I just visited the only Anthropologie store left in my city. It’s at the end of the subway line. They used to have a beautiful location in an old church in the downtown core. They closed it. They lost sight of their clients and their brand. They used to have such beautiful, well-made pieces… and now it’s all SH*T. When I was in my 20s I couldn’t wait to be able to afford Anthropologie, and now that I can, it’s the quality of what I could afford back then (Forever21, Zara, H&M), but with the same Anthropologie prices. The clothing design is—shockingly—a cheap imitation of its former self. No more velvet, cotton and wool, now most things seem to be wrinkled nylon. The contrast is striking, even between Colette pants pre-pandemic vs now. I know because I had my own ones on when I tried on a new pair of Colette pants that I ultimately returned. The quality was horrible: the fabric was light, not “light and comfortable”, but “light and cheap”. The big plastic button was hanging on by a thread. The pockets were uneven. It’s a microcosm example of the brand itself. I remember being suspect when they launched Pilcro and Maeve…I thought they’d at least keep the quality of the brands they had curated. nope. This was an incredible cold opening from Season 2. We follow a troubled young man for a solid minute. We see his daily routine, we see the Stormfront Merchandise, we listen to his podcasts, we see the paranoia build. This was such a simple and effective way of letting the audience know about the world. We don't need huge crowds, but an inclusion of something like this would of gone such a long way. I've had 3 issues with Anthro and am done with them. A scammer logged into my account, ordered 3 expensive dresses and got store credit when they immediately started a return on the site. (Without returning the dresses. Lucky them.) Only 1 of the dresses could be canceled 2 hours after the scammer ordered them. So, I was in for months of a mess with my bank and Anthro. Thankfully, Anthro was able to cancel 1 of the 3 store credit "gift cards" of the scammer. I received a blazer instead of the matching shorts I ordered - so odd. I had to contact them and ask for the shorts that I ordered... I took a gift receipt to return a gift at a store. Instead of giving me store credit, the sales person returned the money to my gift giver's credit card! So I had to embarrassingly tell the gift giver I returned her item and she has money going into her account. I’m getting married this summer and I’ve been trying hard to be a “chill bride.” My family and myself are doing most of the planning. My cousin is letting us stay at her house in Antioch, TN, just outside in Nashville so we’re saving money before the bachelorette party and another cousin has a van and we’re all driving down together so we just have to split the cost of gas. None of us are exactly swimming in cash and I wanted to keep costs down as much as possible. I also told my bridesmaids, if there’s anything about my wedding stressing you out, let me know. I’m the only one that should be stressing and before this little scenario, I was feeling pretty good. Anyway, I found these perfect cocktail dresses at Anthropologie, inclusive sizing, great color and the holy Grail they were on sale. I made a deal with the bridesmaids. I buy the dresses if they covered any necessary alterations, everyone was happy. I gave everyone their dresses. Everyone looks fabulous and we’re all happy, who said planning a wedding was hard? Enter Roxy: back in December I saw a photo of Roxy at her work Christmas party wearing the bridesmaids dress. I’ll admit it bugged me. I wanted the big reveal at the wedding to feel special not like a rerun of an HR office mixer, but I bit my tongue because none of our mutual friends were there so I’m not going to stress myself out about something I felt like was kind of petty. The problem is we have a mutual friend getting married in June, one month before my wedding. A lot of my wedding guests will be at this wedding, and when I asked Roxy what she was wearing she casually said “Oh I’m just wearing the bridesmaids dress from your wedding. I look hot in it and it’s my favorite.” I paused . I told her I didn’t want her wear the bridesmaid uniform as a guest to a wedding filled with our mutual friends right before my big day Well, now Roxy thinks I’m being a bridezilla. She pointed out that I did say I wanted them to have a dress that they could wear again ( I meant after the wedding obviously) she then dropped the bombshell that she’s already worn it to several events. I might’ve snapped. I told her that since I bought the dress, I didn’t want her to wear it again until after my wedding she hit back in that since she paid for the alterations, she’s invested just as much money into the dress as I did which thanks to the sale might actually be true. My other bridesmaids are on my side, but Roxy thinks I’m overreacting because it’s just a dress. Am I the asshole for wanting the first time our friend group sees her in the dress to be when she’s standing at the altar with me. Mini update I guess - we’re meeting for dinner tomorrow to talk. I have a laptop but it’s old and every time I turn it on, it updates for what feels like a year, and by the time it lets me do what I need to do, I’ve lost interest or gone and did it on my phone or tablet, so it’s not worth it. Also I’m not going to apologize for grammar and spelling mistakes. Anyone who comes to Reddit posts and schools people on grammatical errors must get a kick out of it, so have fun, I’m sure this will be full of them. I get there, their and they’re confused sometimes. It makes my sister insane ands she loves to correct me when I do that. Sometimes when she’s feeling down, I do it on purpose just to give her a pick me up, so I get it. Back to the story, when I got there, she was already there, which is unusual because I’m usually the early one. I hate being late. I also hate when other people are late so I tend to get to things early because how can I judge other people for being late if I’m late? That’s no fun. But I was watching Ladies of London and the etiquette lady said that being early is also rude. Who knew. She actually said if you’re going to a dinner party, you should actually be about 15 minutes late so the hosts have time for unexpected things that come up. If you get there too early, they