I just saw this on Twitter and I’m curious as to what people think. Ben Stiller recently showing up in a grocery store promoting soda, Tom Hanks selling coffee directly online… meanwhile we keep hearing that Hollywood elites control culture, narratives, politics, etc. But lately it feels like a lot of these celebrities are suddenly trying to sell regular consumer products directly to people. Yes, the internet and streaming disrupted Hollywood and we know it, but this feels bigger than that. If these people are supposed to be part of the most powerful and well-connected entertainment elite on the planet, why does it suddenly look like they’re pivoting to influencer-style product promotion? Is this just the natural decline of an industry? Is this just normal celebrity branding and marketing or does it say something about the current state of Hollywood? Is it just image management and/or reputation repair? Is it influencer culture evolving? Are we watching the complete fall of Hollywood’s elite network? The queer allegory in Netflix's hit animated film KPop Demon Hunters is more than just subtext – it's actually built into its foundations. Did you know that 2025 Out100 artist Mark Sonnenblick, who previously worked on Theater Camp and Lyle Lyle Crocodile, cowrote every song in Kpop Demon Hunters besides "Take Down" and "Soda Pop," alongside the breakout voice of the film, Ejae? He worked with a superstar group of K-Pop writers, including The Black Label (led by Teddy Park) and the breakout voice of the film Ejae. (Ejae voices Rumi, the lead singer of the K-pop girl group Huntr/x, which uses their hit music to fight demons.) "We were able to write these songs that standalone as pop songs," Sonnenblick tells Out in an exclusive interview, "which makes sense because in the movie, they're supposed to be the biggest pop stars in the world." Before all of the success, the team worked together from opposite corners of the world. "Ejae and I, 1 a.m., she'd be in Korea and I'd be in New York. We'd be on a Zoom just like, 'If we can pull this off, it'd be something really, really cool.'" Sonnenblick reveals some behind-the-scenes facts about the songs: "What It Sounds Like" (which he wrote with Stephen Kirk and Jenna Andrews) took over a year to write and had over 100 different versions. "How It's Done" was originally storyboarded to another song entirely. And "Golden," the number-one song in the country for eight consecutive weeks, wasn't completed until December 2024. "'Golden' was the last song written and the last one to be put in the movie," Sonnenblick shares. "It came together quickly because by then, we had already tried six other versions of the song." In one version, "the pre-chorus was less yearning, a little bit less about trying to show who you really are, and about perfection: 'Endless shine and dying light, that's who I'm born to be.'" The songwriting was an intimate back-and-forth between him, Ejae, The Black Label (who produced Golden’s instrumental track), and the film's directors. They asked if the lyric could "'be a little bit more about wanting to be honest and wanting to be who you truly are?'" "You hear it outside of the movie, it's this big empowering anthem, which it totally is," but lyrically, the meaning holds something much deeper. "There's a whole other layer to the meanings of these songs that are really specifically woven into the story," Sonnenblick says. "The irony in the movie, where the emotion comes from, is Rumi hiding who she is as she's singing, 'No more hiding.'" Those hidden meanings give the film an edge. Take "Your Idol," the Saja Boys anthem at the movie's climax, where the demon boy band reveals that they're stealing their fans' souls. "Your Idol" refers to themselves as K-pop figures, but also plays with the Christian sin of idolatry. The group donned rosary beads while singing about "preaching to the choir," and the story connects Rumi's shame about her scars and hiding who she is to the sin that damned the band's frontman Jinu to hell. "How the Saja Boys were dressed is really rooted in deep, older Korean culture, the demon designs are too. So it's not specifically religious, but there is a lot of Christianity in Korea, and it's part of Ejae's background too. And I'm half Jewish, half Christian," Sonnenblick shares. Sonnenblick credits his co-writers with the hook idea ("Ejae came up with that") and the initial cathedral vibes of the instrumental track (“That was Ian Eisendrath, our executive music producer, and The Black Label”). "The double meaning we were interested in is not only this idea of K-pop idol, but also just in a relationship too. A kind of toxic thing, like, 'Hey, baby, it's all right. Just turn to me. I got you.' But then being able to make that musical with, they're literally stealing your souls with how they make you feel. 