Why your DIY carpet cleaner might be making stains worse (and what to do instead)
Hey everyone! Professional cleaner here from BC. I see a lot of posts about renting Rug Doctors or buying Bissells for home use. While these are great for maintenance, I often get called in to fix "DIY disasters" where homeowners accidentally set stains or left too much moisture, leading to mold risks. Here’s the professional perspective on carpet and upholstery care that might save your fibers: 1. The "Blot, Don’t Rub" Rule is Real Rubbing pushes the stain deeper into the backing. Blotting lifts it. If you’re doing it yourself, use a white cloth (so dye doesn’t transfer) and press hard. 2. Over-wetting is the Enemy Home machines often leave carpets soaking wet. In BC’s humid climate, this can lead to mildew smells within 24 hours. Pros use high-extraction tools that remove 95% of moisture. If you’re DIYing, run extra dry passes and use fans immediately. 3. Know Your Fiber Wool carpets react differently to enzymes than synthetic nylon. Using the wrong cleaner on wool can cause browning or shrinkage. Always check the tag! When to call a pro: If the stain is older than 48 hours, or if it’s pet urine (which sinks into the pad), DIY sprays usually just mask the smell temporarily. You need hot water extraction to pull it from the padding. Hope this helps someone save their rug! Overwhelmed by all of the choices for spot cleaners. Which ones work well in homes with pets *and* won't break down after a few years?
Bissell's website alone is giving me a headache because so many of them look the same and I can't easily tell the difference. Right now I'm considering the Bissell Little Green HydroSteam and the Shark Stain Striker Hair Pro. If anyone owns or has owned either of these, could you weigh in on if they'd be a good fit for what we need? I'm really hoping to not need to buy one every 5 years, so longevity and reliably is important to me. Similarly, if you have any alternative suggestions I would love to hear them! Here's a bit about what we need: - Must be pet-friendly (both for pet accidents as well as generally not malfunctioning when dog hair inevitably gets into the machine) - Good at handling clean up after spills (my sister will be having a baby soon so I'm going to need something that can handle kid messes for babysitting, etc.) - Portable size only, we don't have space for the full vacuum cleaner size - Ideally it'll be suitable for upholstery, rugs, and carpet. Including the carpeting in the back of our car. Most of our house is hardwood, but I imagine spot cleaners aren't the best idea for wood floors? - No price ceiling, we just want something that works and will be reliable for a very long time. submitted by /u/LanternMoss to r/VacuumCleaners [link] [comments]

BISSELL ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet Pro Plus. Best practices?
I own the BISSELL ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet Pro Plus. I’ve read the manual and used it per instructions. But, I have questions from reading this subreddit and watching YouTube. Do you use the exact amount of carpet cleaning liquid, or do you use less? I’ve read less is more as too much actually makes the carpet fibers attract more dirt. I’ve used both Bissell and other brands of cleaning solution with similar results. Do you only use the brand recommended by the manufacturer? Why or why not? I always use hot tap water. Why would you use cold or just warm? From reading how to get better results, I learned that a rinse with vinegar/water or citric acid/water is highly recommended to get a cleaner result and also to neutralize the detergent solution that remains behind. Is this the best method? I used 2 teaspoons of citric acid powder to one full container of hot water for the rinsing solution. What ratio and ingredients work best? I’ve always been relatively shocked by the dirty water in the collection tank. Is my carpet really that dirty? Does the cleaning solution turn dark on its own when processed through the machine regardless of dirt collection? That would seem devious on the part of the manufacturer. Tricking us into thinking the carpet is still dirty and thus using more product? It could happen…. Today after the first clean, I did the citric acid rinse. The waste water was more gray than dark gray. It was not clear. I did it again with plain hot water and it was lighter gray still. Not clear though. Should I expect clear water at some point? And yes, I rinsed out the collection tank between rounds to remove residual dirt. In your experience, what technique works best? Constant trigger for solution? Trigger in only one direction? Fwd or Reverse? How much do you go over the same area to get a good extraction? I usually forward and back with the trigger on and the forward and back with. It trigger to pick up the moisture. I do a 4x3 foot area or thereabouts and then move to the adjacent areas with the same technique. Is that good or bad? Is there a best way? I just want to get a nice clean carpet and it is effective on most areas. High traffic seems to be harder to clean. Indeed even after extra rinsing I am still getting gray water. Not as bad as round 1 when it’s almost black. But certainly not clear. TIA? submitted by /u/Independent_Copy5458 to r/CarpetCleaning [link] [comments]

