The suit against Madison Square Garden Entertainment was filed Tuesday in New York federal court, one day after cybercrime group ShinyHunters claimed to have hacked the company’s internal systems to obtain everything from biometric facial recognition data and background check information to credit scores and Social Security numbers. The suit comes three days after the Knicks defeated the Spurs in Game 5 of the NBA Finals in San Antonio to take home the 2025-26 championship. The suit says MSG Entertainment has a “tempestuous history with respect to data privacy,” and notes that “despite a slew of lawsuits regarding this conduct, as well as consternation from privacy advocates and legislators in New York, the Arena—at the direction of its owner James Dolan—continues to collect biometric information from each visitor.” The facial recognition technology has allegedly been used at MSG since 2018, and has come under fire before. In 2023, MSG Entertainment drew scrutiny, including from New York attorney general Letitia James, for using the technology to find and remove lawyers from Knicks and Rangers games for the sole reason that they worked at a firm that was involved in active litigation with the company. Ted Faro: Horizon Series Ted from obligatory r/FuckTedFaro here singlehandedly doomed humanity **twice over**. first, as the CEO of a weapons/pmc company, he was at the forefront of the Automated Weapons race (read: warbots). Well, absolute fucking genius that he was, he decided to give his robots a really nasty cocktail of qualities to make them the top of the line in drone-warfare: -They use biomass for fuel, allowing them to fight indefinitely behind enemy lines. -They can use said biomass to repair themselves and create new robots. -They use a form of black box encryption to make them impossible to hack -Said encryption also makes remote access impossible. Now, anyone with knowledge of sci-fi tropes read the above and went "is he fucking stupid?" and yes, he is. For those less informed, this guy essentially created a heavily armed, infinitely replicating army that cant be hacked and will endlessly devour biomatter. Yknow, the thing the Earth is made of. And that Humans are made of? Anyways 15 months is all it takes for his fuckup to wipe out the surface of all life. But dont worry, theres hope! Project: Horizon was incredibly ambitious. if you cant save humanity, let it die and restart it with several ai rebuilding the biosphere, raising clones, all sorts of stuff. One such AI was Apollo: a codex of the sum of human knowledge, meant to kickstart humanity back out of the Stone Age. Well part of that knowledge was the history of why the world got fucked up in the first place--Ted Faro. See, he didnt like that much, so he killed all the project leaders and destroyed Apollo entirely, wiping out the complete history of Humanity for the sake of his ego. Literally everything in the series is somehow his fault, most obviously the hordes of war machines that went into hibernation after devouring all the biomatter. Thats right, theyre still around! Fuck Ted Faro. --------- Rhea: Fire Emblem Three Houses. Rhea is the Archbishop of the dominant religion of the continent of Fodlan. Sorry, let me correct that: Rhea is *every single archbishop the religion has ever had*. She is functionally immortal, and has been leading the church she created for 995 years. The Church of Seiros is intrinsically woven into the politics of the 3 nations of Fodlan, and an extremely dominant political force, and almost every noble house is marked with the blood of ancient Saints of the church, which sometimes manifests as "Crests"--divine markings seen as blessings from the Goddess Sothis. The church itself is involved in some pretty gnarly things, but in general the faithful are decent, well meaning people. Rhea, however, was not when she made up the faith. See, she told everyone Sothis was a very loving goddess who abandoned humanity after we broke her heart/failed her, which founds the faith itself on a core of guilt and shame for how us humans acted. Except Sothis didnt leave--she got fucking murdered. By a human. Rhea, her daughter, obviously wasnt very happy about this, and so in her initial forming of the faith, her resentment for humanity shows in the scripture she MAKES UP. The Crest-Nobility system is also fake. They arent blessings at all. Theyre gained by imbibing/infusing dragon blood. Some of which was done willingly, some... not so much. The holy relics belonging to these ancients saints are actually corpses of Rhea's people made into weapons. Rhea herself isnt exactly "evil" per se, especially not after a millennia, but her stewardship of the continent