'Anytime it hurts, play another verse.'" That's how it can feel to play music. In the case of Huntr/x, it's a place of salvation. This core difference was held dear to Sonnenblick and the filmmakers while writing all of the songs. "Huntr/x connects people through music, and the Saja Boys isolate you through music. It's you with your headphones on. It's you watching them. It's not you turning to the people next to you and embracing everybody in the room. It's the demon in your ear saying that you're not good enough. It's saying, listen to this song and tune out the people around you. And these are both sides of what music can do." How these pieces came together is what's made KPop Demon Hunters the most-watched Netflix original film of all time, which is still shocking to Sonnenblick. And while Ejae was originally a songwriter who submitted ear-catching demos, she eventually became the voice of the film's star, Rumi. "You work on so many things, you have no idea what the response is going to be," he says. Some might see a straight-to-streaming animated film as a death sentence, but in retrospect (with the streaming numbers and the Hot100 number-one spot), it was the perfect route for the film. (All Names have been changed) This happened on the 4th of July, but I'm still getting flak from my Dad so I figured I'd ask the internet. Some background I(17F) and my family gather at my Aunt's(Dad's sister) house on the 4th for a BBQ and hangout as a family. My dad and his family are mostly Irish as their mom/my grandma came to the US from Ireland when she was 20 and pregnant with her oldest. However, the only culture they kept was the drinking stereotype. This year, my sister(24F), we'll call her Jenny, brought her boyfriend(25M), who we'll call Eddie, to meet our dads side of the family. Eddie doesn't drink, and my uncle, Dave, likes to make stuff like that his business. Throughout the evening Dave sees that Eddie isn't drinking and is refusing alcoholic drinks, he walks over and offers a beer. Almost everyone was outside, I was inside getting a pop/soda and Eddie was about to go back outside. This conversation ensues: Dave - Do you want a beer? Eddie - No thanks. Dave - We have other kinds if you want to try those, this is an Irish household we have plenty of beer. Eddie - No thanks, I don't drink. Dave - Why? You're too young to be an alcoholic or do you just like pretending you're better than people by not drinking? Now I'm listening, Uncle Dave has a habit of acting like this, he tries to egg people on, he even got into a fist fight with his niece at her own wedding. I found out later he complained to my dad about me cursing at him. Once home later that night, after getting an earful from my dad on the car ride home. Eddie thanked me for standing up for him. My dad says I had no right to say that to my uncle and need to apologize for being rude. I tried to ask about my uncle questioning Eddie about something that was none of Dave's business, but my dad just got mad that I was calling him "Dave" and not "Uncle Dave". I saw the post yesterday. I didn’t chime in because of shame. There were a lot of critical comments about soda drinkers and soda in general and I didn’t want to publicly reveal my inner shame of loving my sodee-pop. But… I’ve been thinking and would like to share some thoughts. Within Mormonism, I lived with almost constant shame. I was a good kid. I didn’t really do anything contrary to the church’s teachings. But just being alive and having thoughts and things made me feel unworthy. I haven’t felt that shame since leaving the church. Yesterday, reading the judgements about soda shops and people buying soda in the mornings and how disgusting that is and the like… I felt ashamed. I am a single parent. I work long days, six days a week. I am a disciplined person, don’t have any addictions, overall very healthy. But fuck me, if I don’t enjoy getting a Coke Zero Twisted at Twisted Sugar. It is one of the only little things I am able to do for myself right now. The one thing I can do tlo “treat yo’self.” It is something I like. And I felt ashamed about it as I read the comments yesterday. Well, no more shame. I don’t care if anyone judges me or my