Ignore the username, it was randomly generated. Now here is the much needed context. My ex-husband and I separated over five years ago. It has been messy and emotionally, financially, and physically draining process. While we were together, we had a joint account where all of our expenses were taken out of. After separation, I had requested that my name be removed from the joint account. He did not want the account closed as that is where he was continuing to do the majority of his banking from. This included debits for his vehicle payment, receiving payroll, etc. Over the last several years he has refused to attend the bank together to take my name off of the account. Requests have been made directly and through our attorneys. I even asked as recently as two weeks ago as we were both in the city (we both live rurally) to have this finally done and my name removed. He continued to deny this request. Yesterday, I received a text message and phone call from the bank where the joint account is held stating that the account was in overdraft totaling -$949.99 and the balance needed to be paid instantly. I immediately texted and called my ex husband to have this rectified as this was going to affect my credit score. Once again, he refused to attend the bank to have this completed as he was "too busy". Luckily, I was in the city and went to the branch to see what my options are to not let it affect my credit. My options were either to do nothing, or to pay the overdraft and close the account. I paid the overdraft and moved forward to closing the account. These were funds that I had worked hard saving and was going to go towards extra curricular activities for our children. Now this is where I might be the a**hole. My ex told me that he was leaving on a three week vacation to Italy starting March 31 (this all happened March 30). I chose the second option to pay the overdraft and close the account (with all fees the total was close to $970). Now, all of his debits (vehicle payments, bill payments, etc.) are expected to come out of this account while he is away. My savings are around $50k. I was out of work for a couple months and did not have any money come in, so I was told I violated their direct deposit policy which will result in them shutting down my account at the beginning of April. They say that they recommend moving my money before this but if I don’t they will send me a check once the account closes. I worked as a bank teller around 2010–2011, and during that time I saw first-hand how powerful families move money in ways regular citizens never could. The wife of the then-head of the DPWH was a long-time VIP client at our branch. She had multiple accounts, but the most alarming one was a numbered account (a “secret account” with no name attached). According to a colleague who had worked there for 15+ years, this account was intentionally set up so that if the government ever investigated bank funds, it could not be traced back to them. These accounts weren’t holding small savings. Across all her accounts, the balance reached hundreds of millions of pesos, with the largest portion sitting in that secret account. What shocked me as a newbie was that this was even possible since banks are supposed to follow KYC (Know Your Customer) rules, requiring names and IDs. Clearly, rules bend when the client has influence. Two incidents stand out: • After-hours cash deposits: The wife once arrived after the bank closed, carrying bags of ₱100 and ₱500 bills amounting to millions. Staff were forced to count and deposit everything into the secret account. • Flood-damaged cash: After a major storm in 2011, she came again… this time with paper bags full of old, dirty, mutilated cash. When asked what happened, she casually explained the money had been buried in their backyard and got water-damaged despite being wrapped in plastic. We still had to process it. Those mutilated bills were later sent to the BSP. This was over a decade ago, and the official in question has since returned to a top position. If they had already amassed that kind of hidden wealth back then, I can only imagine how much more sits untraceable today. This is exactly why ordinary people lose trust in institutions. I’m writing this while sitting at my desk in office because I just can’t focus. Something happened today that really messed with my head. I was standing outside my office at Mindspace (Interface area), Malad, on 18th July 2025. I had just stepped out and was vaping quietly alone. Not near any hospital, school, or sensitive area, just casually standing there, like people do when they smoke cigarettes. Suddenly, a police officer approached me. He asked me what I was doing, took my vape, and then started saying it’s illegal. I told him I was just using it, not selling or distributing. He said I had to either come to the police station or pay a ₹25,000 fine. At first, I was trying to talk calmly, but then things got worse. He took my phone, scrolled through it, and told me to open my bank account app to check how much money I had. I didn’t know what to do. I had ₹2,036 in my account. After seeing that, he said "2,000 de do aur chalo." Out of fear and pressure, I gave him ₹2,000 in cash. No receipt, no challan, no paperwork. Just intimidation. Later, I spoke to a nearby cigarette shop guy who casually said, “Sir, idhar toh police ₹25,000 monthly leti hai