In order of pictures you have Ember, Sunny, Jetta, and Dulcet. The white dog is my current dog Archie, and the black dog is my late dog York. Here's how I got each of them, in order: Jetta (8yrs, F brown tortico manx) - 8 years ago I had a friend who would watch my dog while I was at work. My friend also fostered animals. One day she was given a 6 month old kitten found on the side of the road. She was clearly the runt of the litter (which is true to this day, she's never grown bigger than 6lbs, despite eating a ton) and they think she was abandoned by her mom due to having some trouble walking. She was terrified of everything and everyone except, somehow, my 75lb massive black dog. Long story short, she bonded to him, and would refuse to eat or do anything when he wasn't around. When I went to pick up my dog one day my friend just handed me the kitten and a bag of cat food and said "for her own good, she's going home with you". And that's how I spent a night googling how to take care of a cat after I had already gotten one. Sunny & Dulcet (9yrs M Orange tabby, 16yrs F grey tortico) - 3 years ago one of my best friends suddenly passed away, and left behind her two cats. A few weeks after she passed, her family contacted me and said no one else could take them so the cats were mine. No questions asked, just they were now mine. And that was how my cat count went up to 3. Ember (4yrs black shorthair) - This is a slightly longer story, and the only one I'm not sure if it fully qualifies as the CDS. 2 years ago I received a call from a dog trainer friend about a cat at a local cat rescue having some issues. Ember, despite being the sweetest and cuddliest cat you could imagine, could not be adopted and had been with the rescue for a while. Along with the black cat bias, he also had medical issues that would require a special diet and monitoring. On top of that, he had had a PU surgery, and apparently a male cat without a penis is a deal breaker for some people?? It completely erased so many of his medical issues and made it easier to raise him, but some prospective adopters dropped out when they found that out about him. I don't get people. My dog trainer friend recommended me for Ember because Jetta is a special needs kitty due to having spinal bifida/manx syndrome with needs similar to Ember's, and my friend knows I'm not bothered by taking care of her. I told my friend I wasn't interested in any more cats. I had enough already. Well, the people from the rescue just so happened to be there the next time I went to dog training with my friend (my dog Archie is a therapy dog for other reactive dogs, so he helps out) and after talking to them I realized it was basically me or him sitting alone for how many months or years waiting for the right owner. This is the only one I'm not sure if it truly counts as the CDS, since I did make a conscious decision to adopt him, even though I wasn't planning on it. And that's how I got number 4. - Don't get me wrong, I love my cats and they are very much part of the family. But I didn't ask for any of them, and I'm not asking for any more. My cat is very easy-going and adaptable. I tried plenty of “low tracking” litters, clumping litters, scented litters and nothing does it all. I’ve tried the Arm and Hammer ones, the Pretty Litter, TidyCats, and Dr. Elsey’s bagged one. I think my cat would be okay with the pellets or something along those lines but he poops a lot and I don’t want it to smell in the upstairs all the time. I feel like everything I find sucks in one component, but is good in another. Hey guys, I need advice. I’ve been dating this guy for about a month. He lives in a tiny flat with his 1 year old male cat who is not yet neutered. The smell of the cat litter is a huge problem that he wasn’t aware of until I pointed it out, it would usually be a red flag that someone doesn’t know they skink but honestly he is such a sweet guy and I can tell he just needs some help. I’ve never known anything as bad as this smell! Before you get inside the flat you can smell the litter from the corridor, even in the lift that he uses. Walking into the flat the smell is thick. He keeps one litter box in the living room and another in the kitchen, as his vet told him he had to have two. I’ve already convinced him to remove the one from the kitchen so he is now down to one litter tray. It is a covered tray. The cat itself likes to pick up the litter and kick it around, the litter is everywhere, if you don’t sweep for a few days the floors, sofas, countertops, coffee tables etc are all dusted with cat litter. The cat is not very clean, I sometimes notice his feet are wet when he walks on me. Cats I’ve had in the past have been meticulous about staying clean so I’m confused why this cat doesn’t mind mess. The cat pees on the sofa in the same spot every night, and is not allowed in the corridor, bathroom or bedroom because he pees on any clothes, shoes, towels left on the floor. The house owner struggles with his mental health as-well as being AuDHD so we have to be realistic about how consistently he can keep these spaces cat safe, it is easier for him to not allow the cat, especially now during winter with SAD. The worst part of the problem, which really is what needs dealing with urgently, is that the smell sticks to anyone and anything that briefly enters the flat. When I see him outside of his home, he smells strongly of litter, standing near him the smell is pungent. The smell is on my clothes and in my hair and skin after visits. It’s in my car after a 10 minute drive home from his house. When I get home, every bag, shoe, clothing, hair tie, needs to be put in quarantine until I can put them in the washing machine. I then need to shower and double shampoo my hair, then when I set my used towel to dry, I can smell it on the towel the next day when it was used to dry my clean hair which is just ?????!!!??? Please, I really like this guy, and