5 pattern clashing Of course, the ultimate way to wear pattern is to clash it against more pattern. A higher difficulty task, but with a big visual reward, pattern clashing can make even the most boring, basic outfit look elevated. clashing 1 clashing 2 clashing 3 clashing 4 clashing 5 Texture When you’ve not got many pieces to work with for an outfit, those pieces have to work much harder to be interesting, to stand out, to be “worthy”. In comes texture. An outfit that’s cotton from top to bottom is not much of an outfit. It’s plain, flat, and boring. Mixing silk and organza, however, becomes an event. linen/cotton Linen and cotton are the fabrics of choice for many during the summer. It’s easy to see why - they keep you cool, they feel nice, and they’re easy to find on the highstreet at decent prices. Plus, they tend to last - if slightly discolored from the sun. A good basis that you can add to. linen cotton 1 linen cotton 2 linen cotton 3 sheer (tulle, gauze, organza) Sheer is having a huge moment, and now is the time to take full advantage. Despite it being mainly synthetic fabrics, the thinness, sheerness, volume and lightweight quality of these fabrics means they can be easily worn during the height of summer without fear of heatstroke. Beautiful, diaphanous, and eminently special, a sheer element can bring the whimsy you need for a wedding outfit, the femininity to a date outfit, or that special je n’est ce quoi to a simple brunch outfit. sheer 1 sheer 2 sheer 3 sheer 4 sheer 5 silk Silk is in no way as fanciful as it’s touted to be, and it has the excellent advantage of being a great light-weight option for hot weather. Especially if you need something special or formal, there’s nothing better than silk. It looks amazing, it’s cool, and it packs small. silk 1 silk 2 silk 3 silk 4 silk 5 seersucker A quintessential summer fabric if there ever was one, seersucker is great for a variety of clothes. Since it’s so light, it allows you to wear more formal or covered up garments, such as an elegant seersucker suit that would be hot in any other fabric. seersucker 1 seersucker 2 muslin With a slightly “crinkled” texture, muslin is casual in nature, and it brings visual interest all on its own. Sure, it may not be ideal for a sleek outfit, but it’s perfect for a billowy sleeveless dress when it’s too hot to put anything else on, but you still want it to look ~interesting~. muslin 1 muslin 2 muslin 3 Proportions & silhouette My personal favorite, playing with proportion and silhouette is a subtle and sophisticated way to create An Outfit if you’re not into accessorizing or it’s too hot to pile on the necklaces. Structural and sleek, this type of outfit allows shapes to speak for themselves and become the main event, with minimal other distractions. loose on loose There is no better season to do loose on loose than summer, especially if you prefer not to show skin. As cute as tight dresses are, this is not the time to pull them out. Instead, a pair of cropped wide leg pants can work surprisingly well with a boxy shirt with billowy sleeves. The silhouette is interesting on its own, you don’t have fabric touching your skin, and you’re not getting sunburned. All in all, 10/10 summer outfit. loose 1 loose 2 loose 3 loose 4 loose 5 tight on loose That isn’t to say that we can’t do tight + loose in hot weather, you just have to be more strategic about it. It’s still a visually interesting silhouette, but in the summer, the tight element should be the top, paired with a looser skirt or pair of pants. A bodycon tanktop or crop top with a pair of high-waisted linen shorts is as elegant as it is cooling. tight 1 tight 2 tight 3 tight 4 tight 5 structural/architectural detailing Sometimes, a single piece with strong architectural detailing can bring all the pizzazz you need. In recent years, with the ushering in of maximalist tendencies, there’s been no shortage of interesting structural details on summer clothes. A short, but wonderfully voluminous dress is both a statement and a clever way to stay cool. Same with very wide pants, a long column silhouette, intense pleating on a skirt, or an interesting neckline. Unexpected accessories like very chunky shoes paired with a very short dress or a very small purse with a voluminous outfit can also provide that extra kick. structural 1 structural 2 structural 3 structural 4 structural 5 Interesting details Seemingly small details can go a long way in elevating a piece, so don’t discount the power that beading can have, straps, buckles, or even buttons. Some of these details will work better for evening than daytime, but it entire depends on your style, the type of embellishment, and the occasion. Daytime sequins are acceptable outside of Vegas now, I’m just saying. embellishment Simple shapes can still look amazing, if you add a little bling. The addition of sequins, rhinestones, or intricate beading can turn