I am interested in getting started with tai chi
long story short: I did karate and muay Thai for years, and I greatly enjoyed the elegance of kata. i need to build back my endurance (i have been through some very hard times) so i can eventually do karate again, but not anytime soon. I saw this, and this is exactly the sort of thing i would like to learn: https://m.youtube.com/shorts/tWvvOAsU9Bs https://m.youtube.com/shorts/y51XBXrQG_o I need easy entry points that are like the two videos above, and I can’t go to a tai chi place right now, as much as I would like it’s not in the cards, so I want to self train. I know it’s not ideal, but I really want to do it. what do you recommend me ? submitted by /u/Peakychu6 to r/taichi [link] [comments]

Has Tai chi actually changed anyone's life?
I tried it today and it surprised me how I felt the blood moving in my body. However it is not a common exercise among young people, people are usually suggesting weights, pilates and other harder forms of exercise. submitted by /u/Fickle-Course to r/NoStupidQuestions [link] [comments]

I know this sounds corny as shit but y'all gotta try tai chi.
I know it sounds lame as hell but hear me out. my VA doc told me to try it and they have free classes at my VA. I'm sitting at an 80% rating with bulging discs, vertebrae that fused together on their own, torn both rotator cuffs, torn labrum in my hips, fucked up knees and ankles, and plantar fasciitis. I did two half marathons while I was active duty with the last one being 10 years ago, and I'm 20lbs heavier than when I got out. This time last year if I'd have attempted a 5k I would have been in excruciating pain for the next few days and barely be able to walk. My baseline was not being able to stand for more than 20 min at a time. I been doing this shit a year and decided to fafo and sign up for a 5k with zero practice. I definitely would not pass the pft with my finish time but I finished under 45 min and I am NOT IN PAIN. My knee got tight during it and I just walked it off and changed my socks and it's fine. Again I know how corny this shit sounds but I wanted to share this with y'all because I know a lot of y'all go through life with chronic pain. I still have pain to be fair but it's manageable enough now that I can enjoy life again and work without the pain being a distraction. I care about you bros. submitted by /u/NemoHobbits to r/USMC [link] [comments]

What do you think beginners misunderstand most about Tai Chi?
Over time, reading discussions and listening to practitioners, I’ve noticed a recurring theme. Many beginners seem to approach Tai Chi as something to memorize — long sequences, precise choreography, specific sensations. But from what I’ve observed, the shift often happens somewhere else. In balance. In structure. In simply learning how to stand and move without tension. I’m curious: From your experience, what do beginners tend to misunderstand most when they start? Is it the purpose of the practice? The pace? The internal aspect? Would really appreciate hearing different perspectives. submitted by /u/FishingTrue1851 to r/SeniorFitness [link] [comments]

Is there any legitimate way to do tai-chi at home or is it always best to go to classes?
I keep seeing all these ridiculous `get ripped by doing chair exercises' AI tai-chi videos everywhere. Obviously fake but it sparked an interest. So is there a legitimate way to do tai-chi in your home from using videos or some other way? Any recommendations? submitted by /u/Terrible-Group-9602 to r/taichi [link] [comments]

Has anyone tried tai chi and experienced any significant benefits from it?
Obviously it isn't a martial art useful for combat, but I often see people say it's useful for improving strength, flexibility, and balance. So those of you who have tried it in the past, is it helpful? And if you train an actual combat sport/martial art, has tai chi helped you in your other disciplines? How so? If you have any comments or experience with tai chi, I'd love to hear it! Also, would anyone be willing to do this in public? Because some of the poses look strange 😂 respectfully Edit: I didn't realize tai chi started as a genuine form of combat. My only experience with it is the movements. So when I ask about effectiveness, I mean the watered down version here in most of America submitted by /u/WhatAmIDoing_00 to r/martialarts [link] [comments]

Ottawa police just kicked an old lady out of Dundonald Park for doing tai chi
On most days I take my toddler to the playground in Dundonald Park (Centretown) in the morning. There's an elderly Chinese lady whose often there doing tai chai. She sometimes uses a collapsible ornamental sword while doing it. Today, some shitty person apparently had a problem with her being there and called the cops on her. So three officers came to deal with the threat she posed. The officers were unreasonably aggressive—repeatedly threatening to arrest her if she didn't comply with their instructions. The problem is: she clearly doesn't speak English. I told them she probably spoke either Cantonese or Mandarin so they should get a translator. They eventually did get someone on the phone to talk to her. But the entire time, she kept motioning that if they gave her her sword back she would leave. I could easily tell that's what she was trying to communicate but the cops apparently couldn't. The officer dealing with her was mostly interested in keeping her at arms length while aggressively telling her "I'm at my limit! You're going to be arrested." Anyway, they got an officer on the phone to explain to her that she was doing something wrong and kicked her out of the park. It was such a ridiculous thing to witness. And she probably won't come back to the park. Which is just sad. We need more seniors (and other folks) doing tai chi in our parks, not less. I caught up with her after she left the park and tried to apologize for the whole incident. She seemed to understand and said thank you. Dundonald Park, and Centretown more broadly, definitely has plenty of people who can pose a danger to public wellbeing. Elderly ladies doing tai chi don't fit that description. I know they have a stressful job, but the police need to do better. submitted by /u/holymolydoug to r/ottawa [link] [comments]