As a Pro Carpet Cleaner Sincerely...
Please Stop trying to clean your own carpets. There is no magic electric machine you can buy, rent or borrow that will do anything meaningful for you. You are going to damage your carpet and then still have to call a professional but guess what, odds are, now he will want to charge you even more to clean up the mess you made. This is simple physics, an electric wall socket can produce 15 to 20 amps max at 120 volts which can power an electric motor up to about 1 horsepower max. But the motors inside typical consumer steamvacs, rug doctors ect are probably closer to 1/8 of 1 horsepower.... Why am I telling you this? Because the average Gas Powered Engine found in most professional truckmounted machines is between 25 to 45 horsepower. Do you now see what the problem is? Professionals use powerful gas powered machines because no electric machine aside from a few that are designed for professional use can produce even a 10th of a fraction of enough vacuum power to actually clean a carpet. There is no electric machine that does not cost thousands of dollars that can clean a carpet, they do not exist, it is a myth and a scam that consumers have been falling for every since the first one was sold many decades ago. And to further drive home the hard truth, there are very few decent consumer spot cleaning chemicals that you can buy off the shelf at home depot that will actually do anything meaningful to help you clean a spot, but without proper technique and understanding of how to spot clean even those wont help you. Most of the products on the shelf are designed to stay in your carpet permanently and attract dirt... Resolve, Bissel, Rug Doctor Cleaning products are designed to stay in your carpet and attract dirt. Because they know that once that dirt sticks to that spot you tried to clean, you are going to reach for that same can of junk again and try to clean it again, and at first it might appear that you got the spot out but a month later the spot is back and blacker than ever. But you try again and go buy another can of it. You are getting scammed... Now here is how to get clean carpet and not get scammed. Call a Reputable Professional. Google is here to help, find local cleaners that have good reviews. Actually read the reviews and see what people are saying, read a bunch of reviews to determine if these reviews seem like they were written by actual customers. Never Call a Franchise! Do not call the stanleys, the oxyfreshs or the sears companies. These companies are run like a fast food establishment, fast poor quality service and they want to sell you the large combo and do 5 to 7 jobs a day as fast as they can. You want an Owner Operator, a guy who cares about the service he is providing and wants you to come back for more. That is it. That is all you have to do to get clean carpets and never have to worry about whether you just ruined your carpet because it was wet for a week. "But I cant afford that, The Pro quoted me $600" well can you afford to install another $15'000 worth of carpet? No? Then why does that $600 quote seem so expensive to you? It's not, but new carpet is expensive. Use your brain people, carpet is a long term investment in your home, take care of it the right way, find a pro you can trust and stick with them, get it cleaned once a year and for the love of god Do Not Try to clean up Pet Urine with Chemicals you found at the grocery store, they wont work I promise. submitted by /u/knifeknerdreviews to r/CarpetCleaning [link] [comments]

Any recommendations for pet steam cleaners $360 or less best at removing dried or days old dog diarrhea from carpet?
my sister brought over her dog before leaving for a trip, the dog is aggressive and elderly and last night had diarrhea on the basement carpet, stinking up the whole house, I could smell it upstairs and couldn’t go down because I risk him charging at me, he isn’t familiar with me. My mom said she’d clean it up in the morning since the dog is less aggressive with her but never did and left for work, we do not have a functioning pet steam cleaner or a shopvac, so I need recommendations for anything about getting day old dog diarrhea out of carpet. my budget is $360 or less submitted by /u/Mystical-Moth-hoe to r/CarpetCleaning [link] [comments]

Tired of damp carpets? I compared the specs of 4 popular steam cleaners
I’ve been obsessed with finding a portable cleaner that actually extracts water instead of just making the carpet wet. I spent the afternoon digging through manuals and spec sheets to put together this comparison chart. Interestingly, the TikTok-famous Bissell isn't necessarily the strongest when you look at the kPa and wattage. If you’re like me and hate waiting 24 hours for a rug to dry, the suction power makes a massive difference. Hope this saves some of you the headache of deep-diving through manuals like I did! Let me know if you’ve tried any of these or if you think I missed a spec. submitted by /u/ChocholateBabe to r/CleaningTips [link] [comments]

