April scoops: New flavors and spring trends for 15 ice cream brand. What are you looking forward to this month?
T.S. Eliot opined that April is the cruelest month. But the famed poet never had special ice cream flavors from Jeni’s and Graeter’s to look forward to for dessert. Maybe if he had Flying Pig Tracks or Frosted Sugar Cookie brightening his day, his work would be less filled with disillusionment and spiritual emptiness. For the rest of us, there’s fresh spring pints to hunt down. Here’s what I know about recent flavors and what might be on the horizon from 15 notable ice cream brands, according to emails and social media. Please share any intel you have on the ice cream front. What are you looking forward to in April? Alec’s: Mint is always welcome in spring. Alec’s has a Mint Fudge Brownie flavor out to mark the season. Report back if you’ve tried it. I’m also curious if anyone has bought those damn Culture Cups encroaching on my premium pint space at Whole Foods. Baskin-Robbins: Is anyone tired of the Dubai Chocolate trend yet? Apparently not, as Baskin-Robbins reported shortages in November when it featured its Pistachio Chocolate Bar as the flavor of the month. Me? I’d get it as a double scoop with Cherries Jubilee (with that tasty hint of rum) and make it a spumoni. If like me, you missed Dulce de Leche last month, it should still be around, along with some others that have caught my eye recently: Chocolate Chip Cheesecake, Mom’s Makin’ Cookies and Twix Caramel Crunch. Also new: A version of their famed Jamoca Chip for non-dairy folks. I see Old Fashioned Butter Pecan featured prominent on their web page, too. Speaking of flavors your grandparents love, has anyone seen their Rum Raisin in shops? I am sort of obsessed after trying this flavor courtesy of Häagen-Dazs and want to try another version of it. Ben & Jerry’s: There’s a new flavor out — Honey Graham Latte — that I got a sneak taste of when it was a scoop shop exclusive last month. You can read my review (it’s fine) the latest installment of my coffee project, which features seven coffee-related B&J flavors. You can read that later today over on the main ice cream subreddit. I include one of the new Sundaes, too (Mocha Mood Pie). If it’s any indication of overall quality of the line, I’m not excited to try any others, though the Peanut Butter Blondie one seems to have some decent reviews. Blue Bell: If the release of the Honey Vanilla a month or so back didn’t excite you, try the new Brookie a la Mode. I was about to write this off as more Ben & Jerry’s-ification, but having a rich brown sugar base instead of sweet cream for the brownie and chocolate chip cookie pieces makes it more intriguing. I’ll include it in my next online order. That’s available in both pint and half-gallon (honey vanilla is pint only). It’s been a while since Blue Bell has updated its online shipping site. While there are still some holiday flavors hanging around — if you missed Christmas Cookies or Peppermint Bark they are still there — I noticed some new options available. On the half-gallon front, Tin Roof Sundae and Strawberries & Homemade Vanilla have returned. For pints, spring has brought back Java Jolt, Banana Nut and Rum Raisin (I might get my fix after all). Caffe Panna: You still have a chance to order “The Too Chocolatey?” collection if your answer to that question is Nope. The six flavors are Flourless Fudge Brownie, Malted Cookies ’N Cream, Chocolate Olive Oil Stracciatella, Dark Chocolate Turtle, Goober and Minted White Chocolate. The answer for me: Yes. I’ll pass and take wait to see some fresh options for spring. History suggests a Springs Sweet Pack might drop mid-month, or perhaps there will be something for Mother’s Day next month. Here’s hoping it’s not florals… Clementine’s: This is probably the brightest collection out right now that says spring. The Hundred Acre Woods four-pack pays tribute to the world of Winnie the Pooh and friends. This one is available in their local shops and on Goldbelly. The flavors are: Eeyore’s Birthday (birthday cake), Piglet’s Red Balloon (strawberry with raspberry swirl), Silly Old Bear (amber honey) and What Tiggers Love Best (Malt coconut with chocolate flecks). You can buy these as a collection or in the pick-4 or pick-6 options in case you just want to taste one or two. (Note that there’s a $5 uncharge for the non-dairy Tigger flavor.) If you go that route, consider the lovely Strawberries and Cream flavor for spring. Graeter’s: I’m excited for this one. Graeter’s welcomes strawberry season with the return of its April/May rotational flavor, Strawberry Chip (“ripe, juice strawberries with rich dark chocolate for a perfectly balanced indulgence”) and Flying Pig Tracks, a limited-edition flavor created to celebrate Cincinnati’s annual Flying