har dukaan se, tabhi fine nahi lagate.” So apparently, they take monthly bribes from shops and leave them alone. Meanwhile, people like me, random individuals become easy targets. I didn’t go home. I’m still at work. But I can’t stop thinking about it. Not because of the ₹2,000 but the way it happened. I was alone, vulnerable, and someone in uniform used that power to extort me. After reading more online, I found out that personal use or possession of a vape is not illegal in India. The 2019 law bans sale, production, and promotion and not use. Unless you’re in a no-smoking zone (like a hospital or airport), there’s no legal reason to fine someone just for using it. I wasn't doing anything wrong. Yet, I was made to feel like I had committed a crime. If you vape or smoke, please know your rights. Ask for the section. Ask for a written challan. Don’t just agree out of fear like I did. I didn’t know better, but maybe you will. Just posting this to get it off my chest. Got a job offer yesterday from a call Center company for a $20 an hour position. But my background and criminal check, idk if it will clear. I thought it would clear by end of day today but no word from the employer. Feel like it’s a high likelihood my offer will be rescinded. I have a first time dui misdemeanour on my record and it’s been a hindrance for many jobs I’ve applied to. Tomorrow my gym membership is gonna charge $25, and on the 19th I will be charged $40 for an Affirm loan payment. Not to mention I have a $13k CC balance on AMEX I gotta pay off. Living out of my car too. Tomorrow I got an interview with Lowe’s thankfully so we’ll see how that goes. But needed to vent. I’ve been thinking about this all day and I can’t make sense of it so I’m turning to the Reddit community. To set the scene, I have been married to my wife for 10 years and we have two boys (6 and 10). I work full time and my wife is a stay at home mum. Our eldest boy is in school and our youngest is at home with her during the day. Financially we do ok, there’s no issues putting food on the table and paying bills, but we’re not going on an overseas holiday every year. Last night I was looking at our joint bank account on the internet and I noticed an unexpected transfer (about $100 so not huge). I thought this was odd and looked through the transaction history and saw that there’s quite a few transfers to this account - there doesn’t appear to be a pattern to the frequency or amount. I confronted my wife and she eventually admitted that she has a seperate bank account that she hasn’t told me about. I wasn’t happy about this but what got me real upset was that she refused to show me the account on the internet as I wanted to see how much was in it and what purchases she has made. I called her a liar and untrustworthy which I probably shouldn’t have. I went to bed without talking to her again. I got up early this morning to go to the gym while she was still asleep which is normal for a Saturday. I went through her wallet and found her bank card. On the way home from the gym I went to an ATM and checked the balance (she uses the same PIN for everything), there was only a few hundred dollars in the account. The ATM only provides the balance and doesn’t show past transactions. This seemed to stack up because I would have noticed money missing from our joint account if she had saved up thousands. She also hasn’t made any unexplained expensive purchases - no new jewellery or expensive clothes. Sometimes there would be something new in the house like a pot plant or a new toy for the boys which I didn’t notice was purchased from our account but I just figured she must have bought it as part of the grocery shop. What I can’t work out is why she refused to show me the internet banking details. I feel like she’s really trying to hide something but I can’t work out what it could possibly be? And I guess this is my main question to this group. Could it be that she simply prefers to have some independence? Or could it be something more serious? Thanks everyone in advance for your comments. Not me, but my spouse's grandmother "Frankie" After my spouse's grandfather "Bill" died suddenly of a heart attack, my spouse's grandmother "Frankie" was understandably devastated, but went about closing his estate with a stiff upper lip. Until she got to one bank account that was only in Bill's name, not a joint account with both of them. Despite having the death certificate, will, and other documentation required, the bank absolutely would not let Frankie close Bill's account. But for whatever reason, they would allow her to withdraw money. Being the type to not suffer fools, Frankie withdrew all but $0.01 from the account. The next day, she got a call from the bank's branch manager explaining there were minimum balance requirements, and the bank account would be subject to a service fee if it didn't have a certain amount of money in it at the end of each month. "No problem," Frankie tells the manager, "just let me close the account." "We can't let you close an account in someone else's name," the manager says. At this point, Frankie realizes that it doesn't affect her if a bank account in someone else's name goes negative because of service fees. The manager won't budge and neither will she, so the next month, the account goes negative after the bank assesses a $2 service fee. That was 17 years ago.