Renting vs Buying a carpet cleaner, 3 dogs, 1 cat, and mostly carpeted house. What makes sense?
Hey everyone, looking for some advice. Our house is almost all carpet, and we have three dogs and a cat. Between muddy paws, occasional accidents, and everyday pet messes, our floors are constantly taking a beating I'm really torn between renting a pro-grade machine every few months.Buying a home carpet cleaner to keep on hand for regular cleanups.Renting is powerful but a hassle. Buying is convenient but will a home unit last with our pets? Which brand/model is truly durable? I know bissell and hoover are popular, and I see newer ones like tineco and uwant. Any others worth a look? For those with multiple pets or kids, what's worked best for you? How do I clean the dirty water tanks of my Bissell Turboclean Powerbrush Pet and my Bissell Little Green Machine?
I am so sorry to post these pictures with all the gunk inside, but I have no idea how to clean the base of my upright carpet cleaner or upholstery cleaner. There is no way to take these apart or to insert a brush to reach the crevices and only a few spots where I can pour water inside (for the upright carpet cleaner, I can pour water under the filter, and for both machines I can insert water where the tanks connect to the machine). What's the best carpet cleaner to buy?
Okay so I'm at my wit's end here. Just moved into a new place and the previous tenants apparently never heard of cleaning. The carpets are... let's just say they've seen better days. We're talking mystery stains, high traffic areas that look almost black, and a weird smell in the master bedroom that I don't even want to think about. Landlord said if I can get them clean I don't have to pay the pet deposit for my cat, so I'm motivated. I've been researching the best carpet cleaners for days and honestly the more I read, the more confused I get. Every single model has reviews saying it's either the best thing ever or absolute garbage that broke after two uses. The Bissell ProHeat seems popular but then people say the Hoover PowerScrub is better for the price. Then there's the SpotBot for smaller areas, the CrossWave for hard floors too, and don't even get me started on the commercial grade ones. My budget is around $200-300 but I could stretch to $400 if it's really worth it and will last. I need something that can handle serious deep cleaning, not just surface freshening. The apartment is about 900 sq ft with carpet in the bedrooms and living room. I've also got two area rugs that desperately need attention. Been looking at the Bissell ProHeat 2X Revolution, the Hoover SmartWash, and the Rug Doctor Mighty Pro X3, but open to other suggestions. Also wondering if I should just rent one from Home Depot for like $30 and call it a day? Though I feel like having my own would be good long-term since my cat occasionally has hairball incidents. submitted by /u/zzzyzzzyzzzyzzz to r/homeownerstips [link] [comments]

Best portable carpet cleaner
Hi everyone, I am looking for the best portable carpet cleaner, specifically one with the most suction. I have a Bissell pet pro currently, and while it does a decent job cleaning I spend hours just drying the floor of my apartment. I am a clean person, my pets don’t pee on the floor or anything nor do I wear shoes inside. I vacuum 4-5 times a week, but I just feel like the floors need an extra something. All I really care about is a cleaners ability to pick up the water it puts down, without spending 7 hours drying every inch of the apartment I am willing to spend a decent amount of money. If anyone has suggestions I would love to hear them! submitted by /u/OriginalOk29 to r/CarpetCleaning [link] [comments]

Is my carpet cleaner pulling up the carpet padding, or just disgusting? Help!
I just bought a carpet cleaner for my apartment carpets. We’re planning on staying for a while and my dog has a bladder issue.. so I couldn’t take the smell anymore. I noticed that those black clumps were showing up after my passes all over the carpet, and I’m worried that I am somehow damaging and pulling up the carpet padding. Given the grey/black color to the clumps and the water, it seems unlikely to be dirt. My main question is am I sucking up the matting and should I continue? I don’t particularly care about damaging the padding, but I don’t want to create more issues either. Maybe there are better ways to clean really cheap carpets than something like this? Given our apartments management I’m sure this carpet and padding is the cheapest possible. As a side note, I did vacuum before using the cleaner, but with my roomba. I’m sure that doesn’t have the greatest suction power, so maybe the carpets are just disgusting. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! submitted by /u/bris14 to r/CleaningTips [link] [comments]

Anyone have pets and a decent vacuum cleaner?
I want to ask for advice about a new vacuum cleaner. I'm not using the Vacuum Cleaner sub because I need Aussie availability (Perth). I hope this is ok. I want to buy one in the sales this week, preferably from Appliances Online, which price-matches. Anyone with info or experience in this? I have 2 old ones in terrible condition and not much $$ - cannot afford the Dysons and the Mieles. I've been looking at some Bissells - Bissell Powerforce Helix Turbo Upright Vacuum Cleaner 2110F ($169 - $208) and one I thought was even better but which has some not-so-great reviews, Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Turbo Upright Vacuum Cleaner 2454F ($355). My floors are some vinyl but mostly carpet with a mix of very low pile and medium shag. Importantly, I have 6 indoor cats and a dog that's mostly inside. The carpets are pretty bad now but I have a shampooer I can use if I get them vacuumed well. I like the clean emptying and the rotating heads on the two I mentioned but there are so many I haven't seen. Neither of them has HEPA filtration and I guess I won't be able to afford that, but with a double filter system they're both advertised as "removing allergens" which is a plus, as both mine leave the air smelling like old dust. I'm asking because I am running out of energy due to fatigue and this is such a huge purchase for me. I hope someone might steer me in the right direction?🤞🤞🤞 edit - had to get rid of the big ad. submitted by /u/Witchycurls to r/AskAnAustralian [link] [comments]