has followed a few main goals: -Maintain the church's power -Maintain the status quo -Resurrect Sothis so that *she* can fix everything herself. Rhea's gameplan is functionally to force a stasis over Fodlan while she brings back her mom... but you may have noticed its been ONE THOUSAND years. In that time she has had technological development quashed and branded as heresy, including the use of oil or a printing press, has held back medical science so that healing will be the sole monopoly of the church, but worst of all? shes just sort of... negligent. Shes so focused on her mom that an immense amount of civil unrest has brewed under her nose. A great many of the characters you meet are suffering under the political system she put in place, and then find solace in the false faith she also put in place. Nobles turn on each other and resentment breeds because some were born without crests and some were, and other nobles engage in outright breeding programs to bring crests into their family or produce a crest bearing heir One character: Mercedes, was adopted by a noble who married her mother for her crest, hoping for him to give him a crest bearing heir. when she didnt, he turned his attention on *then-child* Mercedes, leading to the two having to go on the run. Another character, Marianne, believes she is a cursed monster because of a rare crest she bears, and prays to Sothis to *KILL HER* every single day in constant suicidal ideation. Rhea's lies about crests have lead to Marianne praying to another one of her lies for death as an escape from how she has suffered... at the hands of Rhea's lies. It gets to the point where the most powerful nation of the 3 will outright declare war on the church itself, partially to oust Rhea specifically. Regardless of who you side with, all endings besides one very specific one result in either the church being torn down, or being placed under new leadership to guide it in a much different direction. Now, there ARE other antagonists, but they spent most of that millennia in hiding, and the fucked up political state of the setting is almost entirely her doing. Actually explaining everything would take like 20 pages. -------- Caine: World of Darkness. This ones short. Caine killing Abel spawned 2-4 entire gamelines in the verse. Abel became the first Wraith (ghost) upon death, spawning Wraith: The Oblivion. God cursed Caine a couple times, and Caine also got involved with Lilith (long story) and became the first Vampire, resulting in Vampire: The Masquerade. You know, Bloodlines, Bloodhunt, Bloodlines 2, those "choice of" games on steam, several editions of TTRPG and a bunch of books? yeah. All him. Things get a bit messier from here, as the Angels that saw this go down freaked the FUCK out. See, they loved humans A LOT, but like, in the way parasocial twitter fans love something, so when Caine went and did that, the Angels all went either "Humans are perfect babies who NEED our guidance" or "humans are all disgusting monsters who dont deserve us". Both of these viewpoints resulted in roughly 1/3rd of the Angels declaring war on God (whoopsie!), starting Demon: The Fallen when they eventually lost and became demons. Depending on which origin you believe for "Mages"--humans with reality warping powers, Caine is also by extension responsible for THEM too, as some of the rebel angels decided humans deserved to master their own fate and God was wrong to keep them weak, and then attempted to elevate them to God's level in Project: Babel. These attempts to elevate humanity awoke an immortal soul in some of them, resulting in humans with limited, but still God-*like* power. Mages themselves believe that the First Murder split the spirit world from the physical. So you can even tack on Mage: The Ascension if you want. When Season 1 ends, all the assets in your Vault and personalized Armory access will be wiped, and your shells will be reset to factory standards to put everyone at the same starting line. Darksight scopes, which highlight the environment around you after you ADS for a brief period; these are focused on traversal versus highlighting enemies. Kill UESC to gather their encryption certificates, or Certs for short, and hack into Network Towers across Night Marsh to gain access to their stockpiles of weapons, healing supplies, and other loot. The UESC has also locked down the exfils on Night Marsh, and you’ll need to collect Certs to activate exfils on the map. You may have noticed staircases on Marsh that led to closed-off doors. Anomalous energy is flowing from Complex. What are the UESC hiding up there? Gather enough UESC Certs to open the doors and hunt down what enemies, mysteries, and