Carhartt Pants For Men Slim

Hey everyone, I'm sure this sub gets littered with these requests, but I've been struggling for a while to understand why I can't seem to find boots that fit, and after hours of searching reddit, youtube videos, and going to try on boots a few times, I'm still at a loss. I currently have the Ariat Sport Outdoor boots in an 11D. Even after adding a different insole the things are still just loose. I get a lot of heel slip, and can easily slide my foot forward and back. I like the look of the boots overall, very clean and "basic", nothing fancy. They are 11" shaft, but the shaft is very wide. I took a tape to it and it's 7" across, and so most pants you can sort of see the outline. I measured myself on a brannock device at Boot Barn and it appears my size is an 11.5. I didn't do a great job measuring width because their brannock was not a brand name one and didn't pay close enough attention, but I took a tape measure at home and appears my foot is about 4 3/8" wide, which puts me in an 11.5 D as a true size. I've got a high arch, and my foot (like the rest of my body) is slim. I tried on a bunch of different boots and brands at Boot Barn yesterday, and I'm just struggling to understand how the sizes can vary so much. There doesn't seem to be any consistency across style or even brand. I like my current Ariats, but trying on other ariats and I'll see that it's either too narrow, too short, or too large everywhere. I live in the north east, and while western boots are pretty popular it's not anywhere near as popular as out west and maybe not shockingly, there are less boot stores then when I was growing up in Cali. So my options "locally" are Bass Pro, Boot Barn, and maybe a small selection at a random store here or there. I'm at a loss here. I feel like there is no way I can order online because even across brands there is so much inconsistency from boot to boot, and locally there doesn't appear to be a great option. If I measure at an 11.5 E, should I be going for a 12 D? an 11 EE? I'm lost cuz my current 11 D is too big in the vamp, but I have a high arch, so it makes no sense. I'm just looking for a basic brown leather boot. Something that won't obviously show through my jeans/carhartt pants, and isn't super loose. Partially I'm just venting because I don't understand. Hey y'all! I posted a couple of days ago asking for suggestions for work pants that would comfortably fit my large thighs. I wanted to pay the help forward by sharing what I got and how they fit, so hopefully it's a tad easier for thunderously thighed ladies in the future to decide what to get. For reference, I'm 5'4", 150lbs (ish, my scale is dead), 32.5" waist, 40.5" hips. I decided to only get pants I could try on in person, so for me that meant Duluth and Carhartt. Pair 1: Duluth Women's VintageFlex Fire Hose Hi-Rise Slim Leg Pants (size 16 short) I love how these fit in the thighs and hips, but as expected they're too big in the waist. They fit perfectly with a belt, though! I was kinda on the fence about these at first and even thought about returning them, but after wearing them for a bit I love them. They stretch surprisingly well. front view, no belt side view, no belt front view, belt squatting (they stretched shockingly well! very comfy to squat in) side view, belt (meant for this one to be earlier but whatever) Pair 2: Carhartt Men's Relaxed Fit Straight Jeans (size 34x30) These are a bit snug in the hips, and I wish they were higher waisted, but they fit surprisingly great in the waist! Building A Masculine-Leaning Wardrobe, With Considerations for Body Type Or, the Basic Bastard, but for Butch/Stud/Masc Lesbians who can't just go wear men's clothes. Alternate, more-detailed, google doc link. How to use this guide: This is intended to be a tool to help folks who are rethinking their fashion to be more masculine, who want some product recommendations, and folks who are frustrated with how their body shape, size, etc. doesn't let them dress how they want to dress. It is not meant to be the masc fashion bible, nor is it meant to represent anything but the opinion of two people who want to help folks potentially feel better about the clothes they’re trying on in stores and maybe find some clothes that work for them. It is, however, meant to help people branch out and away from jeans, a hoodie, and a t-shirt. The idea behind this guide is to help people find and build a starter wardrobe that they can then expand on. We want to get you enough masculine clothes that you can go out on a nice date, through a job interview, go out with friends, and look presentable at work and/or school for a few days without laundry. The basic wardrobe consists of the following: A pair of slacks A pair of jeans A short and long-sleeve button-up shirt A handful of t-shirts that fit you well A flannel (note that I say a singular flannel) A denim/chambray shirt A pair of shorts A handful of tank tops (or vests) that work for you A Jean Jacket and Chore Coat, with some recommendations around 1) leather, 2) raincoats, and 3) parkas. This approach draws heavily on The Vivienne Files Starting From Scratch series on constructing a capsule wardrobe, which is well worth the read, even if it is far more of a femme fashion approach. The general principles are the same no matter what kind of clothes you’re shopping for or general vibe for fashion you’re rolling with. Some Tools To Help You Succeed in Fashion: Measuring Tape - Knowing your measurements is essential to finding clothes that fit when ordering online and translating between men's and women's clothing. Get someone to help you measure. Always check the size guide. Boob Tape to ensure button-downs stay closed and look uniform - I'm a B/C cup, and my girlfriend is a DDD; we both recommend Hollywood Secrets, which is available at most US-based drug, shoe, and beauty stores. This shit should be your best friend. Do you ever wonder how folks avoid boob gap? This is how. Well, this and a good sports bra. Ideas and Principles to Adopt: READ: Always read fit reviews on websites offering clothing, and be honest about your weight and height with yourself as you read them to see how you would fit these clothes. Also, review clothing that you like! Don't be afraid to add your weight and height to help others as well. Say you’re masc or butch! Help a friend in need. Know your body shape and seek out fashion influencers, advice, etc., that match your body type. For example, if you're curvy, don't follow and look for fashion advice from petite, curve-less, skinny people. That will discourage you and make you want to throw in the towel before you even get into fashion. I'd also argue that's a form of self-harm and, if my girlfriend's experiences are anything to go off of, will turn you off of trying to pay attention to fashion entirely and only gravitate toward "safe things" like hoodies and t-shirts and jeans. Don't be afraid to tailor your clothes, or to learn how to tailor your clothes. Don't be afraid to wear a bra or binder that changes how your breasts lay on your chest - or no bra at all. You can wear a sports bra or binder (if that's your jam) or a more shaped bra depending on what your support needs are and what you want out of the shape of the shirt. It is okay!!!! to have tits and wear a men's shirt, it's all about having the right bra or binder, and probably some boob tape too. Sometimes you have to spend money to get clothes that fit you well - An issue I keep encountering when I read lesbian fashion advice pretty much anywhere is that there are two price points, one is as cheap as humanly possible, and the other assumes a level of disposable income that a lot of people just don’t have. The thing is, sometimes money must be spent to either get clothes that work or help clothes to fit you better. Paying the extra money for the queer brand, or to take that pair of pants that looks so fucking good on you to the tailor is a good thing. There is no shame in spending money to look good. Get comfortable with with saving up for good quality pieces, or for looking at second-hand options. Step 1: Colors According to the Vivienne Files, a good capsule wardrobe has two core colors (e.g., black and brown), and three accent colors (e.g., red, white, and blue). This is not a how to build a capsule wardrobe post, but the general principles are the same. You probably have one or two colors you like on yourself, one of them is probably black. Figure out what the other colors are! My (very white/warm autumn) colors are baby pink, navy blue, cranberry red, gray, and black with some brown and tan accents. My girlfriend's (Native Hawaiian/Italian/cool winter) colors are mustard yellow, olive green, sunset orange, black, and grey with some brown, cranberry red/maroon (she wears so much do this), and navy blue accents. Your colors are your own! Figure out what makes you look good, and make sure to note them down for looking at clothes. Don't buy clothes in colors you look bad in! Step 2: Sizing & Getting Comfortable So here's the kicker: men's clothing doesn't work on everyone's bodies. Women's bodies are, unfortunately, built differently than men's, particularly if you have curves. If this is rough for you or causes you dysphoria, I'm sorry, it sucks. This is a post with some strategies to shop for clothes in the dreaded women's section if that's what you need to do in a way that suits your personal presentation choices (e.g., how to find or make clothing made 'for women' work for your body). Below are some key pointers that are useful for getting started. Firstly, measure yourself! Here are useful measurements for shopping for clothes. In all cases, don't pull the measuring tape tight to ensure accuracy. Otherwise, you'll feel very uncomfortable in the clothes you try on. Shoulder to Shoulder (esp. important if you have broad shoulders.) Bicep circumstance (measure around the widest part of your bicep while flexing) Many women's clothes have small armholes. Knowing this measurement helps to avoid looking like an overly jacked dude in a too-small shirt, ripping seams when you put on a shirt, or wearing shirts that are so tight that you can't bend your arm. This is a good measure of if you need to size up in a shirt because the rest of the measurements can be tailored. Bust (measure across your nipples) Underbust (measure around your ribcage under your breasts) Waist (measure from the narrowest part of your waist -- probably right around your belly button) Hips (measure from the widest part of your hips) Butt (Around the widest part of your ass) Inseam (measure from your ankle up into your crotch) Find clothes that fit your measurements - not clothes you instantly like or safely gravitate towards, but clothes that fit your measurements broadly and diversely - at a department store or a place like Target, Macy's, TJ Maxx, M&S, Primark, etc. that has a wide variety of inexpensive clothing, and try them on, drawing from both the men's and women's sections of the store. This is how you start to figure out what works for your body type and why you have to try things on broadly rather than just what feels "safe.'' Try on the following in a few different styles: Slacks, Jeans, Work Pants, Shorts When selecting clothes to try on, attempt to locate pieces that seem more gender-neutral to you in the women's section, such as straight-legged or boot-cut jeans or slacks (especially if you're curvy). In the men's section, look for athletic cut pants if you have any kind of