a forgettable dress into something special. The best part is that this can be DIY-ed, especially if you have a dress you’re a little tired of or that is a tad boring. You can be as restrained or as crazy as you want with your embellishments. Pearl straps, bejeweled necklines, or full sequinned pieces - they’re always a show-stopper. embellishment 1 embellishment 2 embellishment 3 straps With enough sunscreen, or a disregard for unconventional tan lines, something as simple as strap placement can make an outfit more interesting. Very strappy tops are very in right now, as are tops and dresses with open backs with special detailing, like tie-backs, bows, or cut-outs in different shapes. straps 1 straps 2 straps 3 buckles, knots, pleating, buttons Other distinct visual details that can also be utilitarian also help draw the eye, add some contrast, and zuzh up your outfit. Whether it’s a simple row of contrasting buttons, some statement hardware in the form of a special belt buckle, or gorgeous pleating, these details can say a lot without trying too hard. details 1 details 2 details 3 details 4 details 5 Accessories Sometimes, the easiest way to do it is just to add accessories. It requires less fussing, and you don’t have to think as much about them. The biggest bonus here is that accessories rarely make you hotter, but they can still have a huge visual impact and totally “make” an outfit. textured/colorful/big or small bag A bag should never be an afterthought, but that’s especially important to remember when putting together summer outfits. Because you have fewer elements to play with, each of them becomes more important and “weighs” more in the overall structure of your look. A very big or very small bag is a tried and true way to bring the unexpected, but you can also achieve a similar effect if you pick a bag that is colorful, or that’s textured. Consider giving your black leather bags a rest, and instead, enjoying wicker baskets, wooden bags, braided bags, and other unique textures or shapes. Summer is the time for the novelty bag to shine. bag 1 bag 2 bag 3 bag 4 bag 5 interesting shoes - size, color, heel shape, embellishments Of course, shoes are also essential. Not just because you literally cannot create an outfit without them, but because they can also weigh heavily in the balance of your outfit. Luckily for us, statement shoes are in, and there’s plenty to play with in terms of features. Chunky shoes are du jour, but there are also very strappy shoes out there, interesting heel shapes, high platforms, shiny embellishments, and shockingly neon colors. shoes 1 shoes 2 shoes 3 shoes 4 shoes 5 hats If you’ve ever wished you could wear hats, but were afraid you’d look like an asshole, now is your time. You have plausible deniability, hats are not just stylish, but they’re useful, or even necessary, if you live somewhere where the sun is particularly oppressive. Shout out to Australia, the skin cancer capital of the world. A straw hat can complete an outfit or push it towards a certain vibe. Chic Gondolier with a breton tee and black shorts? Add a hat. Jungle Adventurer dressed head to toe in new-wave Banana Republic? Add a hat. Baptist Church Lady-core with a ruffly floral dress? Add a hat. hats 1 hats 2 hats 3 Third Piece The third piece is, of course, a basic “rule” for outfit creation, but hot weather makes it just a little bit more difficult, when even one layer of clothing feels like too much to bear. Thankfully, you can “cheat” and still add your third piece, but without adding extra bulk on top of an outfit you’re already overheating in. linen blazer For evenings and A/C environments, a linen blazer is very versatile and makes almost any outfit better. It works great with little dresses, shorts, wide leg linen pants - it flatters elegant outfits and beautifully contrasts more casual ones. You really can’t go wrong, and you also can’t overheat. blazer 1 blazer 2 blazer 3 vests A more summer-y version of the blazer, the vest is not just very fashionable at the moment, it’s also the perfect layering piece. Adding minimal bulk, but maximum visual interest, a vest can be paired with anything, from dresses to shirts & shorts, to wearing it by itself as a top. The vest + shorts or vest + pleated pants combo reigns supreme for the spring/summer season; it’s sophisticated, a little masculine, and a nice departure from typical summer outfits. vest 1 vest 2 vest 3 fanny pack/cross body Any bag can make a good third piece, as we’ve discussed, but a fanny pack worn crossbody is more visible, in many ways, it’s very cool, and it can be very flattering. Worn on top of a straighter, looser, or more billowy top or dress, it creates some necessary shaping, while still maintaining the casual vibe. Wear it in a contrasting color or interesting texture for maximum effect. pack 1 pack 2 pack 3 pack 4 maximalist jewelry Jewelry may be the easy way