What ceramide cream are you using for daily skin barrier support?
I feel like every time someone asks about barrier repair, it always ends up being the same handful of answers like CeraVe, La Roche-Posay, and Illiyoon. Not saying they’re bad, but it gets repetitive and I’m not sure which ones are actually worth sticking with long term. My skin barrier is kinda messed up right now from overdoing actives and my face feels tight after washing even with gentle cleanser. Some days it’s flaky but still oily at the same time which is confusing. I’m looking for a moisturizer with ceramides that actually helps repair and not just sit on top of the skin. Something that feels like it’s doing more than just basic hydration. I don’t mind if it’s light or a bit rich as long as it calms the irritation and doesn’t break me out. Budget is flexible but I’d rather not go straight to the expensive “luxury derm” ones if there are solid midrange options that do the same job. submitted by /u/Majestic_Rainbow96 to r/tretinoin [link] [comments]

Lanolips Ceramide Milkshake Balms & Swatches
L-R: Strawberry Bubble, Raspberry Crumble, Caramel Melt, Mocha Choca They all smell really good. The Strawberry reminds me of Bath & Body Works Strawberry Pound Cake. This is the lightest pink. The Raspberry is very similar in scent to the Strawberry and is a medium pink colour. The Caramel smells like a burnt caramel and is a brownish-pink. The image on the box is of a lighter brownish colour. The Mocha smells like coffee and is a dark pink. The image on the box makes it look like it is a brownish colour so I was pleasantly surprised to see that it isn’t. The formula is not as thick as the original Lanolips ointments, which is fine as they are still fairly thick without any stickiness and add a subtle touch of colour. submitted by /u/rileydaisydoggywoggy to r/LipBalm [link] [comments]

Holiest of holy holy grails (now with more details)
Sorry my first post got taken down cause I got too excited and didn’t write enough about this amazing product. Have been using almost daily for 2 years. Skin type/concerns: dry, sensitive, eczematous, hormonal acne on chin but am now medicated for this Climate: London, UK - dry compared to where I’m from (Hong Kong) Product: Hada Labo Gokujun Premium Hyaluronic Acid Beauty Essence + 8 refill packs - purchased this in HK for £5-6 per 170mL refill (available on UK Amazon for £12-14, Stylevana £6-9) - texture is syrupy and is used as a toner, does not absorb very quickly unless you use a small amount, but lovely to layer at night and will leave you like a glazed donut Routine (cleanse + toner + moisturize +/- SPF, I rarely use actives due to sensitivity) *edit- I use toner/lotion/essence interchangeably, I apply with bare hands and pat the product on my face, never with cotton pads as that irritates my skin too - AM: Cerave hydrating cleanser, drop of Hada Labo premium (it spreads really well), Naturie Hatomugi gel or milk depending on how my skin feels, Anessa SPF 50 gold tube gel or gold top milk or pink top sensitive milk - PM: double cleanse with oil and gel cleanser (this is currently Fancl and Cerave foaming), Hada Labo premium about a coin size amount, Illiyoon ceramide ato cream or Pyunkang Yul Intensive Repair Cream but if eczema is flaring I jump to La Roche Posay Cicaplast Balm after Hada Labo 1 Hada Labo refill will last me and my partner about 2-3 months depending on what other toners we are trying out but we always default to this one. Let me know if you want reviews of other products I mentioned above! submitted by /u/vixie3 to r/AsianBeauty [link] [comments]

I think my skin is still burned after months - cocokind ceramide barrier serum completely burned my skin in seconds months back. Please tell me how to fix my skin I’m begging!
I am 26f, and I wanted to try a new serum out of curiosity because I heard tons of People with sensitive skin love this serum. My fault for not patch testing but the way it was marketed, I really thought it would soothe or at least be good on my skin. I have very dry and VERY sensitive skin. I get rosacea and eczema has only really appeared during cold stark winter days (live on the east coast) and tend to get tons of cystic acne on my chin only during my period. When my face stings in the past from being dry I lather it with my fav serum (cicafilate + serum from avene or the thermal water from the same company) Prior to the face burn, I used a lot of kbeauty so it would be a rotation between round lab gel cream, and skin1004 cleansing oil (morning) + their foam cleanser at night followed by their face cream. My skin enjoyed those products a lot. But post face burn I couldn’t use those because it stung so bad and I’m So afraid to again. As I’ve said, the burn happened in Nov of last year, but I still get major stinging sensation and burning feeling on my face. Post burn, I only use the vanicream cleansing bar on my face to wash it night and day and the big tub of moisturizing cream they have and it’s been fine. I also use personal day hypochlorus spray here and there when I have a cystic acne flare up but do find it drying. I tried to re introduce the cicafilate serum recently but it seems maybe I still can’t. The cystic acne came back worse for weeks, and now it’s kind of just sitting under the skin. I have such a hard time not popping the white heads when they come up though. After cleansing my face with the vanicream bar tonight, I put the same cream (vanicream) I put a lot on because my face is so dry but I noticed my face got hot quick and this is the aftermath. It’s really red and the other days lately it’s been the same. I went to a dermatologist to see if he could help me and he said vanicream was OK and to keep up with it. But then he told me to use done sensitive skin bar (I didn’t) because I was already using vanicream and that didn’t burn me. He didn’t have any idea what any of the kbeauty products were that I was using and kind of ignored me when I showed him what I used prior to the burn. Also without letting me know / asking me if he can - he started to crunch my hair and look around for dandruff which he said I had and prescribed me metro cream to use only but didn’t explain why or what it was for. I didn’t go back because he was far away but he also creeped me out (I had a tank top on under my sweater and he had to see me in my tank to check out a raised mole and he seemed weirdly happy to see me in the tank top and it was just very creepy. I love avene cicafilate+ line but maybe my skin needs to become more healed? Post burn, I just washed my face with water for 4 weeks and it was still stinging like it Is now. All this being said HOW can I fix my skin!! I can’t afford a derm because I lost my good insurance. Please help me. submitted by /u/Mission_Remote_6319 to r/FragranceFreeBeauty [link] [comments]

