Discord account was hacked, put through a ticket, and my new account now needs phone verification. Im not able to recieve texts from discord for verification.
literally no idea what to do at this point. Old account was hacked, password must've gotten leaked Went and put on two factor changed passwords, but 6 hrs later they somehow were in it again (despite being assured every other session was logged out) Have since started a new discord account Put in a ticket with discord asking if they can kindly shut down the other account as it was completely compromised, and i had purposely set the 2factor up a second time, and then thrown away the key essentially, by disabling all related accounts and info. Accounts dead to me etc. I also kindly asked as i was moving over to the new account to possibly before the deletion of the old, get a list of friend id's off of the old so i can actually y'know reset up my account. They locked the new account instantly requiring cellphone verification. I am unable to cell phone verify, as they won't send me a text message. Que me going around in circles for hrs trying to get access to this new account, with them telling me the old account has the number attached, I'm timed out of receiving text messages etc. I LITERALLY HAVEN'T RECEIVED A SINGLE TEXT VERIFICATION. I CAN'T VERIFY IF I DON'T GET THE MESSAGE. So now im stuck with a dead hacked account prompting mr beast giveaways, and in addition the new account i made, is currently stuck in complete limbo and cannot be used. Fun (Side note, the new account i made, had a person from my prior account banned, despite the account only being made today which is REALLY GODAMN WEIRD. i only know because i blocked the hacked account and went through settings to try and report them.) submitted by /u/Maelstrom100 to r/discordhelp [link] [comments]

Uber Account hacked after a phone simswap
Last year I had my cell phone simswapped. As result and because of MFA the people were able to hack my Uber account. The charges made to my account were in a currency I don't recognize from a country my bank says was in the Carribean where I've never been when I got them to stop the charges. The remaining problem is that there is nearly a thousand dollars sitting on my Uber account that they refuse to fix. I've tried their customer service online chat and I get nowhere. Now I can't use Uber at all because they have denied me access to my account and frozen access to the app. I've even given them the police file number for my case. Does anyone have an idea what I can do to fix this, or have a telephone number where at least I can talk to a human? I'm in Canada. submitted by /u/Classic-Emu-3998 to r/uber [link] [comments]

The back of my Samsung Galaxy A15 5G, SM-S156V cell phone, is peeling off. Is it a swollen battery? Can I make a copy of all the data to transfer to a new phone?
Hi everyone, The pics that accompany this post are of my Samsung Galaxy A15 5G, SM-S156V cell phone, with the back of the right edge "bent" (?) by the power button. *Please note: if the subreddit I am posting to does not allow uploading photos, you may see the photos at this safe "https://" link to a safe Google Photo Album containing the pics at: https://photos.app.goo.gl/drmMY793yMbajVLz5. There was no "accident" that preceded this, such as dropping the cell phone onto a hard surface, such as a floor, etc. I know from my research that a bent back of a cell phone could be caused by a swollen battery pushing the casing apart, which is dangerous and requires immediate action. Can anyone determine, by examining the pics, if a swollen battery is likely my issue? Probably my main concern here is saving my data before getting another cell phone. This cell phone literally has my whole life on it (in terms of data) for the past two years. I used to have an iPhone that was part of a massive and seemingly well-coordinated multi-device hacking attack. They hacked into my two PCs, my iPhone, my mother's iPhone, and even our router. When I finally figured it out, they had destroyed all of my data on both computers and wiped both my and my mother's phones clean. It was a true nightmare. When I replaced the cell phones, I went with Androids. I did get a laptop about a year and a half ago (it is Windows 10 OS) but haven't been motivated to set it up and use it (I think because of the fear of being hacked again). I literally do everything on my Android (using mobile data), and I have to admit I hate being "Android only" (with all of the limitations this brings) more and more each month that goes by. I did buy an external HDD that I may hook up to my Android and manually back up files. In fact, I did back up my complete Android onto a directory on my external HDD. I believe I was even able to copy the files in the "Android" folder on the phone without incident. Do you suppose if I get a new Android, I could do another full backup of the phone first and then just copy the files in the backed-up folder onto the new Android and have everything work—or is this just "wishful thinking" on my part? I would greatly appreciate any comments, advice, feedback (good or bad), sharing of personal experiences (good or bad), and opinions, as well as any "hacks" or "workarounds" for this situation. Thank you so much. submitted by /u/loyalcaregiver to r/fixit [link] [comments]

Multi-Factor Verification on personal cell phone?
My school district says every single person needs to set up multi factor authentication so that when we log into our school computer, we get an additional form of protection. I and some others are leery of having anything to do with the school and our personal cell phones being connected due to hacking, phishing, etc.. Has anyone else been instructed to do this? I don’t really want to use my personal device. submitted by /u/NaturalTranslator581 to r/Teachers [link] [comments]

In the documentary The Core, DJ Quall's character hacks a cell phone using a gum wrapper and says "You now have free long distance on this phone. Forever." That phone is probably still working and making long distance calls, while I sit here like a sucker only using mine after 9 and on the weekends.