curve, as these have more flex built into them to accommodate lifting butt on guys. NOTE ON PANT SIZING: Some clothing companies - especially those catering to a broader audience - use your waist size (e.g., 28-inch, 34-inch) as the size of the garment in question. Other companies use different sizing scales (such as a 10, 14, or 18). KNOWING YOUR MEASUREMENTS WILL HELP YOU TO USE THE SIZE GUIDE STORES PROVIDE TO TRANSLATE BETWEEN THE TWO. Button Up Shirts (note: a button down shirt is a shirt that has buttons to secure the collar down, which is why most shirts you'll see are button up, not down shirts). In the men's section, try on both a slim and a regular cut. Slim will be a tighter fit, particularly if you have curves, regular fit may look boxy on you in the wrong bra. In the women's section, try and find blouses that look more masculine -- this will be found by leaving the 'young person' section and going into the professional women's workwear section of the store. Some of these shirts may have darts, some may be cut baggier than others. Try both. Try and grab at least one fun young man Hawaiian shirt, as those are a fixture of masc wardrobes. T-shirts/Tanks (or vests) Grab some men's v-necks (higher neck) and some women's v-necks (deeper neck, less prone to giving boob shelf if the girls are big); Men and women's crew neck t-shirts, as well as thicker strapped men's and women's tank tops -- these should fit more loosely in a men's fit, or more form fitting in a women's fit. Sweaters/Crewnecks Usually unisex sizing -- so just grab one you like. My general advice for the trying on clothes part of this is to potentially also try on two different kinds of bras. If you've got bigger breasts, you probably want a more structured and supportive bra. This could potentially be the one you wear into the store, if you've got a fave, or this could be one you try on. Also, grab a bralette/unsupportive bra and a good sports bra with medium to high support. When looking at shirts try each with each bra. When trying on pants or shorts, drop a big squat and check if you have duck butt. Step 3: Black Slacks Think of this as an investment. The first thing you'll want is to be able to build outfits that you can dress up or down. This starts with a solid pair of slacks or trousers in a #suiting color. In terms of fit, I would suggest that you avoid having these be super baggy or super slim fitting. Slim or Skinny fitting will make the outfit look feminine (in terms of slacks) and baggy tends to make people look like their clothes are swallowing them. Neither of these looks is good for a wardrobe staple. Some advice from r/butchlesbians: Hem or cuff all pants so there is no excess fabric bunching at the ankle – this makes you look shorter. It is worth it to get nicer slacks hemmed for this reason alone. Keywords to look for: Trousers, Slacks, (and for a slightly more casual look, chinos) Avoid: Cargo pockets, drawstrings, no belt loops, pocket stitching on the pant leg, or double knees. Slacks cut like Wildfang's Empower Trouser, H&M's basic Slacks, Old Navy's Built-in Flex Slim Rotation Chinos or High-Waisted OGC Chino Pants, Both&'s Marlo, Daper Boi’s Slim Fit Chino Pants or Everlane's Utility Barrel Pant or Stretch Twill 5 Pocket Pant have a nice silhouette that can be made casual or dressed up should the occasion call for it. Note: If you look at the reviews and see pictures of either models or owners of the pant style in question and you don't like how it looks on a body type similar to yours, don't order them as returning clothes can be a pain in the ass with time limits and other challenges. However, if you're in a store and can try them on, give them a shot! You might be surprised! Brand Recommendations: $20-40 USD: Target, H&M, Old Navy, Uniqlo $41-80 USD: Gap, Uniqlo, Androgynous Fox $81-120 USD: Everlane, Wildfang, Both&, Dapper Boi $120+ USD: Peau De Loup, Haute Butch, Kirrin Finch Caveat: As I'm sure you've noticed, to buy clothes designed for queer people by other queer people, you have to spend more money. I wish this wasn't the case, as these companies price out most queer folks with how much their clothing costs. However, as these trousers are an investment, it's worth spending more for them and supporting a queer brand if you have the funds to do so. Also, many of these are available on resale sites like Poshmark or Facebook Marketplace. If you know your size, you can easily get pants from Wildfang and other queer-catering brands for far less money (e.g., I paid $35 for my Wildfang empower trousers on Poshmark). Step 4: Button-Down Shirts Button-downs are the staple of any masculine wardrobe -- you're going to end up owning about ten of them. The unfortunate thing about button-downs, though, is that they're a pain in the ass to figure out, fit-wise. Men's shirts tend to fit women with larger breasts or wider hips poorly because (the vast majority of) men don't have large breasts or hips. So when shopping for a button-up, try to take this into account and don’t let not fitting into a men’s shirt ruin your day. There are options! A good button-up should fit your shoulders without there being a ton of space to move around (i.e., you should be able to raise your arms, but you should not be able to grab handfuls of fabric on each shoulder and pull. It also should fit your neck. Men tend to have wider necks than women, which means their shirts are built to accommodate this fact. Gaping collars make shirts look oversized and, therefore, visually look like they fit you poorly, even if they fit the rest of your body well. When shopping for button-ups, try to avoid gaping collars. A good button-up shirt is also one you can comfortably button the whole way down. This includes the last button. A big problem I see with many masc or butch lesbians is that they’re wearing shirts that don’t fit their hips, while they do fit their shoulders, chest, and neck. A solution for this is tucking your shirt in, yes, but sometimes you don’t want to do that, and having a shirt that can be versatile with both a tucked-in and tucked-out look is essential for this wardrobe staple. The good news is that many button-down options are available for women’s bodies that don’t have darts or a feminine cut. However, sometimes, if you’ve got hips, you need a feminine cut that has more space through the hips. Companies like Androgynous Fox, Wildfang, Bridge & Burn, Dapper Boi, Peau De Loup, and Kirrin Finch have all taken this into account in designing shirts that fit women’s bodies. But there are cheaper options as well. Target’s men's section is where I’d start. If you can make a Goodfellow and Co button-down shirt work for you, you’re golden. Try on a few of them. This said, if for whatever reason, a men’s button down doesn’t work for you – take a look at Androgynous Fox's The Mickey, Urban Outfitter’s Cooper Solid Button Down, H&M’s Muscle Fit Cotton Shirt (more space in the chest for breasts) or Wildfang’s The Essential Oxford Button Up. If you have money to burn, Kirrin Finch’s Frankie is cartoonishly expensive but quite worth the price. Everlane’s Relaxed Oxford Shirt is also quite pricey but goes on sale often. In terms of plus size recommendations, Wildfang, Androgynous Fox, and Kirrin Finch all accommodate a wide variety of body types. I’ve also found that Morning Witch's Button Down Shirts (Deathly Bouquet) go up to 4XL. Maurice's Plus Size 90s Prep Relaxed Button Up Shirt and Old Navy’s Linen Blend Button Down Boyfriend Shirt go up to 4X. What’s important to note here is that these sizes are built to accommodate how women’s bodies grow in size rather than how men’s bodies do – these are shirts that provide a boyish, masculine look while also being designed with bodies like yours in mind. Styling Tips: A short-sleeve collared shirt is easier to wear underneath a sweater, crew-neck sweatshirt, or open in the front. A long-sleeve collared shirt is easier to wear buttoned up and tucked in—it also looks more professional. This master post is essential when reflecting on fit, style, color, etc. It’s also written by fashionable, and nerdy-about-fashion, guys, and has some good product recommendations. A good pair of jeans can look professional (if they are in a cut that looks professional [i.e., not excessively baggy]) or casual, depending on how they are styled. What we want from these jeans is a silhouette that isn’t too form-fitting - but also doesn’t look like it is oversized. Currently, fashion for young people is shifting away from more form-fitting cuts of jeans into baggy styles of jeans – which is fine if that floats your boat. Still, for a pair of jeans that you are turning into a masculine wardrobe staple, I recommend sticking to the more classic cuts: Boot, Straight Leg, Slim, Athletic Slim, or Skinny. I am including skinny here because sometimes, particularly if you are bottom-heavy, skinny jeans can be very slimming, while baggy jeans only work on particular body types (such as those who are skinny, slim, apple-shaped) and tend to feminize bodies that aren’t that type. Vintage Levis are a staple of hipster men’s fashion these days (writing in summer 2024) because they sit at men’s natural waists, which makes them better than a lot of current cuts of men’s jeans to fit a body with hips or an ass. If you’re short and have curves, particularly in the hip, try bootcut jeans. Levi’s makes great vintage-style bootcut women’s jeans (my girlfriend’s go-to) as well as the 315s, which are shaping in a similar look. For a more classically masculine look in women’s jeans, you can also try the higher-waisted 80s Mom Jeans which are tapered, or the straight-fit, mid-rise wedgie that is a favorite recommendation of dyke fashion bloggers. r/mensfashionadvice also suggests the following if you can make men’s pants work for you: Levis 510 (skinny), 511 (slim), 512 (slim taper), 513 (slim straight), 514 (looser slim straight). Bullet point from curvy girlfriend: Don’t be afraid to mid or high-waist it. Levi’s Wedgie only goes up to a 34-inch waist – HOWEVER, I wear a 32, have a 36-inch natural waist and a 47-inch around the widest part of my butt [and a 27-inch inseam] – so I’d encourage you to try them on if you are even remotely close to these measurements. My go-to pair of jeans is the Goodfellow athletic cut jeans from Target (linked in a lighter wash). Additionally, Old Navy’s OG Slim-Straight High/Mid-Waisted Jean (also in curvy) is sized for women (on a 00-30 scale as opposed to 24-50-inch waist scale). Bear your measurements in mind when looking at their stuff. My girlfriend has had good luck with Lee jeans (which are sold at Wal-Mart) and jeans from Express. I have enjoyed my jeans from Nordstrom x Wildfang’s collaboration and my skinny jeans from the Gap. The thing with jeans is that you probably already have a pair or three that you like. What I’d focus on is for more dressy jeans, go for a darker wash with no rips or tears, but for casual jeans, whatever works, works. Cut and Style There are three necklines and one style that I think are particularly useful for wardrobe building: Crew neck (think your traditional collar on a sweatshirt or sweater that doesn't have a hood) This is your basic ‘unisex’ t-shirt A crew neck with jeans or slacks looks effortlessly classy or casual, depending on how it is styled. V-Neck (shaped like a v, obviously) In women’s clothing, v-necks tend to be a bit deeper A v-neck t-shirt under a button-up or flannel allows you to comfortably button up the shirt