Hi guys, I just wanted to share something that happened today. All my life, being the elder daughter, I’ve always felt like it’s my responsibility to do things for others buying things for family or friends, helping out whenever I can. Somehow it always felt like that was my duty. But when it comes to buying something for myself, especially something expensive, I overthink a lot. I’ll think about it hundreds of times and most of the time I just end up not buying it. But if it’s for my loved ones, I won’t even take a second to spend money. So today my husband took me out for Eid shopping. We’ve been married for 11 months now, and apparently he had noticed this pattern in my behavior. He took me to the mall and straight to some high-end stores for suits, sandals, and other stuff. And he basically didn’t give me a chance to overthink anything because he knew if he left the decision to me, I probably wouldn’t buy anything due to the price. He made me try a bunch of outfits and then chose things himself. In the end, he forcefully bought a lot of stuff for me almost up to a lakh. The funny thing is, I’ve been earning for the last three years and I could easily afford things like Birkenstock footwear, but I never bought them for myself. Today he did. And a lot of other things too. I got really emotional because I’m someone who never asks anyone for anything. But he noticed it on his own and did all this for me. It honestly felt really nice, even though a part of me is still thinking about how much money was spent haha. Just wanted to share this little moment. I’m sharing a bizarre and uncomfortable experience I recently had in the hope it doesn’t happen to others. A few weeks ago, I met up with a former coworker—who had just retired—at a coffee shop near U of C. As we were getting up to leave, a woman sitting behind me complimented my outfit. She was extremely enthusiastic about it, which felt a bit odd since I was wearing nothing special—just a baggy wool sweater and pants. She then did the same to my coworker, raving about her boots (plain Birkenstocks). At first, I chalked it up to her being overly friendly and positive. She had a very confident, personable energy—almost the kind that makes you feel like you want to be friends with her. She asked how we knew each other, and we explained that we used to work together at a large consulting firm. She then mentioned that she owns a business helping entrepreneurs start their own business. Given my background and network, that seemed worth engaging with. When we asked where she works, she said, “Online—everything I do is online. But I only meet people in person. I don’t like communicating online; it’s more personable this way.” She also said she has zero social media presence and believes social media is toxic. That felt a bit contradictory, but I didn’t overthink it at the time. Before we left, she suggested we get coffee sometime. Both my coworker and I agreed, exchanged numbers, and then she asked if she could hug us. The hugs were long—like five seconds each—and very intense, as if we were long-lost friends. When we commented on it, she mentioned a book called Captivate by Vanessa Van Edwards and talked about the psychology of hugs and building trust. Later that day, she texted me saying she’d love to get coffee soon and would reach out the following week. The next evening, she called and left an overly enthusiastic voicemail about how wonderful it was to meet me and how excited she was to schedule coffee. I called her back, and we agreed to meet at Phil & Sebastian in Chinook Mall the following weekend. She asked for my email to send a calendar invite—which I never received. When I arrived at the café, she showed up overflowing with excitement to see me. Again, it felt a bit strange, but I told myself she was just very friendly. She complimented my outfit again, saying I looked “beautiful” and “elevated,” even though I was dressed very casually. She then started chatting with the barista as if they knew each other, forgetting their name. The barista seemed slightly annoyed but stayed professional. She also complimented several women who were leaving the café. I’ve honestly never met someone who hands out that many compliments to strangers. Once we sat down, she asked about my life. I shared a bit about my job, my enjoyment with personal investing, and that I recently bought a house. She talked about retiring in a few years and moving to Costa Rica—she can’t be older than 40, which I found impressive. When I mentioned I had just come back from Costa Rica for an ayahuasca retreat, she seemed bored and uninterested, so I pivoted and asked more about her. She shared that she’s originally from Nigeria and moved to Alberta at 14, that she struggled to make friends growing up, and that her family is very Christian. She again emphasized that she doesn’t use social media because it negatively affected her self-worth. She then talked about meeting a woman in university who became her business partner and “changed her life” by helping her become more confident. About 45 minutes in, another woman sat at the table beside us. My coffee companion suddenly lit up and greeted her with excitement, complimenting her blue hair and outfit. I thought it was a coincidence—until the other woman said they had just met at Core Shopping Centre downtown the week before. That’s when the red flags really started popping up. The three of us chatted briefly about Captivate and the psychology of building trust. The woman I was meeting started talking about techniques for making people feel good—essentially how to earn trust quickly. Then, very abruptly, she thanked me for my time and said how nice it had been chatting. She stood up, moved over to the other woman’s table, and handed me a small box saying, “This is for you—my own skincare products.” She gave me another long, tight hug, as if we were close friends. It was clear she had scheduled back-to-back coffee meetings and was moving on to her next target. She never mentioned seeing me again. When I got to my car, I looked up the skincare brand. It was Amway—an MLM. Suddenly everything clicked. She was recruiting, and this was clearly her routine: approaching women in public spaces, showering them