drink. There are worse things out there than getting a soda. And if it makes my day a little better, then I’m not going to feel guilty about it. Sure, that mentality can be used to justify anything. But I decided a long time ago that I was going to take ownership of my body, take it back from belonging to some non-existent, visible sky god, and I am going to own that I like fizzy drinks. Unbeknownst to me was the impending storm brewing on Bills’ Twitter that would shatter the façade of relaxation I had built around myself. Then the notifications began to roll in. Bills star WR Stefon Diggs had reignited one of the most prominent Twitter controversies with one simple tweet which read, “It’s not called pop… it’s called soda”. As is tradition Bills Mafia came to the defense of their home city, where Buffalonians generally use the phrase “Pop” instead of “Soda”. Approximately 20 minutes later Diggs would quell the anger that he had provoked by extending an olive branch via a tweet which read, “Lol it’s crazy the two places I’ve played for both call it pop… was the chances”. If you’re still reading this then you’re probably asking yourself, “Hey UberHansen, what does any of this have to do with you?” Well, let me tell you. Shortly after Diggs’ olive branch to Bills Mafia, my good friend, the official twitter account of r/BuffaloBills, commented, “I don’t know but I have a feeling @UberHansen will spend the next 8 hours calculating the mathematical chances of a given player only playing for teams in pop territory.” So, as any sane person would do, I have spent the entirety of this week analyzing not just the probability that a given player would play for only “Pop” teams but also the performance of #1 WRs based on whether or not their home fan base calls a certain beverage “Soda”, “Pop”, or “Coke”. With that in mind I present to you and Uber Analysis, “Soda and Pop and Coke, OH MY WR1”. TEAMS A study initiated in 2018 by Alan McConchie utilized over 400,000 responses to the question, “What generic word do you use to describe carbonated soft drinks?” The answer to this question as well as the hometown of the respondent allowed for the creation of a map of the United States showing how different locales differ in their use of the phrase “Soda”, “Pop”, and “Coke”. Mapping this data against the location of each NFL team’s home stadium allows us to split the NFL into three distinct teams. Team “Soda”: The most prominent term, and being used by nearly 41% of the United States, “Soda”, or “Soda Water”, is the more generic verbiage for “Synthesized Carbonated Water”. The “Soda” portion of this phrase comes from the use of Sodium Carbonate which when applied makes the taste of carbonated beverages more palatable. Used by the most populace portions of the country the term “Soda” can primarily be heard in both the North East and South West portions of the United States. These players, and their home stadium, were then mapped to their corresponding “Team” providing a data set which allows for a proper analysis of “Team Soda”, “Team Pop”, and “Team Coke”. The question that initiated this entire post was, “what are the mathematical chances of a given player only playing for teams in pop territory”, so that is where we will begin. Of the 128 unique players studied 57 have finished their careers. Those 57 players played for approximately 3 teams (2.82) during their NFL tenures. This means that to answer our primary question we need to understand the probability that the 3 teams a WR1 play for in their career call “Pop” territory home. Since 11 teams play within “Pop” territory then the most simplistic probability analysis would find that the odds of such an event occurring are 3.33% ( (11/32)*(10/31)*(9/30) ). In the case of Stefon Diggs the odds of him playing for “Pop” teams in the first 2 stops of his career (And hopefully he does not have a third) were 11.09%. Luckily for everyone still reading this, this analysis led to some other key findings, primarily whether “Team Soda”, “Team Pop”, or “Team Coke” saw the most success for its Wide Receivers. Is it possible that the usage of two-syllable words (i.e. Soda) allows for a better ability to communicate as a team but less ability to focus on oneself than those who use one-syllable (i.e. Pop, Coke)? Or is it possible that the verbiage a specific fanbase uses has little to no effect on its teams’ success? I can honestly say that I am not ready to make a conclusion based on this analysis as significantly more investigation is required.
