Pulled the trigger and bought the cheapest art supplies i could find, it turned into the most fun hour i had in a long time
After about 8 years from when i was 14 and obsessed with art, to today at 22 where i went with the logical IT route (psa i love tech and it very much, i dont hate it), i decided to indulge myself towards a creative outlet and bought the cheapest paper, pens pencils and markers to dive back into drawing. Once i started drawing, it turned into the most fun hour i have passed alone in a long time. Im so amused and happy about this feeling that i wanted to share this little drawing i made in this hour. Hope you all share the same feeling, please tell me what i can do more! Thanks submitted by /u/JackDeath1223 to r/ArtistLounge [link] [comments]

Share your best 2025 art supplies hauls! Mine was: New Brushes!
Share your best art supplies hauls of the year in comments! Did you get any cool Christmas gifts, like something you asked for and received or gifted to yourself? My art supplies were less of a gift from others and more to myself - lots of Rosemary & Co brushes and some W&N Eclipse (discontinued Russian sable for oil painting - I had to buy them from 3rd party resellers at a premium cost) to replace my tired and used up old brushes. I made 3-5 orders over the course of 2025 because I needed different types of brushes for various applications. Mostly I am painting in oils, gouache, watercolour and sometimes acrylic. This may seem like a dragon's hoard to some people but for me it represents approximately 15-18 years of replacements for worn out brushes which are consumables and not collector items. Eventually most of these will become worn down brush stumps and then I break the wood handles in half to sharpen into sgraffito (scratching) tools. Brushes in this image: Rosemary & Co Kolinsky Sable pointed rounds, Rosemary & Co Eclipse Filberts, Rosemary & Co Masters Choice (prob my favorites for blending oils), Rosemary & Co Red Dot one stroke (watermedia, short handle). Rosemary & Co Evergreen (acrylics powerhouse brushes), Rosemary & Co Chungking Bristle (oils and acrylics; wears down quickly, gives a nice textured finish, great for rough and expressive brushwork), - the Chris di Domizio Bristle filbert is one of the most interesting brushes I have used to date so I ordered a few, Winsor & Newton Eclipse (Russian Black Sable; discontinued - amazing oil painting brushes, wear down very quickly if you are working on a rough surface) I usually purchase multiples of one size because there is nothing worse than a brush self-destructing mid-painting, so I like to swap out for a fresh one immediately! Cost effective art supplies?
My sister is a visual artist (painting/drawing). I want to buy her a large gift certificate for art supplies but don't know what I'm doing. AITB for refusing to share my specialized art supplies with my roommate after she ruined my last set?
I’m 19F and an art student. My roommate “Maya” (also 19F) studies business. We usually get along fine, but she has a bad habit of borrowing my stuff without asking. Last semester, I had a really nice set of watercolor paints and brushes. They were expensive and I use them for assignments, so I told her multiple times they’re not for casual use. She still took them for some club craft project and gave them back completely ruined — brushes frayed, paints all contaminated. When I said something, she just shrugged and went “they’re just paints.” I had to buy a whole new set, which was a big hit to my budget. Now she’s asking if she can use my new set for another “fun project” and I told her no. She got annoyed and said I was being selfish. Some of our mutual friends think I should just let it go and share because “it’s not that serious.” AITB for not letting her use them again? submitted by /u/CloverThistle_xx to r/AmItheButtface [link] [comments]

Addicted to buying art supplies
Hello guys I think I have some strange sort of shopping addiction towards certain specific hobbies. I am into painting and reading so I often stuck in art supply shops or buy lots of heavy ass books, and they are costly! And I am even not good at painting and always feel frustrated when using my materials. The paints and paper pads I don’t even use them up and some old papers had been lying there for 8+ years since my middle school age. I don’t have a stable income as a student but my parents are sometimes happy to pay for these stupid expenses. Should I just ask them to stop me? submitted by /u/NourishedCumin to r/shoppingaddiction [link] [comments]

[art supplies] What's one art supply that feels universally disliked by artists?
I'm curious—what's that one tool or material that seems to have earned the collective wrath of the art community? Whether it's hard to use, overpriced, or just plain useless, what supply do you think most artists wish never existed? Let's hear your unpopular (or maybe very popular) opinions! submitted by /u/Appropriate_Head_900 to r/ArtistLounge [link] [comments]

Laurentien pencils, Canadian art supplies
This was just recently posted to r/nostalgia, so I thought this was the perfect time to reshare it here. I used these pencils all through the 90s, as soon as I graduated from crayons. From what I understand, the brand went through several ownership changes before it was discontinued in 2002 by Newell Brands. I want to see these pencils reissued! They performed better than Crayola, but still offered quality at an affordable price. In the past, I have reached out to Palomino (Blackwing pencils) about this on social media, but they didn’t answer. I ended up ordering some on eBay many years ago, and I love them. I’m sure other artists would love to have these for the nostalgia, and for the chance to pass them on to their kids. If anyone has the capital and the means to make this happen, I say go for it! By extension, could we get a list of Canadian made art supplies? submitted by /u/meghan9436 to r/BuyCanadian [link] [comments]

