I just want to share that the Tret + Azelaic acid combo is possibly the best combo my skin has ever received. I have had cystic acne since I was 12. I went through Doxycycline, Benzoyl, Tret (for active acne), Clyndamicin, and all the holistic avenues. I then did accutane at 18 for 2 months and had to stop because of the havoc it did to my body. However, the accutane did eliminate 99% of my cystic acne (i still get the occasional cyst atleast once to twice a year), but the topical bacterial acne I could never figure out. I am 26 now! For the last 8 years I have been trying everything to get this bacterial acne figured out and I finally found it. Just wanted to share this story because acne can be VERY hard to figure out. It took me nearly 14 years to finally achieve the skin I always yearned for. I’m using Tret for my acne scars and Azelaic for Rosacea + Bacterial Acne/Comedones. Tret never really did anything for my active cysts, but it is working wonders for the years and years of scars I have left over. I’ve been using Tretinoin 0.025% for about 6 weeks now and my skin has been tolerating it really well (basically no irritation), and my acne is already improving. Right now my main concern is moderate PIE (red marks), so I wanted to get a prescription for Azelaic acid 15% through Amazon. But the provider told me that azelaic acid and tretinoin “do the same thing” and shouldn’t be used together, and instead suggested benzoyl peroxide or a topical antibiotic. This confused me because I’ve heard that tretinoin + azelaic acid is actually a good combination, especially for redness and leftover marks. I bought and started using Anua Azelaic Acid, Cocokind electrolyte water cream, and vanicream gentle cleanser on October 9th of 2025. By Oct 13th my acne had started. By November i was convinced it was the Azelaic acid making me purge, so i stopped using it and Dec/Jan now my acne is the worst it’s ever been. I occasionally use the Azelaic acid when my face is super red and inflamed but i stopped using it consistently. Ive never had acne until this moment, so its hard accepting the fact that it wont just go away. Everyone keeps telling me to get on Spirolactone but im kind of scared of anything hormonal.. I was thinking differin gel but I dont want to keep purging. I dont know what to do. I also started smoking weed again in December and some people think my flare ups are from that. The information I'm finding online is incomplete and inconsistent! I'm trying to find out as much as possible: favourite brands, time of application during the day, does it mix with tret, etc. I currently alternate 0.05 tret and Paula's Choice 2% BHA every other night. Other than that, it's only cleanser and moisturizer. Water and sunscreen in the morning. I'm hoping azelaic acid can help reduce some redness that's still happening, plus maybe issues outside the face (butt acne 😭). I am 32 years old with very dry and sensitive skin. I have been using tretinoin for a little over 5 years (to help with anti-aging purposes). I just recently started incorporating prescription 15% Azelaic acid into my routine a year ago. I wanted to mention a quick disclaimer that you do not need the exact products in my routine and I am sure there are much affordable alternatives that can help you achieve similar/better results but these are just what have worked for me personally and is tolerable to my skin. Here is my routine below: Am: rinse with only water no cleansers, pat skin with a paper towel then I go in with my serums in the order dieux deliverance > medik8 c tetra adv > medik8 liquid peptides > AB the rich cream > eucerin sensitive mineral spf 50 Pm: wash face with vanicream cleanser, pat skin with paper towel then I go in the order dieux deliverance > (wait 30 mins) then I apply my tret/azelaic acid on alternating nights (I do not use them both on the same day as it destroyed my skin barrier) > ill wait another 30 mins then lastly moisturize with AB the rich cream I’ve tried so many moisturizers to help combat the dry flaking skin that comes with using tret but sadly the only thing that has worked is AB the rich cream. It is ridiculously pricey but I have yet to find another product that doesn’t irritate me or is just as moisturizing. Back in Summer '22, I got a small red bump on my right cheek. I called it the "Zit From Hell"... except it never went away and then every time I went into the sun it got worse. Cut to three years later now and I have some gnarly Type 2. It flares after 60-90 seconds of sunlight/heat, stress, hot water, you name it. It hates me lol But I'm 40 (in two weeks...) so I also DGAF about what other people think so I never bothered to deal with it. The only time it ever bothers