First trip to Europe… Barcelona completely rewired my brain (6 days, July 2024)
July 2024 was my first time ever leaving the U.S., and I went to Barcelona with four friends for six days. I didn’t really know what to expect, but this trip genuinely shifted how I see life. Barcelona has this constant energy that’s hard to explain until you’re in it. The food, the wine, the people, the architecture… everything just felt alive. We’d walk for hours with no plan and still end up somewhere incredible. It made me realize how different the pace and vibe of life can be outside the U.S. We also took a day trip to Tossa de Mar, and honestly, it might be the best beach I’ve ever been to. Clear water, unreal views, and way less chaotic than the city. Still thinking about this trip all the time. Definitely not my last time in Europe. All the ladies wanting to visit Barcelona….
I just finished a week long vacation with my mom in Barcelona. It was…..okay. Literally just okay. Lots of good but lots of bad too, 4/10. Would not recommend. Edit Things that went wrong: Ciutadella Park: filled with rats, there were no signs saying the park closed and no information on Google Maps indicating a closing time. My mom and I were locked in and when we called 112 (911) we were told the police would call us and they hung up even after I said my phone was about to die. My mom’s claustrophobic and HATES rats so she started having a panic attack, I called back requesting an ambulance for my mom and they told me to wait for the police. People were walking by so we were literally asking for them to help us, no one even stopped. Forty minutes later there’s still no call, so we scaled a 10-13 foot fence just to get out. My mom’s over 50 so she was in a lot of pain for the rest of the trip. Constantly being assumed we weren’t going to buy anything…? Would go into a cafe, be in line and my mom would start walking towards the bathroom and they would say “customers only” as if we hadn’t been in line looking at the menu for five minutes. Being stared down by people on the train or in restaurants, especially old people. I’m pretty good at distinguishing the look of “I don’t see many black people, wow” and “I don’t want that black person here”. Went to Tossa De Mar which was absolutely stunning but a couple of girls that were on the beach came to inform my mom and I that there were men coming behind us to take pictures while we were sunbathing. That’s some creepy sh*t. This is a personal thing: I drink vanilla coffee/americanos every day if not multiple times a day and virtually no where had flavored syrups which was extremely frustrating. Final points: I’ve lived in the southern region of the United States my entire life, I know what racism looks like and I know how to distinguish it from a cultural difference y’all I promise😭😭😭. I live in Europe currently and have been traveling around and never experienced anything close to this. I’m glad some people had different, more positive experiences but that just wasn’t the case for me and I will not be going back. I saw everything I wanted to see and experienced enough! Edit 2: I like reading through the comments seeing all the “well I had a great time😊….Im gonna invalidate your entire experience now🤡.” Lord Jesus help us all😭😭😭😭. Anyway it’s not that deep y’all. submitted by /u/Time_Chemist_9155 to r/blackladies [link] [comments]

Guides to visit Barcelona while respecting the locals
I’m from London, so I know how frustrating tourists can sometimes be. When I visited Barcelona, here’s what I kept in mind: I avoided booking Airbnbs, since they contribute to rising rent prices in the city. Instead, I chose small, family-run hotels rather than large chain hotels I made sure not to sit in priority seats unless I really needed them (like for pregnancy, disability, or age). Locals may remind you, and it’s usually well-intentioned I stayed away from rush hour, as the metro gets crowded with commuters and tourists can slow things down. I typically headed out around 10am instead I didn’t ask locals where they eat, respecting that as part of their personal space I stood on the right side of escalators to let others pass on the left, and I avoided walking in bike lanes. And definitely no Real Madrid jersey Locals, please feel free to add more submitted by /u/Tall_Researcher2793 to r/AskBarcelona [link] [comments]

To be tourist in Barcelona
Hello people of Spain, I want to visit Spain this year in May. But first I want to ask some questions to beter understand the situation of the tourism industry and what should I avoid in order to stand against the corrupted tourism culture in Barcelona which bothers the locals. I am fully aware of the airbnb problem, so I will not stay at an airbnb house but at the same time should I avoid some of international hotels? I mean some of them must be bad for Barcelona’s image and for local businesses? And at which hours should I be careful of the local commuting network? I am asking this because at some hours it would be annoying for locals to share the limited space in the transportation system with others. I am fully aware of that asking for restaurants where locals eat is rubbish. So I want to hear your thoughts on about Barcelona. If you were not a local but a tourist there, where would you visit? Which places are underrated? Hope you have a lovely sunday 😇 submitted by /u/candelelf to r/AskBarcelona [link] [comments]

Got robbed in my first day in Barcelona
It happened literally when I was on the way to my hotel from the airport via the metro. I really feel shaken and discouraged and frankly quite unsafe. And I still have 8 days to go. How do I turn things around in my head? Anyone here who experienced the same? Edit: Wow. I didn’t know this was going to blow up. And yes, it was a pickpocketing incident. Sorry I didn’t know the difference (not a native English speaker). Someone here shared their experience getting pickpocketed on the escalator while it was on emergency stop; I think that’s exactly how it happened to me. So folks, especially if you’re a solo traveler, please don’t take the metro from the airport. Thank you all for the sympathy, encouragement, and sharing your experiences. When something bad happens, there’s a lot of self blame. But I just have to remind myself that shit just happens, and shit often happens in popular cities like this. (And based on other people’s comments, it could’ve been worse.) I’ll make this a learning experience and try my best to not let it ruin my trip. submitted by /u/isthisausernameeee to r/travel [link] [comments]

Don't go to Barcelona
So I just want to make it clear, yes I know this city has a reputation. I had no idea that that reputation was so well deserved. I was going to stay here for a week, but after three days I'm out. So far I have had: My phone stolen. Tried to be short changed by a bank, a grocery store, a pharmacy, and four nice looking restaurants all in different parts of the city. Almost broke a kids arm when I caught him trying to steal my wallet. Almost had my bags stolen when I refused to get into a non metered taxi. Now before anyone tries to victim blame me, I am not a guy who starts fights or tries to get under other people's skin. I enjoy traveling, I took precautions before coming (keeping a neck bag, not taking my phone or wallet out in public, I don't get on crowded trains or busses, I stay away from crowds, I don't keep my bag on a seat, or my phone on the table, etc.) I truthfully and honestly tried to give Barcelona a chance. Everywhere in Europe and the UK has been absolutely fantastic. Italy especially has been next level beautiful. But I now have no interest in ever coming back to Barcelona, and I highly suggest that you don't either. There are thousands of beautiful beaches and amazing sights to see in the world, and millions who need your tourist dollars. Go there, don't come here. submitted by /u/StrongLikeBull503 to r/solotravel [link] [comments]
