Speaking of ebooks, did I hear somewhere that Amazon relented on the “not letting you download your books as files anymore” thing? Kindle paperwhite? Do I need to be deinfluenced?
Hi there, I listen to/read on average one book a week on the Libby app. People gift me books as well. There’s a lot of books where the voice actor is like nails on a chalkboard for me - those books I rather read the actual book. So I’ll go to the library and borrow that book. I read A LOT at night. I would love to get something I can read at night next to my newborn without waking her up. So I have been looking into a kindle paperwhite. I don’t really spend much money on myself. I thrift and/or borrow what I need lately. I looked into older kindles and from what i gathered they are very slow. Someone suggested an iPad mini is a better option because it’s versatile. I’m very much on the fence if I should get one. I have looked into a book light to help with nighttime reading, but idk this seems annoying to me. Does anyone have one? Do they like it? If you have a kindle paperwhite - is it worth it? I’m trying my best to make an intentional choice vs a dopamine choice. Thanks for listening to my rambling if you’ve made it this far 💛 Edit: Wow! Thank you all for your feedback. I feel like I went from knowing very little regarding e-readers to as knowledgable as I could be without actually owning one. I was not expecting such a strong response. Reading through the informative comments (I wish I could respond to them all) - I was presented with a 3rd option: Kobo - I didn't know it existed until this post. After much research, I like the idea of being free from Amazon reins and I went with the Kobo Clara BW. Thank you!! SECOND EDIT: I’m sitting here with my Kobo, 45 pages into a book. Baby is sleeping next to me. I stopped and thought - I have to let Reddit know how peaceful this experience is. I’m deeply into my book and my eyes are ok. I’m not holding a big book and making extra noise as I turn the page. This is the life!! submitted by /u/Risingwiththesun to r/Frugal [link] [comments]

I only read B&W, but the Colorsoft is cheaper than the Paperwhite
I'm looking to buy a Kindle and was probably going to wait until Prime Day or whenever to buy the Kindle Paperwhite. However I'm looking at the Colorsoft right now and it's somehow $10 less than the non-ad version of the Paperwhite. Should I just get the Colorsoft? I'm concerned that tarrifs + war will continue to push the price of electronics up, so I'm not sure if I want to really wait until the next Prime Day + I kinda just want to read books. If I only read black & white books, should I just get the Kindle Paperwhite, or is the fact that the Colorsoft is cheaper right now mean that I should get the Colorsoft? Are there any downsides to the Colorsoft when compared to the Paperwhite? Is the "No ads" on the Colorsoft permanent? submitted by /u/mlsts to r/kindle [link] [comments]

Small dead pixel on brand new Paperwhite Sig series…unexpected response from Amazon
So just bought a new 32gb Paperwhite signature series 12th gen…didn’t notice the small dead pixel until I read at night. It didn’t bother me at first but my eye kept going to it while reading so figured I’ll just get a replacement since it was brand new. Expected to return this one and get a replacement sent to me from Amazon. No big deal. Well chat surprised me by completely refunding my Kindle purchase and letting me keep the kindle anyways. Guess I can deal with the small pixel lol submitted by /u/Least_Project5747 to r/kindle [link] [comments]

Is there a reason outside of being Amazon that Kindles are disliked in this sub (US specific)?
Trust me, I think being Amazon is reason enough not to buy something. I truly get that. I caved and bought a Kindle Paperwhite because of Libby integration and Kindle Unlimited, a lot of books I like are on KU and I average 6 books or so a month so it's a really good value for me. I also have a Nook Glowlight 4 which I do still love. However, the Kindle Paperwhite really feels premium to me, the screen is great, the warmth and brightness are awesome, I personally like the software it's really fast, battery really lasts forever and it's easy to use. It's so easy to "send to kindle" email any epubs you purchase seperately to your device, it's also really easy to send your Libby books there. I'm not trying to promote Amazon and I know that in other countries things are different, I'm just curious why people are always reccomending not to get a Kindle? I haven't tried a Kobo and I really love my Nook but I'd be lying if I said the paperwhite wasn't way nicer for a similar cost to my nook. I'll likely not have the opportunity to try Kobo because I truly don't need a 3rd eReader. submitted by /u/Known-Ad-100 to r/ereader [link] [comments]

