I hosted a baked beans tasting party and here are the results
From my r/AskUK post I’ve learned that people have very strong opinions about beans. This was a blind taste test so my friends had no idea what beans they were trying, please be mindful of that in your comments. I refrained from scoring as I cooked them and I didn't want to skew the results. I did however try all of them and I have to admit, quite a lot of them had a unique taste and texture. There were some very good beans, some (I quote my friends here) tasted like ‘Baphomet's balls’ or ‘animal feed’. A few brands unfortunately didn’t manage to get: HP, Co-op own brand, Amazon own brand , Ocado own brand, Biona, Mr Organic Baked beans, Suma (just managed to get low sugar one). I think by the last round, everyone was fed up with beans and would not be able to eat any more as we tried 23 different brands! The spreadsheet with all results. Edit: I just noticed the Tesco baked beans in rich tomato sauce lack 'Y' letter Edit 2: The very reason this bean tasting party started was because my partner loves Branston so much, I couldn't buy any other beans. There were some people in the group that loved Branston. We were all shocked at the results Edit 3: I almost forgot I didn't stress enough how bad the low scored beans were, they were truly disguising Edit 4: The Polish beans didn't make it because they had sausage and bacon in it, giving them unfair advantage. We meant to try them at the end but by that time everyone was full. submitted by /u/bearded-catt to r/CasualUK [link] [comments]

Bread is up 13%; pasta is up 16%; baked beans are up 21%; butter is up 21.5%; milk is up 26.3%; fuel costs are up 42% in the year; and energy costs are up 54% and rising. For ordinary people real inflation is over 20% and climbing.

Do most British people season their baked beans?
According to my boyfriend you're only supposed to take them out the tin into a bowl and microwave them, or to put them in a pot on the stove for like 3 minutes. The only allowed flavour is the tomato sauce they come with. He got almost offended this morning when he saw me daring adding salt and pepper. I have in the past also added a spoonful of stock or whatever I had in the fridge and he never complained before. I've only been in this country for a few years so my dataset really consists of this one point. What do other people do? submitted by /u/izabera to r/AskUK [link] [comments]

I fucking hate baked beans
I fucking hate baked beans. Beans are great, I love beans. Black beans? Unreal. Lima beans? Incredible. Pinto beans? Can't get enough. Any or all beans in chili? In burritos? Bean burgers? In soups or salads?Great uses & I back them heavily. But baked beans? Perfectly good beans covered in a liquid shit mixture of brown sugar and/or maple syrup with nothing to balance the flavor? What's even worse are the people that put fucking ketchup in the mix. Offensively bad, and somehow so tryhard but lazy at the same time. So much flavor, but a fucking terrible one. If you let a 5 year old write a recipe with beans, I'd expect it to come out something like a baked beans recipe. The person that brings a bowl of baked beans to a cookout is exactly as bad as the person who brings the unflavored pasta or potato salad. These are often the same person & they suck. Christ I fucking hate baked beans. Edit: I don't have issue with potato salad, what I have issue with is people that just throw potato or pasta in a bowl with some mayo and call it a "potato/pasta salad" submitted by /u/theconbine to r/unpopularopinion [link] [comments]