regardless of if we continue dating, he needs help and the kitty needs help. Any realistic advice is welcome, please bare in mind he very much struggles with his mental health and getting rid of the cat is absolutely not an option. Oh and also he hires a cleaner who comes once a week so although he does struggle himself, the place is maintained. He has been to the vet, he knows the cat needs to be neutered but he has undergone surgery recently and the cat already has a lot of trauma from when he was a kitten, so that is not possible until the cat is less anxious. For context: This is Toad, he’s a one year old boy and pretty much my entire world. The past few weeks since he got fixed he’s been acting funny, peeing on everything for seemingly no reason. The story begins here, a few days ago he peed on a gray plastic bag (that was next to his litter box as preparation for its next cleaning). I didn’t know what to do other than pick it up and throw it out, as I was doing that, a few drops landed on his pillow, they were a dark pink color. My brain immediately went to “UTI! That’s why he’s been peeing on everything!” I’ll admit I panicked. I started searching for vets in my area, they were all closed. I expanded my search to a 20 mile radius, made some calls, ultimately ended with me getting an appointment 3 days out at a Petco 30 minutes away. I explain what’s going on to the vet, they take him back for an ultrasound and to extract a urine sample. A bit later they bring him back and I’m told that everything looks fine internally, his urine visibly looked fine as well, but the culprit was a flea that had made its way inside of him and had been feeding on his penis. That’s where the blood had been coming from. They removed it of course, but my god, that was an expensive flea. Moral of the story is,, sometimes it’s not a UTI. Sometimes it’s a flea biting your cats dick paired with behavioral issues. Never in a million years could I have predicted this outcome. Pictures showed no image. I get to the store and it’s 8 bags of 30lbs of cat litter and 2 bags of food. Fuck that bullshit. Not putting that in my car. I also let the last customer know why I was cancelling their order. Maybe nothing happens. However, for those who care about what the holy grail of litter means to me, it is as follows, which I share purely out of the nice guy in me, because I would want someone to share this with me. So I just purchased 13 different types of litter and literally created an excel sheet and monitored tracking, smell, cleanliness inside the snowy, duration and how fast for the bin to get full. I have finally come up with the perfect combination of litters. It isn’t cheap but it isn’t terrible, it is about 1.5-1.7 times the cost of Arm & Hammer Slide and those premium clay litters. So this combination I settled on gave me: - zero tracking - zero smell - lasted the longest among the 22 different combinations I tried It should be noted I have two cats, one of which is unstable diabetic so pees excessively If you have just one cat and/or none of your cats are diabetic, your results will be even better than mine so lucky you. I have the Pet Snowy litter box, and I use Glad Cherry Blossom garbage bags, and I use the third party pet snowy bag clips you can buy on Etsy, so you don’t have to pay for the expensive pet snowy bags. For additional smell control, I use a healthy sprinkle of: https://a.co/d/9XH9qhL and https://a.co/d/aLJeFU9 I put a healthy sprinkle in with the litter and also a healthy sprinkle in the empty bag in the bin. The litter combination I use is as follows: 3 Cups of the multigrain Sustainably Yours https://www.petsmart.ca/5308031.html 4 Cups of CatIt Pea Husk Litter https://a.co/d/e7vh7UP 2cups PetSafe unscented litter crystals https://a.co/d/hpge2KE This lasted my two cats, one with very excessive urinating, 2.5 days between changes, zero tracking, zero smell, no scooping. It would at least 3.5 days if my cat was urinating normally, probably even 4 days. So this is, to me, the perfect combination. The only drawback is the cost being about 1.5-1.75 times the cost of Arm&Hammer Slide but the trade off is worth it. There is no other drawback to this combination. I have tested it thoroughly, tried every litter out there, and charted it all. I put my personal word behind this combination and that might not mean anything since you don’t know me, but I would be VERY surprised if someone tried this as I’ve outlined and didn’t also have the exact same conclusion as me. After seeing all of the warnings about Pretty Litter I switched to Pidan tofu litter. I cleaned out the litter box and put new heavy duty litter box bags in there before putting in the new litter. I’m afraid I took away any familiar smell that would indicate to him it’s his potty box not a big food bowl… what can I do? Has anyone else experienced this? I usually shop at ALDI, which doesn’t have plastic bags. I’m not a fan of the idea of plastic grocery bags in general, but sometimes I go to Walmart to stock up on grocery bags for litter scooping. I’m sure I could figure something out if I move to a state that’s outlawed plastic bags, but I’m just wondering what’s the best system people have found. Extra small garbage bags? Brand is World’s Best (red bag). It claims to have minimal dusting, but I guess it wasn’t tested against a black cat. I just got the new litter today, so I can’t speak to how well it works at deodorizing or clumping, but it do be dusty. He had it all over his face, but I forgot to get a picture before wiping it off. My guy took to it immediately though, to the point that he will go in his litter box just to play in it. Empty bread bag, chip bag, electronics packaging, etc. As long as it doesn't have holes, I use it to scoop my cat's litter. This allows me to use a new bag every time and tie it off immediately to reduce the smell. Not sure if everyone's already doing this or it's just me.
