He was so excited about the new season and regulations and how they would go. He had a countdown going to season start. Every Sunday he'd say "Only X more weeks till Australia!" He was bedbound with MS. He didn't have many joys in life but he loved F1 all his life and was a big McLaren fan. He was so happy McLaren and Lando won the championship. We watched F1 together ever since I was a kid. When he went into hospital last Tuesday the 10th, his main concern was that he'd miss testing. Turned out he had sepsis. And when the doctor told him on Wednesday night at 10pm that the treatment wasn't working and his organs were failing, dad made the choice to stop treatment and start comfort care. I asked if he was sure and he said yes. But then he said "I really do want to watch the Grand Prix, though." He died on the Thursday morning at 6:37am. Me and my dad watched it together since I was a little girl in the 90s. It was our thing. I don't think I can ever watch it again without him. Sorry. I know this is a downer. And it's probably against the rules and will get removed so I apologise. Just no one else in my family gets it. No one else liked F1 and seems to think I'm weird for focusing on it so much and doesn't get why I think this is such a big deal. But damn it was a big deal to dad, he wanted to watch it and now he can't. WE were supposed to watch it. I kept going to pick up my phone to call him about what he thinks about testing and then I see HIS phone is sat on the table in my living room because he's not here anymore. I miss you dad. *****EDIT - I'm honestly overwhelmed and don't think I can reply to everyone but thank you. I was just shouting into a void and didn't expect a response like this. I had to go clear out his home today and I hated it because everyone else seems to be dealing ok and it's too fast and I just felt like he was being erased. Even though I know logically that's not it and it's something that needs doing injust didn't want to do it so soon. But then I open this up to more notifications than I've ever seen in my life of strangers saying such nice things. My dad's name was Simon. Income comes from: Team salary Performance bonuses Endorsements & sponsorships Personal brands (fashion, media, investments) Tier 1: The Mega-Rich Superstars These are the drivers who are set for life even if they retired tomorrow. Lewis Hamilton Net worth (estimate): $300M–$450M Salary peaked around ~$60M/year Massive fashion + lifestyle endorsements (Tommy Hilfiger, LVMH) Owns businesses, real estate, and invests heavily Max Verstappen Net worth (estimate): $200M–$250M Salary: ~$75M/year Fewer endorsements than Hamilton, but insane performance bonuses Tier 2: Very Rich Fernando Alonso – ~$250M Charles Leclerc – ~$125M Lando Norris – ~$129M Massive jump in salary from winning the WDC has almost doubled his net worth around $10-20M base salaries for this tier SIDENOTE: I'm a bit confused by the Charles and Lando figures. I'd even go so far as to say that Esteban's house in Switzerland looks upper middle class not rich. Maybe it's the North American in me but I find it very odd these guys who clearly have a lot of money don't buy luxury villas and decorate them lavishly. Is it a European thing to choose to live in smaller homes? Either way these guys are very lucky to be driving in F1 during this era. George Russell is great but if he drove in any other period of F1, before F1 became as insanely profitable and popular as it is right now, there is no way in hell imo he'd be able to afford a 3 million dollar luxury speed yacht that costs 100s of thousands to maintain and operate every year.
