Anybody know what this plant is? It was labelled as bee balm, but my app IDs it as lemon balm, I can't work out what is Latin make is/genuine variety. It smells like a delicious lemonade, much more delicate than lemon balm, a little hint of bees wax smell/floral, probably why it was labelled as bee balm. Any insights appreciated. (Zone 7a). Noticed these guys on my bee balm and pictureinsect told me they're gonna be fall armyworm moths. They usually just eat the leaves but now I'm seeing them on the unbloomed buds. I know bee balm is prone to mildew. But just yesterday my neighbor suggested I cut it back or remove it because it will get into the soil. She says, once it’s in the soil, it will be hard to remove. Is this true? Should I just leave it like it is, and not worry about it? After thriving for weeks, my bee balm has started turning a bleached yellow and getting withered leaves. Started as only a handful of plants a couple weeks ago but they're now all like this! I haven't changed anything on my end, either, so very unsure if they're sick or just reaching end of live. Increasingly unpredictable seasons make bloom time estimates even more useless, ugh. Seems like basing things relative to other blooms is the move. My coreopsis, rudbeckia, and penstemon are about to pop off, but I’ve got a significant lull right now and I hate leaving the critters high and dry between the ephemerals and trees earlier in the season, not to mention I’d love a bit more going on cosmetically, not that that’s a priority. Due to city bylaws I need to keep this area under 2.5 feet (though I push 3 sometimes). Dry to medium well draining soil, full sun. Any recommendations appreciated! Also, grasses are coming! They didn’t take from direct sowing this area last year unfortunately, I’ll have many a grassy milk jug next year. Hi! I’m a beginner gardener & I recently planted some raspberry bee balm in my garden bed. From what I’ve read, Bee Balm should be planted ground level bc if it’s too high it could leave the roots exposed. Is this flush enough with the ground? Should I try to plant it even lower? I’m in Piedmont NC, zone 8a. Hi friends! Seeking fragrances with a clear bee balm note. I was prepping my garden and was reminded how much I love bee balm (monarda) -- it reminds me of if oregano was sweet? I know it's often compared to bergamot, but I want this plant specifically. The only one I've found/tried is Wild Veil's Alone With Dionysus (blackberries, black raspberries, wormwood, Vermont black spruce and fir, artemisia, bee balm, herbs) which is basically exactly what I want but has NO staying power on my skin (plus insanely pricey). Hi everyone. I need suggestions for a replacement as I’ll be ripping these out of my yard. I got these seeds from prairie moon nursery and it took forever to get a full size plant. Finally this Monarda punctata (spotted bee balm) is finally blooming. It’s so ugly, the colors are really muted and the flowers are just weird. I want suggestions for another monarda that’s actually pretty. I can’t believe I wasted so much time growing this from seed! Besides I don’t see any honey bees on this bee balm- just all these little ugly flying bugs. So these have got to go. I have been seeing a gorgeous white plant from a distance and today when I missed my turn I pulled I to a gas station with tons of it. I did an ID and it said monarda citriodora, which I thought was purple (mine is). I collected some seed heads that look to be from last year and there were seeds. Is this just a different color of the same thing? I would like to plant some in my yard if it's ok and behaves. Will It Brew: Bee Balm/Wild Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa) Foraged August 1, Northern Ohio, USA This is the eighth in my “Will It Brew?” series, exploring wild plants through the lens of tea, broth, and flavor. Thanks for following along! Found: I found a patch of bee balm (Monarda fistulosa) blooming like purple fireworks. I remembered that u/ SquirrelofLIL had suggested it and thought: why not? It smells like Italian seasoning, so let’s see what happens when it hits hot water. ID Notes: Bee balm (Monarda fistulosa) is a native mint-family plant with a ragged, mop-top lavender-pink flowers, square stems and opposite leaves that smell like oregano or thyme when crushed It grows in sunny meadows and roadsides. You’ll often see bumblebees and butterflies all over it, and now, apparently, me too. Preparation: I picked a mix of leaves and flower heads and only did a hot version, and didn’t try a cold brew. I used a small handful of leaves and flowers steeped in just-boiled water for about 6 minutes. The flowers turned white while brewing. Taste Test: The scent was Italian seasoning in full bloom, and the first taste was sinus-clearing for sure. I always try to notice that first intake of breath as I sip hot tea to get a full, round scent. But with this cup there was no need to be mindful because that first inhale slaps you like an anxious Nonna. You knew it wanted to either heal you or feed you. The lingering taste was spaghetti without the sauce or pasta. You get herbs, warmth, and a sense that something's trying to heal you. Best as: A hot tea if you are sick, but probably use the herb for cooking for the most part. It would be amazing in anything tomato based, I think. Seriously, who needs Italian seasoning blends if you have wild bergamot growing nearby? Would I try again? Probably not, if I didn’t have a head cold. It is strong and even the steam was looking for ways to give me advice. Flavor Strength: Hooboy. This one had opinions that were strong and strange and delivered with a Sicilian accent. Verdict: Will it brew? Yes and no. If I had a stuffy cold or scratchy throat, this might be a nice cup to cut through and open the airways. For breakfast or midday on a regular basis? Not so much. Sorry Nonna. Notes: Bee balm is generally safe in small amounts. Like thyme and oregano, it contains thymol, which may irritate sensitive stomachs in large doses. I’ve tried a lot of different plants in this bed, but really only the bee Balm and (with occasional extra watering) Swamp Milkweed have taken off? I have a full sun garden where I've planted Bee Balm, which is going nuts! I've planted a few different breeds, and there's a plant in my garden that looks a lot like bee balm but I'm not sure if it's a sneaky weed! The plants I'm sure are bee balm have all the marks of it: square fuzzy stem, fuzzy serrated leaves growing opposite of each other. My mystery plant looks similar but not quite the same. Similar leaves, but a rounder stem and not as fuzzy (but still a little fuzzy on the stem and leaf). What do you think? Just a different breed of bee bakm? Or something I should yank?