Pig Marathon (with vanilla ice cream and “chocolate fudge swirled hills and peanut butter cup-filled streets”). Want to make it a bundle? Their Easter pack features this pair plus Lemon Meringue Pie, Mint Chip, Cookies & Cream and Black Raspberry Chip. Notice how every collection seems to feature their signature Black Raspberry? I guess it’s fitting for any occasion. Jeni’s: You can find a trio of highly anticipated new spring flavors — Basque Cheesecake with Brambleberry Jam, Black Tie Tiramisu and Key Lime Pie — in scoop shops and online. I know many of us here are already envious seeing the pictures on Reddit. I’m hoping to see these in my local stores soon. Mid-April will bring a little refresh with Frosted Sugar Cookie (which has been spotted early at least a couple of stores) plus a couple of returning flavors: Sweet Cream Biscuits & Peach Jam (which I enjoyed) and Lemon & Blueberries Parfait (which I have waiting in the freezer). Did those last two really go away at all? Häagen-Dazs: They certainly are moving at a pace that befits the new “Go Slow” collection. My Safeway saw the three new pints designed for consumers to pause and savor the ice cream moment back in January. But some on here are still reportedly waiting for some of the flavors to hit their shelves. I enjoyed all three, including Dark Cherry Truffle and Coffee Toffee Almond. But Peanut Butter Brittle for me is an early contender for best new ice cream of 2026. Also keep an eye out for new novelties. I have trouble keeping track of these, but it looks like stores should already have a trio (3-count Cherry Dark Chocolate and Toasted Coconut Crunch bars and 6-count mini Dulce de Leche bars). For April, Salted Caramel Graham Mini Bars are reportedly making their way to shelves. Leopold's: For those hoping for some floral flavors to welcome spring, consider this Georgia ice cream maker's spring pack on Goldbelly (you can also order through their website). The Japanese Cherry Blossom does sound interesting. The other spring tastes: Thin Mints & Cream, Lavender, Pistachio, Honey Almond & Cream and Chocolate Chocolate Chip. McConnell’s: Cinnamon Sticky Bun (which I recently reviewed) is part of the brand’s Spring Bundle, along with McConnell’s’ newest flavor, Peanut Butter Cookies & Cream, plus Chocolate Hazelnut & Brownies and a couple of older flavors: Pistachio & Almond Biscotti and Mint Chip. Salt & Straw: Their Monthly Menu Series still shows the leftovers of Cereal-sly Delicious. But their Upcycled Food series, called Waste Less, will launch Friday to celebrate Earth Month (no longer just a day!) This year's collection features five flavors created using upcycled ingredients to highlight sustainability and food waste reduction. Of course, don’t expect to pay less than 12 bucks even when there’s scraps involved! The flavors are Chocolate Date Tiramisu Stracciatella, Cherry Red Velvet Cheesecake, Chocolate Malted Potato Chip Cupcake, Peanut Butter & Jelly Pound Cake and Rum Raisin Bundt Cake (vegan). Talenti: I don’t know anything new with this gelato mainstay of grocery aisles. If anyone has tried the two latest flavors that launched in February as “Escapes” — Chocolate Hazelnut Crunch Gelato (“Snowed In” escape) and Paradise Passionfruit Sorbetto (“Sun Soaked” escape) — let us know what you think. I haven’t heard great things about the passion fruit. Tillamook: Strawberry has been a classic flavor for this brand. But given its recent shift to airier bases and fewer mix-ins, I’m curious how much fruit we’ll see in the limited-edition Strawberries & Cream. I’ll wait and hear some reviews on this one. Van Leeuwen: I can’t find much coming up from this brand due to its mercurial online presence. But if you are still interested in the Seuss collection — an exclusive at Kroger stores — I saw my local store still had these flavors last time I was in there. Other recent flavors include Dubai Style Chocolate Cone and Strawberry Matcha Latte. On the novelty front, they have some bon-bons out. I never had a bon-bon, so if anyone has tried these, let us know! submitted by /u/madisonguy76 to r/IceCreamHaven [link] [comments]

Vegan (or any) Bakeries w/cakes ready to go (not pre-order)
Update! Thank you to everyone for your great suggestions! I ended up calling GF Sweeties and the owner Satchiko couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. She happily offered to bake it that night. She made a beautiful 3 layer cake with a filling of fresh strawberries and a strawberry cream, and frosted with a cream cheese icing. I typically don't like icing as find it overly sweet, but this was perfect and delicious. I highly recommend them! Help! I need a vegan cake for a birthday party tomorrow (3/19), enough to serve 15 ppl. I'm hoping to find a bakery with grab and go options and prefer to support a small business. Trying to avoid the grocery store frozen mini-cakes. Gloucester, Camden, Salem, Cumberland counties, and willing to drive to Philly or DE if need be. I plan to call ahead to confirm availability, and suggestions that can confirm places that have whole cakes ready to go vs just pastries, cookies, etc. would help tremendously. submitted by /u/Ginger-Snapped3 to r/SouthJersey [link] [comments]