powerful loot that awaits in the upper rooms of Complex Control. Dire Marsh and Night Marsh Availability One of our takeaways from Season 1 is that we want to be more judicious with how we handle the amount of queues in Marathon. Between adding Night Marsh, Duos queue on a daily rotating map, and continued experimental modes, we’re conscious of the impact it could have on queue health and matchmaking. To that, Dire Marsh and Night Marsh will both be available at all times for at least the first week of the season. After that, the maps will rotate availability with one another every 90 minutes. You’ll be able to complete most of the existing Dire Marsh contracts on either zone, with a couple of exceptions. We’re also introducing some new Night Marsh exclusive contracts—MIDA and Traxus are both interested in learning more about what the UESC are hiding in the dark—which you’ll need to complete on Night Marsh. If you unlocked and completed a run on Dire Marsh last season, you’ll have access to both Dire Marsh and Night Marsh when Season 2 begins (same rules apply for Outpost). If you want to protect your team from a rocket drone barrage during a clutch final exfil or turn the tides on an aggressive team rushing you down, this is your Runner. Sentinel's Prime ability Defender System deploys an automated laser platform which identifies and destroys incoming enemy grenades and missiles, as well as boosting weapon handling for all nearby crewmates. Bait enemies into your traps and lock them in place to finish them before they can escape. Sentinel's passive trait Castle Doctrine grants increased resistances after taking splash damage, and faster weapon handling for close-range weapons when surrounded by enemies. Prey Tracker, their trait ability, will activate a short range, motion-tracking system that allows them to see nearby moving targets on radar. Use this to gather a bit of extra intel on who or what’s moving around you, and set up your defenses accordingly. 2026_Marathon_S2_Launch_Press_Kit_COMPRESSED_015.jpg Sandbox Updates and New Gear Each new season of Marathon is an opportunity for us to take a holistic look at what’s working, what needs improvements, and where we can add new tools to the sandbox. With everyone’s Vaults empty, it’s a time we can take bigger and more swings across weapons, gear, and equipment. These changes can create space for new metas to form and keeps Marathon feeling fresh as you progress throughout the season. Here are some of the highlights for what’s coming in Season 2. Weapons, Mods, and Chips Season 2 brings two new weapons to the sandbox. KKV-9SD First is the KKV, a new pistol-frame SMG with an integrated suppressor whose name may sound familiar to Marathon veterans. Its rate of fire is extremely fast, coming in at 1200 rounds per minute. Effective if you want to take down UESC units without other shells noticing you or if you are looking to mow down a Runner in a split second. It also a good counter to all the shotgun rushing we saw in Season 1, giving you new tools to combat this strategy. The KKV also comes with a new built-in folding stock mod. Keep it closed for benefits when firing from the hip, or use your weapon action to unfold the stock and trade those benefits for ADS benefits. This mod can also be used by the new Battle Pistol. 2026_Marathon_S2_Launch_Press_Kit_COMPRESSED_012.jpg D54 Battle Pistol A fantastic weapon for close encounters and 1v1 duels, the D54 comes with a red dot sight and fires full-auto three-round bursts. It’s a high-handling, medium rate-of-fire sidearm—think hybrid between the BR33 Volley Rifle and the BRRT SMG. A perfect companion for sniper rifles and other long-range weapons. Both of these new weapons also synergize well with Sentinel, who receives benefits to close-range weapons when surrounded by enemies. 2026_Marathon_S2_Launch_Press_Kit_COMPRESSED_011.jpg Rarities and Chips Season 2 also brings some changes to the rarity of weapons and new options in the Armory, with the goal of shaking up when and how you run into weapons throughout the season. This should give you a chance to try out other weapons more often and keep it from feeling like you have to use the same loadouts season over season. In addition to the new weapons and folding stock mod, we’re also adding eight new chips with Season 2. This includes: Brain Freeze Chip: Precision downs and kills with this weapon create a small explosion that spreads Frost to nearby hostiles. Alarmist Chip: After aiming down sights for a brief duration, projectile impacts create a terrifying proximity drone alert. Scrapyard Chip: Defeating hostiles with this weapon has a chance to spawn depleted heal items or standard