with compliments, building quick trust, and seeing who might be a viable recruit. I threw out the products and blocked her number. I don’t think I was an easy target, and once she realized that, she moved on. But the entire experience felt manipulative, and I’m honestly upset that she wasted my time. She presents herself as confident and successful, which makes people naturally want to engage with her—especially women. Sorry for the long story. I wanted to include the details in case this happens to someone else. "But those five years at home – I wasn't running around wearing beautiful outfits, I was probably in Birkenstocks and sweats like the rest of us, especially during Covid, or just barefoot at home, but I was making a lot of jam." This is clearly a WHOPPER lie because no one who has been canning for years would hold the tongs like she is in one of many last couple weeks fails (even for a photoshoot) it would be as crazy as standing in front of your bike ready to go for a ride w it upside down... My boyfriend seems to always wear Hey Dudes when wearing shorts. I get it, he says they are comfy and look better than flip flops in most settings, but for some reason I just can’t stand the way they look. Well, folks, it's that time. Me traveling to and fro Costa Rica getting treated to seeing crazy entitlement around flying. Flying used to be rare and fancy. Now it's just a flying bus! Oh boy did I see lots of it, but this one kind of took the cake. The other day I had a four hour international flight to get home. I'd already booked a business class seat. Larger seat equals more comfort instead of being squished together like sardines in main cabin. When I went to preboard the gate agent told me she'd moved me farther forward. Okay, cool beans, thank you! They wheeled my disabled ass to the door of the plane and I discovered I was now sitting in first class! Score! I love first class but it's usually prohibitively expensive so I rarely buy a first class ticket. The only other person preboarding in a wheelchair is sitting just in front of me in first class, and I had just watched her make a huge production of getting aboard, crying, whining and yelling. I sense she's a tad dramatic because she's only got an over the counter not so supportive knee support on, no crutches or cane, nothing medical issue that you'd get with a serious knee injury or disease. But whatever, people are entitled to be as weird as they wanna be. Once regular boarding started I got to see my seatmate for the flight, a man with a magnificent quiff of chestnut hair in a man bun and a large beard. He was dressed in old shorts and an old stained tee. I'd watched folks looking like they bathed in hand sanitizer giving him wide berth and a variety of not very friendly looks in the airport waiting room. I'd seen how they were treating him and thought I'd love to know his story, so lo and behold he's sitting with me, just behind Yelling Knee Lady. We settle in, and over wine we start talking. He's a federal and military retiree, just like my husband, and he's traveling around the world, going places that strike his fancy with merely a backpack. We're having a good conversation with a bit of laughing thrown in, but we're speaking at regular conversational level. Not loudly at all. We've only been airborne 30 minutes or so when Knee Lady starts yelling for the flight attendants to move myself and this gentleman because, her reasoning, we were "dirty hippies" who didn't belong in first class. He and I are looking at each other and LAUGHING at that! We're both post 60, yes he's dressed very casually but is clean and doesn't smell. I'm wearing an outfit of linen tunic printed in an etole fabric, black pants, and Birkenstocks. This is an outfit that one of my kids teases me makes me look like I am on my way to teach yoga in Connecticut! Sort of alternative, sort of suburban upper class lady. Thankfully the flight attendant had a lot of common sense, telling Knee Lady that she's not moving us anywhere, but she will ask us to pipe down some if that helps Knee Lady. We both smiled at the attendant and that she didn't even have to ask, we'll be more quiet. Lunch followed by a nap. When we arrived in Costa Rica I got to see a Jetway Jesus experience as Yelling Knee Lady was suddenly able to walk without much trouble once her suitcase arrived. I just had to laugh at that as the guys at the airport pushed me out to my car. So I made a post on reflection on shifts in fashion in the previous ten years, and I thought I would continue this exploration. I also suggested that in one of my comments, and it was well-received, so here we go! This time, I will try to elaborate a bit on some things I did not touch on in my last post, and perhaps develop some thoughts that I briefly mentioned with more examples. As last time, these are just my observations. I’m biased in many ways - by age (32), geography (I live in the second largest city in Sweden, Europe), and other factors - social circles, social media, interests, social class. As previously stated, I’ve compiled this by comparing today with yesterday (2014). I’ve compared capsule wardrobes from 2014 with capsules from today. I’ve been on Instagram, TikTok, and looked at blogs I used to follow. It’s by no means a structured analysis, I’ve just looked around and made observations, and people seemed to find it interesting and helpful. I also try to trace the lines in my own discovery. I'm sorry for using skinny jeans as a temperature check all the time, but it's just so easy to look at jeans. As previously stated, in 2014 skinny jeans were the basis of every capsule wardrobe. I wore skinny jeans 24/7. I had the Thursday model from the store Weekday in a light wash, dark wash, and black. In 2016 I posted fits here with their jeans. That same year I went to Berlin and oversized denim was in every vintage store. That year I bought my first pair of mom jeans. I thought they made me look huge. Its also the same year Jeanne Damas started the brand Rouje and cropped flares briefly was a trend among it-people, which in my mind was a glimpse of trends to come. 2018 I bought my first Lewis 501. Since 2021 they have been my jean wardrobe staple, and today I have no skinny jeans in