Why do chargers want phone apps?
You drive to a gas station, you insert your credit card, you pick your fuel and squeeze. Why are "many" chargers choosing to make you download an app, create a profile, load a credit card on file etc just to use it? Is it saving them money somehow? Others will accept CC at the charger itself but the rate per KW is higher if you do that. I honestly think a lot of the fuss is dealing with these various apps across people's personal phones. Sure if you WANT plug and charge, go for it - but if you're traveling, sometimes you just need to tap your card and let it rip. This particular question comes up as there's a charger in Tennessee in an area that has poor cellular coverage from certain cell carriers, and it has a bad rating on PlugShare because it has no backup payment method - you HAVE to use your phone....and its right at the midpoint of a long stretch of no other chargers...at least no other fast ones. I drove out of my way to avoid the risk of it not working....seems...dumb. submitted by /u/Fun_Yesterday_1326 to r/electricvehicles [link] [comments]

Former Army Ranger/Sniper & Long Distance thru-hiker here. Your bugout loadouts are unhinged.
Loadout: 50+ mile Sniper Adventure Challenge Race Kit (you don’t need this for bugging out!) Hey guys. I don’t thinks that having a military background makes somebody immediately qualified to give advice about prepping or moving over land. I actually think that a lot of Veterans overpack and are focus focused on the wrong thing for prepping or “bugging out”. We were trained to have logistics, supply, and fight. If you go into one of these situations with that mindset, you will be carrying way too much stuff. Following my time in the Ranger Regiment and as a conventional sniper, I started knocking out multi hundred mile treks around the United States. Dude, I ate so much humble pie from carrying too much weight and not understanding what it means to truly self support. In the military, you assume, “one is none and two is one”, meaning: you need to have redundancy in your gear. My pack for hiking the 800 mile Arizona Trail weighed about 22 pounds, 30 pounds when I had to walk 20 miles plus with no water points. I had a full kit: Bivy sleeping bag, water, filtration, and food for about five days. I covered +/- 30 miles a day for 40 days from the Mexican border to Utah. I experienced heat exhaustion and some gnarly foot injuries that I had to take care of out in the field. All this to say: you guys are carrying way too much stuff if you plan on walking 20 miles with no/little training. First: safest course of action for a lot of things is to stay in place. Here is a simple loadout for getting home if it’s 20 miles away: One Nalgene Bottle (everything in this kit goes inside the bottle when stored) -space blanket -Swiss Army knife -Cell phone charger pack -Ultra light rain jacket -Electrolytes -Antidiarrheal/ibuprofen (as long as you keep the water inside you you can probably make it home) -Sunscreen -Chapstick -2,000 calories -cheap sunglasses -headlamp -TP -aquamira tablets (chloranamine) -Collapsible pack (mystery ranch has a 19L) -compass (maybe) -if it’s winter time, obviously this list changes, you can fit one of those REI brand puffy jackets into pretty small spaces. Costco and farm supply stores have great gloves for $6 a set. That’s all you need to get home and walk 20 miles. Water is the most important thing. Water over a gun. Most people who serve in combat don’t actually shoot their weapon, every single one of them drinks water and goes to the bathroom. I’m all for prepping and being prepared - I know that I’m just some guy on the Internet but I have a lot of experience walking in and out of austere environments. On the tier list of things that you need, a firearm is pretty low - but probably still an essential item, if you know how to use it. If you’re looking for good shoes, I really like Hoka and Altras and for boots La Sportiva. You do not need three pocket knives and a Glock 19 with six mags and a plate carrier to get home when you live in rural Virginia or wherever. If you can carry in your state, cool, then put a Glock +2 mags in a fanny pack. Hot take: Your cell phone has a compass that will work even without service, it also has a flashlight, those little battery banks are pretty valuable and while I do like analog - if you’re truly reducing weight, then use the device that you use every single day that works without fail for hundreds of days in a row. Your cell phone is durable, it’s probably the item that you use the most and drop and it gets wet and it still works every single day. I wouldn’t take my personal cell phone into a war, but we’re just talking about getting home. submitted by /u/FTWkansas to r/prepping [link] [comments]

How exactly would you charge a cell phone using only 1950s-60s materials?
