How does one handle mildew on bee balm? (6b,Pennsylvania)
I know bee balm is prone to mildew. But just yesterday my neighbor suggested I cut it back or remove it because it will get into the soil. She says, once it’s in the soil, it will be hard to remove. Is this true? Should I just leave it like it is, and not worry about it? I don’t want it to affect the surrounding plants. submitted by /u/Swimming_Pin6957 to r/NativePlantGardening [link] [comments]

I stopped overthinking and finally launched something.
Started a gender neutral Lip Hydration Brand with Literally Nothing After procrastinating on business ideas for years, I finally decided to start something. The idea came during a football game. My lips were getting dry, but I couldn't keep drinking water every few minutes because it would make me feel heavy while playing. That's when I wondered: why isn't there a lip balm specifically marketed toward athletes? So I decided to make one myself. From sketching ideas in a notebook to designing labels, sourcing raw materials, testing formulations, and printing packaging, everything has been a learning experience. , but seeing the final product in my hands made it worth it. It comes in three variant all gender neutral (solid 15 gram ) Performaxx - With Menthol for athletes Non-chalant Vanilla - With Bee wax and Mango butter Tinted Vanilla - With bee wax and Mango Butter Where did the name come from? Do you remember the cartoon Tintin? It was a big part of my childhood. Since my lip balms come in small sliding tins, I came up with the name Tini Tin (pronounced "Tiny Tin"). It felt nostalgic . A fun detail: some of the little doodles on the packaging were originally drawn by my niece. I turned them into illustrations (The main character isn't my artwork though 😅.) I'm still at the very beginning of this journey, but it's exciting to see where will it goo maybe it will teach me somthing .. Just sharing this here to encourage anyone sitting on an idea start before you feel ready. You'll figure things out as you go. Short, high nectar production plants that bloom between A. canadensis columbine and M. bradburiana bee balm?
Increasingly unpredictable seasons make bloom time estimates even more useless, ugh. Seems like basing things relative to other blooms is the move. My coreopsis, rudbeckia, and penstemon are about to pop off, but I’ve got a significant lull right now and I hate leaving the critters high and dry between the ephemerals and trees earlier in the season, not to mention I’d love a bit more going on cosmetically, not that that’s a priority. Due to city bylaws I need to keep this area under 2.5 feet (though I push 3 sometimes). Dry to medium well draining soil, full sun. Any recommendations appreciated! Also, grasses are coming! They didn’t take from direct sowing this area last year unfortunately, I’ll have many a grassy milk jug next year. I have one little June grass currently blooming that I’m completely in love with 😍 submitted by /u/GardenGnomeAnarch to r/NativePlantGardening [link] [comments]

Ugly bee balm.
Hi everyone. I need suggestions for a replacement as I’ll be ripping these out of my yard. I got these seeds from prairie moon nursery and it took forever to get a full size plant. Finally this Monarda punctata (spotted bee balm) is finally blooming. It’s so ugly, the colors are really muted and the flowers are just weird. I want suggestions for another monarda that’s actually pretty. I can’t believe I wasted so much time growing this from seed! Besides I don’t see any honey bees on this bee balm- just all these little ugly flying bugs. So these have got to go. I’m on the Colorado front range so something that needs regular watering would be preferred as I’m putting in sprinklers for my grass this spring. submitted by /u/this_girl_that_time to r/NativePlantCirclejerk [link] [comments]

Bee balm, is this a hostile take over?
I’m cleaning up my garden beds for spring planting and I threw some perennial bee balm in these beds last year. It was gorgeous. I loved it. Pollinators loved it. 10/10. It looks like it thrived over winter below ground and is sending up a multitude of shoots. I don’t have an issue with this currently it’s in a 2”x2” space currently, but it’s clearly spreading. For those of you who keep bee balm, is there a trick to managing it? Should I be separating it yearly? If so, what technique have you found works best?Thank you so much! submitted by /u/Gardeningcrones to r/gardening [link] [comments]

