What an INSANE special appearance. The Coachella girls always go all out. Edit: I did take out a comment, like "Olivia might outdo Madonna," but I never meant it like that. It was the shock factor that I meant, and never the performance. Madonna is and will always be the ultimate Showgirl. I took it out this morning when I woke up in the middle of the night, and never thought to edit my comment to something like "Madonna AND Olivia...best weekend ever" so I sincerely apologize. I didn't mean to pin Sabrina fans against Olivia fans, and actually slightly prefer Sabrina over Olivia myself, because she's able to hold high notes and generally sing better live than Olivia sometimes does. The Sunfire shirt came from Factory-2-U around 1994.. I wore it in high school. The jacket was in 1996 for my 18th Bday, more than likely it was secondhand when I got it. We used to be a proud country. Hair was vertical or plastered over a kpop man's eyes. Eyeliner was an inch thick. Everything was reflective. Colorful skinny jeans. Matching prince costumes. The sheer unbearable hatred of what they were wearing fueled a generation of dramatic men. It was beyond words. Because if there was one thing the 2nd/early 3rd gen of kpop understood, it was that the glory of the game (kpop is inherently maximalist) is to be just so much. or, riddle me this - if Y2K is trendy again, why is nobody dressing like Tri-Angle, hmm? we're just not calling men Maximum Changmin anymore and making them go out in public like That. Before we begin, I must make some things clear: anyone who lived through the 2000s and was vaguely conscious knows that real Y2K fashion would kill a TikTok eboy instantly because so much of that shit was just so ugly Y2K can be maximalist but something being maximalist is NOT inherently Y2K bad maximalist styling is out there! a good stylist knows how to dig into the concept and make everything about from costume to set design to song come together or like, it was 2011 and we were all just on something I'm literally just throwing together all the OTT fashion I miss and those still fighting the good fight into this post sorry I clickbaited you about Y2K I unironically, hand-on-heart, dead-serious, think all styling in this post is good And you can quote me on that! B1A4, Beautiful Target: there used to be Pann posts about how B1A4's stylist was an anti. the muppet fur Jinyoung is wearing here. the glow-in-the-dark catboy looks. platinum coconut Baro. every stage was a religious experience I hope their stylist knows she changed all our lives. face suits....camp MBLAQ, Cry: the eyeliner has to be this thick again if we're bring Y2K back Nu'est, Action: they just don't dress men like this in their debut year anymore. every rip and tear in the fabric symbolized their pain. Big Bang, Fantastic Baby: that one kpop song they kept putting in videos to go "omg they dress so weird in kpop" and then YG took it to heart and now every man under that company just wears jeans and a tee shirt in everything. hate it here. Dongwoo airport fashion when kpop men wore nothing but snapbacks in every photo Boyfriend, Janus: we need the fantasy prince matching costumes that took 30 minutes to put on again.... also the silly little capes from this one Witch stage Nu'est, Sleep-Talking: their quirky boy era where they wore pajama and bohemian inspired clothes. they had Minhyun wear cut-out shirts to expose his fake tattoos. Ren's Coachella white girl headbands. Baekho didn't have eyebrows. and it still flopped!! MyName, Baby I'm Sorry: Gunwoo's skirt over jeggings, so me-coded (I don't wish to talk about it) VIXX, On & On: if you're gonna put a kpop man in matching suits, it's got to be interesting! honestly this was largely saved by the hair & makeup but i did like the suit patterning and medals HYDE black lipstick I love you SHINee, Dream Girl: no one gets kitsch like SHINee gets the kitsch. the era of the skinniest little suit pants, floral everything, short blazers, this was doing the numbers on tumblr dot com (not that i know anything about that). Taemin pencil pants I think of you often Junsu, Tarantallegra: the leopard print pointed shoulder pads suit...the red dress black over the knee leather boots and blonde emo fringe....the corset.... (also, Flower) Shinhwa, This Love: brought vogue into mainstream kpop while serving cunt in every OTT patterned suit. 100%, Beat: we were entering truly the 3rd gen era of the matching custom suits but by god did the stylists get it instead of some boring classy fits. the half-dozen belts, the leather texturing, the FANTASY ARMOR they wore on stage??? tortured fantasy men who wail, we need you back. Nu'est, Overcome but only Ren's hair. it needs it's own bulletpoint. NCT 127, Firetruck: Mark Lee is literally a belieber he will never understand how good this was Kangta, Eyes On You: there's a certain comedy in putting actual 90s idol Kangta in late 90s fashion in 2022. Time is a flat circle because if you turned this down to 144p it looks like it's from 1999. Honourable mentions Hanse (Victon), Take Over: it's so hard to be the 4th gen It Boy when you are 25 years old and debuted in the 3rd gen. love a giant over-sized fit with a bob cut, and denim on denim with wig. OnlyOneOf Junji helmet hair: it speaks for itself really CIX, Bad Dream: Korea went feral over Bae Jinyoung's tiny head and this stage said what if we put him in a stupid 2000s floppy hat to look even tinier. also Hyunsuk in a giant pucca shell necklace E'Last, Dark Dream: convinced they found a stylist who'd worked with an early 3rd gen group because their styling is straight out of 2013 fantasy cheap velvet and dollar store lamé boy group (also, Kingdom in their polyester French royalty fits from this year....same energy). Blitzers, Will Make a Mistake: i have not seen this kind of neon clashing denim patternwork in years ....and these animal print clashing pants and hoodies? big 2012 quirky circus boy energy Woo Jinyoung (D1CE), Happy Birthday: if you watched MixNine all the way through congratulations, you and I both wasted our lives. but at least we found him! this leopard print suit and the gold lamé paints and white suit jacket are straight from 2000s MTV Xdinary Heroes, Happy Death Day: pastel plaid on plaid on plaid JYPE stylist you finally got something right!! TAN, Du Du Du: the matching suits based off a limited colour palette are literally 2nd gen which is only right because they have 2 old gen idols (Jaejun and Changsun) Verivery, Undercover: the cunty silk tracksuit look is missing only the words "Juicy" directly across Dongheon's ass Ateez, Guerilla: i try to use the honorable mentions for smaller groups I love, but I can't not mention the incredibly well-executed Y2K skate punk influence all over the styling here Bonus: Woodz as "guy in 2004 who still isn't over the Matrix" And finally, a staging I literally never want back but I think everyone must see because I had to: the Infinite Michael Jackson-inspired Come Back Again stage including Sunggyu's shaved head, L in a fedora (remember when every kpop boy wore a fedora), and dollar store striped socks. Ah, 2010.... Fashion has changed drastically both inside and outside kpop, with 2014 bringing the rise of normcore in fashion that SHINee would utilize for 2015's View to huge influence across the industry. Fans now throw fits over idols not looking luxurious and "aesthetic", but maybe we need to remember that stage outfits....are stage outfits. Look a little ugly. Make a facial expression. Remember that the glory of the game is that you are dancing and screaming your heart out on stage to flashing lights and theatre sets and melodrama and by god you are going to be remembered.
