Ignore the username, it was randomly generated. Now here is the much needed context. My ex-husband and I separated over five years ago. It has been messy and emotionally, financially, and physically draining process. While we were together, we had a joint account where all of our expenses were taken out of. After separation, I had requested that my name be removed from the joint account. He did not want the account closed as that is where he was continuing to do the majority of his banking from. This included debits for his vehicle payment, receiving payroll, etc. Over the last several years he has refused to attend the bank together to take my name off of the account. Requests have been made directly and through our attorneys. I even asked as recently as two weeks ago as we were both in the city (we both live rurally) to have this finally done and my name removed. He continued to deny this request. Yesterday, I received a text message and phone call from the bank where the joint account is held stating that the account was in overdraft totaling -$949.99 and the balance needed to be paid instantly. I immediately texted and called my ex husband to have this rectified as this was going to affect my credit score. Once again, he refused to attend the bank to have this completed as he was "too busy". Luckily, I was in the city and went to the branch to see what my options are to not let it affect my credit. My options were either to do nothing, or to pay the overdraft and close the account. I paid the overdraft and moved forward to closing the account. These were funds that I had worked hard saving and was going to go towards extra curricular activities for our children. Now this is where I might be the a**hole. My ex told me that he was leaving on a three week vacation to Italy starting March 31 (this all happened March 30). I chose the second option to pay the overdraft and close the account (with all fees the total was close to $970). Now, all of his debits (vehicle payments, bill payments, etc.) are expected to come out of this account while he is away. Hi guys. I'm using a throwaway account for this, and I've never posted here so please forgive me for my inexperience. A couple of years ago, I (19M) received around $7,000 from my grandmother. I was looking to start college soon, and she wanted to put me in the right direction. I didn't work during high school, because my parents wanted me to focus on school (which paid off, as I graduated valedictorian of my class.) Because of this, I never had access to my personal bank accounts. When I had enough cash and checks that I wanted to deposit, my mom (49F) would just deposit it into a joint savings account that she said belonged to me. Fast forward a year later and I am ready to open a checking account to pay for my own things. My mom comes with me and proposes to the bank employee that we just keep the joint savings account like it is. The employee obliges, and I finally have my own checking account. I check the savings account and I have only $1,000 in it. My mom would often tell me that she needed to dip into it a little and she would pay me back, so I would always let her. I had no idea it was this low. A few months later, my beloved old 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis broke down for the last time. My mom's side of the family was very pushy about the idea of getting a new car. I was not, but I finally caved when I was told I wouldn't have to pay the full monthly payments (which came out to around $900 per month.) My grandmother (dad's mom) and my dad gave me another generous sum of around $7,500 to get me started, and my granny and pops (mom's parents) put around $3,000 down on the car. This month, I was informed by my granny and pops that the money from my grandmother and dad had run out, and I would need to start paying some again. I've been religiously searching for a job, combing all sorts of boards daily and getting plenty of interviews. However, because I didn't work in high school I've found no luck. I've been doordashing, but aside from that I have no source of income. My refund from college financial aid came back recently, to the tune of about $2,000. I want to treat the love of my life to a lovely Valentine's Day, so I set some money aside for daily use and had planned to transfer some more for my V-Day plans. I knew i would need a large amount because of my plans, but I didn't see it as exorbitant. I had to ask my mom for permission to use any of the money, because she immediately put an embargo on my usage of my own refund, saying it needed to be put toward the car. I transferred $200 out for early shopping and going on dates before V-Day. I checked my banking a few days ago, and all but $50 was gone from my account. I called and asked, and my mom told me that I needed to listen to her, that her word was final, and that I could not be trusted with my own money. She blew up at me for moving to live with my dad (long story) and implied that I needed to pay all $900 per month. I’m 27F and my boyfriend is 30M, together a little over 2 years. We live together and split bills pretty evenly, no shared accounts. I make a bit more than him (about 15k a year more), but he has a stable job and pays his part on time. The conflict started this week when he told me he wants us to be "fully transparent" financially because we’re talking about getting engaged this year. He got irritated and said that’s not the same, and that my compromises are basically me keeping a wall up. Then he dropped a line that made my stomach flip: "If you trust me enough to sleep next to me, you should trust me with a password." I said that’s not how trust works, and i pointed out i also don’t have his passwords either. He said i can have them, any time, and he acted like that proves he’s the only reasonable adult in the room. I asked why he suddenly needs this now. He said he doesn’t want to "find out later" that i have debt, or that i’m sending money to someone, or that i’m buying things i shouldn’t. That felt gross, like i was being pre accused. I told him i have no debt besides my student loans, my credit is fine, and i’ve never hidden purchases. He said he believes me but he "wants receipts." I swear those exact words came out of his mouth. I told him no, and that if he keeps pushing i’m going to start wondering what HE is trying to keep track of, because demanding my login isn’t normal. He got quiet and then went cold, like polite angry. He said i’m making a simple thing into a big deal and that i’m acting like he’s some kind of thief. Since then he’s been sulking and making these little comments like "must be nice having a private life" and "guess we’re not at that level." Yesterday he even asked if i’d be okay with him installing a budgeting app that links accounts and then he could see the dashboard. Same answer, no. Now he says i’m sabotaging our future and that i’m being controlling by not letting him in. I feel like i’m losing my mind because i’m not saying we can’t talk money, i’m just saying i’m not handing over access to my actual bank. I tried signing up with Planet Fitness (US), and they accept credit card. But recurring can only be by handing over my bank account information? This is absolutely INSANE. Zero protection for the consumer. And they could basically withdraw money as if I were their ATM. Not to mention the risk to you if they got hacked.
