So basically, my ex girlfriend and I separated 7 years ago, we have a daughter together while I have 2 daughters from a previous relationship. We have both moved on with our lives (I'm due to marry in 18 months and she got engaged last Christmas) and we have shared custody of our daughter 50:50. ​ On the days I have my daughter, I have to collect and leave her to school and she would organise the other days, which means I have to leave work early on days and arrive late on days. Thankfully my employer has been very understanding and has accomodated my situation as long as hours are made up, which would involve me being available on weekends for emergencies. Not an ideal situation, but it works. ​ Anyways, the ex has taken up a job 100 miles away and her plan is to commute daily. I have my opinions on that, but not my monkey, not my circus. She had arranged for her dad to collect daughter on her days and what seems like a noble idea and a great solution, reality has set in and he finds his days are restricted either collecting daughter or leaving to school, and the novelty has passed and has pretty much told her that he won't be as available as he promised. Now this leaves her pretty much up shit creek as she has noone else to call upon to collect and leave to school. ​ She has asked me to work from home 3-4 days per week which would allow her to continue her role 100 miles away and ensure daughter is collected on time each day. Because of studying and work, we've taken things really slowly and only just recently became official. As we'd gone official, I decided to invite him to my sister's 21st birthday party. It was a huge party at my parent's house back in my home town. Both Matt and I work and live (separately) about an hour away. Wed been at the party for about an hour when Carly arrived with her parents. I was excited to see her as I'd been meaning to get back in touch since I'd moved back. The timing had never been right. I met up with Carly this morning at a coffee shop in our home town. She wasn't happy to be there but I'm over her feelings after the past week I've had. I sat her down and asked her to give me her side of the story. I told her exactly what Matt had said to me and asked for her to explain everything. Carly met Matt last year, not long before I moved back to the state. A mutual friend in the building they both work in invited Matt to after work drinks and that's when they met. Carly thought he was cute and started flirting with him. Side bar: Matt is awful at picking up flirting cues. It took weeks of me flirting with him until he realised and asked me out. This is something I always find amusing because Matt himself is really outgoing with a lot of charisma. I have 2 nieces, Eloise is 7 and Harper is 5. I work from home and have the most flexible schedule so I handle school pick up for the girls, I’m the first point of contact for the school, and I’ve been chaperoning on field trips lately. Eloise was diagnosed with anxiety and her mom claims she has severe ADHD, which hasn’t been diagnosed. Eloise is a completely normal 7 year old. Harper, on the other hand, actually has some type of severe attention disorder and possibly a stomach issue. I am called to pick her up at least once a week because of diarrhea. She wears pull ups at school due to frequent poop accidents. Her classroom has 21 students and 3 teachers and one of those teachers has been unofficially assigned to be Harper’s 1-1 because she constantly wanders off. She doesn’t respond when you call her. She’s oblivious to everything around her. She doesn’t share. She will move through groups of people almost without realizing they’re there. She can’t sit at circle time long enough for her teachers to read a story even when they give her toys to play with or let her sit in her teacher’s lap. She is not allowed on field trips unless either I or one of her parents comes with her. Her school’s developmental specialist has come in to observe her and try to get her to participate with the rest of the class, or even just sit down long enough to eat her snack or lunch, with no success. Despite all of this, Harper is reading at a 2nd grade level and doing math at a 1st grade level. Harper has been kicked out of 2 preschools because they can’t handle her and even this current school that has assigned her a 1-1 and has a developmental specialist, psychologist, and an OT on staff is starting to say that this might not be the best environment for Harper. Harper is the same way at home. She forgets to drink water. She doesn’t think to eat until you put food in front of her. Every exterior door and window has child locks and has an alarm because of her tendency to wander off. The majority of my cabinets have multiple child locks because she’s figured out how to get through them. She wears a leash in public because of the number of times her parents and I have lost her in stores. Last week was the straw that broke the camels back. Harper was sent home from school for repeated attempts to climb the fence and for running away during circle time and getting into the art supplies that were set aside for later and at my house her tummy was bothering her so she wanted to be held all the time, meaning I couldn’t work until she was picked up. When my brother came to pick up the girls, I told him I couldn’t do this anymore and that I will not take care of the girls or do anything for school until Harper sees a doctor for all of her issues. My brother still insists that Harper is fine and that me refusing to help with no notice is screwing him over. I refuse to budge and now I have family saying it’s not my place to demand that he takes her to a doctor. Ok so I (22F) am using a burner account because my job could be at stake if someone found out. I recently started working from home in the finance sector. My job consists of taking a lot of calls (dont want to give away too much). We do a lot of overtime as calls can drop in at 1 minute to finish and we can't just hang up, mind you calls can last from 2 minutes to 2 hours depending on what the customer needs. I was sitting there a couple of weeks ago and it was 45 minutes past my off queue time. It was a Friday night which is drinking night and ya girl was THIRSTY. The call was looking like it was going to be at least another 30 minutes because there were a couple different things the customer wanted to do. Well... here's where it gets bad. I had just had a customer before this one who got a call and had to go... which gave me the bright idea. So the way out system is set up, we can see the customers phone # on the screen. Will guilt in my veins and long Island iced teas on my mind, I picked up my phone, set it to private and the customer says "oh im getting a call, gotta go." And said he'd call back. I had muted the mic on my phone so he couldnt hear me and hung up as soon as he picked up. I got to leave and have a drink AND I didn't have to continue talking to a rude customer. I was ecstatic. Never told a soul. But whenever a customer is extra rude or talks down to me, or calls in and goes on for too long, I call them. It works like 90% of the time. I’m in angst. That’s the only way I know how to