AITA for not explaining to my sister why she was stupid for asking me to share my art supplies.
I babysit for my sister all the time. She pays me the same as anyone else. But she is a lot more entitled than anyone else. My nephews are really good kids but spoiled. They eat when they are supposed to and a don't need to wrangle them much to get them to bed. However they are fascinated with my art supplies. I am not an artist. I just like to draw. I have a few apps on my iPad but I like my paper and pencils as well. I also have oil pastel crayons. My nephews wanted to draw with them but I said no. They complained to my sister and she told me to let them draw with me. The next time I came by I brought pencil crayons for them. Not good enough. They complained and she said I was being mean not sharing. Time before last I just didn't bring anything except a book to read. She gave me shit for being immature. Fine I gave up. I bought them them some cheap oil crayons. I gave them to her as I was leaving. She called me today. She gave them the crayons but did not supervise them. She has spent the last two days trying to get the oil paint off her couch and carpet. She says my brother-in-law is pissed that I gave them art supplies that are so messy. I forwarded her the messages where she called me childish and mean for not sharing. I offered to send them to her husband so he could know whose idea it was. She is mad and demanding that I watch them for free to pay her back for the cleaning. I just said I would not watch the kids any more. She tried to trick me by not having cash when I showed up. I said I was leaving since I didn't trust that she would pay me. Strangely she actually had the cash. She did call our mom and tell on me for giving the kids oil paints without warning her. My mom wants me to keep the peace and offered to pay me to watch the kids and let my sister think she won. I'm thinking about it. But my sister still thinks I did it on purpose. submitted by /u/No_Permit6786 to r/AmItheAsshole [link] [comments]

AITA for canceling my own debt to my brother after he let his kids run amok with my art supplies?
I currently owe my brother around $300—he fronted me some money for a family vacation and said I could pay him back in December (3-paycheck month.) My husband and I are hosting a small Thanksgiving this year with the family members who live within driving distance, and my brother's family arrived on Monday to stay through the weekend. His two kids (3 and 6) are generally well-behaved but they're still kids, so I let him know to keep them out of the bonus room (currently half-finished) and my craft room. You all know where this is going so I'll just cut to the chase. I came home yesterday to find the kids splayed out on the living room floor surrounded by art supplies in ruined condition. They were finger painting with my gouache and had completely cross-contaminated the colors, drawn on my good watercolor paper with copic markers (completely crushing the tips of the markers as well) and ruined or dirtied several items that my friend had brought me from Korea. I confronted my brother, who was nonchalantly watching TV, and he told me that he didn't let the kids go in the craft room, he had gone in himself and grabbed them "just a couple things" to entertain themselves with. He agreed to buy me replacements until I actually started tallying up the cost—then backtracked and said the price was "bullshit" and started insisting that most of the stuff was still in usable condition. I said fine, you don't have to replace anything, but you can forget about vacation money. He snapped at me not to argue in front of the kids, I said who's arguing? Sounds like the conversation is over. Now he wants me to pay the vacation money immediately and work out the replacing of the art supplies after. I feel like he's just going to try to haggle me, or is going to replace my stuff with Crayola and call it even. Update: The cost to replace the ruined items minus the Korean supplies would be about $225. Getting an idea of the replacement cost of the Korean stuff is a bit harder—it was mostly journaling/stationery supplies so I'm not 100% sure how to determine the cost of, for example, a half-used book of stickers or a bullet journal that has several pages scribbled in. There was also a set of stamps that the kids tried to use gouache/markers on, which I'm not yet sure if they are going to need replacing or if they can be cleaned off without staining. I was fully prepared to just compartmentalize this whole thing for the next day to get through the holiday, but my husband ended up making a call to my ex-SIL (brother's ex and the kid's mom) and discussed with her what had happened—she was particularly upset that the 3-year-old was allowed to fingerpaint with supplies that were not specifically kid friendly and non-toxic, and she called my brother immediately and chewed him out for that. She also called our parents about it, which turned into a call from our mother to our brother, also chewing him out for being irresponsible. And although no one brought up the money angle (and I didn't expect them to,) he was rattled enough to apologize for yesterday and hasn't mentioned the money. I think I will just pay to replace what I can and consider us even. submitted by /u/CSmith100000 to r/AmItheAsshole [link] [comments]