to the neck without having too many layers of fabric in the way. Henley (buttons at the neck) In women’s clothing, henleys tend to cut lower with more of a boat or scoop-cut neckline before the buttons start. A henley can be worn with anything but looks great underneath a chunky sweater – the kind you find at Goodwill and are like score. Baseball Style Tees (Typically with full sleeves or 3/4 length sleeves - though they do come in short sleeves too) Characterized by having sleeves of a different color than the rest of the shirt and the triangular cut of the sleeves going into the neckline of the shirt is good for people with broad shoulders. Baseball tees make everyone look masculine - they’re practically designed this way. I think they’re a positive staple in anyone’s wardrobe if you’re trying to create a masculine vibe. So try some t-shirts from both the women’s and men’s sections in a place like Target or a department store. Try the athletic and boxy fits and maybe some of the shirts with deeper v-necks, too. I work a labor job, needed to buy some new work pants as mine were literally falling apart. Went to Target, bought some pants, one from womens section, one out of the guys section, first time wearing the mens ones today after wearing the womens ones all week. (Both are work jeans). Holy crap these pockets are deep! Even though the women’s pair I bought were like a utility style, I think it was for fashion only—like the kids that dress in all Carhartt wear but don’t work that kind of job (no judgement or offense meant—just acknowledging a trend demand that companies are responding to and making knock-offs of). But really, I can keep my whole life-on-the-go in there. Why are we not worth the same allowance of fabric? These aren’t even loose cut, they’re mens skinny (or at least slim cut) jeans—so tight fit can’t be it. Is it really detrimental to our silhouette to make it big enough you can keep an iPhone in there? I know this might seem like kind of a silly topic compared to what else gets posted here but it actually genuinely pisses me off. Women make up many of these kinds of jobs ( that’s a whole other issue to unpack though), why don’t they account for that or take our needs seriously? We have usually more stuff to carry around anyway especially if you menstruate, take medication, wear makeup. And depending on the safety of where you are or where you live, a bag or purse can be easier to rob on the street or covertly like off a cubby or shelf at work for example. I am 6' 6'' 190 lbs, so shopping is not easy. I know some of you have it worse. But for anyone my height and under, I have compiled the ultimate list of tall clothing manufacturers (for men). This is probably over 20 hours worth of scouring the internet, and I wanted to share with you guys so you have access to my research. Most of the clothes on the list are long sleeve shirts/outerwear and pants, because generally even us tall guys can easily find shorts and shirts that fit. Without further ado, here is my ultimate list. If I missed any that you guys know of, leave it down in the comments and Ill add it. (before reading this, remember that whenever I discuss sleeve length I am talking about size large) Redwood tall outfitters - t shirts, long sleeve t shirts, and henleys Bonobos - great chinos in 36'' inseam, but also a good selection of shirts with longer cuts, and outwear with good sleeve length Taylor Stitch - hands down THE BEST chinos I have are from Taylor stitch. The slim chino fits my frame perfectly, and looks amazing with a pair of GYW boots. Their shirt sleeves are a little short at 35.5 inches, but I can get away with their outerwear as most of it is 36''+ American Tall - These guys make pretty decent clothes but generally not as stylish as I would like. I mostly buy their joggers as these look good and aren't through the roof expensive. Eddie Bauer - Love the flannels from here. You can find them on sale often and I find that the large tall sleeve length is longer even than I need. They also make great parkas in tall sizes, as well as hoodies and other fleece stuff. I go to school in western mass and I wore one of their parkas nearly every day this winter, some days up to -20 with the wind chill. Definitely one of my favorite garments LL Bean - similar to eddie bauer as an outdoorsy brand. Lots of flannels and shirt jackets, etc. Classic maine style. They also have the only waxed jacket I have found in a tall size. Mission Workshop - No dedicated tall sizes here, but the sleeve length on their garments is mostly 36''+ so should fit most tall guys. Very stylish, but also very expensive. They also make great bags Flint and Tinder - This is an in house brand from huckberry. Again, no tall sizes, but they make shirts and jackets and flannels that all have 36''+ sleeve length. Just check the garment sizing tab on huckberry before buying to make sure the sleeves are long enough for you. Proof - Another in house brand from Huckberry. No dedicated tall sizes, but their stuff is cut pretty long. I recently purchased their Highland Rover jacket which comes with a 36 1/4'' sleeve in large and fits me absolutely perfectly. Banana republic - All of gaps umbrella brands have tall sizes. You get what you pay for here, I have a shirt from Banana republic which fits fairly well in large tall, but again not the best quality. Filson - Makes great shirt jackets and work shirts, very rugged outerwear as well. A good selection of garments with tall sizes ( the call it extra long). Expensive, but worth it. Just read their reviews. J crew - not much to be said here. They have tall sizes. Legendary White Tails - Another brand similar to LL Bean and Eddie Bauer. I don't have anything from them in my closet yet but have been eyeing the hooded flannels in large tall. Carbon2Cobalt - small brand I found which has some tall size shirts and hoodies / jackets. Very beachy vibes. Not overly expensive either. johnson Woolen Mills - The name is self explanatory; these guys make rugged wool clothing in tall sizes. charles Tyrwhitt - These guys have chinos in a 38'' unfinished length for you NBA centers out there. Orvis - Another outdoor outfitter similar to filson. They have some tall size shirts and jackets. They also make very expensive beds for your dog, if you spoil your pooch. American Eagle - Tall sizes in most of their catalog. You get what you pay for here. Pants don't fit that great, and the shirts I have from them aren't really worn a lot. cheap though. Carhartt -Everyone knows this. They have some hoodies in tall sizes, and also have 36'' dungarees. I have a pair for shovelling days and they are great. Lands End - Similar to LL Bean but slightly lower quality. Good selection of tall sizes. Kuhl - Has some pants in 32x36 sizes, mostly hiking/outdoor stuff. Nudie Jeans - Expensive but high quality pants in 36 inch inseams Proper Cloth - Not specific tall sizes, but customizable tailored garments-- you can really dial in your fit here, and their chinos are suprisingly cheap for a custom made piece of clothing Mavi Jeans - 36'' inseam jeans Pendleton - These guys make great wool flannels in tall sizes. Stock kind of sucks though Hugh and Crye - this brand is kind of dying but they have a wide variety of tall fits in shirts Duluth Trading company - another outdoor brand like LL Bean. Pretty affordable with a wide selection of tall size clothes g star raw - these guys make pants in up to 38'' inseam. Pretty pricey but they are always running pretty good sales that you can find stuff on Boden - These guys have 36'' chinos Lululemon - Joggers in 37'' inseam. Pricey. But you already knew that 2tall.com - These guys have super tall size shirts and pants. Their shirts are too long in the sleeves for me even in the smallest size. the Territory ahead - these guys also make clothes in tall sizes with a similar vibe to Carbon2Cobalt Relwen - No dedicated tall sizes here, but this american hunting inspired outerwear brand has very long sleeves. 37''+ inches on some of their stuff Brave star selvedge - Affordable selvedge denim. Probably the only place I have seen 30 x 36 jeans 3sixteen - another selvedge denim brand, although not as affordable as Brave Star. We find ourselves living in a new normal, permanently working from home. This domestic setting means any kind of formal dressing feels stiff. Equally, I don’t want to wear sweatpants at all times (the delivery man is getting suspicious). Enter the relaxed trouser. I tried out 13 different pairs of relaxed slacks over a number of weeks. The Gramicci Gramicci Pants came out on top with their comfortable fit, versatile styling, extensive colourways and functional details. I also like the premium feeling and cosy Albam Ripstop Drawstring Trouser, and the great value of the Community Clothing Men’s Cotton Chino. Best overall Gramicci G Pant A versatile, comfortable, and affordable pair of trousers with a diamond gusseted crotch, and built in nylon belt. Its understated look and traditional cotton twill fabric belies is outdoor Japanese lineage. $90 Gramicci was a brand started in the early ​’80s by a young climber named Mike Graham — the name was an Italian spin on his surname. Their early products were a pair of shorts and pants with some unique features, notably a diamond shaped crotch gusset to allow for movement, and a built in nylon belt for tightening or loosening the waist. It was a brilliant and widely copied innovation, and most outdoors companies have had a stab at it, but the Gramicci G‑Pant is the original and it remains a great pant. Like any great piece of work or sportswear, the G‑Pant has the edge of being designed for function and feels both solidly built and extremely comfortable. It also comes in a dizzying array of colours and variants due to its rebirth as a Japanese based clothing brand rather than the more functional and anti-fashion approach of a traditional outdoors brand. The pricing is reasonable at £75 pounds a pair and it’s widely available in a huge range of colours and fabrics. What I love most about it is its flexibility. The fabric is a fairly traditional twill so you can wear it like you would a smart pair of chinos but the nylon belted waist is and gusset crotch means it has the utility and comfort of a pair of sweats, and the minimal technical details means it’s just as good paired with a contemporary trainer and oversized sweatshirt. In fact, I wish I’d known about these when I was a 16 year old skater as I would gone crazy over the tapered/​relaxed fit and comfortable, worn in fabric. It beats the hell out of the insanely stiff Dickies or Carhartts that we were wearing. Downsides My only issues in terms of the product itself was sizing. Presumably because they serve primarily the Japanese market, the G‑Pants come up small and I would definitely size up if you’re in between sizes. In transparency terms I could also find nothing to help me figure out the brands environmental or production credentials. This isn’t uncommon for a Japanese brand unfortunately, but it would be nice to see some basic information for customers attempting to make an ethics driven purchase. Also good Albam Ripstop Drawstring Trouser A premium feeling and supremely comfortable pair of pants available in some beautiful colourways. A visible drawstring detracts from an otherwise great garment. $99 The Albam Ripstop Drawstring Trouser has a fantastic loose, tapered fit with a premium feeling washed ripstop fabric (the sort of gridded fabric used for some military