Hi, I distinctly remember watching an animated TV show in the mid 2010s. I watched it on a Swedish board casting network so all of the old information I have from my childhood is from the Swedish sub of the show. The show I remember had a boy with blue short hair on the top of his head, he had an orange cargo shirt and jeans and he was distinctly long and a big hefty, I think his name was “Bert” The dog was mainly yellow and had brown ears and a tail, he was similar in shape to Snoopy, I don’t remember if he had a collar or not nor do I remember his name. The show had a style reminiscent of Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon animated shows, but a bit different, it hat pretty big black lines on the characters and on the environment. The plot from what I recall was about this boy and his smart talking dog, they would get into adventures and do regular kids show stuff. Hey all! Recently got this automatic dog door because our barn cats are starting to come in our house but my wife is allergic. We have two small dogs and they absolutely hate the collars that came with this. They're too big and one of the dogs refuses to use the door with the collar. I wanted to take advantage of this problem and hopefully see if anyone had any recommendations on how to "smarten" this door up? My thought was using an esp32 or raspberry pi and connect to the up/down buttons on the internal board and use some motion sensor or AI camera to sense the dogs and open the door without them having to wear the RF collar. So, I was always anti-prong. They looked bulky, medieval, and I’ve literally seen countless people picking pieces of their prong collars that fell apart or got tangled from the floor... that ain't for me I thought prongs were only for Cujo-level violent or uncontrollable dogs. Fast forward—I adopt a 4-month-old Australian Cattle Dog/Aussie Shepherd mix (aka kangaroo/raptor hybrid). Cute as heck, but showing signs of frustrated greeter syndrome. I did the “good dog dad” thing: Puppy classes at PetSmart (for the kids). Private training (for the wife and me). Then…the balls dropped. Growth spurt. Suddenly my flat collar turned into a medieval torture device for me. Switched to martingale, then slip lead. Manageable for me, but my wife and kids were getting rag-dolled by a furry velociraptor on Red Bull. We leveled up training to the point of working outside with the trainer’s dog. Total chaos. My pup went from “good student” to “parkour audition.” Finally, my trainer pulls out the prong collar. At that point, my back already needed a chiropractor, so I said, “Sure, why not?” Slapped that bad boy on… game changer. No jerking. No yanking. Just 2–3 fingers of guidance. Dog listens. I’m not dislocating my shoulder. My kids and wife can actually walk him without reenacting scenes from Jurassic Park. Is he perfect? Nah. To start, I am from the US. Just moved to Netherlands. I have a 2.5yo male dog, ~22kg. I got him as a puppy and have spent a LOT of time and money (like thousands) on training him. He is very smart but he has struggled with major anxiety/fear of basically everything besides other animals and nature. The only time he let's people touch him is when he is surrounded by other dogs or in nature (park, forest, etc). Due to his anxiety, he extremely high alert/focused. I mean this like, nothing will break his attention if he is stuck on something... and i mean NOTHING. And his fear makes him bolt. Not an ounce of reactive aggression or fight in him whatsoever. He doesnt even bark. He just tries to run as far away as possible as fast as possible. Which makes walking with him very difficult. We have gone through group obedience courses, at home private trainings, private training sessions in public, all kinds of meds (currently not taking any), behaviorist, trainers, vets all over. I have tried every type of harness, martingale, flat collar, even tried every type of high value treat i can think of (raw/fresh meats, wet food straight from the can, etc.). Nothing has worked. He is not toy or affection/attention oriented whatsoever. He is fully crate trained (loves it and is also free roaming most of the time now), knows a ton of commands and some tricks too. All of which i trained him to do but he was only able to learn in a distraction-free environment. I've tried exposure training. I used to spend a lot of time just sitting outside (far from things but where they were visible still or in my car) just rewarding him whenever he looked at me or broke his focus from things. I still to this day train with him every day for at least 15 mins but sometimes up to 2 hours depending on what we are doing. The only thing that has ever made a difference is the prong collar I started using with the last private trainer I worked with. It is a quality one. A herm sprenger with a flat piece in the front that goes in front of his throat. It sits very loose on him as we found he does not need much of a pull to break his focus and look at me. So it's basically never putting pressure on his neck until the split second I do a correction pull. This collar was a game changer, and completely changed our bond and allowed him to feel more secure and calm out in public. He began trusting that I would keep him safe from scary stuff and would even listen to commands when near crowds or other scary things. We went to the vet here for the first time and I mentioned this to the vet. She told me prongs were banned here and I had no idea until then. When I asked if she had any resources for me or trainers she shrugged and just looked at me. I switched him to his flat collar but it has now been a week and each day he is getting more and more fearful and pulling more and more on the leash. I've been taking him to the park and doing training sessions. I keep treats in all my pockets and reward him for looking at me, not pulling, looking away from people and bikes, but it's not getting any better. I reached out to multiple trainers in the area and theyve either not responded to told me to try the same things ive already done multiple times over. We even did 2 hours of practice in my apartment before going out and he immediately started yanking me towards the park. Tail