AITA for taking my BIL to small claims court over art supplies?
Originally posted by u/broccoliok923 in r/AmItheAsshole on May 5, '23 updated on May 6, '23. Original May 5, '23 AITA for taking my BIL to small claims court over art supplies? A bit of context: I (29M) like to draw and try other mediums as well. As such I've accumulated a lot of art supplies over the past few years. My wife (Sally 27F) also dabbles a bit and we have converted one of the rooms in our home to an art studio of sorts. There's easily a few thousand dollars worth of art supplies in that room and we tend to keep it locked for that reason. Most important to me are my pencils and markers which were not cheap (Chartpak for those who care). Onto the story: Sally and I had her family over for her aunt's birthday a few weeks back and my BIL and SIL brought their kids with them (7F and 6M). We had forgotten to lock the door to the room that day. About an hour into the party I noticed that both kids were nowhere to be seen, so I asked my SIL if she knew where they were. She said that they were drawing in the other room. I asked if my wife was with them and she said she (SIL to be clear not Sally) just told them which room it was in. I immediately rushed over to the art room and found it was a total mess. Most devastatingly was the fact that all my markers were ruined because that kids were using way to much force casing the tips to fray. I yelled at them to get out and they started crying. My BIL ran over and started yelling at me saying they're just kids and it's just markers. I told him that the markers alone were 17$ a piece and he said I was stupid for paying that much. Sally tried to diffuse the situation but my BIL starting yelling at her too saying we can't have this much art supplies and not expect kids wanting to use it. I told him he's paying to replace the markers and other supplies they ruined and he told me to go fuck myself and left. Everyone left shortly after that. I totaled up the damages and I needed to replace about 375$ and found that the kids drew on a piece I had spent the past week working on as well as ruining a finished piece Sally did. I sent him a bill and he blocked me. So I talked with my friend who was lawyer and had him draft a claim for small claims court and a letter to send my BIL (I paid him for this ofc). My wife is in agreement about this but her family has been mobbing us telling us we're being ridiculous over some markers. Only my FIL (who also has taken up painting recently) and my other SIL say that BIL has to pay. AITA? In the comments: We mainly wanted him to admit he fucked up and to apologize. When that obviously wasn't going to happen we wanted tot at least get the money to replace some of the supplies. Not gonna ban the kids, they're not the ones to blame here. they are banned from the art studio without a doubt, but blanket banning them from the house doesn't seem fair. . A breakdown of the supplies worth: 10 markers were destroyed completely ~170$ 19 had the nibs destroyed ~152$ they wasted 8 sheets of my expensive watercolor paper ~30$ They also fucked around with some clay but that was still useable. . Worst part is that we have cheap markers, crayons, and pencils since I sometimes teach the elementary school art classes as a sub and school supplies are rarely enough for an entire class. If BIL or SIL asked I could've gotten them stuff. . In reply to comments about some art supplies being dangerous (sharp, toxic, etc) and the kids were lucky they didn't get hurt/sick: We keep the all the sharp stuff (scalpels, fabric shears, etc.) in a separate lockbox thankfully. We renovated the room last year to be better ventilated since the markers were giving me bad headaches, but it's a miracle they didn't actually get poisoned now that I think about it. . I'm not blaming the kids, their parents shouldn't have told them to use our stuff without consulting us. SIL directed them their, it's not unreasonable to expect that people don't tell their kids to go into closed rooms and use whatever's in there. Update May 6, '23 (Date recovered via unddit) Judgment: Not the Asshole Update: First off, holy shit I did not expect this to blow up. I posted, figured I get a handful of responses, and turned off reddit. I am extremely grateful that so many took the time to read and respond to this post, I'm going to read as many comments as I can, but I can't read them all. Either way, thank you all. Anyways, last night my FIL called my wife and told us to come over. When we arrived my BIL and SIL were already there. FIL sat us down and told us we're figuring this out now and anyone who leaves gets written out of his will. BIL asked if he seriously would disinherit him over markers, and FIL asked him "would you seriously get disinherited than talk this out like adults?" He called all of us childish but figured the threat of court would make BIL admit he was at fault. He also was mad at me for reacting so nuclear and ruining aunt's bday. After an hour and half of talking BIL said he was sorry and would replace the supplies his kids ruined, I apologized for making a scene and Sally and I are taking aunt out for dinner tonight with FIL as an apology. I don't really care about the judgement here since I realize whether or not I was right for taking BIL to court because my asshood from ruining the party far outweighs that. Hopefully things mend well with my wife's family. In the comments: While your financial dispute ended up being with your BIL, it was your SIL who directed her kids to use your art room, without permission. She didn’t even supervise; she let her kids loose on your stuff as a way of keeping them occupied while their parents participated in the aunt’s party. That’s extremely disrespectful behaviour on her part, which could extend to a wide range of other possessions. Has there been any acknowledgement of this and agreement that it’s not going to be repeated? OP: Yes, I didn't include it in the update but it was an hour and a half long discussion and that did come up. She knew I sometimes teach kids art as a sub and figured that all my materials were kid safe, she was incredibly apologetic about the situation, especially after learning that 2 pieces were ruined. Reminder, DO NOT comment on the original posts or contact the original poster. I am not the original poster. AITA? Update: First off, holy shit I did not expect this to blow up. Hopefully things mend well with my wife's family. submitted by /u/BroccoliOk923 to r/AmItheAsshole [link] [comments]