Circumstance has radicalised me
Three weeks ago my small town's cell towers went down for repairs - when I looked for signal bars on my phone all it said was "EMERGENCY CALLS ONLY." until like 8pm, then I'd get one bar. Started up again at 4am, for the whole day, for weeks. Also during this time, a lightning strike very close to my house fried my DSL internet line. Modem wouldn't turn on and the clear, plastic phone jack from the wall was scorched black. It may as well have been the 1600s - I had to drive into town to connect to free town wifi to hear news about literally anything - society, family, whatever. This entire time I spent thinking about how I was paying for all these services I couldn't access - Netflix, Amazon Prime, Steam games, Epic Store games, Google storage, Xbox live, Spotify and that had me thinking about the nature of ownership. If I am paying for something but can't use it and don't technically own it, then pirating is no longer stealing because ownership has been removed from the equation. I'm not pirating to access the content, I'm pirating to access the content I'm paying for anytime I like which is not a luxury that comes with the price tag. My biggest issue here is Steam. At any point Steam could decide to not host these games anymore, or if Steam goes down to hacking or if the company goes under I'm out thousands of dollars spent on games. I don't own these games and that makes me fucking furious. While I was disconnected from the world as described above, I couldn't play some of my games because I hadn't logged in recently enough to "refresh" offline mode. How much shittier does everything have to get for us all, en masse, to say that this way of doing everything just fucking sucks? Edit: Boy there's some weird bootlicking energy here. I underestimated how frustrated people that come to this community must be, and how easily that frustration could be directed at... someone else who is also feeling frustrated by the shitty system we've created. submitted by /u/Verdukians to r/Anticonsumption [link] [comments]

A short PSA for basic office etiquette
Now that most of us are back in the office, could we maybe remember how to practice basic etiquette? Current example in my cube farm… guy behind me is having a personal conversation on his cell phone, and the phone is on speaker. I don’t want to hear your conversation, bro… Yesterday a lady in the row adjacent to mine was almost literally hacking up a lung with her cough. Maybe don’t come in if you’re sick? EDIT TO SAY: I hear you on the coughing, it’s not always as simple as a sick day. I’ve dealt with sinus infections for years so I get it. But if I’m coughing the way this lady was yesterday, my ass would be going home lol. That’s all I can say. And I’m not sure she’s in today, so hopefully she’s recovering! yay office life 😫 submitted by /u/PomegranateBright914 to r/fednews [link] [comments]

Cops blew up son's door
Recently, a swatting event occurred in our town. Phone call from swatter caused all schools in the area to engage in lockdowns. Somehow, and apparently completely at random (although likely a hack) my son's name was mentioned as the shooter or brains behind the alleged attack. (Apparently, since we have not been given access to the recording or transcript of the "phone call.") Cops figured out his address and arrived within a half hour. He was not home; he drives a truck and was 1000 miles and three states away. Within a half hour SWAT teams and deputies showed up from multiple jurisdictions and tried to get him to exit with a bullhorn. Again, he was not home. They proceeded to use explosives to remove his door, then entered and tore the place up looking for him, and guns and/or drugs. Allegedly. At the very same moment cops were throwing his furniture into windows (neighbor's recording timestamp) more cops showed up on his mother's doorstep asking for his phone number. At the exact same moment a cop called me on my cell looking for his number. This was AFTER/DURING the time period when they were ransacking his home Can anyone explain the logic of this sequence? They almost gave his mom a heart attack when she figured out what they were fishing for but couldn't tell her. (We were well aware of the school lockdowns through texts from the school district). They could have waited a minute and found his number. Called us first to find it. Called the landlord of the property to gain key entrance. Called his employer. Etc. etc. But no they blew off his door, smashed windows, left a huge mess and gave his cat a stroke. Left his home unsecured for hours with a twisted door in the yard. Mom almost passed out but declined the ambulance they offered. Confiscated his computer and have not returned it, even though within hours they publicly announced it was a hoax. I am beyond pissed. This has to be leaps and bounds past protocol and competence into the Land of Keystone Cops, right? submitted by /u/Vendingdudes1111 to r/legal [link] [comments]

