"My spiritual/witchy Appalachian grandma didn't know what Brazil nuts were!"
I've been seeing an awful lot of people online (mainly tiktok) saying that their grandparents in Appalachia didn't know what Brazil nuts were, and thus they couldn't have ever called it the slur name. If you don't know what name I'm talking about, google it. It's heinous. It bothers me how many people infantilize Appalachians to a point of saying "they could do no wrong" Yes, there are/were racist Appalachians. There are/were racist people all over the United States. Saying that someones witchy grandma (and its always a grandma) didn't know what Brazil nuts were is just plain wrong. Sure, they probably didn't know what Brazil nuts were, because they knew them by the other name. Christianity has always been alive and well in Appalachia. Absolutely, they had old wives tales and spiritual practices, that doesn't mean they weren't knowledgeable on racism. I promise you, they were. Maybe we should stop acting like they were poor pitiful people and also acknowledge, they weren't dumb. They were more likely than not, racist. Edit to add: my grandparents were from east Tennessee and were coal miners. They taught my dad the bad name. Far from witchy as they were Baptist and Lutheran! submitted by /u/plushiesaremyjam to r/Appalachia [link] [comments]

I tested the 4 Brazil Nuts theory and it worked!
I tested the 4 Brazil Nuts theory and it worked! I’ve been trying to lower my cholesterol and for the past few months have tried to test different methods of cutting cholesterol. I introduced 4 Brazil Nuts on my 3rd try at it was the single most effective thing I’ve done. These are my stats over time, Legend: original > 1st Try > 2nd Try > 3rd Try Triglyceride: 2.3 > 1.1 > 0.8 > 1.6 HDL good cholesterol: 1.4 > 1.4 > 1.5 > 1.2 LDL bad cholesterol: 3.8 > 4.7 > 4.6 > 4.1 Total cholesterol: 6.2 > 6.6 > 6.5 > 6.0 Chol to HDL ratio: 4.4 > 4.7 > 4.3 > 5.0 Here are my methods per try: Original: I didn’t exercise at all and regularly ate fried food and no vegetables. I do not have diabetes and I also am not overweight. 1st try: I ate the same as I always did BUT I started running 3 times a week. (My triglycerides plummeted and my LDL skyrocketed) 2nd try: I cut all fried food, I didn’t eat vegetables and I continued to run 2 times a week + weightlifting 1 time a week. And I ate soaked chia seeds EVERYDAY. (I put in alot of effort this try but it only caused my cholesterol to drop by 0.1! It was so demoralising) (also: I started on a very low dose of Accutane but it’s supposed to increase TG and LDL, so I was aware that it may have skewed results to be worse than it is) 3rd try: i was still on v low dose Accutane. I ate vegetables but also introduced SOME fried food back to my diet and I exercised only 1-2 times per week. This try I put in less effort as I was battling a serious flu and the time period was very short. Only 3 weeks from the previous try. The only significant thing I did was eat slightly more vegetables and I ate 4 Brazil nuts the day before my test. (My triglycerides rose, HDL dropped but my LDL and total cholesterol plummeted!) Notes: I have never eaten Brazil nuts before this and was cautious selenium poisoning. I monitored myself to ensure I didn’t feel nauseous and ate each nut progressively throughout the day. CAUTION to those reading: be careful! do not eat more than 1-2 Brazil nuts a day as you can get selenium poisoning. I wanted to test the 4 Brazil nuts study as I was skeptical but I am no longer a non believer! submitted by /u/MATEPLAY to r/Cholesterol [link] [comments]

Brazil Nuts: Word of Caution
Careful with overconsumption of brazil nuts. I got a bag of organic brazil nuts from Costco and have been eating 3 a day or so every AM. I took a diagnostics test and noticed my barium was pretty out of range. I was shocked until I googled culprits with high barium—my selenium was fine, though, hence the reason for consumption in the first place. Anyways, down to 1-2 a day now, might even go to 0-1 and supplement selenium via Thorne Trace Minerals instead. Just a friendly FYI! submitted by /u/Hamsterlover87 to r/Supplements [link] [comments]

Brazil Nut Overdose
Any Brazil Nut experts here? I got Brazil nuts at the store today just to try, and I think I ate about 4 or 5 of them. I had remembered hearing in the past that Brazil nuts can cause problems when eaten to excess, but I figured that was over the course of many weeks or months. Anyway, I looked it up out of curiosity and found that the toxicity level for selenium is 400mcg. Supposedly six nuts deliver ~550mcg, so that would put me over the toxicity level. So anyway, am I going to die? I mean, I'm pretty sure these things wouldn't be sold at the grocery store if they were truly that dangerous, but you never know...¯_(ツ)_/¯ submitted by /u/apricottage to r/nutrition [link] [comments]