materials. We’ll share more details on the weapons, mods, and other balance changes before Season 2. Implants During Season 1 it was hard to tell what each implant did at a glance. They were named based on their stats, with a random perk attached, but what ended up mattering most to players were the perks, so the names ended up being confusing. In Season 2, implants are now defined by their perk first and have fixed stats, with the name of each implant reflecting its perk. When you check your Vault or are quickly looting, it should be easier to tell them apart and choose which ones fit your builds. All your favorite implants are still there, split between head, torso, and legs, and they still give a stat benefit that scales with each rarity tier, from gray all the way up to gold. With this update, some implants will now only exist at higher rarity tiers, as we want to balance the power of high-utility perks like Logic Bomb or Triage Cloaking Device with how easy they are to access. New System: The Cradle One of our goals with seasonal updates is to improve and update the way you progress throughout the season so your climbs feel different each time. To that, in Season 2 we’re introducing a new system called the Cradle, which is where you’ll go to improve your Runner shell across the course of the season. Cradle_LVL30_MAX_DEX_NoTooltip_R2_052226_EN.jpg With the Cradle, you’ll empower the WEAVEworms that create your biocybernetic bodies to increase your Runner shell stats across six categories and unlock powerful perks. The primary way you’ll progress your stats is by using the Matter Converter, which turns weapons, equipment, and other items into experience for your Cradle. The better the item, the more experience you’ll receive. Level up your Cradle to earn Energy, which you can then allocate to any of the six stat categories. Hitting certain breakpoints will unlock additional perks for your Runner shells. Convert-Matter_LVL50_Selection_EN.jpg You can reallocate your Energy to different stats at any time, with no penalties or limitations. Feel free to experiment freely and adjust your stats based on your builds, playstyles, and goals. Your Cradle progression is shared across all Runner shells, and it resets at the start of a new season. With the Cradle, you’ll have easier access to the stats you want to focus on whenever you want (no more needing to level up a faction to gain access to stats), you can change your focus any time, and everything will be on one page to make things easier to manage. Cradle_LVL50_MAX_STR_Tooltip_R2_052226_EN.jpg Faction Progression and Contracts With all of the Runner shell upgrades in the faction progression trees being moved to the Cradle, we’ve been able to expand the Armory options, which should give you even more reliable access to weapons and items as the season progresses. You can expect to see some new additions to the faction trees too. For example, each faction now has a unique family of implants (head, torso, and leg) which fits the playstyle of that faction. NuCaloric offers implants that help with healing and durability, while MIDA has ones more proficient in mobility or disruption. We’ve also made some adjustments to schemas, which can now unlock specific Barter offers in the Armory. Faction Progression Improvements In Season 2, we’re increasing the rate you make faction progress across the board. You’ll feel this through a combination of under-the-hood tweaks, adjustments to the requirements to level up each faction, and increased options and rates at which you earn reputation. One of our goals with these changes is to make it so most players who regularly play can max out their faction upgrades and reach VIP rank during the season. This goes for players who love to crew up, as well as the lone wolves who prefer to run solo. Here are a couple of changes you’ll notice when it comes to faction progression: Updated the requirements to level up each faction, reducing the time necessary to reach VIP in most cases. This includes a pass on the amount of materials required to unlock faction upgrades, so hopefully this time you’re not craving Biolens Seeds and Alien Alloys as much. Standard Contracts will grant significantly increased faction reputation, so they should help much more with progression. Added new ways to earn reputation, including adding reputation gain to Enhanced (green) valuables and a small amount of reputation for defeating UESC. Unlocking everything a faction has to offer will still require time and successful exfils with valuables and materials, but it should feel more like a staircase where you take one step after another, not like a wall you must climb. 