Inspired by the Idiot tax thread. I got my mm and cm mixed up when ordering a replacement aquarium lid. Even had the edges curved and polished! EDIT - It was £12, I’ve never ordered Perspex before so had no idea of the cost. There was a slider for mm or cm and I typed in 27x28 but picked the wrong one. This is an update to my previous post- can I eat my Vallis? (Which got wayyy more attention than I expected) SO: I dried and ate some of my Vallis, Salvin and Hygrophila… this is a pic of my jungle aquarium (representative and for catching attention ig) -> so far I haven’t had any problems c: To NOTE: I use no aquarium products except for a bit of SERA Aquatan (Wasser aufbereiten - Water dechlorinator and demineralisation) and a bit of extra (shrimp save) fertiliser. I am very grateful for all the comments and suggestions! I will use my aquarium flaunts and waste as fertiliser for my terrestrial plants now ^^ - However: I washed and dried a good amount of my aquarium plants. I ate them salted and seasoned with pepper like 3 hours ago, for a movie night snack (dried about 87g -wet… idk). So far I’ve had no problems c: It tasted like regular seaweed chips you get with sushi or at any Asia store… if anything changes, I will try to post updates! Helloooooo! I've fallen victim to multi-tank syndrome and now I have a semi-aquascaped 10 gal. sitting next to my community tank lol. I was thinking about ordering plants from a different company then I usually do (Tofu's Tanks, they're really great and I love their products and I totally recommend them to everyone but they're probably sick of me ordering from them all the time lol), and I thought I could ask my fellow fishkeepers of Reddit who/where they get their plants from. As a plant focused person, I hope more folks will give troublesome stem plants a try - the journal contains many tips on how to approach and maintain a stem plant heavy tank. Stem plants present a huge number of species of different forms and coloration, but they are more troublesome to work with as they grow continually upwards, and the bottoms do deteriorate with time. They require good technique to manage in the long run without burning out. It all started so innocently. Someone gave me a plant—just one. I thought, "What’s the harm in a little green on my windowsill?" But then one became a few. Suddenly, I had raised beds. “It’s just for herbs,” I told myself. Then more raised beds. “These vegetables will save me money,” I reasoned. Before I knew it, I was buying fruit trees. FRUIT TREES. Things got real when I got into aquatic plants. They seemed harmless—something pretty for a bowl of water. But that bowl turned into a 10-gallon tank. And then the upgrades started. A sponge filter here. A power filter there. Anubias, horsetail, lucky bamboo. “I can quit anytime,” I thought. But I couldn’t. Now I’m planning a 50+ gallon tank. Angelfish. Corys. A Pleco. Substrate that costs more than my groceries. Fancy air pumps. Custom setups. My dreams are haunted by aquascaping videos and fish stores. It started with one plant. This 10g has been running for around 4 months now. I'm really happy with the growth so far and very proud of the setup. I just finished doing a medium-heavy trim (how I like my steak, lol) on the Bacopa caroliniana (green stem plants on the left and right midground, connecting together at the top) and Ludwiga Big Red (red stems seen at the middle background, behind the wood). The roots of the floating Bacopa were INSANE along the stems at the surface. I had to unwind the stems, flip them, and pinch the roots right at the stem. It took me about 1.5 hours. The Ludwiga Big Red was quick. I cut 3 Beatufiul stems (~15cm, ~12cm, ~10cm). It almost hurt to get rid of it, but I don't have any space for it, and I'm definitely not getting another aquarium (so I say, 😂). If anyone in Bavaria, Germany wants the next set of Ludwiga Big Reds, hit me up. Anyways, for me, I think beginner plants with medium to high tech set-ups are SUPER underrated. Look at my tank. Nothing but easy plants. Nothing fancy here, but I made something I really enjoy looking at. Hey Guys, I'm new to this whole planted tanks game, wanted to see what you guys thought about my first real attempt and what advice you can offer. I started the tank in August 2022, lost so many plants because of the lack of knowledge and the failure to research before hand. I feel I now have things under control, minus the BBA and failure to grow any type of moss, I've used string, used glue, enclosed in between two metal meshes, nothing seems to work, I was aiming to have a moss bush on the left hand side of the tank. The tank is an Aqua nano 60 with its own built in filteration system, I have a co2 system in place; started of with a fluval nano system but have shifted to using soda stream tanks (this is the first week), will move to a proper regulator and solenoid soon enough. I dose once a week (10ml) of the fertiliser shown in the 4th pick. Stock: couple of shrimps, a good few assassin snails (had a pest situation in the earlier stages), kohli loach, and a few tetras. The goal is to have a heavy planted tank that looks like a jungle of plants. I have tried red plants but they don't live, maybe I don't give them a chance. Im doing about 20/30% water changes every week or so. The lighting is new and on a 8hr cycle with a 2hr night blue run. Often in nature where you find fauna, there is flora! Introducing plants into your aquarium not only is good for your fishes health it makes them feel comfy and they look awesome! This post will be about aquariums with plants, not to be confused with the planted aquarium, an aquarium specifically built for plants. This is about adding plants into a basic aquarium to feed purely off aquarium waste and make your fish more comfortable, without the addition of fertilizers. This will cover the community tank and not specialty tanks suck as goldfish or African Cichlid. Plants like fish come from every region of the world and so there is large assortment to choose from. Well in this guide we will be looking at plants that, hopefully, won’t require anything extra from you. Plants will remove things like nitrates and phosphates from the water column, which will keep your fish much happy and healthier. They are however not a replacement for water changes, the aquarium waste process and water