Any ideas how to go about broaching this? For the first time in Trinidad and Tobago’s history, women are holding all three of the highest political offices, Prime Minister, Opposition Leader, and President all at the same time. Kamla Persad-Bissessar just won the general election and will be Prime Minister again, while Pennelope Beckles-Robinson is stepping in as Opposition Leader, and Christine Kangaloo continues as President. It’s honestly incredible to see an entire country's political leadership made up of women, especially in a region where politics has traditionally been male-dominated. Growing up Caribbean, I know how significant this moment is. Change feels slow sometimes, but moments like these really do show that progress is happening. I can say first hand that the leaders of both parties are the defacto leaders with very little others in the party having as much influence as they are. A few weeks ago on the Todd McShay show, Eagles GM Howie Roseman talked a lot about forming the championship team, his path to becoming a GM, his philosophy. But buried in the middle of the video (starting at 12:39, until 13:56) was a strong statement about the Eagle's policies towards signing players who have committed violence against women. It was way too long to fit in the title (sorry for my butcher work) but I love his thoughts on the subject: “We have some objective things that I can’t even overrule, and they’re ours, you know. Like for one, violence against women. It’s just not for us. I won’t even watch ‘em, I don’t even wanna talk about it, it just is dealbreakers for us. So I can’t go, ‘but he’s really good, and he did it ten years ago, and he learned from it’ — it’s just doesn’t work for us. I got 4 kids. I want them to be able to walk in the locker room and me not have to go, ‘skip over that locker.’ Now that doesn’t mean we’ve got perfect guys. They’re from different backgrounds, you know, some pop off more than others. Our head coach does that sometimes — you know, he’s my guy! But I think for us, having good people, having people you can rally around… I think our two championship teams had really good people. And now it’s like — you can’t tell me that we can’t win with good people, like we can’t be at the top of the mountain with good people. And it’s the same off the field.” I loved the part about wanting to be proud of each player in front of his kids. Yeah yeah, I got it from a TikTok but it hit home for me. Especially having experienced so many men express rage as a result of my lack of interest in them, my unashamed happiness with myself, my polite rejections of their advances. It’s still jarring to me that I have said some variation of, “I’m no longer interested in getting to know you anymore, but I genuinely wish you well in your future,” and have had so. many. men. desperately try to shred my self-esteem in response. Majority would tell me how disgusting looking I am. Many have told me I’m a terrible person. One went as far to tell me that my job (as a teacher) doesn’t make a difference in the world and that I should stop teaching altogether. Some have pushed it even further to tell me that my life doesn’t matter, that I deserve bad things, or some veiled threat of how “karma will get me.” So so many of them have told me that they are “above my standards.” And it never fucking dawns on them that I get to set my standards all by my goddamn self. I know not every woman/person finds peace in solitude, but it’s incredibly eye-opening to know how angry some men will get when they see us living in content, or god forbid in joy, by ourselves. And with their rage, they only push us further away... Anyways, what are your thoughts? Can you relate?