Coconut-base ice creams (dairy-free taste test)
https://preview.redd.it/ge7uxbtvrufg1.jpg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=341ae72ce815617f2fa432fad9f87fd22aa26c0c A lot of ice cream makers seem to like doing dairy-free flavors in January. As far as food-based New Year's resolutions go, this one didn't seem too onerous. So — years after writing off the vegan options that I tried — I decided to give non-dairy a second chance since I have heard good things about coconut cream bases. The ones I tried then (almond, maybe oat or cashew) are undoubtedly being done better now. But the thing that appealed to me with the coconut is the promise of something richer and denser, as the thin finish on those other vegan milks was unappealing. The other thing I wanted to keep in mind is that the flavor of the coconut tends to come through more than the others. The upside? I like coconut. So when I picked out five flavors from Jeni's lineup — as they are well-known for their coconut options — I treated them as I would a collection of dairy pints that feature coconut. It's all about how well that flavor balances with what the pint is promising — and these all have another dessert as inspiration (banana pudding, lemon bar, etc.). I was a bit surprised — especially after enjoying the recent Tropical Bloom flavor — that she didn't lean into anything tropical since coconut loves to play with pineapple, mango, etc. Does Jeni not love pina coladas and getting caught in the rain? Overall verdict? I quite liked the texture, and the flavors — while they wouldn't rank in my Jeni's top tier — were all some shade of good. Below, I am including quick hits, but look for full reviews (and beauty shots) over the next week. I also included two Salt & Straw coconut base flavors I tried earlier in the month. Not as good as Jeni's, but if you're interested search my posts for a full review. Lastly, I'm curious if you have tried coconut cream ice creams. If so, from which brands? Which flavors did you like or not like? Or is there another dairy-free base you prefer? If so, let me know what I should try next. ____________________________________________ TASTE TEST ____________________________________________ JENI'S Banana Cream Pudding: I might have renamed this one to include coconut since it comes through so strongly, but I like it. It's like banana-flavored pudding with a coconut whipped cream and wafer pieces throughout. (8.2/10) Peppermint Patty: I haven't tried the namesake candy in years, but it instantly evoked it with the cool peppermint, which mostly hides the coconut. Chocolate accents work well from the sauce and the cake. (7.9/10) Lemon Bar: This one should be called Lemon Coconut Bar, because the base deserves equal billing. While I could still use more of the curd, it's so puckery and bright it really weaves its web throughout. Shortbread pieces work well. (7.7/10) Cold Brew with Coconut Cream: Here it does get title billing, which is good because there's a ton of it. Too much, though it works really well with the icy coffee sorbet — a clash of textures I feared, then enjoyed. It's like 1/4 coffee to 3/4 coconut, a ratio I would have flipped. (7.3/10) Caramel Pecan Sticky Buns: This is the most disappointing as I get more coconut then the the caramel, brown sugar and butter notes I hope for with pecan. The nuts are well-distributed, but a lot more caramel is needed. I might reassess if I dig deeper and find large pools, as is sometimes the case. (6.6/10) Other Jeni's coconut options: Note to chocoholics: She has two flavors you may be more excited for than I: Dark Chocolate Truffle and Texas Sheet Cake. SALT & STRAW Peanut Butter Brittle with Caramel Fudge: The namesake confection is tasty if you can find it as is the caramel (no real fudge flavor), but they're doled out in miserly fashion, so it's mostly big patches of distinct peanut butter and coconut ice creams, an odd combo that worked well enough. (6.5/10) Bananas Foster with Candied Pecans: All bananas, no Foster. The name got me excited but again the scarcity of the title ingredient is alarming, so you miss the rum-brown butter-spice punch of the sauce in favor of lots of icy banana base (not nearly as creamy and rich as the Jeni's banana). Hello! I wrote here 9 months ago asking if you would be interested in a homemade ice cream cookbook! I have an update!