garments). With a small crop and and easy waist, I felt like I was wearing a pair of pyjamas. It was also on the more affordable end of the premium market at just under £100. That extra money buys you a notably better finish than the top pick, the Gramicci Pant and European production. The deep indigo blue, forest green and pastel shade colourways are also genuinely unique. The big downside for me was the visible drawstring in a contrasting ecru, which gave the trousers a slightly crunchy/​hippieish look that was at odds with the finish and shape. I think they were going for 70s sportswear. I can’t help but wish they’d gone for a more technical drawstring or kept it internal for a cleaner finish. The latest versions of the style by the brand have done exactly this and I look forward to trying them out, especially in the wool fabrics of their AW20 collection. Budget pick Community Clothing Men's Cotton Chino A shockingly good price nets a very high quality and sharp looking pair of trousers. Made in UK heritage mill Brisbane Moss but the nature of Community Clothing means availability can be an issue. £59 This is a great trouser, at an incredible price. £59 gets you a product made in the UK, in a quality British cotton drill, from heritage UK mill Brisbane Moss. It feels like something you could easily sell for twice the price. The fit is fantastic, with deep, flattering pleats, a loose shape, and a gentle taper from the knee. What I love is the versatility of it. If your style leans classic, it would look great with a shirt tucked in or a piece of lightweight knitwear and some leather boots or derbies. If you’re more contemporary or streetwear orientated, with the cuff rolled up and pair of vans or converse and an oversized t‑shirt, you’ve got the perfect pair of kick around trousers. They also don’t have a drawstring so they are probably the easiest to smarten up of our top picks. The downside? Well, basically they are hard to get. The brand produces them in 3 colour-ways (olive green, navy and a light tan which we tested) but they only make them when there is downtime in their factory — the brand is part of an initiative by designer Patrick Grant to keep factories operating between fashion collections. This and disruption from the coronavirus pandemic means that they’ve only been available in a very limited run of colours since the beginning of our review period, several months ago. Representatives of Community Clothing say that the sizes will be restocked soon. Basically, if you can get ahold of them, these are great value for money and were a strong contender for our top pick. What to look for Availability: We wanted to make sure that I could find something that would be available year round. Range of colours: We wanted a trouser that was available in a decent range of neutral colours, in order to work as a wardrobe staple. Fabric: For our relaxed trouser, fabric was key. How it held up to being worn around the house and how it felt sitting long hours at a desk was essential. This meant primarily cotton in hardwearing qualities like twill and drill. These had to be easy to wear, clean and ideally get better with age. Fit: Relaxed essentially, but what does that mean? Well in practice we tried everything from cropped and tapered high waisted trousers to pleated, drawstring and hybrids of both in our hunt for the most comfortable WFH fit. The fits would mostly be somewhere between straight and an easy taper. Versatility: We wanted a trouser that could do smart in a pinch but didn’t seem stiff when paired with a sweatshirt or a hoody. Easy Care: The best pair of relaxed trousers had to be ones we were comfortable getting dirty in, whether cooking, putting out the trash or doing basic DIY, we didn’t want them to feel precious. Price: We figured that to be a staple you had to be able to afford multiple pairs. The price should probably sit somewhere between £50-£150 max. The competition The Studio Nicholson Bill Pant is a premium take on a straight leg work pant, and at £220 topped out our selection of trousers. You could feel the quality in the fabric, finish and moleskin-like brushed fabric, but the high waist tends to dig in a little if you sit in them for a long stretch and the fabric is a bit on the fussy side for an everyday trouser. I was excited by the Garbstore Work Easy Pant. The brands AW20 collection has some ace looking fabrics and this drawstring work pant in a Japanese cordura fabric looked really interesting. The finishing and quality of the trouser were good but I’m not sure they justified the price tag and fit-wise they came up surprisingly tight/slim for this kind of style. Expensive for what it is. The Oliver Spencer Judo Pant is a mainstay of the brand. They are well made in a brushed organic cotton, and manufactured ethically in Portugal. They almost made it as a top pick and I was really torn over including it alongside the Albam pant. But with a more tailored appearance and high waist it felt a bit too neat for this category and £50 more expensive than the Albam style. The Oliver Spencer Workers Trouser are similarly well made as their Judo Pant brothers, but were a bit of a disappointment. In the words of my wife “it isn’t sure what it wants to be” and I think that’s about right. It has a military style cargo pocket, loose straight leg and drawstring waist which are in theory great but feel like a lot going on when you are wearing them. The Universal Works Baker Pant is a long running style by the brand and I was really happy with them. A smart drill fabric, high waist and loose curved hem meant that they felt much more like a tailored trouser than a casual chino. That said they are great quality for the price and a good option if your looking for a smarter relaxed trouser. The Entireworld Cotton Pleated Trouser (Type B, Version 2) was a disappointment from a brand I really love in theory. The fit was surprisingly slim for pleated pants, and I’m not sure the welted pockets on the front or flaps on the back pockets really worked with this kind of style. I was fan of the almost oxford style Japanese fabric that the trouser was made of but on the whole it felt like a timid take on a pleated trouser. If you’re still in slim styles and are looking to branch out this might be a gateway style for you but I can’t help but wish they’d been a bit more daring with it. The Stan Ray OG Painter Pant is exactly that, a faithful take on the US workwear style, done in a coarse off-white raw cotton material and made to last with triple stitched seams. It felt authentic, stiff and not particularly comfortable. I really like how it draped through the leg. I would 100% size up on this style and it took time to break in. Cool but at £80 feels steep for such a basic utility garment. Filippa K’s Toby Trouser is their minimal Scandinavian take on the relaxed trouser and I really really liked it. It was made of a nice mid-weight twill in a wolf grey colourway. The neat flat front with a fly is a nice touch on a drawstring trouser and it felt like a versatile item. It's especially good value at £65 and the brand has some great sustainability credibility, showing the factories that each garment was produced in. The Dickies 874 Work Pant is the original workwear trouser and…well it feels like it. I can’t believe I used to skate in these, they are so coarse and stiff to break in, and admittedly they feel great once you get there (though the stain proof fabric is pretty damn sweaty). They also feel indestructible and are pretty affordable at around £40 but I’m too old to have pants this uncomfortable. They also come up small with a high waist, so size up if unsure. The Uniqlo Vintage Chino is the brand’s loosest fitting, never out of stock item and it’s got a lot going for it. The brand has clearly aimed to get all the details of the classic mid-century American chino right and update them for the contemporary consumer. The fabric, the finishing on the inside of the trouser and details like the ticket pocket were really well executed. Shape wise though, this is more like a slim taper than a truly straight fitting chino and I see it as the perfect trouser for a guy who wants to loosen up but is scared off by pleats and drawstrings. The things you wear don’t just cover your body. In society they also communicate things about you to the people around you. There’s some quality academic analysis of this with regard to the semiotics of dress that I’d recommend reading if you want to nerd out about it but for the purpose of this post I’m gonna focus on the practical application of these concepts. Basic Concept The first thing to understand is that your stylistic choices don’t exist in a vacuum. Every aspect of clothing has meanings to the people around you. Those meanings are relative to the specific cultural context you live in. It’s worth understanding that context when you’re considering your personal style, as well as understanding that the choices you make about your style communicate things as well. Branding Brands have different cultural cache depending on where you live, and the things a logo says changes based on it. A plain pocket tee does not read the same way as a Carhartt pocket tee, and even then there’s nuance. In more rural areas Carhartt is straightforward workwear and reads as standard blue collar uniform, while in many cities it’s been embraced by the streetwear crowd. In the UK Stone Island has (or had) associations with football hooligan culture but can read more as a hypebeast brand in other places. Where I grew up North Face jackets weren’t technical clothing, they were the suburban white uniform de rigueur. Brand associations and perceptions are things you can ignore or try to subvert but it’s worth being aware of, in the same way that an LV monogram bag or an Hermes H belt don’t just signify wealth, they communicate “I want you to look at my clothes and think that I’m wealthy”. Often this isn’t a choice you can make. People and cultures will have their own associations with brands, and those are typically something you can ignore but that you can’t change or escape. You might’ve just seen that Patagonia vest in the store and thought it would look good on you, but that’s not going to stop other people from seeing you in it and assuming you’re one of these guys. Formality Formality in clothing has inseparable class associations. More formal clothes are associated with things like business, politics, law, and wealth generally. Does this mean that if you wear a suit to a dive bar people will assume that you’re wealthy and important? Or will they assume you’re self-aggrandizing and pretentious? Mismatching the formality of your outfit to the formality of the context you’re in can completely change how it’s received, and is something that should be considered when you’re trying to decide whether or not to put on a tie. That doesn’t mean you should never wear tailored clothes in a casual context, but it does mean that you’ll typically want to err on the side of dressing the more formal elements down. Fit Good fit is entirely dependent on what you’re trying to communicate, and you should choose how your clothes fit based on your intent. If you want people to see you as a relaxed, easy-going person, wearing a slim fit button-down tucked into slim fit chinos might be considered a good fit from a mainstream perspective but would communicate something entirely different and be less appropriate for your goals than a looser fit. Even if your goal for the fit