me is when it flares up, and thats just because the skin itself feels uncomfortable. I don't have insurance and I live in Florida, USA (sunshine and oppression, wee!!), so all my "medical" money goes towards things like contacts/glasses, mental health, walk-in appts, etc. Not exactly a ton left over to see a Dermatologist. Anyway. I got into an ADHD hyperfix the other day and deep-dived this amazing subreddit. You are all so responsive and kind; I learned a ton and went to CVS/Amazon. Grabbed The Ordinary's Azelaic Acid and Cetaphil Foaming Face Wash (Redness Relief). I also have Clinique's Moisture Surge for the rest of my face, if that's important. I have used it three times now and... look, am I insane or is it already working?! My right cheek is my "bad side" and it feels like its far less red. I'm noticing that it seems dryer, though. I know you all mention a purging/reset process, so maybe that's what this is? I have struggled with excess sweating due to medication and feel like I begin to smell more quickly than the average person… regardless of how often I wash, or how much I scrubbadubdub my pits. Left photos are from May 28th right before I left for my first masseter Xeomin injections (very similar to Botox). I have had TMJ issues most of my life - I grind and clench both night and day and have significantly worn down my molars. After talking to my dentist, we determined Xeomin would be a good option for me (this is who did mine). Right photos are from today. It has made SUCH an improvement for me. No more temple headaches, locking jaw, general tension around my face, and I swear I sleep better, too. My face has gotten slimmer and longer since those muscles have relaxed. Soon after the injections, I started 20% azelaic acid in the evenings, and then .025% tretinoin twice a week in the evening. A few months ago I started noticing some slight redness on my cheeks. I've always had a very even, olive skintone and I've never struggled with redness, so I was pretty taken aback. I figured this was skin changes happening as I'm entering my mid 30s. I did some research (on here!) and saw a lot of recommendations for azelaic acid, so I decided to give it a whirl. Paula's Choice Azelaic Acid Boost (with salicylic acid) didn't make much of a difference. I switched to Naturium's azelaic acid formula with niacimide and vitamin c. And you guys... This stuff is amazing! My redness is 80% gone, but much more impressively I haven't had a single break out since I started a month ago. I didn't have a LOT of acne but I usually have 1-2 pimples in circulation on my face at any given time, worst right before my period. I also get post inflammatory hyperpigmentation so then that acne would leave dark marks for weeks. I always had some mix of acne and a couple of fading marks. Naturium's azelaic acid has cured all of it. No acne. No bumps. It even cleared the dark spots! This stuff is incredible. I havent had skin this consistently clear ever in my life. The only other product I am using consistently is Illiyoon moisturizer. I now layer the Naturium and Paula's Choice cream on my cheeks for extra calming effect on the redness, and I put the Paula's choice on areas I used to get acne as a just in case, since is has the salicylic acid. All of the additional ingredients in these products I already used separately. I have a vit c serum and niacimide, and I used a salicylic acid wash. But I've never seen a result like this. I hope this is helpful to someone else out there! But be warned if you have dark hair, if you get it in the edges of your hairline every night you will start to bleach it. Her deception and refusal to admit she used my credit card, deleted the text alert and then used my work address (she previously complained about our home address being "red flagged" by customs) for the order was too much. I could deal with her constantly ordering the sunscreen but when she used my card without my permission and then said it was identity theft it was enough. I do love her but I moved out because she still tells me and everyone else that I've been the victim of identity theft. I had to cancel my credit card too. Got AA 15% OTC in Italy during a roadtrip, paid around 19€. 30F, combo skin. Routine: AM CosRX Refresh AHA BHA vitamin C daily toner AA 15% gel (Finacea) Cerave salicylic acid smoothing cream Etude House sunprise mild watery light SPF50+ PA+++ PM Tosowoong enzyme powder wash CosRX Refresh AHA BHA vitamin C daily toner AA 15% gel (Finacea) Cerave salicylic acid smoothing cream Unclear if the main difference here is the tone of the lighting lol, although I see a control in pimples and a more homogeneous skin texture. I'll rely on the incoming tretinoin to control my oils.