(I’ll link my original post in the comments) Since 2023 I have been working on a homemade ice cream cookbook. Before drafting a proposal, I recipe tested over 50 traditional ice cream recipes as well as 15 non-dairy and vegan recipes. I reached out to numerous publishers with my proposal and only heard back from one, letting me know to reach back out when my social media follower count was over 25K. Sigh. So I pivoted because I needed folks to be able to make my delicious ice cream as soon as possible. I created a site where folks can buy my individual recipes as well as bundles of recipes. I have a Basics section, including recipes for, but not limited to French Vanilla Bean, The Best Chocolate Ice Cream of Your Life, Pistachio, Malted Peanut Butter, Earl Grey, etc. There is a Fan Favorite section which includes recipes for my Happy Birthday Cake ice cream and one I love called Graham Slam - which is Graham Cracker ice cream with pieces of homemade Graham Cracker Toffee - as well as a few others. There is Deconstructed section which includes recipes for my Deconstructed German Chocolate Cake ice cream, my Deconstructed Snickers Bar ice cream and a few others. I also have a few Bundles right now. One is my Grocery Store Bundle which includes the six flavors I used to sell in grocery stores in Seattle from 2016-2019. The flavors include: French Vanilla Bean, Cookies N Cream, Rocky Road, Lemon Bar, Strawberry Pound Cake and Coffee Caramel. Lastly, I have a Holiday Flavor Bundle which will be taken off come 1/1/2016. The flavors include: Holiday Eggnog, Gingerbread Cookie, Deconstructed Peppermint Bark and Cozy Hot Cocoa If any of you are interested in the link, let me know in the comments! Happy churning! Also, please know, I al so happy to chat about ice cream any day, anytime!🍦 submitted by /u/Sweetlo123 to r/CookbookLovers [link] [comments]

Ice Cream in West Chester
I just stopped in at Yori’s to pick up a cake I’d ordered, and I spotted a shop across the street with cones all over the window, called, simply, “Ice Cream.” They aren’t showing up on Yelp, and I don’t think they’ve been there very long. Does anyone have any idea what this place is about? Is it home made? Something special, like lots of weird flavors or vegan options? Just an ordinary ice cream parlor? I think that with this place, Yori’s, and Kilwin’s, Church Street is now the most fattening street in West Chester! submitted by /u/mspolytheist to r/ChesterCounty [link] [comments]

The lack of vegan ice cream options hurts me 💔
I miss Soy Creamy every day 😢 Not sure if it’s just my TJs but they haven’t had good vegan ice cream options in so long. They have the dairy-free hold the cones and the ice cream sandwiches, which are both FINE, but I long for the days when I used to be able to pick up an actual tub of vegan ice cream at the end of my grocery shopping. (There are none at my store currently—just checked this weekend). Or when they used to have a vegan mochi option! TJs sweet treats for vegans are overall so lacking and disappointing. My store has the vegan banana bread that’s been there forever and that’s basically it. All of these sheet cakes and they couldn’t do ONE that’s vegan? 😞 I know it’s probably annoying to some people to see complaints about lack of vegan options but it sucks to see great vegan options always disappearing and then not being replaced with anything. submitted by /u/gingerspell to r/traderjoes [link] [comments]

Discovered someone in my house added salt to the sugar container, only after I baked 3 cakes and ran out of ingredients
I made 3 cakes: carrot cake for a work potluck, black forest chocolate cake for a birthday, and a vegan orange chocolate cake for cake pops. Mid-way through making the cream cheese frosting, I ran out of powdered sugar, so I grabbed the granulated sugar to grind down. I used that same granulated sugar in all of the cakes. After whipping up 2 icings, and setting the third cake to cool, I cleaned up my bowls and tasted the leftover mixes. All three were absurdly salty, the sodium drowning out the flavors of each cake. Someone in my house must’ve ignored the very obvious ‘granulated sugar’ label and mistakenly dumped salt into the sugar tub. The tub of sugar itself doesn’t taste noticeably salty, but once dissolved, it’s all you can taste. There goes 7 eggs, 9 cups of flour, 4 cups of cocoa, 4 cups of carrots, and 4 hours of my evening. submitted by /u/jempai to r/mildlyinfuriating [link] [comments]

AITA for asking my friends what flavor their wedding cake is?