of your clothing is to be attractive or flattering, there are many different ways to do it that communicate different vibes. A slim-fit button-up, a drapey shirt with only one or two buttons fastened, and a boxy cropped shirt showing midriff can all be flattering tops depending on the context and who you’re trying to attract. Things can also be flattering but not communicate what you want them to. If you’ve got a muscular body and you’re wearing a tight stretchy top, you’re not just saying “I have a good body”, you’re communicating “I want you to SEE how good my body is, I want your attention on my body”. Some people are totally into that kind of thing and some are turned off by it. Whether the fit of your clothes is “good” or “bad” can only be judged based on what message you’re trying to send and how that message is being received. Regional Culture Some things are only considered stylish or appropriate in certain areas and communities, often in ways that violate traditional (typically white, Western, mainstream) fashion rules. The advice “don’t be too matchy” is repeated often and is valid when talking about things like matching your tie and pocket square. But I live in Atlanta and if someone’s matched their sneakers to their pants to their shirt/jersey to their hat, that’s not a bad thing, it’s impressive and well coordinated. Different areas also have different ranges of what’s considered normal or mainstream. Clothing from designers whose work is inherently dramatic such as Rick Owens, Ann Demuelemeester, or Yohji Yamamoto can come off simply as interesting in places with a wide variety in their local aesthetics, typically denser urban areas with high diversity in local cultures. In more monocultural areas such as suburbs or more rural areas, that level of drama may read less as interesting and more as self-serious or pretentious. Keep in mind you don’t have to care if people see you that way – but it’s worth being aware of the impact your choices are having. Putting It All Together There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to clothing. The point of this discussion is that all of your choices are context-dependent. Often what makes an outfit “good” or “bad” is not an objective measure but more so a question of what was the intent, and what was the outcome? If your intent is to be attractive to sexual partners but your clothing reads as self-important and pretentious, you’ve failed in your intended purpose. If you just want to wear wild shit like Bernhard Willhelm and you see wide eyes when you walk by, you’ve succeeded. I've been reading past guides to see what could be updated and streamlined and thought to take a crack at a new Pants Guide. The previous one had a lot of prescriptive advice and touched on information I don't think is relevant or important. no offense, Nay, I know you specifically didn't write it Use this guide to help you figure out how you personally want your pants to fit. Everyone has different styles, inspirations, and goals, so it's hard to say what pants you need in your wardrobe. I don't own any duck canvas pants but maybe you love them. Maybe someone else likes cargo pants but another person thinks they're dumb. This isn't about what specific pants you should have in your wardrobe, but how to find pants that fit the way you like. As a home cook, I'm a big fan of "Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat" by Samin Nosrat. If you're familiar with her book, I hope you see some similarities in how I approach pants, which is basically that you have your own style, but here are some tools to help you understand, search for, and communicate your ideas better. __________________________________________________ Pant Diagrams and Pant Terms Before we get into details, take a look at these pant diagrams. These are from Uniqlo. Most clothing websites should have one of these, but this one is clean and simple. Keep these up as you read — specifically this one — and glance at them so you know what I'm talking about. I'm not going to define terms because it's all in these pictures already. Visual references are better than words. __________________________________________________ Pant Styles Skinny fit Skinny fit pants fit snug to the leg. They have a small leg opening ("Bottom Width" in our Uniqlo diagram) — somewhere between 5" and 7" across (12.5cm and 17.5cm). Most of the time, these are tapered. Examples. Slim fit Slim fit pants fit closer to the body than regular fit pants, but not as snug as skinny fit. They're the most popular, widely accepted style of pants at the moment. Their leg openings can vary between 6" and 7.5" (15.25cm and 19cm). Examples. Regular fit Regular fit pants don't hug the leg like skinny or slim fit pants, but they're not super big either. They're meant to fit over your legs comfortably, giving enough room for your body but not so much that they balloon out. Leg openings can be around 8" to 9" (20.25cm to 22.75cm). Examples. Wide fit Wide fit pants fit much looser than regular fit. They give more leg room for comfortability and breathability but they're most widely used for fun aesthetic purposes, i.e. playing with drape and silhouette. These leg openings can go from 9" to 11" (22.75cm to 28cm) — sometimes even more. Examples. __________________________________________________ Pant Cuts I've separated "Pant Style" from "Pant Cuts" because it's important to note that the "Cuts" listed below refer to the ratio of measurement between the (1) thigh or knee width and (2) the leg opening. Straight Straight cut pants are shaped so they shoot straight down from hip to thigh to leg opening. There's no varying leg measurements here — the legs are one circumference right down to the ankle. Examples. Tapered Tapered pants are shaped so they follow the form of the leg. They're one circumference at the thigh or knee and a smaller circumference at the ankle. The strength of the taper determines something conventional like this vs. something less conventional like a carrot cut. Examples. Bootcut Bootcut pants are cut to fit straight from hip to knee, but then widen out from the knee to bottom hem. Depending on the style, the upper block can fit slim or regular, and the strength of the bottom flare can vary as well. Examples. __________________________________________________ Pant Styles and Cuts Combining the different styles and cuts together provides different silhouettes for pants. Here are some examples: Skinny tapered and straight (most skinny jeans are tapered). Slim straight. Slim tapered. Regular straight. Regular tapered. Wide straight. Wide tapered. __________________________________________________ Pant Length Inseam vs. Outseam (or overall length) Again, check this diagram to see what "inseam" means. We generally use inseam as the default for pant leg measurement vs. using the outseam. Depending on a pant being low-rise or high-rise ("rise" is covered below), the outseam measurement will vary. The inseam will not. Pant Breaks Pant breaks describe how the fabric of your pants ends at your shoes. Here's a simple breakdown of pant breaks from Proper Cloth. Respectively, this shows a Full Break, Half Break, No Break, and Crop. I'm not going as detailed as Quarter Breaks vs. Half Breaks because these are casual pants and who cares. Sometimes you'll see internet shorthand for this as PSI, or pant-shoe interaction. Here are examples of pant breaks in real outfits: Full Break Half Break (or Quarter Break) No Break Cropped Rolling your pants For pants that are very long, a nice alternative to hemming is to give your pants a good roll (or two or three). Rolling your pants lets you easily play around with your breaks without having to visit a tailor or dry cleaner for hemming. Examples. Some other reasons for doing this: You like the look of thick, rolled cuffs and will specifically get longer pants to achieve this. You're too lazy to get your pants hemmed. You bought really fancy pants that you don't trust to get hemmed because it might ruin their intended shape. You might want to resell them later. You're too lazy to get your pants hemmed. You're wearing boots or hi-top shoes and want the whole shoe to be visible. Some days you like a full break on your pants, and some days you like a crop. "It's nice to have options," you tell yourself. You're too lazy to get your pants hemmed. What about if I'm short / tall / thicc / skinny? I can't really tell you what to do. I've seen too many examples of different body types pulling off all different kinds of pant lengths. This is where you take the information and experiment on your own. __________________________________________________ Pant Rise If you're still using our Uniqlo diagram, which you should be, this is the "Rising Length" measurement. The rise is the distance between the bottom of the crotch to the top of the waistband. Pant rise determines where the waistband sits on your body, which will determine your perceived waistline. This is useful for short and tall people, but it has nothing to do with your height and more to do with how your body is proportioned — basically the visual proportions of your torso vs. your legs. Low rise pants Low rise pants work great for people with shorter torsos and longer legs. Low rise pants will place the waistband low, around your hips. This will visually lengthen your torso in comparison to your legs. A lot of times, people don't tuck in their shirts so you can't see the waistband anyway, which gives the same illusion of an elongated torso. These will usually measure 7" to 8" (17.75cm to 20.25cm). Examples. (Some of these are just mid-rise worn low.) High rise pants High rise pants work great for people with longer torsos and shorter legs. High rise pants will place the waistband higher, generally around the proper "waist." This will visually lengthen your legs in comparison to your torso. These will usually measure 10" to 11" (25.5cm to 28cm), or more. Examples. (Likewise, some of these are just mid-rise worn higher by the waist.) In lieu of a more detailed section on pleats (which definitely deserves mention), here’s a note from u/KarateManN64: The only addition I can think of is that pleats tend to look better visually on higher rise pants. If they're lower than like 10.5" (26.75cm) then pleats tend to just be a bit too much visually and lack the space to really perform their function usefully. I also encourage everyone to play around with pleats, because I find they really help make pants more comfortable. The takeaway: Rise balances out your proportions. Figure out if you have a long torso or if you're long legged and play around with the appropriate rise. A fun takeaway: Use rise to play around with your proportions in weird ways. If you already have long legs and want to look like you have even longer legs, try high rise pants anyway. Vice versa with a long torso and low rise. A confession: Pant rise is the last thing I look at when it comes to pants because I suck. __________________________________________________ Pant Waist This one is simple. Just measure the circumference of your body where you usually wear your pants and look for the garment size that matches this measurement. This is also affected by the pants' rise, so if you're looking at high rise pants, know your true waist measurement. If you're looking at low rise pants, know your hip measurement. This does not mean look for the tagged waist size. I mean look for numbered measurements in centimeters or inches. Do not trust tagged waist size. Do