do you think Amazon will actually innovate with future models of the kindle?
I used to have the Oasis but upgraded to the new Paperwhite this time around. I recently was holding a friend's Oasis who did not upgrade, and was shocked to remember how deluxe, sleek, high quality it felt in comparison to my new Paperwhite Signature. there's nothing wrong with the paperwhite but it makes me sad that the Kindles have been kind of shunted into this one thing — i wish for more creativity and innovation here! potentially different colors, of course the re-addition of the buttons, a signature/deluxe model that's actually made with higher quality materials or a lighter weight, possibly the integration of features many people enjoy like better hand-held ergonomics, better case design (the Boox cases look so good to me!), etc. curious if we might ever see a world with these, or if the Kindle will forever be a "don't fix what's not broken" situation submitted by /u/nova0175 to r/kindle [link] [comments]

I will (hopefully) still love my Kobo Clara Colour as well, but so far I'm liking the Kindle! I bought a Kindle alongside the Kobo because I also want to be able to support amazon-only authors! Breaks my heart. Amazon will no longer let me register my perfectly good paperwhite to my account.
I've had this Paperwhite for 13 years, and it's been so great. Recently I decided to reset it to clean off the hundreds of books I had on it, and much to my horror after the reset it wouldn't connect to my account. After chatting with tech support, it turns out they won't let me register it anymore because it's too old. So now I have a perfectly functioning kindle that I can no longer use with my Amazon purchased books. Really bums me out (especially since I'm away for work and have a lot of reading time available). submitted by /u/SkySix to r/kindle [link] [comments]

Amazon's update broke my Kindle Paperwhite and my heart.
My Kindle Paperwhite (2022) was working fine until the update in August or early September. As soon as it updated, I turned on my Kindle and found all of my books, audioboks and documents were unavailable. All 1,627 items on my Kindle were suddenly unreachable. I called customer service right away. They told me the only way forward was to wipe everything. I balked. That's a lot of downloading, I said. Don't worry, they told me. Everything will be restored. If it doesn't show up on your Kindle automatically, we will take care of downloading the materials for you. But I had 72 documents. What about those? Don't worry, they said. We, tech support, will send you a link in your email within 24-48 hours that will solve everything. It will be resolved just fine, they said, but if it isn't, then maybe we can send you a different device. Just in case. But you can only have that if yours is not working. We will check. And you send it in with receipts. Your paperwork has to be valid. You can't just send one. Hmmm. I didn't understand the attitude, but that was not about me. Okay, I said. The next time I heard from tech support was when I called in September. My Kindle still wasn't working. It still couldn't find any of its content. I guess the tech support email they mentioned was sent to the Great Space Coaster. It never materialized on my end. It is now November. I wiped my Kindle yesterday, per instructions. The wipe is the only way, they had told me. Spent an hour downloading books before I realized the Kindle had only saved about 25 of the 500 or so books I had sent. I called tech support. Don't worry, they said. Go ahead and do a factory reboot. We will send you an email that will resolve everything. Then you can download your content again. Hmmm. So we were back to the drawing board. They were now telling me I had to wipe my Kindle a SECOND time in order for it to work properly. Also, the promise of help with my content had been smoothly disappeared. But I still have the mysterious magic email to look forward to. Oh, and I noticed the only mention of a replacement Kindle had gone from sending me a Kindle to "...maybe we can get you a discount on a new device". Oh. You broke my Kindle, and MAYBE you'll give me a coupon for a discount? Oh, honey. Why would you think I would ever give you money for a Kindle again? I have been a Kindle customer for a lot of years now. I was gifted my first one under protest, but fell immediately head over heels. I don't go anywhere without my Kindle. So, as you can imagine, I do not have any desire to send my Kindle anywhere. I just want it to work properly. If I had dropped my Kindle into a pool or lit it on fire, then I would understand the lackadaisical response I am receiving. Let's be clear, though: None of this was my doing. Amazon sent an update that destroyed my device. So far, they have not been helpful in ameliorating this situation in any way. I want them to fix the mess they made. Give me a device that works. Sure, in exchange for the one they messed up. I have no compunction about that. I love my Kindle. Until this happened, I did not go anywhere without it. I have taken to carrying my Kindle Keyboard around, but it's not backlit, which creates a different kind of challenge, especially at bedtime. I need a night light to read in bed again. Also, I suspect my Keyboard is only working because I turned off its wifi. l have no interest in seeing what would happen if I let the Keyboard update. Another disaster, I suppose. By the by--I just tried to boot up my Kindle a little while ago. It took four minutes. During the first minute, the screen was almost completely blank. I could just see the time at the top. I have carried my Kindle with me everywhere, every day, since that gift in 2010. But this treatment has been so execrable that I think this is my last Kindle. It's hard to imagine ever buying a new device from Amazon again. submitted by /u/WellReadHermit to r/kindle [link] [comments]