I am not The OOP, OOP is u/Scaredoflove11 Rebuttal by u/Roeapparently AITA for asking my friends what flavor their wedding cake is? Originally posted to r/AmItheAsshole Thanks to u/czechtheboxes & u/USMCLee for suggesting this BoRU Original Post May 11, 2024 I (22f) am in the wedding party of my friends we will call Em(25f) and Roe(25m) who will be getting married in about 2 months. I have been really excited for the wedding since it'll be an opportunity for all the friends from college to get together for the first time in 2 years. Not to mention Em and Roe are my best friends, or at least I thought they were. We have a discord for all the wedding stuff and they have a channel about food. They've been really good about being open about the food they intend to have at the reception including vegan/vegitarian/gluten free options for everyone and answering questions so I didn't think there would be any contention if I asked a question. Anyway, about 4 days ago I posted a message into the discord asking "Hey, what flavor is the cake gonna be? I wanna mentally prepare myself lol." I think looking back my choice of extra words is what caused all this, but I meant it in the sense that I have a long documented dislike of chocolate flavored foods like cake or ice cream. So I added it in the event the cake was chocolate. I recieved a private message back that the cake would be chocolate and that if I had a problem with it then I could "shove it" cause it was their wedding not mine. And i felt really taken aback by this response. Never did I mention that I would have been upset and I certainly wouldn't have put up a stink about it. Its exactly like Em had said, it's their wedding. I explained as much and tried to apologize for any offending I did but she got even more defensive and started basically blasting me for implying that she was offended and I was just left overall very confused. I gave it two days before I tried to apologize again and smooth it over figuring she may have just been having a bad day but I got shut down again telling me she didn't need my apology cause nothing was wrong and I needed time stop trying to make it seem like shit was wrong between us and to just drop it. I texted Roe to see if I could gauge what was going on since he and I have always had an open dialogue about things like this but he basically just told me he couldn't talk to me right now and I have to imagine its cause Em told him not to. Its been 2 days since then and I'm just really confused. This whole thing has made me want to drop out of the wedding party and honestly not go at all. I wish Roe would talk to me and Em would be honest. I can't help but think maybe I just don't get how stressful planning a wedding is and like maybe theyve gotten pushback from other people on other things and somehow its being taken out on me? Or is it really a big no no to ask stuff like this? I don't know? This is the first wedding i'll have ever gone to, so am I the asshole? VERDICT: ASSHOLE In the comments "Roe" appears Roe is u/Roeapparently Here May 11, 2024 Hey Izzy. Not surprised you didn’t share the whole story. You never do. Just like last year’s surprise party for Em (tldr: Izzy here spoiled the surprise and tried to claim my present was hers). I’m “Roe”, the groom to be. I don’t do Reddit, but my best man does and frequents this thread. He saw this post and it was so obvious it’s you. This whole cake thing did happen but it is NOT the whole story and did NOT go the way Izzy claims. First off, cake was not her only complaint. You refused to have a joint bachelor/bachelorette dinner cause “I have poor taste”, you said my suit was tacky cause I wanted white and not traditional black, you whined about the bridesmaids dresses being purple cause you wanted Ivory. Any decision we’ve made there’s ALWAYS a complaint. And Em has done nothing but be patient and try and find common ground. She should not have to change her wedding choices for you. Second, we NEVER told you to “shove it”. Em only messaged you privately because she was tired of having to argue in the group chat. Everyone else is tired of your bullshit too so we didn’t want to bother them with it. It’s a cake. Eat it or don’t. You have hated me ever since I joined the friend group. And that’s fine! But you will NOT ruin Em’s day because of your pettiness. If you care about her, then honor her decisions. Of COURSE Em is different! Cause she grew tf up! All of us did except you! My god you’re fucking 22, stop acting like a spoiled teenager, chocolate cake will not kill you (btw asshole I’m 26 not 25, pay attention). I wasn’t angry about this until you decided to go to the internet for pity. It’s pathetic and immature. For the record, Em double checked my response. She signed off on it. Get it together. OOP Its pathetic and immature to anonymously post asking for advice on Reddit but you coming here starting shit and posting my real name isn't? Okay, Marcus, since we're not hiding anymore how does it feel to have your shit aired for real? Here's how I KNOW Em didn't sign off, becuase she never would have agreed to