out, but one cannot deny the effect of a truly big-ass pair of earrings with an otherwise simple outfit. Necklaces, rings, and bracelets are not to be ignored, and can also work beautifully to accent an outfit or your great tan, but earrings have the advantage of not touching your skin and they also bring attention to your face, and look great with your hair up - a must, in hot weather. jewelry 1 jewelry 2 jewelry 3 jewelry 4 jewelry 5 What's the bottom line? Summer dressing can be just as fun as dressing for cooler weather, just in a different way. Layering is not the only way to create something that feels like An Outfit, and sophistication and visual interest are completely achievable in hot weather, even while remaining cool. The examples shown here aren’t meant to be a rulebook to follow, but serve more as inspiration for your own wardrobe and can hopefully give you some ideas on ways to fall in love with your summer wardrobe. Your wardrobe is outdated. What now? Step 1 - Skinny jeans
Do you feel stale? Is your wardrobe a little tired? Are the fashionable styles increasingly different from your own wardrobe? Is the last time you went shopping 10 years ago? Do you find yourself uttering the phrase “cold dead hands” in the same sentence as “skinny jeans”? You might be a Millennial with an outdated wardrobe. It’s not a sin - if you still feel fun, fresh, and comfortable in your wardrobe, that’s cool, and feel free to click away. No one’s taking away your skinny jeans. If, however, you’re wondering how to update your wardrobe, make it feel a little fresher, and look more current, then you’re in the right place. The important thing to know is that a wardrobe update doesn’t mean that you need to throw away all your clothes and start over - unless that’s what you desire. You can update some key pieces and restyle some old ones in order to refresh your wardrobe and keep up with the times. The other thing to keep in mind is that wanting to be more current, and updating your wardrobe doesn’t mean you need to dress like a teenager. Nor does wanting a current wardrobe mean you’re desperately trying to look 20. It’s about being interested in style and wanting to remain current, stylish, and even - god forbid - trendy. Being interested in fashion and wanting to look modern isn’t just for the kids. Step 1 - Skinny jeans We all know why you’re here, skinny jeans and your cold dead hands. Skinny jeans have become somewhat of a security blanket for a lot of people. It was the dominant silhouette for so long, and a lot of our wardrobes have been created around that. However, just like your college boyfriend, just because it’s comfortable and you met them when you were 20, it doesn’t mean you’re married to them until you die. Keeping your skinnies Of course, no one is forcing anyone to give up their skinny jeans. Contrary to popular belief, the trend police will not break into your house to take them away, and your cold dead hands are safe, they needn’t be deployed. If you’re not going to replace them, then you can use a different styling approach. Styling them the same way you have been for 15 years will inevitably feel stale and old-fashioned. But that can be remedied by making some changes and tweaking other elements in your wardrobe. If you’re wearing skinny jeans, Don’t do this: These are examples that together create looks that can feel a little stale, old-fashioned, and less than fresh. Just like skinny jeans, it doesn’t mean that you have to throw away these things, but maybe don’t style them together, in the exact same way you did in 2010. 1 Low/mid waist Example: low rise look Well, what’s wrong with low/mid-rise? And wait, isn’t low rise coming back in style? Yes, it is. Just not in skinny jeans. When the pants style changes (every 15 to 20 years), that usually brings a change in silhouette. In this case, we have moved from skinny bottom, oversized top, to skinny top, oversized bottom. In that case, wearing a slim, cropped shirt and low-rise, wide-leg pants is an outfit with a nice balance, that is meant to emphasize the midriff. Wearing the same cropped outfit with low-rise skinny jeans throws off the visual balance and just ends up looking like you’ve outgrown your clothes because both elements are tight. Seeing as tucking a shirt in or wearing a more cropped, boxy top is currently in style, that also poses a problem with mid or low rises, because they are very awkward to tuck into. Once again, it disrupts the proportions and the visual balance. Tucking into low or mid rise skinny pants forces a 50/50 proportion that is both unnatural and not out of left field enough to be avant-garde. It’s just awkward. 