not trust tagged waist size. Do not trust tagged waist size. Vanity sizing is real and shitty. Use measurements. __________________________________________________ Buying New Pants Cool, we have all this information. Now what? You need a frame of reference to understand what this new information means. This frame of reference will be a pair of pants you already own. So go grab a pair of pants from your closet — ideally your favorite pair of pants. If you don't love any of your pants, just grab any pair of pants. Now take out that piece of shit Uniqlo diagram again and some measuring tape. If you don't have measuring tape — because let's face it, most of us don't — go find a ruler, which will work just as well. I know you have a ruler somewhere. If you don't have any of that, there's an app on the iPhone called "Measure" (which is a default Apple app) that can take pretty accurate measurements of items. I'm not going to walk you through how to use the app, it's pretty straightforward. Now we have our Uniqlo diagram, a measuring tool, and a pair of pants, yes? Grab your pants and take measurements of the following: Waist Rise Inseam Leg opening Now you know what your pant measurements are. Use these numbers to compare against the measurements on various clothing websites. If you used a shitty pair of pants you hate, try to figure out why. Is the waist too small? Is the rise too low? Are the legs too short? Does it not taper enough? Use these questions to help you determine what measurements you think will work in a new pair of pants and experiment. This is important and the only way you'll figure out what pants will work best for you. __________________________________________________ Less Important Details for a Beginner's Guide Here are some things I feel beginners can safely ignore, until they really truly understand the above topics: Drape and weight This is probably one of the most important aspects I look at when it comes to pants as a hobbyist. Although they’re very important details for someone to know, I don’t think they’re necessary to understand at the beginner level, but definitely one of the next steps afterwards. Material and Texture Most mens pants are going to be some form of cotton or wool. I'm not gonna go on listing different kinds of pants because there's a whole world of different materials, but none of that matters if you don't understand how you like your pants to fit. Textures are really cool to play with but not something you really need a guide for. I think basic inspo albums and quick descriptions are good but second only to experiencing and touching different materials. On that note, here's a bunch of inspo albums for different pants to check out: Work Pants Wool Trousers Fatigues Fun Pants Cargo Pants White Pants Construction Most stores will give you good enough construction quality. Yes, H&M's construction is fine. Pants at fast fashion stores can last you for years if you size them correctly and you're just doing general daily tasks in them. Emotional durability is a different story and probably the real reason you hate your fast fashion chinos. I really couldn't tell you the details of how my own pants are constructed. Honestly it's not that important to me. I do my research based on the designer / brand, their skills, their material sourcing, etc. and trust that the construction quality is there. Color Color is really not that important vs. understanding fit and shape. I hate talking about color because it's the last thing you should worry about if you don't know how to get a fit you like. i.e. Too many people wearing weird color chinos with horrible fits. Pocket Styles 5-pocket, cargo, side pockets, a million EG pockets. They're pockets. Beyond Workwear and Americana: Western Workwear . To understand the context of this guide, you should first know a bit about workwear in general. u/Smilotron wrote this excellent guide, which I highly recommend you read. In the guide, he defines Americana as a subset of workwear. This guide defines western workwear as a subset of Americana, and focuses on the elements of Americana that have a Western vibe. Basically, it tries to thread the needle between rodeo dad and basic workwear. Still, the west is a big place. For this guide I don’t narrowly focus on one area of the west, but think more cowboy than park ranger. I’m also leaving out tailoring (something I don’t know much about) and SLP-esque stuff, although the latter does have several points of overlap. I added a couple inspo album to help show what I mean: Personal Inspo Album RRL Inspo Album from u/ancient-alien Materials One of the most important aspects of western workwear is wear. Clothing that is noticeably broken in and worn looks best, so pick materials carefully. Denim, leather (both top grain and suede), and waxed cotton show wear quite well. Wool and cotton are good materials as well. Polyester, rayon, and other synthetic materials are best avoided. I’m going to refer to both roughout and suede as “suede” because the difference isn’t very important. Also, I honestly don’t know the difference between different cotton weaves so if I say “cotton” I mean everything that’s not denim or waxed cotton. Fit There’s a fair amount of leeway when it comes to fit. You want to stick to relatively slim (not skinny) clothing: you don’t want to be swimming in anything. Still, you can go a bit wider and a bit slimmer with no issues. History A lot of Americana depends on history and heritage. I’m going to start off with a couple articles on the history of some of these items. Feel free to skip this, or read the rest of the guide and come back, it’s not essential. Bandanas Cowboy Boots Filson Levi's/Denim Mackinaw Jacket Wabash (just mouse over the underlined word “wabash” in the details section) Western Patterns Woolrich Common Items Jackets Leather Jackets (Black Roughout Trucker, Tan Racer, Brown Suede Racer, Brown Shearling) These are probably the most classic jackets for Western workwear. Any type of leather works, but suede and shearling look better than top grain. Stick to shades of brown and tan. Cafe racer, trucker, and button-up leather jackets are the best cuts. Buy From: Taylor Stitch ($), Freenote Cloth ($$), RRL ($$$) ​ Chore Coats (Waxed Cotton Freenote Cloth Jacket, Cotton Jacket) Brown chore coats are another classic element of western workwear. Waxed cotton is better, as it breaks in much more than standard cotton, but both work. Color is very important. Stick to a warm brown for regular cotton chore coats. Waxed cotton coats have more leeway: nearly any shade of brown looks good. Buy From: Carhartt ($), L.C. King ($$), Freenote Cloth ($$$) ​ Denim Jackets (Raw Denim Jacket, Shearling Jacket) Denim jackets are a bit tricky. While they certainly go with the denim-heavy vibe of western workwear, wearing them with a denim shirt and jeans is difficult to pull off. For all those non-denim shirts, however, denim jackets are great. It’s best to stick to medium wash, dark wash, or black denim. Make sure that there is a noticeable difference in wash between the color of your jacket and your jeans. A shearling lining can also help to separate multiple levels of denim. If you’re curious, this is a quick primer on the types, but they’re minor differences that don’t matter much in the end. Buy From: Levi's ($), Taylor Stitch ($$), Orslow ($$$) ​ Wool Jackets (Patterned Overshirt, Patterned Overcoat, Gray Mackinaw, Red Mackinaw) Wool jackets are the heavy hitters that make this viable in truly cold conditions. These split into two main groups: patterned jackets and mackinaw jackets. Western patterned jackets are tough to find, as very few bands carry them. They can come in any form, from overcoats to overshirts. Of course, patterned jackets are possible in other fabrics, but the brands that sell these almost always make them in wool. Mackinaw jackets are much easier to find, but not all of them look Western. Stick to gray or red buffalo plaid. Buy From: Filson Mackinaw ($$), RRL ($$$) ​ Others (RRL Knit, Wabash) I’ve listed the main categories of jackets, but there are still a few other types that work, although they are a bit more niche. The first is Wabash. Wabash is a bit of a weird one- it’s denim adjacent, as it’s indigo dyed and fades like denim. It wears in very well. The other is the RRL knit cardigans. These are typically intricately patterned and very high quality. While there are certainly more jackets that I haven’t mentioned, this list covers the main ones. Buy From: Ben Viapiana ($$$), RRL ($$$) ​ Shirts Plain Denim Shirts (Dark Wash, Medium Wash, Light Wash, Chambray, Embroidered) Denim shirts are an absolute essential. While any denim shirt will do, a Western yoke helps to put it firmly in the category of Western. A Western yoke is the extra piece of fabric that comes over the shoulders, as you can see in this pic. Check out this guide for more info on shirt parts. Just like denim jackets, be sure there is a significant difference between the color of your pants and your shirt. Light and medium wash shirts are the most easily worn, but dark wash can work as well. Chambray shirts are so similar to denim shirts that I’m not going to differentiate between them, so they’re included in this as well. Embroidery and wear can make these a lot more interesting. Buy From: Levi's ($), Taylor Stitch ($$), Iron Heart ($$$) ​ Patterned Denim Shirts (Wabash, Decorated, TS Western, Striped Denim, RRL Jacquard) There are a few patterned denim shirts, although they are a bit rare. Wabash shirts are the most common, although they can still be tough to find.. There are also a few shirts that have a similar pattern to Wabash, but with a more intricate design instead of just dots. Striped denim shirts and shirts with jacquard patterns are two other good options. Buy From: Ben Viapiana ($$$), Iron Heart ($$$) ​ Other Cotton and Wool Shirts (Red Iron Heart, Freenote Cloth, Faherty Patterned, Pendleton Flannel) These shirts are difficult, but not for lack of options. Rather, the overwhelming amount of options makes it difficult to find shirts that really fit the Western vibe. It’s difficult to make any hard rules about which shirts work, but there are a few guidelines. First, a Western yoke goes a long way towards cementing that Western look. Second, pay attention to color: red, orange, and brown are generally the best colors. This is probably best seen with the Pendleton flannels. This flannel has that dusty Western vibe, while this one just looks really flat. You can also see this with the Iron Heart buffalo plaid flannels. This flannel definitely looks more Western than this green one. In addition, pay attention to patterns. Buffalo plaid is a safe bet, and you want to stay away from anything that’s too busy. While this shirt is the same color as the Iron Heart one above, the addition of an extra color and all those lines makes it way too busy. Shirts with Western patterns, such as this shirt look really good, but are tough to find. Buy From: Taylor Stitch ($), Pendleton ($$), Iron Heart ($$$) ​ Henleys (Natural Henley, Indigo Henley) Henleys are an Americana staple. White/natural henleys are the most classic, and can work on their own or as undershirts. Indigo, black, and gray are also good options. Buy From: J. Crew ($), Taylor Stitch ($$), Merz B. Schwanen ($$$) ​ Others (White Oxford, White Indigo Stripe, RRL Striped, Suede) There are a few other niche options that don’t really fit well into a category. White shirts work as a good basic, although