Scientists found that the vitamin D supplement millions of people take is quietly lowering the only form of vitamin D that activates immune defense against viruses
Hundreds of millions of people take vitamin D supplements for immune support, and many of them, particularly vegans, vegetarians, and people prescribed high-dose supplements by doctors, are taking the form called D2. A meta-analysis of 11 randomized controlled trials just found that vitamin D2 actively lowers the body's levels of vitamin D3, the more effective form, in some participants dropping D3 below the levels seen in people taking no supplement at all. A separate transcriptome study from the same research group found that only vitamin D3 activates the interferon genes responsible for the immune system's first-line defense against viruses and bacteria. D2 does not. The two forms appear on labels with identical doses and are treated as interchangeable in most clinical guidelines. The research says they are not. submitted by /u/soulpost to r/HotScienceNews [link] [comments]

Vitamin D is a game changer
I have anxiety and I am pretty much agoraphobic so I stay inside all day. This led to me developing a vitamin d deficiency without even noticing so when I got bloodwork done I was in the critical. Now I’ve been taking vitamin d for a month now and it honestly has made a huge difference in terms of my mood. My irritability and anxiety has improved a ton where I can go outside more often without experiencing a sudden flight or fight mode. And I even greeted someone at my local gym. I highly recommend trying it for anyone indoors most of the time. I take 5,000 IU but there’s different ones but get the one with k3! submitted by /u/Otherwise-Setting852 to r/Anxiety [link] [comments]

Vitamin D has changed my life
I am a 22 year old male who has suffered from chronic fatigue for the past maybe 5 years but not to the absolutely debilitating extent of actual chronic fatigue syndrome. My life revolved around being able to get an afternoon nap and being able to get 9+ hours of sleep a night. I could wake up at 11am and fall asleep easily at 2pm. It was absolutely frustrating. Did a couple tests 2 years ago as suggested by a doctor namely fbc, thyroid, b12 among a few others which all came back normal. But not vitamin D. This year I decided I had enough and requested a vit D test. Came back at 16 ng/ml. Started supplementing 50 000iu a week with k2 and magnesium. Noticed a change in the first day which I chalked up to placebo as didn't think levels could improve so quickly. It has now been a week and I am in disbelief at how my life has changed. I feel normal and can easily stay awake during the afternoon and only get tired close to bedtime. It's so surreal I'm afraid to jinx it. I'm beyond grateful. I always wondered how my friends could power through a full day and night with worse sleeping patterns than me and how could I be so fatigued in my 20's. Turns out it was vitamin D. submitted by /u/Icewolf496 to r/Supplements [link] [comments]

Your vitamin D is probably doing nothing.
took me an embarrassingly long time to figure this out so figured i'd share. i was on 2000 IU daily for probably two years. label said 2000, my doctor said 2000, the RDA basically says 2000. tested my 25-OH D and came back at 28 ng/mL. my doctor said "that's sufficient, you're fine." and technically she was right, the official cutoff is 20 ng/mL, so 28 clears the bar. what nobody told me is that the 20 ng/mL threshold was established specifically for bone health. that's it. it was never meant to represent optimal levels for immune function, mood, testosterone, any of the other systems vitamin D is actually involved in. most of the functional medicine literature and a growing number of researchers treat 40 to 60 ng/mL as the real target for overall health outcomes. i was sitting at 28 convinced i was fine. problem two was timing. vitamin D is fat soluble. this is printed on every bottle and then completely ignored in terms of what it actually means. fat soluble means it needs dietary fat to absorb properly through the gut. one of the absorption studies found roughly 50% greater uptake when D3 was taken with a high-fat meal versus fasted. i was taking mine first thing in the morning with my other supplements, no food. so not only was my dose probably too low, i was absorbing maybe half of it anyway. problem three, K2. when D3 increases calcium absorption from the gut, K2 (specifically MK-7) is what directs that calcium toward bone instead of soft tissue. the two aren't just commonly stacked for marketing reasons, the mechanistic case for pairing them is solid. i wasn't taking K2 at all. so i switched. 5000 IU D3 with 100mcg K2 MK-7, taken with dinner which is my biggest meal. tested 90 days later and came back at 47 ng/mL. i've tested four more times since and been consistently in the 40 to 55 range. that single change, no lifestyle overhaul, nothing else different, moved my levels almost 20 points. just to confirm it wasn't placebo i actually ran a dumb experiment where i dropped back to 2000 IU for 8 weeks to see what happened. levels fell back to 34 ng/mL. went back up to 5000 IU, rebounded to 48 on the next test. so yeah, the dose was the issue the whole time. the thing i keep seeing is people say "i take vitamin D" like that's the end of the sentence. what dose, what form, when, with what, have you ever tested to confirm it's doing anything. those details are everything with a fat-soluble compound. most people's protocol is two years of swallowing a capsule that absorbs at half capacity and keeps their levels in a range that technically avoids deficiency but doesn't actually do much. test your 25-OH D if you haven't. it's cheap to add to a panel. get your levels, not a doctor's reassurance that you're probably fine. wrote a longer version of this with all my actual test results if you want the full breakdown, link's in my profile EDIT: if you're reading this later, the key points are: vitamin D3 absorption depends heavily on taking it with dietary fat, dosage is highly individual (2000 IU is often not enough for many people), and blood testing for 25-hydroxyvitamin D is the only way to confirm effectiveness. most guidelines define ≥20 ng/mL as “sufficient” for bone health, but many experts and studies suggest a broader optimal range closer to ~30–60 ng/mL depending on the outcome measured. taking vitamin D with a fat-containing meal can significantly improve absorption, and factors like body weight, timing, and co-nutrients (like vitamin K2 and magnesium) can influence results. submitted by /u/Timely_Ad8989 to r/Supplements [link] [comments]