2026_Marathon_S2_Launch_Press_Kit_COMPRESSED_009.jpg Contracts Contracts remain a great way to earn the favor of factions, and we’ve been working on some improvements for Season 2. Our goal is to shave off the rough edges, chill down a bit on the heavy traversal and the “in a single run” requirements, and reformulate Priority Contracts so they don’t feel like a blocker to your progress. Priority Contracts will be more focused on granting loot rewards rather than being hard requirements for reputation. Priority Contracts are also no longer gated behind faction reputation levels. We’ve also refreshed Standard and Liaison contracts to shave off some of those rough edges. Reminder that if you’ve completed the Liaison contracts and unlocked a faction in Season 1, they’ll be unlocked for you in Season 2. Cryo Archive contracts are also getting an update. Having every contract require opening a vault made it difficult to make any progress on a run without taking in a key and risking it all. In Season 2, we reworked these to set more achievable goals that can be progressed over multiple runs and to help teach Cryo softshells the mechanics of the ship, with the seventh contract still requiring you to take down the Compiler. Overall, we want the experience of completing contracts to be more organic and enjoyable. We’re also working on some changes to streamline contracts to make them less linear in how they roll out to you over time, which we’ll share more about in the future. Experimental Queues and Duos Queue Last season, we introduced experimental queues—including Duos Queue and Sponsored Queue—as a way to test the waters with different ways to play Marathon. We’ve loved seeing the participation and hearing your feedback in Season 1, and we’re going to continue that in Season 2, including explorations with more PVE content. More details to come! We’re also adding Duos Queue in Season 2 with a rotating daily queue for Perimeter, Dire Marsh, Night Marsh, and Outpost. The rotation is part of us being more judicious with how we handle our matchmaking divisions in Marathon, and we’ll continue to evaluate your feedback on Duos (and all of the new content) as the season progresses. 2026_Marathon_S2_Launch_Press_Kit_COMPRESSED_010.jpg Ranked Updates Ranked will return in Season 2 on June 14, with all new rewards across the board. We’re also making some high-level changes to help simplify Ranked and improve matchmaking times. This includes combining the Low and High Stakes modes into a single queue with a 5,000 Loadout value minimum. Players must also now bring a Holotoag that matches their current rank. We’ve also made some other additions so progression is a bit faster and to ease a bit of gear fear: Progression has been adjusted and should feel faster across all ranks. Win/loss point progression will be influenced by the average rank of the players in that match compared to the player. If you play against people above your rank and lose, your loss won't be as big. If you win against them, though, the earnings will be higher. There is a new daily Ranked Sponsored Kit that contains a loadout appropriate for your rank—the higher your rank, the better the gear. Players can earn Arachne reputation by exfiling with a Tag Chip. We’ll be making more improvements to Ranked as Season 2 progresses, including a new system that will make it harder for ill-intended players to coordinate and team up across runs. Cryo Archive Returns June 11 Cryo Archive will continue on rotation during Season 2, with the first chance to play on June 11, right after Ranked. Reminder that any of the Cryo Archive Subroutines you unlocked during Season 1 will carry over to Season 2. Quality of Life Updates In addition to all of these changes, we also have a bunch of QoL updates coming in Season 2, with more to come as the season progresses. Increased Vault space: a fully upgraded Vault can now hold up to 512 grid spaces of items. Added the ability to batch select items in your Vault. Added a loot filter where if you select a slot you’re missing on your loadout, it’ll filter only the loot you can equip in that slot. Simplified and streamlined the lobby UI, so that you can get into a run faster and more intuitively. This includes combining the Loadout and Vault menus. Players can access select UI screens during matchmaking, including factions, the Codex, settings, and more. Added new PC and console cursor speed settings. Added new privacy settings with name obfuscation and a matchmaking timer offset. Additional game security features to speed up detection of cheats and reduce their effectiveness. Implemented a round of CPU performance improvements, as well as adding support for frame generation on PC. Performance