using my real name. You're just trying to get me upset at her too. She's my best friend, and I should have known you'd do this. You always try to manipulate us into being mad at each other. Case in point when I had planned this really awesome dinner for just her and I and you had to plan her suprise party for the same day. I just wanted alone time with my best friend but you couldn't wait one day for the party. Em has known me far longer than you, and no offense, I'm sure I know her better than you do. But I've kept my mouth shut because I love her and just want her to be happy. I complain about everything? Then how come I've never said anything about the hundreds of times you've made Em cancel plans with me to go hang out with you? I just wanted my bff to spend a little time with me. We're not allowed to have sleepovers anymore cause it "makes you uncomfy" or take a girls trip for the weekend because "too expensive". Sorry you can't take care of her like I can. Some of us can afford rent. Clearly this was never about the cake and more so about you hating me. I was fine when you joined the friend group, but you clearly weren't fine with mine and Ems relationship. You've been the same towards some of her other friends who I'm sure would agree. Get a life Marcus. Stop trying to take mine. Roeapparently She was fine using your name. You brought this to the internet, not us. If you didn't want this attention, don't post. The plan was for you to distract her while we setup the party by taking her to a movie, not going to the movies then taking her to dinner and TELLING HER OF THE PARTY. We waited hours expecting y'all to be back. I have never once made Em cancel. She always did that on her own, and not frequently at all. You have had plenty of time alone with her. Just because she spends time with me too doesn't mean I'm forcing her to. And yes, a trip to multiple countries across Europe is very much too expensive. We already live paycheck to paycheck, which you know. I know money isn't a concern for you but it very much is for us. Not all of us have apartments paid for by dad. Nobody else seems to think the same things about me, and if I'm wrong I will gladly listen and change. But that requires communication directly, not anonymous Reddit posts. You may have known her longer, but you clearly don't know Em well. You fail to see how miserable your comments and attitude have made her these past few months. For her sake, knock it off. OOP "Paid by daddy" real mature asshole. You know I work hard like everyone else. Its not my fault my parents made better decisions than yours and can actually help their kids. And of course I wasn't just gonna take her to the movies on her birthday a rouse or not it was still her birthday and shes my friend and I love her and wanted her to an actually decent meal other than the shitty pizza you bought for her. Also yeah maybe you didn't tell Em to cancel, but knowingly asking for plans when we had them is basically the same thing. Before you, she was fine. She had everything she needed. And for all of you in the comments saying I have a crush or want to fuck Em, you're delusional and know nothing about me. We're best friends. I love her. She loves me. Not my fault we have natural chemistry that everyone over the internet can feel. But its not like that. Marcus you're an asshole. You've been an asshole since day one. Just admit you're not the guy who can give her what she needs and move the fuck on and leave us alone. ~ MHH370 Hey u/Scaredoflove11 did you really make a fuss because you wanted the bridemaid's dress to be ivory instead of purple? Also u/Roeapparently did you really make your fiance cancel sleepovers because it made you uncomfortable? Roeapparently No. I never made Em cancel anything. I'm fine with her having sleepovers. Izzy wanted to do it at our apartment and kept begging Em to have me sleep on the couch so I wouldn't ruin "girls night". For the record, Em shut it down not me. She's capable of making her own decisions, I trust her to set her boundaries. If I came off as uncomfortable, Izzy never mentioned it till now ImissBagels Does Em even still want Izzy there? Because Izzy is sounding more and more unhinged. How did she try to steal your bday present to Izzy? Roeapparently Em still wants Izzy there. they've been friends for years. I won't make her kick her out, but I'm starting to reach the point where I want it. And no she didn't steal it. She claimed she purchased the gift cause "i was too poor to afford it". It was a rather expensive purse Em eyed once while shopping but couldn't get at the time, so I saved for it. FINAL COMMENT BY u/Roeapparently You're proving my point. I'm not gonna argue over Reddit anymore over this, especially if you're gonna talk about my parents like that when you know full well why they aren't rich. Either message us in private or drop it all together. If this is how you really feel, don't bother coming to the wedding. My partner's increasingly allergic to chocolate and misses chocolate cake, but most carob recipes I see are paleo, vegan, or for dogs. Suggestions?