Obviously you have electronic components, but I mean, would you have to construct a makeshift USB plug, or what? How far back in time before it's not possible? EDIT: The character didn't know he would be time traveling. He did not bring a charger with him. He can still use the phone to access files, photos, camera, etc. EDIT 2, since people are still responding: Of course I know there were modern wall outlets, and batteries, and cars had cigarette lighters. THE CHARACTER DOESN'T HAVE A CHARGING CABLE, if he did, I wouldn't be asking the question. He has a common 2025 cell phone so most likely a USB-c. Is this a final idea? Not at all. I'm still forming the story so this is just throwing potential obstacles in his way to see what works. submitted by /u/Terrible-Computer-12 to r/Writeresearch [link] [comments]

To clarify, a laptop has a lithium battery but isn't a charger, so that can go in the overhead. A portable phone charger that fits into a pocket cannot be in the overhead and cannot be charged while on the flight, but can be used (one and only one) to power a cell phone provided it is in view. Brazil's justice fines Apple US$2.3 million and suspends the sale of iPhones without chargers.
iPhone 12 models and up were excluded from the list of registered devices in Brazil. Briefly, there is a law in Brazil that prohibits the sale of one product being conditional on the sale of another product. As you cannot buy a cell phone without also buying a charger, the sale of these devices has been banned in Brazil today. Apple had claimed that it had stopped including chargers in packaging to reduce environmental damage. As the company failed to prove the harm reduction that would have taken place, the sale of the latest iPhones was suspended in Brazil. submitted by /u/nextlevelpaulo to r/iphone [link] [comments]

AITA for deleting everything on a cell phone before giving it back to the “Owner”?
I (16f) decided things were not going great with my dads new family and decided to move in with my grandparents. On day 1 my Grammy bought me a new phone. She did this incase my new step mom or dad requested the old one back. I kept my old number, transferred all my data to my new phone. I even transferred the SIM card to the phone Grammy bought. I then decided to follow the instructions to reset the old phone to its original settings from the factory. I Put the phone inside a box with its charger. My dad didn’t bring up the phone when we spoke last. Or I could have just given it to him then. Early this morning. EARLY step mom showed up to Grammys house ringing the bell over and over again demanding my phone. Seriously they could have just asked for it when I spoke to my dad last time or come at a decent hour. When step mom demanded it Grammy let her know that she is not welcomed into the house and that we would bring it outside to her. Which sent my step mom on another rant. About How spoiled I was. I ran literally into my room. While Grammy was arguing with my step mom. I grabbed the phone and gave it to my step mom. Since step mom was standing outside. Grammy was standing inside the door. I quickly stepped inside and shut the door/ locking it. Step mom still flustered left. I decided to try and go back to sleep. Another 2 hrs passed when I got a message from a friend asking me to check my social media. When I did. I saw a post from my dads account. on my account calling me an A for setting my phone back to the original setting. It also went on how my Step mom needed the phone and now can’t use it. At the end of the post it said that I must be doing horrible things if I can’t allow even allow my own dad to see the messages. Followed with how disappointed my mom (she died) Must be. then listed several reasons why. Followed by some reply’s from my aunts and uncles calling an A. I screen shot the post and sent the ring video of my step mom to my dad’s cell phone, his personal email, and his office email. telling him that I want N/C. Lastly I sent it to my grandparents (dads parents) telling them I can’t have contact anymore because it’s too painful. Dragging my mom into this is too much. Along with seeing the comments on my dads post from family members on my dads side. Now that I am calming down some I am feeling bad about what happened. Am I the A for setting the phone back to the factory settings before giving it back to my step mom? Side note My Grammy said the post may not have been written by my dad. But, i don’t know it came from his account. Am I the A here? Did I over react? submitted by /u/Valuable-Giraffe-481 to r/AmItheAsshole [link] [comments]

Got a cell phone for my 14th birthday, sister freaked out she didn't get one too and stole it every chance she got, then bedazzled it