they don’t have a strong Western vibe. There are some white patterned shirts that look good, many of which have a Mandarin collar. Suede shirts are also a fantastic option in almost any color but, again, are difficult to find. Buy From: RRL ($$$) ​ Pants Jeans (Black Jeans, Medium Wash, Raw) Jeans are absolutely the core of western workwear. In terms of fit, sticking with relatively slim (not skin tight) jeans are a safe option to avoid the rodeo dad look. Make sure to either cuff or crop your jeans so that there isn’t too much piling up on your boots. A variety of washes can work, including black, but washes that mimic natural fading are best. For example, these jeans look a lot better than these jeans primarily due to fit and how natural the fading looks. Buy From: Levi's ($), Naked and Famous ($$), RRL ($$$) ​ Other Pants (Suede Pants, White Jeans, Brown Pants) While jeans are really all you need, there are a few other options. Suede pants look good in almost every color. White jeans are a surprisingly good option, but it’s difficult to find the right cut and thickness. Brown pants, while not giving as strong of a Western vibe, can also work. For brown pants, stick to a warm brown (just like with the regular cotton chore coats). Buy From: Rogue Territory ($$), RRL ($$$) ​ Shoes Cowboy Boots (Dark Brown Suede, Light Brown Suede) Cowboy boots are the most obvious option for footwear. There are, however, a couple ways you can go wrong with these. First, don’t tuck your pants into your boots. Next, let’s look at two pairs of boots: these work boots versus these Lucchese boots. They’re both brown cowboy boots with stitching on the toe, but the Lucchese boots look far better. This is due to a few things: the work boots have a thick lugged rubber sole, a square toe, and a much chunkier profile. The Lucchese leather is also shinier. From this example, you can see the importance of silhouette: cowboy boots should be relatively slim, have a thin leather sole, and not have a square toe. Suede and top grain both look great, and any shade of brown or tan is a good color. Buy From: Tecovas ($), Viberg ($$$), Lucchese ($$$) ​ Chelsea Boots (Brown Chelseas) If you don’t want to go full cowboy, chelsea boots are a fantastic option. The same warnings of cowboy boots apply: make sure the sole and toe aren’t too large and chunky or you end up with Blundstones. On the other side, you want to avoid streetwear chelsea boots with a crepe sole like these Common Projects. Also steer clear of anything highly polished like these boots: you want your boots to look like they can take a hit. Something like these Vibergs are perfect. As with cowboy boots, suede and top grain both look great, and any shade of brown or tan is perfect. Buy From: Astorflex ($), R.M. Williams ($$), Viberg ($$$) ​ Other Boots (Engineer Boots, Brown Lace-Up Boots) Engineer boots are an option with a strong Western vibe, but they’re a bit of an acquired taste. Of course, you can forgo all of these shoes altogether and simply wear a set of standard brown boots. Just like with the chelsea boots, you need to thread the needle between overly chunky work boots and sleek dress boots. Something like Iron Rangers are a good example. Once again, stick to brown and tan. Buy From: Red Wing ($), Oak Street ($$), Viberg ($$$) ​ Accessories Hats (Tan Hat, Brown Hat) Hats are difficult to style without being over the top. Keep them relatively small and unstructured, and you should be good. Dark colors also help to avoid looking like these idiots. Buy From: Stetson ($), Hampui ($$), Lone Hawk ($$$) ​ Jewelry (Jewelry) Rings can look super dope, but show some restraint. When it comes to turquoise jewelry, please try to buy from Native American artists. This helps to support the communities that originally created a lot of this art and are historically impoverished due to the actions of the US government. Beyond the Basic Bastard: Building a Minimalist Wardrobe This is the second thread in a series of threads about building your wardrobe in a specific direction after you have become content with The Basic Bastard Wardrobe. For the second iteration, we’re going to be going over minimalism. Note that, while minimalism is also a lifestyle, we will be going over the clothing style. Minimalism can also refer to a way of living in which the individual only buys/owns/consumes what is necessary and avoids excess, but we will be focused on minimalism from an artistic and aesthetic perspective. Conveniently enough for those living the minimalist lifestyle, though, wardrobes with a minimal style can very easily be pared down to just a few essentials. One nice thing is that the Basic Bastard wardrobe is almost a minimalist wardrobe already. Each piece is simple and clean and can be paired with anything else. A minimalist wardrobe, at its core, is usually grayscale, and contains pieces that don’t attract too much attention. There are some different types of minimalist wardrobes, like scandinavian minimalism, but I will be going over the most basic minimalist wardrobe. Really, you can make almost any wardrobe minimalist by buying clothing without detailing, loud patterns, etc. and keeping each item simple and clean. Characteristics I would say the defining characteristic of minimalist style is its lack of characteristics. I would think that someone who dresses in a minimalist style imagines their clothing as a sort of blank slate. Maybe you want to look simple and clean, maybe you want to look cool and mysterious, or maybe you just want to wear nice outfits without having to think too hard about pairing things together — if any of these things describe you, then a minimalist wardrobe might be for you. Minimalist wardrobes generally have clean lines, a lack of branding, and mostly monochrome color schemes. Often the point of interest of an outfit will be a fabric, texture, or simple pattern. Often, an outfit will be composed of pieces that are not interesting on their own, but are aesthetically pleasing when paired together. Sizing can change your aesthetic entirely. Wearing something oversized or loose gives off a much more casual and streetwear-esque vibe than something slimmer, which might work better for the Scandinavian minimalism aesthetic. Buying Minimalist wardrobe pieces tend to be white and black, but colors like navy and gray are also quite common — especially in Scandinavian minimalist wardrobes. Don’t be afraid to try other colors, but if you are unsure what to go with, then it would probably be best to stick to one of those four colors. Wardrobe Staples T-Shirts: I’m not sure how necessary it is to include this, but because they are so incredibly common in minimalist wardrobes, I’ve decided to include them. What even needs said about them? If you get lots of wear out of yours, consider upgrading to something a little nicer. Also, consider getting a color besides white, gray, or black. Navy is an easy addition, and something like dark green or burnt orange can be used for a scandinavian minimalist look. If you’re unsure of where to find something, look here first. $$ Arket: Created and owned by H&M, this brand is near the upper limit of what I would consider “cheap” clothing and is not available in the USA, but if you live in Europe you might consider checking them out. Asket: A Swedish basics brand that advertises its transparency. Despite its similar name and area of origin, Asket is not associated with Arket as far as I know. Their prices are reasonable, and stock their items in short, normal, and long sizes aside from the normal XS-XL sizes. Community Clothing: A brand that prides itself on its British-made manufacturing, fair wages, humane working conditions, and more, this English brand makes clean clothing at reasonable prices. COS: H&M’s older and more subtle brother. Much more minimal and Scandinavian than H&M. NEED: Need Supply’s house brand. Their clothes put a contemporary spin on basics, are assembled in the USA, and are sold at prices not too far above those at COS. $$$ Acne Studios: A Swedish fashion house that makes mostly minimal clothing in interesting designs and cuts. Their denim is one of their more popular products. A.P.C.: This brand is the first one I would think of if someone asked for brands that make minimal and modern clothing. Retail is a bit expensive, but plenty of A.P.C. can be found secondhand for great prices. Folk: Folk makes relatively basic pieces and reminds me of a higher-end J. Crew. They make very simple and accessible clothing. Norse Projects: This is one of MFA’s favorite higher-end brands. Norse makes simple clothes with nice colors and sometimes some different fabrics and textures. Beyond the Basic Bastard: Workwear and Americana This is the first thread in a series of threads about building your wardrobe in a specific direction after you have become content with The Basic Bastard Wardrobe. For the first iteration, we’re going to be going over one of /r/malefashionadvice’s original loves: workwear. MFA and workwear have had a long and storied relationship, but in recent years it has taken a backseat to things like SLP. Despite that, workwear is still a somewhat popular look that is easily accessible and easy to start wearing when you are coming from the Basic Bastard. This thread is not meant to be a comprehensive informational guide on the roots of the Americana & Workwear aesthetic. While that is an interesting topic, and is something I am interested in researching further, this is mainly meant to be an introductory wardrobe expansion guide for those that are new to fashion. Characteristics I should start by specifying that there is arguably a difference between Americana and workwear. Americana is a style inspired by heritage American clothing, while workwear is a style of clothing that draws from clothing worn by manual laborers. So while a greaser look might not perfectly fit into the aesthetic of workwear, and a french work jacket is not technically Americana, the aesthetics share so many similarities that making two separate guides would be difficult and unnecessary. From here on out, I will be calling the combination of the two aesthetics “workwear,” even though it would be more technically correct to include both each time. Traditionally, workwear has tough materials and roomier cuts. It is commonly associated with fabrics like denim, flannel, and canvas. Common footwear choices include leather boots and shoes. Common features of garments include tough materials, multiple pockets, and utilitarian roots. These garments were originally created for or chosen because of a combination of durability, utility, and price. A long time has passed since then, though, and fashion brands have drawn inspiration from and appropriated these looks for decades. Aside from manual laborers, plenty of garments have been taken from various militaries and incorporated into everyday fashion. Examples include M43 jackets and breton shirts, among many many others. Ideally, the modern versions of these clothes are made in their country of origin or another first-world country, and their durability should be on par with the originals. Buying Common Items Jeans: The most common and ubiquitous of any article of clothing under the workwear umbrella. You know what they are. Made of denim and usually blue, these pants eventually break-in and fit the wearer’s body like a glove. They can be worn with any casual outfit and you don’t have to feel bad about wearing them in the yard or spilling sauce on them. You