What's happening to my bee-balm? Funny not funny.
So much for the bee balm that I've been trying to coax along for the last 3 seasons! Mrs. Snapping Turtle wants to lay eggs there. We had a large female snapping turtle in the garden 3 seasons ago. We were able to untangle her from the netting, put her in a wheelbarrow, and take her down to the creek that runs on our property. I'm afraid this little lady is here to say. She's right at the garden gate, too! Yay for me! submitted by /u/Mymoggievan to r/gardening [link] [comments]

How bad is bee balm, really?
I started a pollinator garden last year in zone 7A but it's still pretty sparse. It's out of range of my sprinklers AND gets less sun than I thought, so it's full sun in the winter but trees block on the east AND west during the summer! So part shade in the summer. It's also easy access for deer and rabbits. And it's pretty big, at least 5000 square feet. I have 6 trees, several shrubs (abelia, nandina, gardenia), a handful of perennials and self sowing annuals (butterfly milkweed, rudbeckia, canna lilies, irises, penstemon, etc), ajuga groundcover, and I'm embracing as many native plants as I can (native milkweed, pokeberries, wild rudbeckia, lowbush blackberry, st. john's wort, etc). I'm going back and forth on sowing bee balm to help fill in. I know that it's in the mint family, but it's not listed as invasive in my area: https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/monarda-didyma/ What do you think, would you plant it in the ground, use several large containers, or just forget about it? submitted by /u/csdude5 to r/gardening [link] [comments]

Bee Balm questions
I purchased these plants about 2 months ago from a local garden nursery. I've been wanting Bee Balm for years and was so happy to finally get some!!! My question is, will it take two years for these to bloom? I've read that it typically does when planting from seeds but I'm not sure when these were started. Also- is it possible to replant some existing bee balm? My grandmother has some that is around 5 years old so could I collect some of hers and transplant them here also? I live in Western NC and the bees really suffered due to Hurricane Helene. I'm trying to plant stuff that will help our pollinators so if I can get the Bee Balm blooming it would be great!!! Any other pollinator plant recommendations please let me know!!! submitted by /u/LilithOfTheVanity to r/NativePlantGardening [link] [comments]

How can I keep bee balm blooming all summer?
I have bee balm and blunt mountain mint in the same bed. The bee balm bloomed profusely in early to mid spring, but is slowly losing its petals now and I don’t see any new blooms. (This picture was taken 2 weeks ago) The blunt mountain mint, on the other hand, is really coming to life. ☺️ Is there anything I can do to encourage new growth on the bee balm? Cut it back? Or, pinch off the spent flower heads? (I also have spotted bee balm in the same bed. I’m expecting it to bloom some time this summer) Thanks! Lower Alabama. How aggressively should I thin bees balm? Does it even have a place in a garden without taking over?
A couple years ago I planted some from my mom’s house. It acclimated very well, to say the least. I’m worried that it will go out of control like lily of the valley or mint. The runners all seem shallow and easy to pull.. is pulling up the unwanted plants/ growth enough, or will it still spread like crazy and cause trouble the longer it’s left in? submitted by /u/tsukiyaki1 to r/gardening [link] [comments]

Coworker owns a bee farm; he gifted me honey and lip balm for Christmas
He assured me that his bees are well cared for and that he does not ship his bees off to other places for a profit (which is apparently how a lot of modern bee keeps make a large percentage of their earnings) because he wants to keep them safe under his watch. He runs a very small operation, and his honey has won national blind tasting awards. What should I do with the honey? Is there anything about this situation that would make this honey less bad than store honey? I'm genuinely asking out of mild ignorance, because I have avoided honey just because I know it's not vegan, but I'm not very informed on the environmental impact, etc. Extra detail: He is the nicest man, and I trust him. submitted by /u/Bizziemizzlizzie to r/vegan [link] [comments]