feel like they have to entertain you instead of wrapping up whatever they need to finish. I thought that was interesting and wanted to share. But let me get back to the update. I walk in, she stands up and gives me a hug and apologizes. So of course, I immediately start to tear up which makes her tear up and we’re just standing there hugging and crying in the middle of the restaurant. When we finally sit down, she tells me what’s going on. Apparently she’s been a little depressed for the past few months. She feels like she’s the only single person in our friend group, and I hadn’t thought about it but she kind of is. She said even our friend who is asexual has a partner. Again true. But it’s not like Roxy doesn’t date, and I’m not going to say she’s picky. She just feels like if she can tell that her and the guy aren’t compatible, there’s no reason to waste time. I’ll tell you why it hasn’t worked out with the last 3 guys she’s gone out. Guy number 1. Great guy, owned his own business, and I thought he was very handsome. But he’s not a pet guy. And if you do have a dog, he thinks it shouldn’t live in the house. It should be outside with a nice dog house. And the dog definitely shouldn’t get on the furniture. Her dog is her baby so he had to go. I agree, my fiancé knows to never make me choose between he and my dog. It would not be pretty. Guy number 2 hated his ex wife too much. She said he was always bringing her up but never in a good way. He seemed to always bring her up in conversations. Like they went to the movies, and he said his ex always said she loved movies, that’s why her and her girlfriends went so much, but it turns out she wasn’t really going to the movies, she was going out to cheat. Or they were going for a hike and she had her hair in a ponytail. He told her how cute she looked then said his ex wore ponytails all the time, unless she was meeting up with the guy she was cheating on him with, she always wore her hair down for him. She swears any topic of conversation, he could bring back to his ex cheating on him. She felt like he wasn’t over his ex wife so she cut it off. And guy number 3 just enjoyed fart humor too much for her liking. I don’t think I have to elaborate. My boo loves a good fart joke too, but I find it endearing. She thinks it’s immature. So anyway (I’m going to say that a lot, that’s how I get back on subject) she had been in a funk and I’m sure me talking about my upcoming wedding constantly didn’t help. She didn’t say that, but I do talk about it a lot. I mean look at me, I’m on Reddit talking about it now. So getting back to Roxy, she was in a funk. She picked up the dress from the seamstress and tried it on to see how it fit and she said she felt so pretty. She hadn’t felt pretty in a long time. Isn’t it funny how some outfits just make you feel good? I feel like that in my wedding dress, which I got at a consignment shop, can you believe it? I took it this seamstress and she worked magic on this dress. It was pretty before but now it’s beyond. Now you see what I did there, talking about my wedding again. I’m trying to do better. So anyway, when her holiday office party came along, she so didn’t want to go and procrastinated until the last minute to find something to wear. She went shopping and couldn’t find anything she liked. She even went to Anthropologie and couldn’t find anything in the store she liked and because she waited so long, didn’t have time to wait for an online order. And she knew it was wrong but she wore the dress and everyone loved it. She got so many compliments. Her work crush flirted and danced with her. Even the women there liked it. She hit it off with one of her work colleagues, “Aja” and they’ve hung out a lot since the party. They didn’t talk much before that night because they’re in completely different departments. But now they’ve gone to dinner several times and movies. They even hung out at Aja’s apartment and watched Bridgerton with their dogs who are also good friends now. She also feels like upper management noticed her too because since the office party, they’ve put her on bigger projects. So anyway, life’s been pretty good since she wore “the dress”. And this past weekend, when we were hanging out and I’m of course droning on and on about my wedding and then bring up what to wear to another’s friend’s wedding, that funk came back and she snapped a little bit. She said it really started off as a joke when she said she was going to wear the bridesmaids dress, but my reaction pissed her off. Looking back at my original post, I didn’t elaborate on my reaction. I was hopping mad yall. And I didn’t ask her not to wear it. I TOLD her she wasn’t wearing it because I paid for it. She said I made her feel like a child and I was her mother and she had to do what I told her to do because I said so. Therefore she acted like a child and threw a tantrum. She also hasn’t worn it anywhere else. Again she just said that to piss me off. After the party, she did take it to the dry cleaners, but it’s been hanging in her closet since. Even though I come off looking like an ass, I’m so happy. I even told her about the Reddit post. She thought it was hilarious. She said she knew I must have been mad because I gave her a Misfit name and not a Hologram name. It’s from a cartoon wet both lived add kids. She feels like Reddit was right since most people called her the asshole. I apologized to and told her the ESH people were right. I've had the serendipitous mishap every once in a while where I've been sent a pant with the wrong print, but ended up liking anyway. My recent purchase is on a whole other level. The Alani cashmere sweater I purchases from their most recent sale had pretty high reviews, and they luckily had a "Last one in stock" in my size. Quickly completed my purchase and had this one get shipped, thankfully, individually from my other items. It stunk upon opening the package and the sweater hasn't even been unsealed. It's covered in obvious dark stains. Just really nasty. Anyone have any alternative favorite brands for early 30's office wear for a white collar art job? Does anyone else feel like Anthro’s petite line is a total joke? This dress is an XXSP, and it’s nearly touching the floor and is so baggy in the waist/bodice I could fit both arms inside I’ve also purchased their super popular Maeve pants in 24P(the smallest size