my closet. Secondly, I try to map out the macro picture; what are the big shifts in fashion (as I see it), that has changed what we view as norm and neutral. Like when we build a capsule wardrobe, what do we consider to be the ‘neutral’ jean? I’m not trying to capture the micro-trends; the seasonal it-pieces, or the one-season return of something really out there. It’s really hard though - what is the start of a changing pattern and what is a fleeting trend, I would love to hear if you agree/disagree or if you have seen any other patterns! I also want to point out that I feel like some things might have become "outdated" or "cringe", but some things are still considered to look good, it's just not the norm anymore. But. Onto the observation! General/misc: I feel like a lot of silhouettes and trends from the 2010s are starting to feel oversaturated, tired, no longer novel or sometimes "cringe". On the other hand, a lot of silhouettes and trends from the 90s and 00s that previously felt tired, oversaturated or "cringe" is now so far away in the past that they now start to feel fresh. The trend is also to go from top-heavy to bottom-heavy, but we also see a slimmer silhouette. I feel like we are going to see a lot of 70s inspired fashion thereof. Right now big-on-big is also on trend, and i think therefor we also see some 80s and 90s inspiration, but i think we will move into a slimmer top in the future. We also se som long slim silhouettes. I feel Sezane and Rouje are very current brands. I feel like Ganni, Cult Gaia and Conner Ives are very in the future. Streetwear is the new hipster. I really think so. If you are young and cool, you don't have a plaid shirt, lace up boots and selvedge jeans. Instead you have a hoodie, a bumbag and trainers. Linen (the fabric) has had a moment for the last few years, and I do see it continuing for a good while. I do however think that the ”influencer - linen basics - unmade beds - beige” has become a bit oversaturated. I think however linen as a fabric is just in the start of its revival, and i hope for more colour in the future. Although mum jeans are the new neutral, Cargo pants, wide leg and bootcut is becoming more trendy, already a staple in young gen z's closets. I feel like we've seen wide leg creeping up for a while, but bootcut and cargo pants feels new. I feel like french style is not as popular anymore. Not every capsule talks about the breton as a classic, and i more seldom hear about how French girls know how to skincare/effortless hairstyling/some other glamourised idea about the French girl. I feel like there is still some romance around France (especially with the launch of the tv series Emily in Paris), but the former hype became somewhat silly. Outerwear The moto jacket, although still cool, is not as prevalent as it was (2013). It’s not the ONE cool jacket to perfect every outfit. People don't constantly dress up a tee with a moto or dress down a dress with a moto. And among leather jackets, other shapes are becoming more popular. Generally, I feel like the hipster trend was taking silhouette inspiration from the 50s and 60s, favored more structured jackets, (flannel shirts, moto jackets, cropped corduroy jackets), whereas the trend now is both more oversized - both puffier - Cropped puffer jackets are a huge trend - but also longer, oversized blazers and longer jackets, taking inspiration from the 90s. Dresses I think this is pretty representative what an LBD could be in 2014 (also styled with the cropped leather jacket). Today I think a slinkier, softer silhouette is more prevalent. I think midi slip dresses are the little black (or colourful) dress of today. I really think dresses are moving towards slimmer and longer shapes. Shoes Like i previously said, shoes in general are chunkier. I just wanted to reiterate this with some more pictures. Compare these loafers to this loafer. Or these oxfords to these oxford shoes. If you see oxfords - I rarely see Oxford shoes or other lace-up shoes. I feel like the loafer has completely taken over the spot as the business casual shoe of choice. I think the new silhouette is a bit less sleek and business appropriate, but it’s really nice with a good grip. Birkenstocks reign supreme among sandals. Sandals are tricky. I almost feel like none except birks are on trend right now. And even when they're not Birkenstock they still look like Birkenstock Some people say the ballet flats are coming back, I would love it if that was true. The ballet flat has not been trendy for a long time. I think however, with boots and shoes being chunkier, there is really a renewed space for the ballet flat as the dainty shoe. The trendy sneakers of today are - pardon my opinion lol - SO ugly. It’s all out workout gym trainers. Like what is this? Sleek sneakers are not as trendy. Hats Hats used to be a big trend. I never see them anymore and when I do I feel like it looks dated. I do love the hat though - I have a burgundy one that gives a very noir feel to an outfit. I feel like even the cap is not as popular as it used to be. On the other hand, the bucket hat is really popular and has become mainstream. Hair scarves are also really having a moment, which I think is lovely. Especially tied in a triangle around your hair. Hope it stays. 🤞 Accessories I touched on it last post, but I think bags are moving towards retro 90s and 00s shapes. As I previously touched on, the short strap (on bags) is on its way into fashion. Prada has a real it-bag, which is a rerelease of a 2005 bag. It’s both incredibly current and timeless, which I think is key to its success. The baguette bag is really popular; I do think it is lovely but do I want to sweat on my bags? It’s better than the clutch at least, freeing up your arm. I also think this type of bag will be more current as opposed to this type that I feel we've seen. Alright, this was my part two. I think I was a bit bolder in this part and dared to sometimes move away from the changing norms I am pretty sure of and also dare to include some trends and predictions. I don't think I will do any more parts to this, but I might write more in the future on trends I am excited about, now that I'm getting deep into contemporary fashion. Hope you have enjoyed it!
