I took a punt on one of these portable thermal printers for character and refrence sheets and its fantastic (for me in particular as i dont have a convetional printer). Its portable and uses zero ink. [EDIT/ NOTE] - An important point was raised in the comments. Thinking of a thermal printer to have my tasks printed out kind of like orders in a restaurant. Probably could build an automation from a emailadress or some kind of chat that will then get printed out. Also an that receipt could have an eisenhower-matrix or something else to prioritize said tasks. Have you seen something like that already or have even built that? Why is that printer companies always resort to some sort of paper/ink scams? Even in an inkless system, this company has figured out a way. Every roll of stickers that this company sells has a RFID chip on it (the green sticker). Pictured text is with the RFID on the roll (left), and then removed from the same roll (right). The roll here was not from nelko (aliexpress $2 roll). This RFID chip literally tells the software to not print like shit. This company has gotten so big that now regular sticker roll manufacturers have their products returned frequently because people think something is incompatible. What's worse is their adhesive appears to be WORSE than the offbrand. The nelko brand was falling off of my glossy 3d prints, but not offbrand roll. There are also a TON of cool colorful backgrounds and different sized stickers that all would print with scanlines, unless you knew what was going on. An easy workaround is to just put the rfid sticker in the printing chamber. Problem solved. But I'm afraid that this issue is going to one day become more complex and not easily bypass-able before it gets better. Fuck this company. The thermal printer is powered by a rather beefy 9V 2A power supply. With just 5V the printer just made some grey strokes on the paper. The 9V board than supplies the Raspberry Pico. Left button for multiplication and division, middle for addition and subtraction. Right button has prints some motivation in German. Future ideas: different modes like a party printer that drops funny insults or what to drink next. Maybe a little server mode where I can send text to the printer, don’t know yet. Is there any reason I shouldn’t get a thermal printer to print out resumes, cover letters, & tutoring flyers (the kind that has a tear off phone number at the bottom). Would I be better off taking the time to go print them at FedEx every time I make an edit or adjustment…? I’m not what you’d call a major professional, so my resumes don’t tend to be in a portfolio, they’re often just laminated or stapled to a cover letter. Trying to avoid looking at my phone immediately when I wake up. I grabbed a used Epson thermal receipt printer for $65, created a simple component to call it from HA, and have a 6:30am automation to print out my daily “newspaper” as my kids call it. I work at a public library and most days are calm, even when it’s busy. Last month someone higher up sent out a shiny new "accountability" memo that said every single checkout must include a printed receipt, no exceptions, no asking the patron, no email option unless they request it after you print. The memo literally said it reduces disputes, and if a patron refuses the paper you still print it and discard it yourself for "audit consistency." We all kinda rolled our eyes, but i decided fine, i will follow it exactly because i am not getting blamed later. The next Saturday we had a line out the door, strollers, seniors, kids, everyone, and i printed a receipt for every checkout even when people said "no thanks." I didn’t speed print either, because the policy also said to highlight due dates and verbally confirm them, so i did that too, every time. One guy checked out 47 items for a book club donation sort, so i printed two full pages of receipt, highlighted, confirmed, stapled, and then put the duplicate copy in the "audit tray" like the instructions told us. Another patron asked why i was throwing paper straight into recycling and i just said "new rules, sorry," because i wasnt gonna editorialize. By noon we had burned through two rolls of thermal paper and the printer started doing that faint stripe thing, which means it’s about to jam and need a reboot. So i logged a supply request, and kept printing anyway, because the memo didnt say to pause for "common sense." The line got slower, people got cranky, and we ran out of paper completely, which meant we couldnt check anything out at all because the receipt screen blocks the checkout until it prints. We hope you’re as excited as we are about the launch of H2S. After all, H2S is more like the product everyone has been asking for over the past three years — essentially a bigger X1C. But this launch also brings us a tough question: should we let everyone know that before the end of the year we’ll have another product in the H2 series, the H2C? If we announce it now, it will certainly hurt sales of H2D and H2S, and affect the company’s revenue, since H2C hasn’t even reached our warehouse yet, and news of a new model could make people hesitate to buy now. On the other hand, if we don’t say anything about H2C, many people might regret their purchase of H2D or H2S later. It’s really a difficult choice. It’s simple — to clean the nozzle from leftover melted filament. When you try to print different colors with a single nozzle, it’s basically like painting with just one brush. Every time you switch colors, you need to wash the brush so the old paint doesn’t mess up the new one. It’s the same with 3D printing: you have to purge the nozzle before switching filaments. Now, what if we