2 Tunics/long sweaters Example: tunic top look Again, an issue of silhouette. Wearing skinny jeans with a tunic is probably your comfort zone, and while there’s nothing wrong with that, it’s not going to read as modern or stylish. If that’s your goal, then I’d avoid pairing skinnies with any kind of long top. “Skinny jeans and a nice top” can still be your go-to, but consider updating the style of the top. A top with more structure and more waist emphasis will read more modern than a long, loose, shapeless top. If you’re still keen on covering the derriere, then a boxy, oversized sweater or top with structure is a fresher alternative. 3 Thin long cardigans Example: look with long cardigan Cardigans made out of thin materials have never been especially flattering, because they tend to cling. It also makes it difficult to layer underneath them. The slimmer and thinner the cardigan, the bulkier the layers under it. A long, unstructured cardigan over skinny jeans is also an outdated silhouette. There are still duster cardigans out there, but they’re heavier, chunkier, and a little more oversized, occasionally with a tie waist. They allow layering and look more structured and less boho. 4 Ballet flats Example: ballet flat outfit Grab your tutus, ballet flats are actually coming back into fashion. But paired with skinny jeans, the look is straight out of 2010. Thin soles and light, “nothing”-type shoes are definitely not the freshest style (yes, that includes Rothys, but that’s a conversation for next time), but they can still be passable with a more modern pants cut - preferably something straight or wide leg, and cropped. The new ballet flats are also more dance-inspired, with specific detailing, so the round toe Tory Burch flats from 2008 are not exactly cutting edge. 5 Low ankle boots Example: low ankle boots outfit Like ballet flats, the time of low ankle boots has come and gone. Once, skinny jeans and ankle boots were the power couple of the early 2010s, now it’s just what middle-aged moms wear out to date night at Cheesecake Factory. And there’s nothing wrong with any of that! But the ankle boot has also had a makeover - the shaft is higher, the heel is thicker, and the sole is chunkier. The Cheesecake Factory regulars won’t know what hit them. 6 Tight knee high/OTK boots Example: OTK boots look I know skinny jeans and slim over the knee boots go together like peanut butter and jelly. And they did - for years and years. Which is precisely why that particular combination will read as dated. You can still keep both, just change up the styling, and don’t pair them together. Knee high boots are back in style, but instead of a 2010s slim riding boot, it’s a wider, more generous cut with a chunkier sole. The OTK boots can also still be worn, but rather with a mini skirt/dress, a slim midi skirt, or a pair of winter-weight shorts, like leather or tweed. 7 Graphic tees Example: graphic t-shirt look If anything in your house or wardrobe says “Live, Laugh, Love”, I urge you to get rid of it immediately. Same with any saying related to coffee or the word “vibe”. You’ll thank me later. Now, I’m not saying you can’t wear graphic t-shirts with skinny jeans. I’m saying the type of graphic t-shirt has changed a lot over the last 15 years. The slim fit, tiny sleeve crew neck t-shirts with flowery Etsy font is dead, you can downgrade it to the shirts you wear when you’re cleaning or painting. So is the thin, loose, cropped, 80s t-shirt that says “Bridesmaid”. Instead, an oversized and boxy, OR straight fit t-shirt is the more modern and current option. Neither long nor short, neither wide nor tight, a comfortably loose t-shirt with a regular short sleeve is a perfect basic, non-offensive choice for any woman of any age. If it has to have a graphic, make it a band tee. Not something that says “Namaste”. 8 Big slouchy bags Example: big purse outfit The LV Neverfull is a practical bag, I know, but wearing it with cropped skinny jeans and ballet flats looks like you’re cosplaying Christian Girl Autumn 10 years too late. A canvas tote bag is a more modern choice, or a sleek leather backpack. You’ve got both the comfort and the style. For smaller bags and needs, an uncertain-shaped cross-body is also going to date your outfit. Try to be more intentional with the bag choice and shape. Something more structured, with a top handle (as well as a cross body strap) is a fresher choice. Or a small, perhaps embellished, backpack. Do this instead: I would like to first preface this by saying that you do not have to do ALL of these. These are also not mandates. They’re options. I picked a few different categories where updating other elements of your outfit can make skinny jeans feel less stale in 2023, something for everyone. 