IB graphing calculators ranked [2026]
Disclaimer: Ranking is subjective. May be unhinged towards the end. This is limited to IB exam use, and assumes that your teacher does not do an excellent job teaching graphing calculators. If you have to self-study a calculator, might as well learn a great one at an affordable price. 1. NumWorks. 4.5/5 Finds up to 10 roots at once. Automatically sets the zoom for a plot. Can directly solve for unknown mu and sigma in normal distributions. Lightning fast. Smooth experience. Excellent value with relatively low price. Why pay for fancy apps on other models if they are disabled on the IB exams? 2. Casio fx-CG50. 4/5 Casio's allow you to correct mistakes from many step ago and will re-run the later calculations. It can also find up to 10 roots. Like most of the models (except for NumWorks and Nspire), the coordinates are automatically stored in X and Y. This makes it easy to use them in subsequent calculations, as IB discourages premature rounding of intermediate values. Some downsides include that in rare scenarios, Casio only gives 4 decimal places and rounds down. Does 0.0123 round to 0.0123 or 0.0124 to 3sf? Needs some effort to figure out. It is also missing certain on-screen help, and requires more memorization than other models. 3. HP Prime. 4/5 HP Prime can only find one root at a time, and cannot edit past calculations in place, but its speed and smooth user experience place it ahead of others. Did I mention it's touch-screen? 4-5 (tie). TI-84 Plus CE / Casio fx-9860GIII. 3.5/5 Meet the requirements. The overwrite default in TI-84 is annoying. 9860GIII has more features, but it's black and white, so somewhat balance out. 6. TI Nspire CX II. 3.5/5 Sometimes speed isn't everything. Sure, it's lightning fast. Would be better if key points are stored in X and Y (like literally every model except NumWorks, on which it is super easy to save). Why are settings all over the place? Why do I have to press 4 keys for tan? Why do I need a touch pad? Either make it touch screen or keypad only please. Why the A-Z keyboard? (Side note, IB prohibits QWERTY keyboards on calculators.) What do you mean kx is a variable and not k*x? What do you mean tanx is not defined? What do you mean x(5) is evaluating the function x at 5? Unfortunately the little things annoy me too much. Haven't tried Casio fx-CG100 or the TI-84 Evo. Based on what I have read, CG100 should be between NumWorks and CG50, and Evo roughly equal with HP Prime. As they are relatively new, the resources are less plentiful. For a comparison of ~20 features with key differences, see https://geta7.com/aa-notes/graphic-display-calculators/#feature-chart Hope this helps you find the GDC suitable for you! [EDIT 1:] I clarified the criteria and feature differences in a comment: https://www.reddit.com/r/IBO/comments/1uc9mho/comment/otuaaeu/ submitted by /u/geta7_com to r/IBO [link] [comments]

My math teacher gave me this ti 84 plus!
(He actually gave it to me on Thursday bc it was the 2nd to last day of school for me, I just forgot to make a post here lol) Basically, all of the graphing calculators at my school were going up for auction or smth because we've switched to just using desmos, however this calculator had some corrosion in the battery holder, so my math teacher was told he could throw it away. However, since he knew that I like collecting and messing around with calculators, and the fact that there's barely any corrosion (as seen in img 2), he just gave me the calculator instead of throwing it away! It took like less than 5 minutes to clean it a bit, and it works perfectly fine. Idk if I'm really going to do much with it, but it's still cool submitted by /u/BurntCheeseSauce to r/calculators [link] [comments]

Is ti 84 evo worth the extra $60?
I found a ti 84 plus ce python for a good deal for about $100 new. I need a calculator for AP Calc AB and BC later on, as well as college as I will be majoring in STEM. I'm wondering if the evo is worth the extra $60 for that use case? Also I don't plan on jailbraking it or anything like that, just using normally for my math classes and exams. submitted by /u/StartObjective3669 to r/calculators [link] [comments]