fully tucked. I know there is a culture difference in how this tool is used here, but im genuinely lost on what to do. The prong was the only thing he couldn't pull himself out of and the only thing that broke his fixation of things. The goal was always to train to eventually get rid of the prong. With his level of anxiety, it just takes a long time and a lot of work. But now we can't use it anymore which has cut that time-frame short. I know some people think these are abusive items, I'm not here to debate things. He is my baby boy, I love him so much, and I make sure his needs are met. He is loved, and he knows it. He has never feared the collar itself, it has never caused bad behaviors. He gets excited when I grab the collar because he knows he's going out. He even has significantly more confidence when it's on. What I need advice on how to help him feel safe, confident, and relaxed even when nothing else has worked. If anyone has ideas, please let me know. EDIT: He's a labradoodle (yes yes a doodle, but i allergies and he does not trigger them and he is well groomed). So my girlfriend and I live in a duplex. New construction. New electrical code requires an outside disconnect at the meter box. So to paint the picture on the neighbors side of the house there’s a dual meter panel and a disconnect (a 100 amp breaker) for each apartment. Well Friday my girlfriend gets home she calls me at work and says the power is off. I say okay I’ll be home in a few to come check it out. In the meantime one of our other neighbors goes over and sees our breaker is off and flips it back on. Okay no big deal. I ask this neighbor if it was tripped or if it was off. He says ehh well I’m not really sure I think it was off but he doesn’t really know much. Next day we’re headed home and I get a notification that my dogs smart collar base is offline. Okay sounds like the power is off again. So we get home it’s late at night at this point I walk over to the breaker and find it is off. Not tripped. Off. Only way that is going to happen is if someone physically turned it off. So I turn it back on and put a padlock on the door. Now this isn’t a high traffic area where the meter panel is located. The only people that are ever in that area is this exact neighbor and his family. 5 minutes later neighbor comes knocking on our door. “Hey ugh what’re you doing over on my property?!” (For one it’s not his property obviously…) “Oh yeah our power was turned off I turned it back on” “Ohh yeah there’s been some power issues here recently that must have caused it” “Uhh no it was off. Not tripped. It was physically turned off by a person no other possibility” At this point the guy flips his lid (mind you I didn’t explicitly say I think it was him who tampered with it) starts screaming so I just shut the door. Cops show up about 10 minutes later turned out this same neighbor called the cops. He starts screaming at the cops (the ones he called???) and demands I get arrested for trespassing. Cops come and talk to me basically say yeah this guy is a dipshit we deal with him a lot you should try to get a restraining order. While all this is happening an ambulance shows up. Turned out the guys wife is having a panic attack and they take her to the hospital. Cops end up leaving nothing happens and we can hear him arguing with his family for the next couple hours. hi guys, just wanted to share some exciting and happy news from adolescent rescue dog hell :). I love my dog, adopted her six weeks ago (1 year old pit mix brought in as a stray). She’s a great dog, eager to please and smart but definitely some behavioral issues, mainly mouthyness (improving slowly but surely, my hand wounds prove it), and leash issues. she was lunging, pulling, dragging me on walks toward other dogs and animals and it just made it such a negative experience for both of us (and she’s STRONG). After doing research, i purchased a herm sprenger prong collar, conditioned her to it, and have now taken her on three long walks with it. the difference is insane. our walks are now 90% completely loose leash, and when passing other dogs she will start to pull, feel the pressure, and return to my side. i am amazed and so happy. she sits perfectly to let me put it on and loves to walk, tail wagging the whole time. anyway, just wanted to share!! celebrating my wins!! submitted by /u/Intelligent_Okra4701 to r/OpenDogTraining [link] [comments]

My dog just turned 1 (aussiedoodle) and is incredibly smart and well-behaved in the house. However, he has major leash reactivity when it comes to other dogs, squirrels, and sometimes people. When there's no one around, he does really well on walks, but as soon as he sees one of the above, it all goes out the window. He got away from me earlier this week and today almost knocked me over, both times while chasing a squirrel. He barks relentlessly at other dogs on walks and through the fence. I know he's still a puppy, but it's starting to make me nervous to take him out. If a squirrel ran into the street he would certainly drag us both into traffic. I keep hearing that he'll calm down by the time he's 2, but we were told the same thing when he turned 1. We've tried socialization classes, training classes, an in-home trainer and nothing has worked so far. He goes to daycare regularly, and seems to do really well. He also has playdates with the neighbor's dog and does really well with her. Training has included clickers, treats, and establishing who's in charge, among other things. The in-home trainer has been helpful for other things, but hasn't solved this, which is our main issue. Nothing so far has dulled his reactivity at all. It feels like the only options at this point are to wait it out or try an electric collar. I'm certainly open to other feedback, but I'm mostly wondering if an electric collar is worth a shot at this point. Edit: Thank you everyone for the feedback. This is my first dog, so I'm still learning as I go along. I will definitely be using some of the methods mentioned in the comments. I think I knew that the answer would be not to use an electric collar, it's just good to get confirmation as I've been given a lot of contradicting advice up to this point.