1 High waist Example: high-waisted look Updating the rise is the easiest way to bring your skinnies into 2023. A higher rise gives you some new and modern styling options, including tucking tops into your jeans or wearing tops that are more cropped - t-shirts, shirts, blouses, hoodies, jackets - they all look better with a higher rise to balance out the silhouette. High waisted jeans make your legs look longer, they emphasize the waist, and are comfortable to sit in, since the waist should hit at your natural waist, above your stomach, and not cutting into it. 2 Full length hems Example: full length skinnies outfit Another style element that betrays the age of your skinny jeans is that outdated, scrunched or cropped look. This may very well be a matter of opinion, but cropped skinny jeans don’t work as well as other cropped styles. Because they’re so tight, it visually strangles your calf instead of highlighting the ankle and has the opposite effect. The overly long, scrunched look is not just outdated, it’s a sign your jeans don’t fit well. Petites, hem your skinny jeans - or buy the cropped ones as full length). Full length skinnies have a more streamlined look and work better with any type of shoe. 3 Belts Example: belted skinnies look A high rise goes great with a belt, both to highlight your waist - if that’s the look you’re after - and to serve as an extra accessory and styling device. Belting your jeans can tie in your shoes or bag in a nice way, or it can visually break up a fit that needs a little extra something-something. Be advised that belting a pair of pants that do not sit at your waist will emphasize your hips or stomach, so if you’re not keen on making that area seem wider, then avoid belting and/or tucking into mid or low rise bottoms. 4 Cropped cardigans Example: boxy cardi look It’s time to let go of this weird notion that a cropped silhouette is only for 15 year-olds. A cropped top, shirt, cardigan, jacket, etc. is simply a change in silhouette and proportion and it does not - I repeat, it does not mean that you’re necessarily showing off your midriff or that it’s a strictly “youthful” style. The key to incorporating a cropped element is to pair it with high rise bottoms - in this case, your skinnies. Styling them with an opposite style cardigan - short and bulky, instead of long and thin - automatically freshens up the look and brings them into 2023. High rise + crop shirt is an excellent way to emphasize the waist or create an hourglass or pear silhouette. Like a belt, the “break” in the outfit can be a much needed styling element to take the outfit from basic to stylish. 5 Oversized blazers Example: oversized blazer outfit Raise your hand if you wore skinny jeans, low cut ankle boots and a blazer in 2010. I’m not knocking it, it’s a good look, but when worn all together, it dates you. But you can update the look by swapping out the blazer with a more current, oversized style. An oversized blazer vs. a shorter, slimmer fit one from the 2010s makes great contrast with the tightness of the pants and it gives the outfit a cooler, slightly masculine edge. While an all-tight outfit can look a little try-hard, an oversized element makes it a little cooler and more modern. 6 Tucked in tops Example: tucked in look Tucking is one of my favorite styling choices and I can’t find much fault with it. In fact, it may very well make skinny jeans look modern. Like belts and crop tops, tucking in a shirt achieves the same waist emphasis we’re going for and it pulls away from the outdated lowrise + muffin top + long shirt look of the 2010s. 7 Chunky shoes Example: platform boots look Shoes can totally transform an outfit, including taking it from 2013 to 2023. No one’s trying to take away your heeled ankle boots, but consider pairing those with a cropped straight leg instead, and swap them out for a pair of chunky loafers or platform boot in a skinny jean outfit. Same with ballet flats, let’s mix and match trends and decades instead of doing The Greatest Hits of 2011 from head to toe. 8 Voluminous tops Example: voluminous top outfit So we said no long tops - what do we do for “nice” tops, instead? There are a few different details that make for a modern top. Volume is one of the key words, so a top that is short and boxy OR that has voluminous sleeves OR a voluminous collar, etc. Very feminine corset tops are also very popular, with or without sleeves or straps. Square necklines are extremely flattering on everyone and can be the one feature on an otherwise completely basic top that can have long sleeves or be tucked into the pants, etc. As for sweaters, bulky wins over slim fitting for a modern look. Alternatives to skinny jeans If you’re ready to move on and see what else is out there, then a world of new styles awaits you. You’ll be surprised at how much variety and excitement you can add to your wardrobe with one simple jean style swap. The beautiful thing about transitional periods in fashion is that there’s something for everybody. There is no primary cut or style, so you can find anything. Slim, baggy, wide leg, bell bottoms, bootcuts, high rise, low, or mid, it’s all out there, and you can make any of them work for you. Straight leg jeans A good alternative are straight leg jeans and pants - the shape is not a