describe it. Everything just feels so surreal right now. My wife and I have been together for the last 35 years. We married young and had our daughter around 10 years later. I still remember the day she had to be taken to the hospital. I was at work when her water broke, but instead of calling and demanding I get there as soon as possible, she told me that it was best I wait and that she was doing completely fine. I told her she was crazy if she thought I wasn’t gonna be there for the birth of my child, but she started screaming at me to stay where I was. I just chalked it up to birth hormones. I finished out the day, and as soon as I clocked out, I was flying to the hospital. It was a venture that proved fruitless, as when I arrived, my wife was nowhere to be found. And in the chaos of the busy hospital, my panic grew more and more until my pager started beeping. It was my wife’s number, and in a confused hurry, I found the nearest phone to take her call. She was already home, asking me where I had been. After a little back and forth about the sheer audacity of that statement, I got in my car and drove home as quickly as I could. When I got there, I found her curled up in her chair in the living room, cradling our baby and looking both exhausted and completely drained. Under normal circumstances, this should’ve been one of the happiest moments of my life. But, really, all I felt was confusion. Why? Because we were scheduled to have a baby boy for her entire pregnancy. That’s what the doctors kept telling us. Her explanation was that there had been some kind of mistake with the paperwork. Pretty expensive mistake, I guess, because we had spent hundreds on clothes and toys for a boy. I still allowed myself to feel happy. I mean, I was a new father. I’d waited 9 months for this moment. I wasn’t gonna let some paperwork issue rain on my parade. Besides, her mom seemed in no mood to argue. I spent the entire first night back home curled up in bed with my wife and our baby girl. I soothed them to sleep in each other’s arms. I rubbed my wife’s back. I held the baby when she cried. It was the start of our new life. From that moment on, I worked my ass off to give them a decent life. Kept food on the table, kept the lights on in the house. I’d even save up every month for big gifts like jewelry and swing sets. Watching my daughter grow up was one of the most magical experiences of my life. Watching her go from her first steps to her first day of school. Seeing her grow into a blossoming young woman and eventually walking across the stage for her high school graduation. It was weird, though. Nobody ever said we looked alike. Nobody ever said she and her mom even looked alike. And, if I’m being honest, I thought the same thing, but it didn’t change how I loved her. But, unfortunately, every fairy tale must come to an end, and ours ended with her mom being diagnosed with cancer. Those were some of the most difficult years of my life. Watching the woman I love lose her appetite. Lose her hair. Lose her life. It broke something within me. I was by her side every day, right there with my daughter. However, on the day we lost her, my daughter had been in class at the state university a hundred miles away, and I was all alone, watching the world crumble before my very eyes. In those last moments, she looked at me with the same love she had back when we first met. Only this time, it was more reminiscent. More sad. Like she was realizing that everything was coming to an end. And that’s when her face changed. Her smile faded. Her forehead creased. She started sobbing. The words she spoke next are what have sent me over the edge. I’ve been questioning our relationship, our life, and everything in between ever since. I want to say I was lost, but, truthfully, it made everything make sense. Because according to my wife: Our son died at birth after some complications. I guess something snapped in her mind when she was told that her baby didn’t make it. Instead of accepting, she rejected. My daughter was stolen. I am married to an amazing man. We have a life I love. We have a beautiful home, we travel, we have great relationships with friends and family, and we both built careers we are proud of. About eighteen months ago, I started to develop a limp on my left side. I decided it was age related, so I committed to adding strength training to my workouts. I continued to get weaker, lost the ability to walk in heels, and started struggling to make it up stairs. My initial lab work was unremarkable, but X-rays and a MRI revealed spinal nerve compression. A neurologist confirmed the diagnosis with EMGs and nerve conduction studies. Even though I had no back pain, every physician I saw diagnosed me with spinal nerve compression. I underwent a posterior lumbar fusion a year ago, but my symptoms worsened in the first few months after my surgery. My neurosurgeon ordered more imaging, which was inconclusive. I went back to the neurologist for more nerve studies, and he diagnosed me with worsening spinal nerve compression. I had several falls and became completely walker dependent. I underwent an anterior and posterior lumbar fusion to revise the first surgery, and the op note says the hardware had not properly set. Four days later, additional imaging revealed some small bone chips near my spinal nerve roots so I had a third surgery to revise the fusion again. I never missed a physical therapy appointment and pushed myself to walk with my walker as much as I could. I was determined to regain the life I loved. Despite all of my efforts, I kept getting weaker and weaker. A new neurologist saw me in February, did a third set of nerve conduction studies, and diagnosed me with ALS. My decline seems to be accelerating and my life expectancy is short. I am completely dependent on others for everything from meals to bathing. Most of the time, the burden falls to my husband. Throughout our entire marriage, he has been squeamish about sharing bathrooms. He firmly believes husbands and wives should have their own spaces for privacy. But, he now helps me to the restroom, cleans up my potty accidents, and helps me dress. I used to do almost all of the cooking, but he stepped up and makes sure we still eat home cooked meals. He continues to thrive at work, then he comes home and manages our home. He takes me places in my wheelchair, even when he is tired. He looks for every opportunity to fill our days with joy. I know he must be exhausted, but he does it all without complaining. I have never felt so loved. I knew he was a great man. I knew he was strong and loving. Now, I know he is a far better husband than I deserve. He’s not perfect. He doesn’t like to talk about his feelings. He doesn’t like to talk about other people’s feelings. His taste in music is questionable. He thinks camping is fun. He won’t buy new clothes for himself, so he needs someone to keep his wardrobe up-to-date. I want him to have the beautiful and adventure-filled life we planned, even if I don’t get to share it with him. I hope the universe rewards him with a beautiful, kind, and fun loving woman who will care for him the same way he’s cared for me. He deserves nothing less.