What it says on the tin! His allergy used to be mild enough that he would just power through it, like lactose intolerant folks defiantly eating cheese and ice cream despite the consequences, but now it's bad enough now that even getting frosting on his skin can give him hives. He can't even smell it too closely. What he misses most is chocolate cake. He did some research and very politely, and somewhat sheepishly, asked if I could make him a carob cake. When I looked for recipes though, they're all directed towards either dogs, or people using carob as a chocolate substitute because they're vegan or on the paleo diet. I'm not knocking on those recipes, it's just that I'm having a really hard time finding a "normal" cake that just substitutes in carob. If you don't have any recipe links, do you know how much carob powder I could substitute for cocoa powder in a regular chocolate cake recipe? submitted by /u/anxiousthespian to r/Baking [link] [comments]

AITA for telling my son his grandma eats cow (not "beef")?
My partner and I have been vegan for years. We have a 4 year old son who eats the same things as us, so for now is also plant-based. We have always said that our goal will be to instill vegan values in him, but that ultimately, once he gets to the age where he starts to have more autonomy, he won't be punished or anything for choosing to consume animal products when presented with the opportunity--that will be his choice. Though of course it would be a (secret) bummer for us, lol. But that's why we refer to him as plant-based rather than vegan, until he chooses that label for himself, basically. The rest of our family is not vegan and generally doesn't try to be accommodating regarding that either. For example, my MIL insisted on throwing a bday party for my husband, but then mentioned the morning of that she would be serving pizza, cake, and ice cream (non vegan) and that we should bring our own versions to the party "if we wanted to eat some." Which wouldn't have been unreasonable except for that it was a party she was throwing FOR my husband. Just little things like that. ANYWAY. Last weekend we went to a BBQ at a relative's house. Per usual, we brought our own food. Veggie dogs. My son was sitting on my MILs lap with his veggie dog and she was eating a (beef) burger. She asked him if he wanted a bite. This is the first time I've seen her offer him meat. She wasn't trying to be sneaky about it. I think that by asking in front of me, she was testing the waters a bit regarding our earlier statements about him having the choice to eat animal products if he wanted to. He said, "is it cow or veggie?" (we eat plenty of veggie burgers, veggie nuggets, etc so he knows to ask what things are made of) MIL said "no honey, it's beef." He said "Beef?" She said "yes, it's good! Try a bite." I was sitting across the table and watching my son process her answer, which in my opinion was intentionally indirect, so I offered, "beef is another word for cow." My son said, "cow???" and pulled a kind of shocked face, which actually surprised me because he knows most other people eat animals, but he acted like this was unheard of lol. My MIL gave me such a dirty look. My son did not try her burger, ate a few more bites of his veggie dog, and went to play. My MIL got up and went inside and I didn't see her for the rest of the BBQ. Later, my FIL called my husband berating him for allowing me to "drive a wedge between your mother and her only grandchild by making him think she is an animal killer or something" (this is close to verbatim), that I can't "keep him from eating normal food" forever, and I should apologize. We don't think I did anything wrong, but my BIL texted my husband also, said he thinks their parents are overreacting but that I should have not been "so specific about what beef is" and that it DOES seem like I was trying to throw my MIL under the bus. AITA? EDIT: thank you all for your feedback and for your NTA judgment lol. I realize no one is checking this post anymore but in case they are I thought I'd address 2 things: We have introduced him to the words beef and pork before, but he is 4, and since they aren't regularly used in our house, I guess he forgot. Regarding his nutrition: before I made this post, I had no idea that there were certain nutrients we get less of when we cut out certain foods. This is startling and alarming news to me. I immediately shared it with my husband who also had no idea. Then, I left an urgent voicemail for my pediatrician, because I hadn't thought to tell her (or my OB during pregnancy for that matter) that our family followed any particular diet, even when she specifically asked me what our diet was like at home. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for bringing this shocking news (that is rarely ever discussed when veganism is brought up) to my attention. You have undoubtedly saved my child's life. submitted by /u/butt3rnutbabe to r/AmItheAsshole [link] [comments]

Of course vegans raise vegan kids. All (good) parents guide diet choices for their kids, which is why even omni kids don't get to eat cake for breakfast and ice cream for dinner. And our choices aren't just about health, but instilling our ethics.

AITA for not having my wedding to be all vegan?