YSK Declining spam calls is as bad as answering them
Why YSK: Most of the spam call centers are using some form of auto-dialing system that just iterates through random phone numbers. The primary goal is that someone answers and engages with whatever scam they're running i.e IRS, car warranty, Amazon purchase or whatever. However, the system also tracks anytime someone declines the call because that means it is a legitimate person's cell phone number as opposed to an out-of-service number or an office line. By declining, your number ends up in a database for future calls that can be more targeted or persistent. The robo-caller groups frequently use this as a secondary revenue stream by selling the list of confirmed numbers to more sophisticated scammers. This also applies to "replying STOP" to scam text messages. By ignoring it altogether, you don't provide the system any information and they're less likely to try your number again in the future. TL;DR Just let calls from unknown numbers ring instead of declining and just delete spam text messages. Don't let them know you're real. Edit: Didn't think this would garner so much attention, but glad people are finding it useful or interesting! You should absolutely still block the number and/or "mark as spam" after the fact, but it's important to know that these groups have the capability of spoofing what phone number they're calling from. If you've ever seen a call from a number that is eerily similar to your own, you've seen this in practice. Their algorithms have shown that for some reason people are more likely to answer if the number seems familiar or looks local. As for the many comments about voicemail, it does let them know it is a valid number but they aren't listening to the message. Declining confirms for them that it is a mobile phone number which is a higher value target than a business or land line. This for several reasons but the big ones are that a mobile phone has more presence and thus more opportunity and many software platforms allow you to use your phone number for your login credentials making it usable in standard brute force hacking attempts. submitted by /u/LeadingTrevize to r/YouShouldKnow [link] [comments]

The cell phone bill, the girl in every port, and the naive wife
The time, circa 2009 The place, a call center handling billing disputes for a major US cell phone carrier I handled billing disputes and customer complaints, when someone thought that there was a problem with their account, that charges were fraudulent, when people thought SOMETHING was wrong with their bill that they were sure wasn't their fault. This meant we got some interesting calls and unique claims. Even a decade later, this one stands out. A lady called in, saying her husband's phone was malfunctioning, that or the towers in a few towns were fraudulently billing her husband's phone for calls he wasn't making while he was driving near them. That's pretty much unheard of, if not outright impossible, so I prodded for more information while pulling up the account. She said that her husband is a truck driver, who drives a route from Kansas City up to Winnipeg and back along I-29 several times a week. She was looking at the cell phone bill and noticed her husband was getting roaming charges on his phone. This was before unlimited roaming, and when some more rural areas didn't have good phone coverage. Sure enough, she looked at the bill, and most times he drove by this town, either way, he'd get a call billed from his phone to a number, always the same number, and it was in a roaming area so there would be a small charge for the call. I looked at the bill, I saw the same charges. I looked back at previous months bills, same charges, going back for months, a couple of times a week there was a call to this number passing through this small town along I-29 in South Dakota. Then she says she's talked to the wives of other truckers in the trucking company, and their husbands are apparently getting the same calls billed to their phone. Some on other phone companies aren't having them billed as roaming, but calls to that number are coming through when they pass through too. She said she dialed the number and a young woman answered who said she has no idea who her husband is, or any of those men, and is as confused as anyone else is by all this and said she has nothing to do with this. Uh huh. She insists this is some nefarious phone malfunction, or someone is hacking the cell towers to have the towers bill phones for calls they aren't making. Well. That's NOT the conclusion I'm coming to. However, we're told to NOT call customers liars, or imply they are misleading anyone. So, I can't tell her what seems screamingly obvious to me. So I offer to block the number from the phone, telling her I can have it blocked as if it was harassment, and that no phone on the account would be able to dial that number any more. I suggested she have the other wives do that as well. She agreed. I told her I couldn't remove the charges though. She was slightly grumpy about that, but I told her that if charges for calls to that number ever reappeared, we'd take them off since they were supposed to be blocked, and to not hesitate to call us again if she wanted to block other numbers that mysteriously appeared on her husbands phone while he was passing through that area. She seemed to accept that. I sometimes wonder at the level of willful blindness that woman had. submitted by /u/MyUsername2459 to r/talesfromcallcenters [link] [comments]