The TI-84 Evo was announced and releases today. I'm decidedly unimpressed
https://education.ti.com/en/products/calculators/graphing-calculators/ti-84-evo I've been in the classroom for 9 years, teaching AP for 8 of those 9. I have a classroom set of 84+CE, so I'm very familiar with their functionality (and lack thereof in some cases...). It's a solid calculator that gets the job done the same way it has for the past 40 years that TI has monopolized the High School Graphing Calculator market. The Evo features a higher resolution, faster processor, and app-based functionality. With improvements to UI, shortcuts, and general appearance. What is ostensibly Texas Instrument's response to the Numworks is, in my opinion, overpriced and underwhelming. Here are just a few first impressions and comparisons to the Numworks: Some functionality, such as snapping to graphical points of interest and converting between numerical format (ie. built-in >Frac and >Dec toggle), should have been relegated to a free software update for all of the 84 family, but instead is locked behind this new product. The processor is nearly 4x as fast as the 84+CE, yet still only 75% of what the Numworks is advertised at (156Mhz vs 216MHz). Note that I do not have the Evo yet and have not tried it, which is itself a demerit as Numworks reached out sent out a sample to me for free when they first launched. The price. $160 US. $20 for a subscription for their Online Calc. You get 4 free years of the Online Calc with the purchase of a physical one. The Numworks is $125 US with a free browser-based online emulator, free proprietary smartphone emulator app, and free interactive board software (akin to Desmos). If you've had over 7 years to develop a response to the Numworks, and this is the product you're pushing for this price? It does not fill me with excitement. An exciting product would feature dynamic tools, a much faster processing function, and an even higher resolution screen. "Desmos with tactile buttons" would be much more compelling to me as a teacher than what they are currently promising. Alas, perhaps I'll get the chance to try one myself and my tune will change. After all, this is just my first impression from seeing it on their website. submitted by /u/zeroexev29 to r/mathteachers [link] [comments]

TI-84 Evo website is live
https://education.ti.com/en/products/calculators/graphing-calculators/ti-84-evo Still don’t know what CPU it’s running, but this is the first time they’ve actually confirmed it’s going to have TI-BASIC. As you may expect, no ASM support. Bummer. Launch price seems to be 160$ USD? submitted by /u/Ninja_Weedle to r/calculators [link] [comments]

TI-84 Evo leaked
The TI-84 Evo, the latest model in the TI-8x series, has just leaked. TI has yet to announce anything, so this seems to be an accident. We can only now guess that they are getting ready to announce it soon. https://preview.redd.it/a8c7eibqhsfg1.png?width=648&format=png&auto=webp&s=e736f73f0f3a2c6a472cf0d94640d3e23fe9179d It is said to be "3x faster", have "50% more graphing space", and is rumored to have a USB-C port. It'll be available in 7 colors (White, Lavender, Raspberry Metallic, Silver Metallic, Teal, Mint and Pink). And is likely to have an exact math engine like the TI-83 Premium CE. Ants INSIDE the screen of my Ti-84 graphing calculator
Idk man. My life is falling apart. I have painstakingly, religiously been wiping my GC weekly with rubbing alcohol and goodness...my heart sank when I saw baby ants crawling out of my GC and ants inside my GC screen. I'm going to blame this on my sibling who eats inside my room. When I switched my GC on, they started scrambling for their lives. One ant came out of nowhere and bit my hand. Hurts like hell. I'm thinking of either putting my GC in a tight bag to suffocate the ants or putting my GC in a box containing a sweet and lure them all out. I know the government always encourages growing birth rates and the ants thought it was about them. Little mudderfarkers ccb. Like seriously, what do I do about it? I can't afford to buy another GC if the ants continue having seggs in my GC and laying more babies.💩💩 Edit: thx for the innovative solutions. I heard my GC begging for mercy submitted by /u/Dumbiesama to r/SGExams [link] [comments]

TIL in 1964 Texas Instruments, popularly known for creating the TI-84 graphing calculator, created the first laser guidance system for precision guidance munitions, intended for use on F-4 Phantom fighter jets in Vietnam. The company sold its defense business to Raytheon in 1997.

TIFU by saving my graphing calculator from my burning house
We've all heard the question "If your house was burning down what 3 things would you grab?" Some people choose their grandmothers wedding ring, or their birth certificate. Very important things, right? Things you can't live without, RIGHT?? Yeah apparently my dumb ass thought "Oh you know what's really important to me? My fucking TI-84 graphing calculator! Better save THAT!" I wasn't home when the fire started but by the time I got there the fire fighters were able to get my pets out alive, I have two dogs and a cat. They were unconscious when they found them but these hero's gave them doggy mouth to mouth and rushed them to the animal hospital lights and sirens all the way as if they were wounded soldiers. It was honestly incredible and I will never ever forget them! After we got the animals checked in to the hospital and several vets assured me they would be okay I went back to the house to collect "important items". The entire house is basically destroyed so there wasn't much to choose from, but I did grab a bag of clothes (which still smell like smoke after running through the wash 3 times so if anyone has a LPT for getting smoke smell out of clothes let me know) and my graphing calculator which is apparently built Nokia style because somehow that fucker still works. I am a 24 year old woman kicking ass in a mathematics degree program and my family's reaction to this situation flips between "oh honey I'm so sorry about what happened" and "HAHAHA NERD!!" So I don't have any possessions but at least I still have a way to do fucking calculus. TLDR: my house burnt down and the two things I saved were: A bag of clothes (minus socks which I forgot) TI-84 graphing calculator (apparently more important to me than socks) submitted by /u/needmoremangos to r/tifu [link] [comments]