probably already have these, but if you find yourself wanting another pair, consider trying a more roomy cut like the Levi’s 501 or Unbranded 601. For added authenticity, try a heavyweight t-shirt. Crew, Etsy Flannel Shirt: Can be worn as an inner layer in winter and an outer layer in spring and fall. These shirts are versatile and useful to have, on top of just being plain comfortable. Bean, Portuguese Flannel, Woolrich Also see: Your Favorite ___ for $___: Flannels Denim and Chambray Shirt: Try throwing one of these on instead of the usual OCBD. These add a bit of texture to the outfit and can be worn either as an overshirt or a base layer. Buy from: Spier & Mackay, Levi’s, J. Crew, Taylor Stitch Henley Shirt: Originally a rowing shirt, these are great for when you want to add something with a little more character than a t-shirt and a little less than a button-up. Buy from: Target, L.L. Bean, Pistol Lake, 3sixteen Boots: Boots are mostly worn in Fall, Winter, and early Spring when the weather is cold. They are usually brown, and they look good with pretty much anything (are you seeing the pattern here?). They can take a beating and will last a long time as if you take care of them. When in doubt, throw these on with a pair of jeans. Other Items These items aren’t as overtly Americana/Workwear, but are still popular and versatile items to have in one’s wardrobe that either have roots in or fit in with the style. Leather Jacket: A classic choice for a stylish-yet-rugged jacket, leather jackets can be worn for a greaser look, or can be worn in a more sleek style. Plenty of fast-fashion stores have fake leather jackets, but those will fall apart quickly and/or age very poorly. For something that will last longer and look good doing it, leather jackets are an investment. Pea Coat: Originally a naval coat, these are great pieces of outerwear that are cozy and versatile. They aren’t the best choice for warmer climates, though. Buy from: Banana Republic, J. Crew, Target Military Jacket: Though there is not just one military jacket, I am using it as a general term to cover different types of jackets, like an M43 or M65 (note the standing collar compared to the M43). Pocket and collar layout and design may vary, but generally these are olive or brown jackets with plenty of pockets. Some stores may also call them field jackets. Buy from: Uniqlo, Banana Republic Fatigue Shirt and CPO Shirt: Inspired by vintage military shirts, these shirts most easily worn over a t-shirt or button-up when it’s a bit too cool for just one layer. Buy from: Stan Ray, Schott, Military surplus stores Work Pants and Fatigue Pants: Try wearing these instead of the usual chinos. Often these pants have a distinct style of pockets. Though work pants and fatigue pants are different types of pants, I have lumped them into one section because I felt that they are not all that different. These types of pants may also have more pockets, and usually will be straight-cut rather than slim. Buy from: Carhartt and Carhartt WIP, Stan Ray, Dickies Breton Stripe Shirt: A shirt with a bit of character and a nautical heritage and vibe. Put one of these on with anything. They’re comfortable and more fun than an average t-shirt. Buy from: Muji, Armor Lux, Saint James Cable Knit/Aran Sweater: Aran sweaters were originally worn by fisherman from the Aran Islands off the coast of Ireland. These are more eye-catching than a normal crew-neck sweater, and are ideally nice and thick. Buy from: Inverallan, Aran Crafts, Howlin Cap-Toe Sneakers: I would be remiss if I didn’t at least mention these sneakers. An American classic, these sneakers can easily find their way into any outfit. Buy from: Converse, PF Flyers Moccasins: An alternative to boots that can be worn comfortably during the Spring and Summer, moccasins are a great choice for casual leather shoes, and can be worn more easily in a workwear wardrobe than something like sleek chukka boots or derbies. Buy from: L.L. Bean, Rancourt, Quoddy Brands Disclaimer: Some of the brands in this section, especially the ones featured in the one-dollar-sign budget tier, will likely sell many other things besides clothing that fits the workwear aesthetic. $ First, check places like thrift stores, military surplus stores, etsy, and eBay. Items like jeans, flannels, fatigue shirts, and work jackets can all be found for cheap. Carhartt: A classic workwear brand, Carhartt makes jackets, pants, sweatshirts, and more. Their cuts are a bit boxy, so if you find yourself wanting something that has a more modern and slim fit and you have money to spare, check out their WIP line, which is mentioned in the next budget tier. Dickies: Rugged work pants in a variety of fits at a great price. What’s not to love? They also make work jackets and shirts, but their pants are what they do best. J. Crew: J. Crew sells a large variety of clothes, some of them fitting the workwear wardrobe more than others. Most notably, the outerwear section has many items that fit the aesthetic, from pea coats to military parkas. Check back during Fall and Winter months for the best selection. J. Crew’s clothing is a bit overpriced at retail, so make sure to buy on sale at 30% off or more, which they run often. Levi’s: You know them for their jeans, but Levi’s also has plenty of other pants, shirts, and jackets (including denim jackets, of course) to complete a basic workwear wardrobe. L.L. Bean: A heritage American brand with a previously too-lenient return policy, L.L. bean makes solidly constructed clothing and accessories for traversing the great outdoors at very reasonable prices. Ralph Lauren: Though many MFA members (myself included) prefer other brands, it would be wrong of me to leave Ralph Lauren out of a heritage workwear brands list. RL of course makes polos, and also has a wide range of other shirts, pants, jackets, and more. $$ Bleu De Paname: A brand that makes great work jackets and pants, Bleu De Paname takes inspiration from French workwear. Carhartt WIP: The fashion-oriented brother of Carhartt, the WIP line is based in Europe, and makes classic workwear and Carhartt garments in more modern cuts. Jackets are less boxy, pants are a bit more tapered, etc. Gustin: Gustin is a brand with a crowd-sourced business model. The quality is great for the price paid, but be aware that you will have to wait for multiple months to actually receive your product. Gustin makes every core item in a wardrobe, from jeans and button-up shirts to leather jackets and white sneakers. Stan Ray: A brand that originally gained notoriety in the fashion world for their fatigue pants, Stan Ray has branched out to make more types of pants, jackets, shorts, and hats. Taylor Stitch: Taylor Stitch makes clothing that would be good for any Basic Bastard, and they have a solid selection of shirts and pants for a workwear wardrobe, including chambray, denim, and flannel shirts, as well as plenty of overshirts and a couple types of work pants. $$$ 3sixteen: Known for their great denim, 3sixteen also makes other staple pieces like shirts and jackets. Apolis: Apolis became popular for their MiUSA chore coats, but makes core wardrobe items like t-shirts, button-ups, jeans, and chinos. Filson: Usually recommended for their bags, Filson also has plenty of great outerwear as well as shirts, pants, and other wardrobe essentials. Folk: A English brand that makes clothing that is workwear-inspired rather than strictly workwear. Great small details and more minimal than most of the other brands listed. Depending on where you live, Fall is either something that is rapidly approaching, already upon you, or still some ways away. In any case, it's one of the most fun seasons to dress for (in my opinion), so take a look at this guide I made. This is meant mostly to be a guide for fall casual wear (because I feel that formalwear changes less than casual clothing, and because that would just be way too much for me to do) Disclaimer: This is my first attempt at making a guide, and easily my largest contribution to MFA at this point, so feel free to give me advice, comments, feedback, etc. This guide is sort of a sequel to Veroz's last fall guide, so if you haven't checked that out, head over there too, because while I did look to that guide for some inspiration, I created this one from scratch, largely independently of Veroz's and other MFA guides. Disclaimer II: The examples I linked to are just a small selection of the possibilities, meant to give ideas, inspiration, and a visual representation of the things I'm talking about. Field Coat/M65 - I've never owned one of these, and I'm not a huge fan of the military styling, but they definitely look good in some looks. Filson J. Crew Alpha Industries Harrington - Classic, British, Clean. Baracuta G-9 Chore Coat - Perfect for sort of an American Workwear type vibe. Pointer Carhartt Denim Jacket - Great for layering or for a light jacket on its own. Get a light and a dark for ultimate options. Levi's More Levi's Sweaters & Cardigans Cashmere or Wool Crew Neck Cashmere or Wool V-Neck Fair Isle Cable Knit Basic Cardigan Shawl Collar Cardigan Shirts Tees Crew Neck. I'm a fan of J. Crew's Pocket Tees. V Neck. I'm sure everyone has their favorite brand of V Neck tees, but I like these from Nordstroms. Henley. These from Urban Outfitters are my favorite, but I like J. Crew's as well. Button-Downs & Button-Ups Assorted OCBDs You have a bunch- great news: you can still wear 'em during fall, and they're great for layering, e.g. under a sweater or cardigan. Chambray workshirt Denim workshirt Flannels. Pendleton makes the best flannels. I love Pendleton. Pants Chinos I'm partial to J. Crew's, in Urban Slim. I think you should have several pairs and several colors. Here are some ideas: Tan/Khaki, Light Brown, Dark Brown, Mustard, Burnt Orange, Olive, Navy, Grey. Jeans Always have some good jeans. Can't go wrong with Levi's. Cords Cords are the best fall pants. I'm declaring that right now. They are just great. I like these from J. Crew. Get a couple pairs in a couple colors. Ideas: Tan/Khaki, Light Brown, Rich Chocolatey Brown, Olive, Grey. Basically they're the same as chinos as far as versatility and usage, but they are more textured, so you have to keep that in mind. Shoes Leather Work Boots. Everyone on MFA has an opinion on what the best boot is, depending on your price point, but here are some to look at. Red Wing Iron Ranger. Probably the most recommended boot on MFA. Classic, durable, good-looking. Red Wing Classic Moc. I like these even better than the Iron Ranger. Wolverine 1000 mile boot. Another classic, oft-recommended boot. Chippewa GQ. Another classic. Thorogood. A nice-looking boot for a lower price point. LL. Bean Katadhin Iron Works Engineer. Solid alternative to any of the other boots on this list. Bean Boots/Duck Boots These aren't really a necessity unless you live in a really wet climate, but I like how they look in many fall outfits. The classics come from LL. Bean. Sneakers or Plimsolls Vans are my favorite for this type of shoe. The link I included is a nice looking style for fall. More Vans. This Vans x J. Crew shoe is great. I just got a pair myself. Both colors are good for fall. Moccasins LL. Bean Eastland Shoe Co. Oak Street Accessories There are plenty of options here, and I won't go into much detail, but two of my favorite items to wear for warmth and looks in fall and winter are scarves and leather gloves. For scarves, I suggest wool and cashmere, in a variety of lengths and patterns.