Please help🥲 I’ve been saving all my Amazon gift cards to buy a Kindle. 💲📚
Help Me Pick My First Kindle! 📚✨ Paperwhite or Basic? Hey Kindle fam! I’m finally taking the plunge and getting my very first Kindle/e-reader — and I’m so excited! I’ve known about Prime Day forever, but this is actually my first year jumping in, and I’ve been going down the rabbit hole researching which one to get. Will the sales get better?! From the start, I’ve been leaning toward the Paperwhite… but now that I’m seeing the price drop on the Basic, I’m second-guessing myself. The price isn’t a huge deal to me, but if I can save a chunk and still get what I need, I’m all ears! A little about me: • I’m a binge reader. When I’m in the mood, I’ll devour 3–4 books back to back… and then maybe not pick up another for a month or two. 😅 I read about 20+ books a year! • I do most of my reading at night in bed, with the lights off so my S/O can sleep — so screen lighting really matters to me. • I don’t read outside or at the beach, so waterproofing or glare isn’t a huge deal. • I’ve got $110 in gift cards and plan to grab a cute case too. I’m happy to spend a bit over that if it’s worth it! Would love any advice, personal recs, or thoughts from fellow Kindle lovers. Help a newbie out! 💛 submitted by /u/Fair_Objective1636 to r/kindle [link] [comments]

Amazon sent me a new Kindle to replace my old one!
My 2022 Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition suddenly stopped working. I bought it last May and it hasn’t been dropped, never went anywhere near water. I had a case and a screen protector as well. Well, I was reading the other night and all of a sudden the screen became so faded, even in the dark you can’t see anything. It turns on but it’s pretty impossible to read or navigate. I called Amazon customer service and spoke to a very helpful rep who gave me a one time offer of replacing my Kindle with a new one. It’s a refurbished version, but it’s the 2024 Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition so I’m not complaining. I do have to return my old one to them but I don’t mind since there’s no use for it. Can’t wait to start reading again! submitted by /u/peachyllanyz to r/kindle [link] [comments]