optimization is an ongoing priority for us, and we anticipate further improvements in future updates. Improvements to our network technology to reduce the rate of disconnections, particularly for players outside the United States. Marathon’s Open Play Week Begins June 2 At the start of Season 2, we’re opening the gates to Marathon so everyone can experience Season 2 and the many changes made throughout Season 1. Grab your friends and crew up as everyone kicks off the season on a clean slate*. Marathon’s Open Play Week takes place from June 2 to June 9 and includes the full game on Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Big disclaimer, this is based on my personal opinion. I've traveled to a majority of Japan's prefectures, and many towns within each of them. This list is based on my own experiences and is meant to serve as advice for people who want to travel to Japan but are unsure whether the "touristy" spots they are interested in are actually worthwhile. "But I went to (insert place I dislike) and it was great!!" awesome for you, make your own post about it. I imagine most people on this sub haven't had the privilege to travel this country as extensively as I have thanks to me living here for many years. I want this to be a genuine resource for people whose travel to Japan might be their first and only time. I want you to have a great time here! I've made another post awhile back about some hidden gems I think more people should know about, if you're interested. I plan to make a sequel post soon since I've traveled to far more prefectures and towns since then! Touristy and WORTH IT Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture This is a popular vacation spot for Japanese people living around Tokyo, and has become a popular tourist locale as well. The city area of Nikko is massive and includes many sections differentiated by their geography. I spent four days there (two in the Chuzenji area and two in the Kinugawa area), and it was fantastic. Stunning nature around the lake and Mt. Nantai, and beautiful onsen valley in Kinugawa with a lot to do in the area. I went in the fall personally but I can imagine beauty during all seasons with the variety of nature. Osaka Aquarium A massive aquarium that deserves its reputation as one of the best aquariums in Asia. Aquariums are one of my favorite things to go and see when I'm travelling, and Osaka Aquarium is tied for my favorite in all of Japan (tied with Toba Aquarium in Mie Prefecture, which I highly recommend by the way). The structure of the aquarium is one of its most interesting features, and you will be blown away by some of the species it hosts. Easily a must-see in Osaka. Shirakawago, Gifu Prefecture Again a popular Japanese tourist destination that has reached a foreign audience in recent years. Perhaps I got insanely lucky, but I traveled there during Golden Week and by some miracle it wasn't that crowded. During this time there were also still cherry blossoms in bloom due to it being high in the mountains, and that was an unexpected surprise (cherry blossom season has ended in most everywhere in Japan by May). This is a lovely historical locale with beautiful architecture and stunning views. I do feel the need to note though that there are extremely similar gassho-zukuri villages in neighboring prefecture Toyama (Ainokura and Suganuma) that are way, way less popular and therefore less crowded, and so certainly worth visiting. Itsukushima (aka Miyajima), Hiroshima Prefecture This is the island with the famed ocean Torii temple off the coast of Hiroshima. While that whole temple complex is beautiful, I most enjoyed going up the mountain and hiking around that area, where you'll find easy trails going down the mountain and some more remote temples. The whole island is very popular with tourists but has so many shrines and temples to appreciate that I found it completely worth visiting. Most people come by boat in the morning and leave by boat in the late afternoon, but I enjoyed staying overnight, especially since you get a far less crowded temple experience in the early morning. Be warned though, there's maybe five total restaurants that serve dinner on the island in the evening and they are expectedly packed. Bring food, make reservations, or otherwise expect long wait times. Himeji Castle, Hyogo Prefecture My favorite castle in Japan. I will put the disclaimer that I haven't been there since 2018, so maybe it's way more crowded now. Still, I can't imagine crowds deterring me from enjoying the beauty of this enormous castle complex. You can spend a lot of time exploring the entire castle, and the nearby area is similarly enjoyable. Easily the most architecturally-interesting and photogenic castle in Japan, in my opinion. Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture This city is famous for its onsen and ryokan, and to be honest, if you're going JUST for that, I think you could easily find better ryokan at more affordable price-points in many other places. However, there are things to do in Hakone that make it worth visiting. Particularly, the Hakone Open Air Museum is one of my favorite art museums in the country. As I said the ryokans run more expensive than ones you can find in less popular areas, but at the same time they are representative of the best parts of the ryokan experience -- wonderful onsen, peaceful atmosphere, impeccable food. If you're willing to splurge, you certainly won't be disappointed with the experience. Touristy and NOT WORTH IT Harajuku, Tokyo This one really pains me to write as someone who adores many subsets of J-fashion and who has been to Harajuku many times starting from 2013. Unfortunately, the Harajuku of today is quite different from its origin as a hub for eccentric fashion culture. Nowadays, Takeshita-dōri is overrun with instagrammable food and kitschy shops that sell cheap generic kawaii goods. Some lolita or brand stores still remain, but they're uncommon. Not to mention, the street itself is ungodly levels of crowded, so navigation is a nightmare, especially if you're with other people. What I recommend instead: If there is a particular brand of J-fashion you're interested in, they almost certainly have a physical store in Tokyo. Look into stores for brands you're interested in and go there for the J-fashion shopping experience. For example, I really love the brand Liz Lisa, and they have a location in the very popular shopping center Shibuya 109 that I make sure to hit up whenever I happen to be in Tokyo. Akihabara, Tokyo Similar to Harajuku, the original appeal of Akihabara has changed in recent years in response to overtourism. If you're interested in technology, gaming, and anime culture, you can surely still find a lot of that in Akihabara, but I think it's gotten very inconvenient for practically shopping for any of these things. I think Akihabara could still be enjoyable for tweens and teens who want the novel experience of being surrounded by anime imagery and nerd culture that you just don't see in other countries (especially if they aren't looking to actually buy anything or otherwise can spend mommy's money on overpriced merch), but aside from that audience, I don't think there would be much appeal. What I recommend instead: Nearly every major city in Japan has maid cafes and otaku stuff. It's guaranteed. Whatever major city you're going to, look up anime stores (ESPECIALLY resell and second-hand stores), maid cafes, or arcades. You can experience the appeal of Akihabara for way less money and with way fewer people. Notably, look into the birthplace of the author of a popular manga or anime you love -- I guarantee if it's popular enough, there's museums or shops or statues or whatever else dedicated to said creator/anime in their place of birth. Kyoto*\* Big, BIG asterisk on this one. Please hear me out. If you're someone who primarily cares about seeing the most famous places in Japan (like, you're going to visit Japan once in your life and you mainly want to see the big famous bucket-list places that everyone knows), by all means go to Kyoto. It's the cultural capital of Japan for a reason -- there's a lot of important culture there. You absolutely will not be starved of things to do. Similarly, if you only have a short time in Japan and you want to be able to see a lot of temples in close proximity to each other (and again you don't care about crowds), Kyoto is great for that. I would argue rushing through sightseeing as many temples as possible is kind of antithetical to appreciating them, but to each their own, and I especially understand if you have a short time in the country and want to see all you can. HOWEVER, I feel it's my responsibilty to report what I've seen from people experiencing Kyoto in recent years. Since moving to Japan, I've had maybe 10 or so different international friends all come to visit the country at different times. Without fail, I warn them about visiting Kyoto and give other recommendations, and they end up going to Kyoto anyway. Then after their trip, without fail, they say to me something like "Tokyo was so fun, I spent a week there and never ran out of things to do! Osaka was great, the food was amazing. Kyoto was...um....well, Kyoto was really crowded." None of them has said that Kyoto was especially enjoyable nor that it was a highlight of their trip. Not one of them. You