could skip that tedious cleaning step? In painting, you’d just use multiple brushes, each dedicated to one color. But in a printer, what’s the real equivalent of a “brush”? Is it the whole gantry? The toolhead? The hotend assembly? Or just the nozzle itself? Every choice has its pros and cons — and that’s why this race is so interesting. The contamination only happens at the nozzle, but the nozzle doesn’t work alone. It needs the motion system, filament feeding, heating, and temperature sensing, all wired into the printer. Disconnecting and reconnecting those systems during a nozzle switch is a reliability nightmare. The more components you swap as a package, the fewer connections you need to worry about — but that comes with a larger footprint and higher cost. The less you swap, the cheaper and smaller things get, but the harder it is to be reliable. In the end, it’s always a trade-off between reliability and footprint. Here’s a quick tour of the options: Plan A: Swap the whole gantry. Straightforward, no connectors to worry about. The catch: you need a full gantry for each nozzle, which makes it expensive and bulky. This is the IDEX approach — usually limited to just two nozzles. Plan B: Swap only the toolhead, while sharing the same motion system. This saves cost and space, but you now have to deal with mechanical connectors between the gantry and the toolhead. Toolheads are still bulky, so you can’t fit too many of them. This is the “tool changer” approach, seen in products from E3D, Prusa, and later Snapmaker. Plan C: Swap only the hotend assembly. That way you share the motion system, extruder, and cooling, which saves even more space and cost. But then you face the headache of connecting all the power and signal cables for heating and temperature sensing. A pogo pin connector works in demos, but making it reliable over millions of cycles is a whole other story. Plan D: The simplest idea — if you trust thermal conductivity at the interface, you could heat and measure temperature from the toolhead side, like in the A1 nozzle. Then you’d only switch the bare nozzle and heatsink. The challenge is ensuring consistent thermal conductivity, especially when the nozzle needs to be changed thousands of times more often than on an A1. We could keep going with Plan E, F, and beyond, but let’s stop here. In 2023, we decided Plan C was the sweet spot — the right balance between reliability and footprint — as long as we could crack the connectivity problem. Our secret? Ditch the mechanical connectors and go wireless. Induction heating can already heat the nozzle wirelessly, but heating alone isn’t enough — you also need to measure the temperature. Our solution was to design a custom microcircuit on the hotend that receives power, measures temperature, and communicates wirelessly with the toolhead. It might not sound fancy on paper, but making it robust, reliable, and certifiable took a ton of engineering and know-how. In the end, this integrated approach let us shrink the hotend assembly down to just four parts: nozzle, heatbreak, thermistor, and a compact PCB — all packed into just 10 grams and a 20 × 15 × 56 mm form factor. Wireless heating and communication solved one big problem, but positioning the nozzle precisely was another. It’s not enough to just switch nozzles — they have to land in exactly the right spot, with micrometer precision, every single time, across every printer we ship. Otherwise, you’ll see defects and scars on your prints. Achieving that requires either extremely repeatable mechanics, a fast and accurate measurement system, or ideally both. And then there’s software. Embedded firmware, slicer integration, user interface — all of it. Customers often underestimate how much software matters, and honestly, so did we at first. That’s why, even after the hardware design was locked months ago, we still weren’t ready to ship. The reality of product development is staring at piles of finished printers waiting for software polish, and asking yourself: “Should we launch now, or wait?” After three years of R&D, though, we’re finally confident. We’ll be ready to ship the H2C by the end of 2025. Before wrapping up, here’s one last question we know many of you will ask: Can I upgrade my H2D to an H2C? The answer is yes — but it does require some skill, patience, a willingness to carefully follow instructions and a few hours of your time. Got this cute thing for about 11usd, converted. Best thing about it is it has no screen. This is similar to the kenko tokina thermal printer camera, except this has sd card slot. it gives almost the same experience as taking photos with instax or polaroid. I was against buying this thinking it is just one more unnecssary thing, but changed my mind after the crazy sales i had during the Blackfriday week. I was doing retail arbitrage for BF products and still doing 3-10 sales per day with the inventory. I miss labeld two packages and that cost me 2 more shipping labels and disappointed customers. Fortunately they were nice enough to understand the mistake but i payed like $15 more for it. If this happens two more times it will cost same as a cheap thermal printer. I think a label printer will help me avoid this mistake not totally but mostly. I am getting paranoid of miss labeling since then. Always double checking the products. If i print 5-10 labels from my HP printer and then try to cut and tape it i get confused easily. Especially UPS and FEDEX won't have the item name on the lables so i get easily confused. USPS ebay's label has the item next to the label so i am ok with that. Maybe there are some timps about this but this is my situation. Heard lables are free. Tape is not.