I(26F) and my fiance(28M) are getting married in January 2022. We have everything planned like music, food, desert, drinks and who will be attending. Our food choice will be between chicken or steak, with a salad to start. We thought it would be a fun idea for those that do not want cake to have a make your own sundae station. My fiance has a sister(24F) that is a vegan. When we first met and got to know one another, I was open to trying vegan restaurants. Well, when I would suggest a restaurant that had vegan options, she would decline. She is the only vegan guest that will be attending the wedding. We let her choose a dish that she wanted to have for the wedding and ice cream that is vegan friendly. Well, future MIL and FIL called my fiance and suggested maybe changing the menu to all vegan. He went nuts and told them no, he was not going to change the menu because of his sister. His sister started texting and blaming me for being controlling and manipulative. His parents are now thinking about not helping with the wedding and leaving it to us and my family. Fiance thinks they are being unfair and is not speaking to them. AITA for not having my wedding to be all vegan? submitted by /u/Afraid-Actuator9341 to r/AmItheAsshole [link] [comments]

WIBTA for having a vegan cake for my birthday, despite my brothers refusal to eat it?
This was going to be a throwaway but I like it so I’m keeping it. Simply, I have three younger brothers, all of whom are on the autism spectrum, and one is also celiac. I have been vegan since before my last birthday (I’m currently 25F), but while my family had a cake, I ate a bunch of strawberries. This year I found a baker who makes the most amazing vegan and celiac friendly ice cream cake. They are local, and are fire affected. (I’m an Australian) they didn’t loose their bakery, but they’ve lost a lot of business. So I decided to buy one for my birthday, even though it cost a lot more than I would normally spend. Usually I have a $10 cake from the local shops. I told my family (group chat) and my celiac brother immediately was excited to be able to be included (he was diagnosed after my last birthday). My mum said that my other brothers won’t eat it, and I said it’s fine, I was going to them some muffins or donuts (they love donuts) in case they didn’t want to try it. Although they struggle to try new foods, as is common with ASD, they have been more willing to make attempts as they’ve both gotten older. One recently got his first job, so they’ve been making big strides. My mum said I wasn’t being respectful of their needs. I explained again I wanted a cake that I would enjoy for my birthday, and I was getting things for them. All of my brothers read these messages. One sent a message that said ‘I like donuts’ and had a picture of a donut. I sent one with a gif of a donut and moved on. To me- problem solved. My mum now says that my brother sending that message was just an attempt to keep the peace (they really hate conflict). She has also said I’m happy to use my brothers when it suits me (she’s referring to the fact I went on to study special education, and was recently awarded a position leading trainings for teachers on supporting students on the spectrum, as well as working as an Autism specialised teacher. I also just completed my masters, with a focus on teaching students with ASD.) but won’t actually support them in the real world outside my work. I’m starting to think she’s right. So reddit, WIBTA if I continue with my plans to have a vegan cake. TLDR; I got a vegan cake for my birthday, my mum says I’m being exclusionary to my brother with ASD. EDIT: Ok this got a little bigger than I thought. I have read every comment, and I will slowly reply to questions. To answer some common ones; I don’t feel comfortable sharing the name of the specific bakery, since it’s local. I’m really really happy that people want to support Australian businesses. I highly recommend the Instagram pages; Spend with them and Empty Esky. Both of these pages highlight business across all three affected states that have been impacted by the bushfires. There is also Buy from the bush, which highlights business that are affected by drought. I’m sure there’s others, but these are the three I’ve been following. I brought my own cake because of the cost of it. My mum isn’t in the best financial state, and it’s recently gotten worse as my younger two brothers (twins) turned 18 and she stopped receiving child support from our father. He hasn’t been in the picture for 15 or so years. My mum has no issue with me being vegan, when it’s just the two of us we always go to vegan places. The potential issues for my brothers is that it’s something different and new, which can be very overwhelming for people on the spectrum. They are very sensory, so very sensitive to taste and texture. It’s not that they’re being fussy brats or anything like that. They have genuine neurological difficulties with things, including food. My relationship with my brothers is the best it’s ever been. We argued a bit when I was younger, but I moved out at 17 and that solved a lot of issues. I’m a very social person (one brother jokes I got all the social genes and left nothing for them.) so moving out meant I could have as many parties as I wanted. submitted by /u/veganbirthdaycake to r/AmItheAsshole [link] [comments]