might be in the camp of people who look into Instagram hacks for getting around crowds or "tourist hacks" for Kyoto in general. Maybe you're in the group of people who say things like "Yeah Kyoto has really crowded spots, but you can find smaller temples with fewer crowds if you look for them!" Maybe you have the money to shell out for a local guide who can get you into lesser-known places. These are totally valid and if that's how you want to travel, go for it. But I feel the need to tell you: as much as Kyoto has a lot of great culture and history, there are so, SO many other places in Japan that have temples just as beautiful (or even better IMO), food just as delicious, and history just as rich, all while being WAY less crowded, and WAY cheaper. So, all I ask is you consider more before putting Kyoto on your Japan itinerary as default. What I recommend instead: If your interest in Kyoto is in seeing Japanese culture through shrines, temples, and gardens, I beg you to do ten more minutes of research into what Japan has to offer and you will find so much to see. I've been to Kyoto's most famous temples (before they got insanely crowded) and while they are beautiful, I wouldn't put any of them in my top 10 in the country. Kiyomizudera is a great temple complex but there are better ones. Kinkakuji's views aren't much better in person than what you can get from a photograph. Fushimi Inari Taisha is admittedly beautiful and maybe makes the top 10 without the crowds. But with the crowds, no chance. As an aside, I plan to make a post eventually with my favorite temples and shrines in the country, so hopefully that will be of help to some people. As for gardens, any garden in Kyoto is handily beaten by Kenrokuen in Kanazawa, Korakuen in Okayama, or Sankeien in Yokohama. Shirahama, Wakayama Prefecture A bit of a disclaimer here that I have no clue if this place's popularity has reached the Western sphere. However, I do know that it has reached the Asiatic sphere, and oh my god, I think I saw more Chinese people in Shirahama than I did when I literally went to China. Now if the place was just crowded, no biggie (clearly I think some places are worth the crowds if they're enjoyable enough). The issue is, Shirahama just doesn't have enough appeal to make it worth the insane crowds. It's known for its white sand beaches, but going there I learned it only has like two white sand beaches total and they are very small. It's also well-known for its famous fish market, Toretore Ichiba, where you can see things like whole tuna being cut and auctioned in real time, and even buy some yourself. The fish market was loads of fun despite the hectic energy, but it absolutely gave me food poisoning and I spend the rest of my time in Wakayama throwing up and fighting a fever. What I recommend instead: For beaches, there's a lot of interesting ones. Pretty off the beaten path, but Kawazu in Shizuoka Prefecture has lovely beaches (and though I haven't been elsewhere along the Shizuoka coast, I would bet other towns are similarly lovely). Tottori's famous sand dunes line a long beach that is very picturesque. For something different, Kumano in Mie Prefecture has the longest pebble beach in Japan. I sadly have never been to Okinawa, but of course their beaches are famous and I expect much bigger than Shirahama's. As for fish markets, Karato Fish Market in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture has fresh, delicious fish that didn't make me puke. Fukuoka Sorry Fukuoka, you just didn't wow me very much. I think because this prefecture has the major airport hub people use to get into Kyushu, it is a popular destination. I've taken two trips there, to Fukuoka City and Kitakyushu, and neither gave me much to really sink my teeth into. I actually left Kitakyushu before I had planned to because I simply had exhausted all there was to see, even really digging for things to do. Now, I've heard from a couple friends that there are some rural highlights in the prefecture, and those may definitely be worth seeing. As for the prefecture's most popular destinations, though, they were underwhelming. What I recommend instead: If you're going to Fukuoka, it's probably as a gateway to go to elsewhere in Kyushu, or to Yamaguchi. I recommend taking the precious time on your trip you were planning to spend in Fukuoka instead giving more time to your Yamaguchi/Kyushu trip. Yamaguchi you can easily spend a week in, and Kyushu outside of Fukuoka is one of the most rewarding areas of Japan to travel through. This post is not extensive, there are many popular places I've been to that I just didn't feel the need to comment on -- this post is already incredibly long.