Another reason to stay away from Kindle and Amazon
TL;DR: Amazon is unable to remove ads from my kindle even though I'm willing to pay for it. So, I wanted to remove ads from my Kindle (Kindle Paperwhite 5th Gen, bought in 2013). I went to Amazon’s website, clicked “Remove Offers,” and got an error: “Something went wrong, please try again later.” I contacted Amazon support, chatted with an agent, and they said they’d escalate the issue to senior agents since they couldn’t fix it. After a week, I got this response: Purchased From: Retail Store - Unfortunately, we won't be able to provide any exception and cannot remove the Ads from the device. - Since this is a Retail purchase, the customer will not be able to do it from their end as well. - Please educate the customer. Resolving the ticket. Thanks. So it seems like senior agents responded with above text and told first-line support to inform (educate) the customer. But first-line support just forwarded the whole thing to me and closed the issue. So their argument is they cannot remove ads, and I can't either because the device is purchased from retailer. After this I made a post on r/kindle explaining the situation. It got downvoted to hell, but some users mentioned that they also bought their Kindle from a retailer, and Amazon removed the ads for free. Only difference is their kindle is 2024 model. So I sent another email to Amazon so they can clarify the situation for me. Today they answered with this response. Which basically says following: We are unable to remove the ads from your device. As this was a retail purchase, there is unfortunately no way for you to remove the ads from your end either. ... this limitation is built into the device model you purchased, and we do not have the ability to make exceptions or changes to its functionality. Now, you might ask why I even care about removing ads after all these years. Well, for a long time, I actually didn’t have any ads. I remember having them when I first got my Kindle, then simply turning them off from settings. And that was it, no ads for me. And I also remember clearly that when I lifted my cover, my book opened directly instead of showing "Swipe to unlock." Then, after a software update, the ads suddenly came back, and I didn’t even realize what had changed. I just knew the "Swipe to unlock" thing was back and started looking for ways to remove it. Turns out, it was because of the ads. So I tried to turning off them from settings again, no avail. Looked it up online and found "Remove Offers" button, rest is as I explained above. So yeah, I just wanted to share my experience and put this out there in case someone else runs into the same issue. I actually like my Kindle, it’s been working great for over a decade, proving its quality as a device. But after realizing how much control Amazon has over it, and how they can just decide to leave me with no solution even when I’m willing to pay, I’ve decided I’m done with them. Sorry for the long post, and thanks for reading. submitted by /u/freekyrationale to r/ereader [link] [comments]

Kindle and page turn buttons. Here's where I think Amazon got it wrong.
Amazon keeps saying there is no consumer demand for page turn buttons. I think Amazon is wrong. I think there is low demand for a high-end ereader, and the models Amazon puts page turn buttons on is their high end models. When your average consumer is looking at a Kindle and they have to pick between a $300 Kindle Oasis or a $160 Paperwhite, they're going to pick the PaperWhite. The only way to really tell if consumers want page turn buttons is to make two models with a smaller price gap between them, one with page turn buttons and one without them. But when the barrier to entry for page turn buttons is a $100+ cliff, they're not really going to get a high demand for page turn buttons. I know almost every other brand out there makes a unit with page turn buttons, but I would guess that probably 75% of consumers don't know about other ereaders and probably don't care about them, since they already have an Amazon account. I would bet most Kindle owners have probably never even used a model with page turn buttons, since the last basic model that had one was the Kindle Keyboard back in 2010. Once that unit was discontinued, only Amazon's premium offerings ever offered page turn buttons. The one thing I wish Amazon would do, is add support for Bluetooth page turners. If they don't want to add page turn buttons, that's fine. But the Kindle has Bluetooth in it. Adding page turning using a Bluetooth remote is a software update that doesn't require hardware. Hell, you could make your own line of Bluetooth page turners as an add-on accessory for $20.00. submitted by /u/plazman30 to r/kindle [link] [comments]

The Kindle Paperwhite is my new best friend.
I love books. I buy a lot of books, more than I can read and they take up a lot of space. I love the feel, the weight, the SMELL of books. I buy a lot secondhand through thriftbooks. I will never give up on physical books BUT... Now I can read in the dark without eyestrain, read on my side in bed, read on the go without lugging around a book, read in the bath without fear of getting pages wet. The best part: I got my new kindle on an Amazon deal. It was a "kids" kindle, but not REALLY. The difference is, it comes with a kids+ year subscription (includes some YA books which I'm a sucker for) which you gotta make a kids profile and PIN to use but whatever, it comes with a case, and it's got a longer warranty. To access your regular account you just exit amazon kids. It's only 8GB but I forsee ot taking a LONG TIME to acquire that many, especially since I try to stick to the free books and prime reading books and libby. I was debating getting a kindle ereader for a long time (I was a skeptic) and even though I've only had it for a few days, I can sincerely say that I LOVE it. Best purchase I've made in a while. submitted by /u/cats_and_stacks to r/books [link] [comments]

Any Amazon Kindle users here?
I am not a huge reader but I do find myself sometimes not wanting to read a book during commute because I don’t want others looking at the book I read. Think the Kindle might be useful for me because of this.