chemistry is much more complicated then nitrates and phosphates. The situation: You have a basic aquarium set up, gravel, hang on back filter, fish, a light, maybe a castle. You’ve heard about them, you like them, you want them, but you haven’t set it up to be a planted tank, what to do? Don’t worry there is many different varieties of plants out there and some won’t require anything additional from you! To understand which plants will work for you, we just have to understand how plants eat, and different plants eat in different ways. The Goal To add plants into a basic aquarium with fish and gravel and have them grow without the use of any additional fertilizers. Type: Floating(on surface): These plants float their leaves above the water while hanging their roots down into the water. These plants uptake their nutrition(for our purposes) exclusively from the water(not completely true, but true for our purposes). Floating(in tank): Unlike the surface kind of floating plants these plants just float around in the tank in the water. They get their nutrition exclusively from the water and have no real kind of root system(not completely true) Anchoring type of plant: These plants get tied down to wood or rock and eventually cling to them using their roots. These plants get their food from the water. Mosses: Tied down or floating, moss can offer a huge helping hand in an aquarium with fast growth taking their food from the water. Stem plants: These are an interesting class of plants and each species doesn’t feed in the same way. For our purposes we will consider them to eat a bit of both, what’s under the soil and what’s above it(in the water). Rooted plants: These plants look more like your terrestrial plant with their roots under the soil and their leaves above. These plants will pull nutrition from the soil, via there roots and feed less directly from the water itself. Now each category isn’t exactly true, there’s many variations of plants and many special cases, but for our purposes we will consider them to be true. What plants should YOU try? Floating plants(surface): these are great because they grow quickly and pull a lot of bad things out of the water. To get rid of them is easy you can just grab a handful and toss it out(don’t take any inhabitants for the ride!). If not left in check these plants will fill the top and prevent a lot of light from getting to the bottom, it’s not a bad look but it can make things a little harder for more light loving plants underneath them. These plants include: duckweed(careful once you have duckweed, you always have duckweed), water lettuce, red root floaters, frog bit, water lettuce, etc. if it floats it will probably be fine. Floating plants(in tank): these are also fast growers that are going to remove a lot of bad things out of the water as well. Most do float on top of the water but some can be anchored down for a while some will even root. Any cutting will grow its own new section so remember to keep them in check by trimming! These plants include: water sprite, wisteria, hornwort, anything from this class of plants will probably be fine. Anchoring type: make sure you grab some fishing line, a bit of cotton thread, or a gel type crazy glue(read further on the subject, if you go with glue). Gently but firmly tie the plant onto the rock or wood, do not bury it in the gravel, it will most likely rot. These plants tend to grow slowly and if their healthy they tend to mange themselves. Although they do take some bad stuff out of the water they do so at a much slower rate than many other plants on this list. These plants include: Anubius(many variations), ferns (like Java or windelov), and bucephalandra(many variations) (this class can sometimes be hit and miss) Mosses: you’ll want to attach moss to rock and wood much the same way you do anchoring plants. It is important you attach less moss then you think you need, don’t just put a blob on there, thin it out. There’s many kinds of moss out there but for this situation we’re looking at Java moss. This plant can act almost like an aquarium filter with it rapid growth! Just make sure you keep it in check as if it likes your tank it will take over it! These plants include: Java moss (there’s a really good chance it will do fine in your tank) Stem plants: for gravel these guys are much more preferable over rooted plants. They will root but they’re roots are small and they don’t mind being constantly pulled up. In fact over time you’ll have to pull them up and trim them. There’s all types of stems some grow quick, some slow, and some require special conditions. For our purposes we will look to stems that require no real special treatment other than trimming and replanting. These plants include: rotala rotundifolia, anacharis, Bacopa monnieri, Hygrophila corymbosa, and ludwigia repens (these can be hit and miss) Rooted type: you probably have gravel and it can do OK for some plants, but rooted plants are best kept in more nutritious conditions. They also don’t like their root systems disturbed which is a problem when your siphoning. A space must be dedicated to them. For our purposes these plants should be limited if not avoided as you’ll probably have to still siphon. These plants include: cryptocoryne wendtii, jungle vallisneria, dwarf sagittaria(if you must siphon your tank avoid this class of plant for now) *you can also use a terracotta pot, and fill it with more nutritious substrate like an aquasoil, this would increase the types of plants you could keep significantly. You should do a little more research there as now we’re starting to cross over into the subject of planted tanks. Plants can be hit and miss depending on your conditions. The above plants aren’t foolproof, but there is a good chance they will do well for your tank and should be a great introduction to learning how to keep plants. This is just a starting point, you should do a little extra research on the plant you’re considering. Most of these species can be found at your local pet/fish store, start with one or two species and see how they do in a few weeks. Just like a fish make sure you do your research BEFORE you buy a plant to avoid keeping something you won’t be able to keep alive. Just like a dying fish isn’t good for your aquariums water neither is a dying plant. Also make sure the plants you’re buying look healthy and free of algae.