Vitamin D… is killing me
Started taking vitamin d + k2 (4,000 iu) a few weeks ago to increase levels from 38 ng/ml to help with depression/fatigue/adrenal issues. I felt an immediate boost within a few days that quickly turned into feeling terrible. Brain fog, fatigue/weakness, increased depression, feeling like I was going to pass out, irritability… My doctor insisted it wasn’t the vitamin d but when I stopped taking it I felt so much better. I tried again without K2, titrating up 1,000 iu a week and taking magnesium complex/electrolytes with it. While it isn’t as terrible as it was the first time I tried, every time I increase it, the symptoms just get worse. I feel like I’m PMSing and hungover. Super odd since it is typically so well tolerated ): I’ve finally gotten to 4,000 iu and want to push through if it can help in the long term. Edit: Thanks for all the advice. Sorry if the title was a bit dramatic (I can’t change it). I just didn’t feel heard from my doctors and wanted to see possible causes. submitted by /u/AffectionateBad2912 to r/Supplements [link] [comments]

TIFU by thinking my severe vitamin D deficiency was just megadepression for five years
for reference i’m 25M just posting here because it is pretty life changing for the past five years my fatigue has been so bad it feels like my life has revolved around when i’m going to be able to nap next. i had to take a nap on my lunch break every single day; even when it was -10° outside i’d wait for my car to warm up so i could get 30 minutes of sleep in before facing the rest of my shift even directly after 12 or 14 hours of sleep i would think “man i could definitely go to bed right now”. i also gained like 20-30 lbs because i couldn’t get a gym routine down. i’ve had anxiety and depression pretty bad in the past and a lot of the symptoms are consistent (as fatigue, memory loss, and depression are symptoms of vitamin D deficiency) so i just thought “well fuck, it’s really hitting me hard huh” and did fucking nothing about it also, i think my fucking bones were getting brittle. every time i get up i can feel a deep bone ache in my hands or feet or knees or any part that sticks out really anyways i finally got bloodwork done a couple months ago. i don’t often go to the dr because i’m chinese (lol) and i just don’t go in unless i’m actively dying or something. but my partner finally convinced me the normal range for vitamin d levels is between 30-100 ng/mL, with deficiency being under 20, and severe deficiency being under 12. dawg my level was 9 ng/mL. so i saw this and think hmm that seems low! and then my doctor says yeah so this is probably it dude! heres a shitton of vitamin D for the next eight weeks! and HERES WHERE I REALLY FUCKED UP, i thought i had taken labs before so i looked up my past results from years and years ago and the level was EIGHT. 8 ng/mol. i don’t know why i didn’t follow up with this, i guess i must have thought it wasn’t that bad so i have had a severe deficiency for AT LEAST FIVE YEARS that i could have fixed ages ago. just the time loss makes me so sad and angry because i’ve sacrificed so much of my life and my hobbies/interests to sleeping all the goddamn time anyways, today marked the last 50,000 iu vitamin D pill that i’ve taken over the past eight weeks. and my fucking life has changed! i don’t feel like ass all the time!!! i can wake up in the morning after eight hours of sleep and stay awake the whole day!!!! i can’t express how life changing it’s been to get some energy back. it was like i was living partially asleep for my whole life i’ve already made a workout and meal plan for the upcoming week. i just generally feel so hopeful for my future when i think about how many things i can do in a day now. another good part is that i’m relatively young so hopefully the bone density thing will resolve in a year or so anyways GET YOUR LABS DONE!!!! and take your vitamins, especially if you live in a northern area TL;DR i lost years of my life to sleep because i thought the fatigue from my vitamin d deficiency was just depression submitted by /u/skytreegrasss to r/tifu [link] [comments]