"I prefer lemons." Was the mysterious cell-phone harassment and surveillance of several people in Fircrest, WA a terrifying hack, or a teenage hoax? (2007) [Unexplained Phenomena]
It began innocuously. 16-year-old Courtney Kuykendall received texts from her friends one night in 2007 asking why she had simply texted them the word “gay.” Courtney hadn’t texted “gay” at anyone, so was somewhat confused. Pretty forgettable, except for what came next. Before long, Courtney and her friends and family were receiving relentless, threatening texts and phone calls from an unknown figure that they came to call “Restricted,” after the name that appeared on their Caller ID when these calls came through. Restricted said that he was going to kill them, rape them, kill their pets, attack their school. The messages came around the clock, to the family’s landline as well as their cell phones. Switching their phones, getting new accounts, and turning the phones off didn’t seem to help at all. Once, while Courtney and another victim were explaining the situation in the presence of a police officer, their phones turned themselves on and called each other. When the police got involved, they traced the threatening messages back to Courtney’s own phone – which seemed to be able to send messages and make calls even when it was turned off. When the Kuykendalls got home from meeting with law enforcement, they had a voicemail that consisted of a recording of the conversation they had had only hours earlier. They took Courtney’s phone away, but the calls just kept coming. Even more alarmingly, Restricted seemed to be able to see them, even inside their own home. When they got a new security system keypad for their home, they received a call moments later from Restricted, saying that he knew the passcode. Sometimes he would comment on their clothing. The quintessential quote from this case is from Andrea McKay, who was cutting limes on the counter when she received a message from Restricted: I prefer lemons. One night, someone even banged on the side of the Kuykendall house and ran off. Blocking the camera lenses with tape and removing the phones’ batteries didn’t seem to help. Courtney, her family, and the other victims of the harassment were terrified. The cops were baffled. There seemed to be no way to hide away from where their phones could hear and see… or to avoid what Restricted wanted to say. Aaaaand that’s kind of where the whole story trails off, which is exasperating. I have found some resources that indicate that the FBI became involved and the calls stopped around that time, but very little follow-up on this story from any of the media outlets that were so eager to cover the initial mystery. (It was right around when the first iPhone came out, which I think didn’t hurt the popularity of the story.) If the case was officially solved, it was not discussed publicly by law enforcement or by the victims. Having read many, many iterations of the same article from when this story peaked, I want to clarify one thing - many articles refer to the victims as “three families,” which can make it sound like this was three unrelated groups of people. It was Courtney Kuykendall and family, her slightly older (married, living with her husband in a different house) sister and family, and Courtney’s friend who lived across the street and family. At least one other friend of Heather’s also said that her phone’s ringtone changed without her involvement to a guttural voice saying “answer your phone,” but she tends not to get included in the count. So what the hell happened here? Obviously, most people jump to a hoax, and Courtney tends to get the lion’s share of the blame – I mean, not only was it her phone, but she was a pretty blonde teenager who got to go on national TV with this exciting story. Courtney’s rebuttal was, “Why would I do that to people I care about? Why would I harass my own family?” For what it’s worth, her mother also was adamant that Courtney was not involved. Some argue that Restricted was using some kind of hack or virus to control the phones, possibly with inside help from either a deliberate confederate (e.g., someone who could smuggle their family member’s phone out to Restricted for some hands-on fuckery) or a clueless accomplice (e.g., a theory that Courtney kept re-infecting her new phone by visiting her MySpace page). I am not a tech person, but discussions online seem to range from “turning on a phone and having it send messages/make calls without being in the room with it is very possible” to “in 2007, that would have been some military-grade technology and very hard to pull off without having physical access to it at some point.” But for what it’s worth, the family did live close to McChord Air Force Base, and Courtney’s brother-in-law worked there. In fact, he received a Restricted text at one point that said, “McChord needs us.” At least one skeptic online has also pointed out that you don’t have to either hang the entire story on “spooky phone can see you cutting up limes with its all-seeing lens” vs. “utter hoax.” There are some more low-tech approaches that enable you to make sinister statements about someone’s meal prep or how their shirt looks, such as looking through the damn window or texting with someone who is in the next room from your victim. One law enforcement officer suggested that they might have a “tech-savvy teenage boy” in their neighborhood who was doing this. Sure, or a kid who lives in the neighborhood – or even across the street – and can creep on people the old-fashioned way. At this point I’m wondering, did any of it actually happen? Almost every one of the technological wonders ascribed to Restricted and the cell phones is based on the report of one of the victims. Even the “the phones turned themselves on while the police officer was sitting right there” and the “we had a voicemail recording of ourselves talking to the cops” stories are based purely on what the families say. If the police officer who saw the phones turn themselves on was around in 2007, he didn’t make any statements on the record. If you’ve ever gotten a pocket dial from someone or have accidentally opened your camera app when pulling your phone out of your pocket, you’re aware that we don’t exactly spend much of our lives in situations where our phones can record nice clean audio or have a good view of what we’re doing – all the less so in 2007, when watching Hulu on your screen while you fixed dinner wasn’t an option. As far as I can tell, nobody’s ever confessed, and there was no big resolution – just the FBI getting involved and the calls stopping. The media got very excited about this story, which let them make excited noises about cyber-bullying as well as the mysterious sexy power of cell phones and how they’re just such a part of our lives all the time, much like the new iPhone, coming out now! And then they lost interest, and moved on. What seems likely to you? Are there similar cases that provide insight as to what the culprit may have been like? Has your own phone ever done something like this? Articles: Cell hack geek stalks pretty blonde shocker Stalker Terrorizes Family Via Cell Phone? "After my speech exposing Hillary Clinton's connection to the Shadow Government, both our cell phones have ben bugged (confirmed by an expert), our CCTVs remotely shut down, our Internet accounts hacked and we had an intruder at 6:00 am yesterday. This is starting to get fun." -- @Kevin_Shipp