This all started on my 14th birthday. My dad took a day off work to host the party and all of my friends were invited over. We had fun playing video games, dancing to music, and eating junk food. Then came time for the presents. One of the presents from my dad was a brand new silver Gameboy Advance SP that had a copy of Golden Sun The Lost Age with it. My sister looked upset because prior to that she'd stolen a lot of money from me to buy her own GBA SP and dad punished her for it and cut her allowance in half to pay the money back to me. So she liked maliciously playing the GBA SP near me just to be petty and try and make me jealous. But it didn't work. And now I had a GBA SP too. That said, the true highlight of my 14th birthday was when my dad presented me with a Nokia cellphone that was all ready to use. He said I'd earned it for all the work I did for someone so young. I made my first call to his cellphone as a test right there and gleefully thanked dad for everything. My sister though, looked noticeably upset after I got the phone. She was initially doing ok during the party until gifts were opened. As soon as I got the cellphone she just frowned and stayed near Evil Mamabear. Then after we'd finished with the gifts it was time to eat cake. Normally we ate cake before the presents. But that year my dad was a bit more eager for me to open my gifts. When I was finally about to take my first bite of chocolate cake, my sister suddenly swatted the plastic fork right out of my hand and then knocked the plate I was eating from off the table. Then just ran out of the room. Dad got me another slice of cake and my parents ended up arguing. Apparently my sister had really been wanting a cellphone. And my getting one for my birthday triggered her. So my mother had the idea that Sis and I should just share the phone instead. But dad refused to allow that and said it was mine, and that I'd earned it. And if Sis wanted one sooner, then EMB could buy it and pay for the phone plan herself. That made her yell at him some more and storm out. And instead of punishing my sister for the tantrum she had, EMB just got her some ice cream and they didn't bother me for the rest of the party. A few days later before school I noticed my cellphone was missing. I asked EMB and my sister if either of them had seen it. But both of them brushed me off and said I probably lost it. So I got the house phone and called my own number. And when I heard it ringing, it was coming from my sister's backpack. Sis noticed this and tried to take off. But I stopped her by grabbing her backpack while she was wearing it. This made Evil Mamabear come running to yell at me. I told her Sis had taken my phone and I wanted it back. EMB said I was being dramatic. So I hit redial on the phone and Sis's backpack started ringing again. I then said I was gonna call dad if Sis didn't give the phone back. EMB growled at me and then made Sis open her backpack. I got the phone back and Sis called me an asshole before running off. I pointed out to EMB the language Sis used and she just shrugged and said that I was being an asshole. I asked her how, and she just rolled her eyes and said a good big brother should share. A few days later I couldn't find my phone again. Sis had taken it from it's charger in the living room and ran off with it to hang out with her friends. I called my own phone, but the second Sis heard my voice when she answered she just hung up. I called back one more time and she did the exact same thing. I was pissed. I knew my mother wouldn't have done anything about it. So I called my dad at work. He was mad and said he'd handle it when he got home. That evening when my dad and I got my phone back from my sister, we'd found she had bedazzled it with lots of colorful little plastic studs from a bedazzling kit she had from TOYS R' US. When dad took it back she screamed that classic bratty "IT'S MINE!" line at him, then kicked him in the leg and ran off to cry in her room. Thankfully all the bedazzling peeled right off and a little Goo Gone with some paper towels got rid of what was left of the sticker glue. Dad got in another fight with EMB about the phone and what Sis did to it. EMB kept trying to say it was supposed to be a shared item, but dad reminded her he got it for me, and that Sis bedazzling it was just a way to try and claim it for herself. Which was anything but sharing. He told her the phone was mine to do with as I pleased. And if Sis wanted one so bad, then EMB could buy one for her, end of discussion. Then Dad told me from then on I was allowed to charge my phone in my room instead of in the living room like we'd originally arranged. Sis didn't like that and I caught her trying to steal the phone from my room on more than one occasion. The first time she snuck in early in the morning before I was awake. But I did wake up when she opened my door and she froze like a deer in headlights for a moment when I turned my lamp on, and then ran off. Sis did manage to get the phone and run off with it a few more times. And she used it to talk to her friends as much as she possibly could. This put the phone plan well over my paid minutes and really upped the bill. My dad was furious about that. Sis tried to say that I was the one who used up all the minutes. But I pointed out I usually only used the phone when I needed it. Evil Mamabear tried to say it was no big deal until my dad shoved the bill in her face and said that since it was no big deal, then she could pay the bill for letting Sis keep taking my phone. EMB flipped out after seeing the total and they went back to fighting. In the end dad told EMB if Sis ever pulled that crap again, then she would be paying for the bill. From that moment on EMB actually kept my sister from taking my phone because she's always been a cheapskate and her own money was now involved in the matter. Any time Sis did manage to get my phone again EMB always begrudgingly forced her to give it back. I don't really know if Sis ever did get her own cellphone as a teenager because I moved out at 15 to live with my dad when my parents were divorcing. submitted by /u/Kragle-Tom to r/entitledparents [link] [comments]

LPT: Got a friend or family in the hospital? Consider giving them cozy blankets, soft socks, open toe slippers, book/eReader reader, long phone charger, and condiments for food instead of flowers.