available). They were cute in the dressing room, but bc they are linen, they stretch to the point of sagging within 20 minutes of regular wear. This was the third shop I visited and I was not expecting to buy my dress so soon (fiance and I are eloping next summer in Ireland) but when I put it on, I just knew she was the one. Hi, Everyone! When I was hired to work as a sales associate at Anthropologie in Pasadena, CA, I was ecstatic. As a customer, I had known Anthropologie to be a classy, upbeat store catering to women of all ages. However, I still wanted to try to get a feel for what the job really entailed aside from what the managers presented. However, all of the videos and/or blogs I found were compiled from employees who had just begun their journey with Anthro and whom only had positive things to say about the company. While there were many positive aspects to the job, there were also quite a few drawbacks. I enjoyed working with my co-workers and developed wonderful friendships while working at Anthro. Most of the customers were friendly and respectful, so that was also a plus. Although I won't disclose what the employee discount was (not sure if it is against company policy), I will say that it was pretty generous. There were a few eye-opening things that I noticed while I worked for the company which I want to divulge into: I'll start with the return policy. As many Anthro members are aware of, there basically is no return policy. You can return ANYTHING you bought EVER. That means if you bought something from six years ago and clearly wore it on multiple occasions, you can still return it. The only caveat is that, if you are not a member and do not have a receipt, you will be refunded with merchandise credit. The managers at the store I worked at encouraged the employees to passively shame the customers into keeping the items instead of returning them. This made me kind of uncomfortable knowing that, in doing so, I would basically be going against the company's return policy, which the customer was already fully familiar with. I just think that if the company has been having a consistent problem with people returning damaged items (that they damaged themselves), then the return policy should be changed. Additionally, a close family friend of mine had purchased a pair of pants online and realized they were too big when she received them, so she went into the Pasadena Anthro to try to return them (keep in mind these were pants that had only been tried on once and that had just been bought within the past month). Since she loved the pants, she planned on purchasing them again online- just in a smaller size. The sales associate, who I worked with quite often, nearly refused her return. She told her that she would make the return just this once. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. The return policy specifically states "All merchandise—with the exception of furniture and other oversized items—may be returned at any time by mail or to our stores in the US and Canada. Furniture and other oversized items may be returned within 30 days of the date of delivery." If she had refused her return, she would have been going against company policy. One night, there was a man sitting near the fitting rooms who was allegedly looking for items to buy his mother and wife. The sales associate working the fitting room area at the time was helping him pick out items. At one point, he began to ask the associate to try on sweaters and would specifically ask her to turn around (I'm assuming so he could see her backside). He did this multiple times until the sales associate became deeply uncomfortable and called for the manager. The manager told the associate to go into the back of the store, while the manager took over the fitting rooms. What was worse than the fact that this man was on the brink of sexually harassing an employee, was that he was still allowed to make a purchase. I was completely beside myself when he arrived at cash wrap ready to pay for his items. The fact that the manager chose to disregard the sexual harassment in order to make payroll was incredibly upsetting. The same close family friend of mine had a gift card that was purchased online, but that was valid both in-store and online, and printed it to use at the Pasadena Anthropologie. The Pasadena Anthropologie refused to allow her to make this purchase with her gift card and told her that they do not take those kind of gift cards at their store, which is hogwash since we do take gift cards as long as they are valid in stores. In my time at Anthro, I had accepted probably 20+ gift cards that were printed out from online and all successfully went through. This brings me to my final point, which is customer targeting/profiling: There is a LOT of profiling that goes on behind the scenes. Since Anthro does NOT have any security cameras, the only way that you can get apprehended if you steal something is if a customer or employee physically saw you put the item in your bag. Otherwise, if you enter the fitting room with 10+ items, take the hard tag off of an item and stash it into your purse, you're good to go. Unfortunately, many people took advantage of this liberty and their was a lot of financial loss. The company refuses to install security cameras because they believe in the power of the people aka profiling. There were certain people who Anthropologie would label "Nick" if they suspected them of stealing or cheating in someway. While there were some people labeled "Nicks" who did steal and cheat, there were many who never did. The sales associates/managers never tried to discourage the ones who actually did cheat and steal, but were watch dogs when it came to those who were more soft-spoken and did not actually steal but were still suspected of it. To be honest, in my experience, the people who stole the most were middle-aged white women who would stash items into the purse while in a fitting room. Anyway, sorry for the LONG rant! I just feel like many people were mistreated in this store and I think it's important for the store to be held accountable and change their ways. While I enjoyed most of my experience working there, there were also quite a few things I could not get past. Also, this may not be the experience that people have had working at other locations- this was just my experience working at the Pasadena, CA location.