I Just Learned Why Vitamin D Alone Might Be Doing More Harm Than Good…
I came across something recently that genuinely surprised me, and I’m honestly wondering how many people are taking vitamin D the “simple way” without realizing there’s a whole system behind it. A lot of people assume vitamin D is just vitamin D …you take it, you get the benefits. But the truth is, vitamin D does not work properly unless you also have enough magnesium and vitamin K2, and if you are missing those, you may not only be wasting your supplement, but you also be unintentionally increasing certain risks. Here’s the breakdown of how the system actually works: 1. Vitamin D3 helps absorb calcium Vitamin D3 increases calcium absorption from food and supplements. If you’re low on vitamin D, calcium absorption is poor which is straightforward. 2. Vitamin K2 tells calcium where to go This is the part most people miss. Vitamin K2 acts like a traffic controller, directing calcium to: Bones and teeth and away from arteries and soft tissues Without enough K2, calcium can end up depositing where it shouldn’t, which can contribute to arterial calcification. 3. Magnesium activates vitamin D Magnesium is needed for the conversion of vitamin D into its active form. And here’s the kicker: about half of people are magnesium deficient, which means even if you’re taking vitamin D, it might not even be activating properly. So what happens if you take D alone? Taking vitamin D without magnesium and K2 can: Increase calcium absorption without proper regulation Stress your magnesium stores Reduce vitamin D effectiveness over time Potentially contribute to arterial calcification. I’m not trying to scare anyone, but this feels like one of those things that’s so common and so overlooked that it deserves a bit more awareness. If you’re supplementing vitamin D, it might be worth checking whether your routine includes the other pieces that actually make it work. submitted by /u/friend_unfriend to r/Supplements [link] [comments]

I said 'vitamin d' in class yesterday.
Edited for spelling* We were having a somewhat casual conversation as they were filing back in from lunch and joking about school 'nutrition.' I (56f) told them I am vitamin d deficient followed by telling them that I am 56 years old and it took me that long to become 'vitamin d deficient.' I got completely roasted for it. Freshman class. Such a rookie move for year 27. Fortunately we got back on track. This was day 7. It's going to be a long semester. 😂 submitted by /u/Naive-Aside6543 to r/Teachers [link] [comments]

Vitamin D changed my personality
I started taking vitamin D because my blood tests showed a deficiency and…. It’s been weird. I am an introvert by nature but lately I’ve just been so socially starved. I went to the dentist the other day and I was SO chatty it was weird. I have also been so affection starved and I still don’t like people touching me but where am I gonna get affection??? I used to be very physically active and because I’ve had health issues, I became a lot less active. I have long walks nowadays and have been on so many hikes since starting it’s very unusual for me. I have a bunch of mental health issues and compared to before, where I was depressed all the time but have less intense emotions, I now have moments of not feeling depressed but when I am depressed my emotions are ramped up to 200. I can’t stop crying and often do so uncontrollably. Also I have been feeling less depersonalised and derealised and dissociated. I most likely have ADHD and I’ve also noticed a ramp up in ADHD symptoms like I can’t sit still and I can’t focus on anything unless I am hyperfocusing. And geesh my libido has been through the roof crazy. I can’t stop thinking about sex even though I don’t want to have sex. submitted by /u/Afraid-Record-7954 to r/VitaminD [link] [comments]

Is It Me, or is Vitamin D Really That Good?
I’ve been taking vitamin d3 supplements for awhile now. About 3 weeks or going on. I’ve been taking a lot of other supplements for as long as I can remember. Multivitamin, fish oil, herbal medicine, creatine, etc… but vitamin d3 is a complete game changer. Or is it just placebo? Ever since adding JUST vitamin d in my diet, I can tell you that I: Do not want to smoke weed as much Don’t want to have pointless sex Am able to laugh more I feel more present and conscious I am able to focus on things more easily I find myself wanting to try new things and I feel more balanced as an individual overall. I initially started taking vitamin d supplements for testosterone, but oh my goodness. Is this all placebo? I’ve heard that vitamin d is essentially a hormone. I’m also a black man, and I’ve read somewhere that over 72 percent of black people in the USA are deficient in vitamin d, which blew my mind. I’ve also read that people who are deficient in vitamin d are more likely to be addicted to opioids. Man! Vitamin D is the truth it seems like. submitted by /u/jaahrome to r/Biohackers [link] [comments]