Note: This is a repost to my previous submission that was removed for an undescriptive title. I was recently hospitalized for the first time in my adult life. This made me realize what I would have loved to have based on my six-night stay. Warm, comfortable blanket (microfleece)- Hospital HVACS systems may not offer local room temperature control but instead make coarse adjustments remotely. I was told they could only bump it up or down here at my VA hospital. Also, this was the first time I received an IV treatment and let me tell you they are cold... Had an IV in my forearm and it felt like a cooling coil and I am pretty convinced I could put a fan on it to air condition the room. Warm, comfortable socks- Reasons are similar to the blanket explanation. Maybe socks with gripping pads wouldn't be bad in case they walked on the tile without shoes. Credit: /u/Getitgirl007 mentioned that their family/friends had received socks from the hospital, so I followed up and asked my nurse about this. Turns out, the VA hospital does have socks available and my new RN was shocked that no one had offered them to me ¯_(ツ)_/¯ Condiments - I believe hospital food is designed to be lightly seasoned or bland as it may upset a patient's stomach. This problem might be compounded by medication. May have to be on the safe side and confer with the patient for what the could stomach safely. EDIT I recommended conferring with the patient assuming they would be informed of their dietary restrictions and abide by it. Generally, it would be wiser to consult with the RN or charge nurse regarding what they can have for consumption. Open toe slippers- Luckily I had flip flops on when I was unexpectedly admitted for my infection. Making short walks to the bathroom would have been a pain if I only had tennis shoes. Probably would of went barefoot in that case. Long, braided phone charger - My wife brought my 10 ft braided lightning cord and it was great. I can easily circumvent their expensive equipment and tuck it somewhere that wouldn't get in the nurse's way. I recommend braided because they tend to be more durable in my experience. Also, I am using a 5ft USB hub for my charger, the extra length is nice to have. Entertainment: A book, eReader, word games, or anything to help pass the time. The TV service may offer on-demand movies but the selection is slim and the hospital may charge for it as well depending on their administration. Another option might be to get your patient a google/apple card so they cam purchase some movies. If they might have trouble holding the phone for long durations then get a gooseneck cell phone holder that has a clamp connection so you can mount it to the bed. The gooseneck will offer a flexible but rigid structure so the patient can adjust it to their preference. EDIT /u/stjernDale recommended audiobooks. Great way to pass the time and not strain your eyes! Gift Cards: Credit: /u/1900grs, /u/HalftimeHeaters. Gift cards for local restaurants (especially with delivery service) and gas stations are terrific. Bonus LPT: /u/1900grs and myself would recommend avoiding flowers, balloons, and stuffed animal gifts for hospital patients. They take up quite a bit of valuable real-estate, make it difficult for hospital staff to work, and are a burden when you have to pack up for your discharge. This bonus LPT is intended for adult patients. Edit 1 Power Bank- /u/nintynineninjas recommended a power bank to charge your phone when you are unable to move. This was especially helpful for when they were locked down from holding their newborn. Edit 2 Eye Mask & Ear plugs - /u/Ruaidiri, /u/perpetuallywet, /u/SuedeVeil recommended these items due to minimizing the constant distractions or getting some much-needed rest. Especially useful for patients who are sharing rooms in the maternity ward. Moisturizers & Chapstick - /u/jessicasanj, /u/FatJennie, /u/bluephoto recommended these items. I will have to admit that my hands were getting pretty dry from constant washing. submitted by /u/genechem to r/LifeProTips [link] [comments]