huge departure from your usual, while still being more modern. Straight leg jeans still allow for some of your longer tops to be worn without looking baggy from top to bottom, you can still wear them with higher boots if you want, and they’re not very adventurous, which means they’re never the focus of the outfit itself. They can play it safe and be quietly understated to support other, more interesting design elements, whether it’s a big sleeve, a bold color, a collar, a ruffle, interesting buttons, or other detailing on your top, coat, or accessories. This style can still be successfully worn with a boxier or longer sweater, for example, without looking outdated. Example: 1. straight leg 1 2. straight leg 2 3. straight leg 3 4. straight leg 4 5. straight leg 5 Mom jeans Mom jeans are the cut that largely replaced skinny jeans back in 2015-2016. Favored because they’re very high waisted, with more room in the hips, and a flattering, conical shape, they are as comfortable as they are durable, owing to their rigid, 100% cotton fabric. However, because of the lack of elastane in their composition, mom jeans are trickier to size, so a few shopping trips may be necessary. For skinny jeans wearers, the familiar thing with mom jeans is that they retain the high waist, and you’re still showing off your shoes, as they’re closely cut around the ankle, and usually a little cropped. Like straight leg jeans, an oversized, untucked top can still look good and fresh with this cut because of the conical shape. They slim down towards the ankle, giving the leg a little shape that contrasts with the baggy top, if you don’t want to go for a loose-on-loose silhouette. Example: 1. mom jeans 1 2. mom jeans 2 3. mom jeans 3 4. mom jeans 4 5. mom jeans 5 Wide leg jeans The other prominent cut that arose in the meantime are wide leg jeans, which are very much a total departure from skinny jeans, in terms of shape and style. However, they have become extremely popular, even among older Millennials, because they’re very comfortable. High waisted, with a lot of room in the hips and leg, wide leg jeans allow for free movement and completely eliminate the constricted feeling skinny jeans can sometimes be guilty of. Usually cropped, they still allow you to show off your shoes, and are surprisingly versatile. They can be successfully worn with boots, sandals, loafers, birks, heels, or flats - they go with pretty much anything. Personally, I prefer them with boots. Example: 1. wide leg jeans 1 2. wide leg jeans 2 3. wide leg jeans 3 4. wide leg jeans 4 5. wide leg jeans 5 Flared jeans However, you can also obtain some of the same effects as skinnies with bootcut or flared pants. When you think about it, flared pants aren’t all that different. Yes, the flare at the bottom is a change in silhouette and it’s more visual interest than you’re used to having with pants. However, the top is very much still the same fit as skinny jeans, if what you’re concerned about is losing a “flattering” shape around your waist/butt/thighs. Flares tend to be the same skinny shape on top, and still have elastane. The only thing you’re trading in is the way you’re pairing your shoes. The longer hems visually elongate the legs, but they do usually cover the shoes, so more thought will need to be put into that. Heels work best paired with flared pants, but with the chunky, platform styles of today, flats can also be worn successfully with bootcut and flared, and wide leg pants, even without dragging and stepping on your hems. Example: 1. flared jeans 1 2. flared jeans 2 3. flared jeans 3 4. flared jeans 4 5. flared jeans 5 I’d also like to make a note that hair, makeup, and general styling (like jewelry) also make a big impact in the way outfits are perceived. With a modern, intentional haircut, any outfit automatically reads are more stylish, instead of just the first thing you grabbed that looked like pants. Makeup plays an equally big role. Overplucked eyebrows made an entire generation of women look like they were stuck in the past, as does harsh contouring, and other major elements of hair and makeup, like thick, blocky eyebrows. The Kate Gosselin haircut, the too-light blonde hair curled with a 2-inch barrel curling iron that every single woman on Pinterest has, the ring finger painted in a different color than all the others. Think of those ladies who wore permed hair and blue eyeshadow into the 90s and 00s. You don’t want to be the 2023 version of that lady - unless you do it extremely well and intentional for the camp factor. If you found this helpful, I’m interested in creating more spotlight posts on specific items that can be updated. We could just do bigger categories - shoes, outerwear, dresses, etc. or we could focus on one specific item people are finding particularly difficult to part with, but would like to freshen up. "Is your husband inside? Do you want me to change my clothes?"
