The “sustainable shopping” trend feels like poor appropriation, and now, I can’t access clothes and housewares.
Now that thrifting has been rebranded as “sustainable shopping” and “the most ethical fashion,” I can’t afford to shop anymore. Thrift stores are now selling necessities for the same cost as buying them new. My shoes are falling apart and if I had $20 to buy them at a thrift store, I’d just buy them new at TJMaxx. Buying secondhand on apps or on Marketplace is an even bigger joke. Buy Nothing groups in my area don’t give away anything useful. I’ll get excited to see clothes on there and then it’ll turn to disappointment when I see it’s free because of all the rips and stains. Clothing swaps have a similar vibe here, it’s all “well you can upcycle the fabric!” Sure, but sewing kits cost money. I now feel like I can’t afford to get healthier because while nutritious food can be affordable and exercise is free, replacing my clothes is too expensive. submitted by /u/Certain-Working1864 to r/povertyfinance [link] [comments]

I upcycle thrifted clothes by painting my illustrations on them with textile paint 🎨
I'm chanel colleaux, a Canadian artist and avid crafter and im passionate about sustainable , slow fashion and unique 1/1 custom pieces with character and charm. It's a super fun hobby of mine to make these ordinary clothes in to interesting art pieces that can be worn , and yes they can be washed. I mostly use jacquard brand textile paint ❤️🎨 I have also been experimenting with eco printing and creating my own fabric dyes out of leaves and plants from my yard . There's just something so dreamy and relaxing about working with textiles. Happy crafting ! submitted by /u/flyagaricon to r/crafts [link] [comments]

A few items I've made upcycling table cloths and blankets from the thrift store
Sweater made from a quilt, shirt made from a lace tablecloth, tote bag made from quilt scraps, sweatshirt made from an old white blanket then dyed pink, backpack (zipper between shell and turtle) made from thifted stuffed animal. I love upcycling and I'm proud to say I haven't bought brand new fabric in months! submitted by /u/GraceJam37 to r/upcycling [link] [comments]