Edit: A) sorry for the typos... I'm on mobile and didn't catch all of the spelling errors. B) several people have suggested that she may have been asking out of respect for me (so as not to make me jealous, uncomfortable, etc) rather than concern for my husband. It's possible. That didn't initially cross my mind, as it's not something I've ever personally cared about, but is possible that her mind was focusing more on me than on my husband. If that is the case, I'm flattered that she was being considerate towards me... However, that still breaks my heart, a little bit... No matter her reasons, her clothing shouldn't have been a worry to her. She shouldn't have to worry that a man is going to objectify her OR that a woman is going to assume her motives are nefarious, based off of her clothes. Her clothing shouldn't have been a concern, in the 1st place. C) to everyone who's shared their own experiences with pervy and/or jealous people critiquing their fashion, I'm sorry you've dealt with that. You certainly didn't deserve it. ----------------------------‐----------------------------------------------------- So, this happened a bit ago, but has been on my mind for a while now... Over the last few years, I've become really close with a coworker. She's awesome. A chosen sister. A kindred spirit. I genuinely love hanging out with her. Anyway, the 1st time I invited her over, we just planned to have some coffee and relax. She texted me when she parked, and I went out to get her (the complex that I lived in was huge and kind of confusing if you weren't familiar with the area). She was standing at her car, and was wearing a really cute summer outfit. A pair of loose and flowey pants, and a belly shirt that showed a bit of her midriff... It was 116 ゚F outside, and I didn't think twice about her clothes. As she locked the car, she asked if my husband was inside. After I said yes, she asked "Do you want me to change my clothes?" I was completely taken aback... "What?! No. Why? Wear whatever makes you feel comfortable." She seemed relieved. Now... My husband isn't the type to ogle at women. Nor is he the type that would make inappropriate comments... But, even if he was that type, it would be entirely on him. Not her. If he acted that way, I'd be pissed at him. Not at her. It broke my heart, a little bit, that she even felt the need to ask that, in the 1st place... I don't know if anyone here needs to hear this, but if you do, I want to tell you what I told her: You are not responsible for the things that other people say and do. Regardless of the clothes that you're wearing. It is 110% okay to dress comfortably while simultaneously expecting respect. The clothes that you wear do not change the personalities around you. If someone sees your clothing as an excuse to be awful towards you, it is because they are awful people, NOT because of what you're wearing! Never let anyone tell you otherwise. submitted by /u/TeaHC16 to r/TwoXChromosomes [link] [comments]

AITA for saying I prefer to dress modestly?
I am a woman 35F and I work in a very male dominated industry. I am not a tomboy or "one of the guys", I have "feminine" hobbies and interests like knitting, baking etc but I also like some "masculine" hobbies as well- I do MMA, I dabble in blacksmithing. Anyway, I dress pretty modestly at work. There's no particular reason for it but I usually wear a button down shirt, slacks/trousers and a cardigan- like this even with bright colours https://www.puttingmetogether.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Yellow-Sweater-over-plaid-top-with-green-pants-business-casual-outfit-front-1080x1620.jpg Even in summer, I wear this but with a lighter material shirt and a lighter cardigan. About a year ago, another woman joined our firm and she's more Sex in the City type fashion, very chic, feminine and put together but that means she often wears see through blouses (with a singlet underneath), lower cut tops and skirts of varying lengths. I was doing some online shopping during my lunch break the other day in the kitchen area when she saw and sat down next to me to chat. She kept telling me to get tops and skirts that are not in my comfort zone and she kept asking why when I said "it's not me". Finally I had to say, I like to dress modestly. I have no idea how I could word that better but I felt backed into a corner. She got offended and I said that I had no issue with what she wore but I preferred to be more covered up because it made me comfortable. She's now extremely cold and told me I was "shaming" women in this industry who didn't want to lose their femininity in a male dominated field. I get that but I'm not super girly anyway, I dress for my comfort. AITA here? submitted by /u/Healthy-Working to r/AmItheAsshole [link] [comments]

Women in male-dominated, casual working environments, what are your summer work outfits?
I'm going to be a software engineer intern this summer and I have no idea what clothes to bring! I have a more girly style and I know it's going to be hot in California. Would love to hear what y'all wear :) submitted by /u/aesthetic-y to r/AskWomen [link] [comments]