Replacement for Illiyoon Ceramide ATO Cream
I tried the new formulation for almost a month now and I do not like it! It doesn’t feel like it absorbs into the skin, not as hydrating, and has a plastic smell when you first apply it. I only have 1 bottle left before it was reformulated and wanted to look for alternatives! I’ve tried Curel Intensive Moisture Cream prior to Illiyoon. Can’t try Aestura due to niacinamide. My skin also hates ferments, propolis, and centella. Not sure what else is out there that is similar to Illiyoon’s old formulation. submitted by /u/chikynuggiez to r/AsianBeauty [link] [comments]

Chem major here. Let’s talk about ceramides for real
One of the biggest things I learned after graduating with a chemistry degree: skincare structures are actually way simpler than the marketing makes them seem. Our skin barrier is basically bricks (corneocytes) held together by lipids, and about 50% of those lipids are ceramides. Think of ceramides as the cement filling the gaps between the bricks. When we say "my skin barrier is damaged" it usually means ceramide levels have dropped. Less ceramide means water escapes more easily and irritants get in easier. That's why sensitive skin flares up. Instead of piling on fancy actives when things go wrong it makes more sense to rebuild the barrier first with ceramides. You can check if a product actually has ceramides by looking at the ingredient list (a lot of "ceramide" claims have tiny amounts or none at all). I'm currently using Illiyoon Ceramide Ato Cream and I think it's one of the best value ceramide creams out there. Reddit recommends it a ton for a reason. The texture is nice and neutral so I end up suggesting it to friends looking for a basic barrier cream. I've never had it fail on me. The cream gives the most solid results but if you want something lighter try the AMPLE:N Ceramide Shot Ampoule or TonyMoly Wonder Ceramide Toner. Both focus on barrier strengthening with ceramides so they're less heavy than a cream but still deliver the benefits when you want hydration without thickness. submitted by /u/Miserable-Success151 to r/kbeauty [link] [comments]

i messed up my routine and broke out for a year. daily tret + ceramides fixed it ✨
daily tret and proper hydration finally fixed my skin after a year of breakouts! this is gonna be a long story, but i’ll try my best not to take too much of your time! i decided to post it here because even though i’m not a frequent poster or commenter on this sub, it has been my most visited sub over the last year. i’ve been dealing with acne since my teenage years (i’m 27 now) and i’ve been on tret since 2022, prescribed by my dermatologist. i wasn’t on reddit back then, but my skin was great and i had no idea this community existed or how loved tret is around the world lol the story i want to tell starts at the end of 2024. i had started working and earning a bit more money, so i thought it would be a great idea to mess with my routine and experiment with asian skincare because it definitely works wonders and it would be good for me, right???? wrong. i was so freaking wrong. so i bought the skin1004 centella asiatica serum and it gave me closed comedones and the worst breakout i’d had in years. i panicked because i had already been on isotretinoin before and had been maintaining my skin really well with just tret. suddenly i was breaking out again and nothing seemed to work. it turned into a long year of stopping and starting tret because it suddenly made me purge, changing a lot of my products, and even thinking i had fungal acne. i spent so much money and was miserable most days. i don’t have many pictures from that time because i hated looking at my skin and didn’t want to document it :( now, what actually worked for me: i read so many posts on this sub and started really paying attention to my skin, even “talking” to it lol, trying to understand what it needed, and i figured out it needed hydration! when i finally added a moisturizer with ceramides into my routine, everything changed. after that, i was able to go back to daily tret because i stopped flaking and pilling. the first three days of daily tret were really scary. it gave me a small purge, but i kept listening to my skin. for the first time in a long time it wasn’t dehydrated thanks to illiyoon, and it wasn’t burning red either, so i kept going. then one day i woke up and my skin was clear. just like that. i know it’s not perfect, but i’ve had great results with azelaic acid and tret and i finally feel comfortable in my skin again!!!! 😭😭😭 daily tret changed everything for me. so if you’re thinking about trying it, keep moisturizing and go for it! i’m also sharing my simple routine and some pics! submitted by /u/zasshumu to r/tretinoin [link] [comments]

I cannot believe the difference from 24 days ago thanks to asking for advice!
I came asking for help with all the fine lines on my face and you guys delivered! I didn’t realize just how dehydrated my face was and that I was due for some changes in routine. I wasn’t expecting my skin to change so much already (I’m 33) but clearly I needed some changes! I’m so thankful for this group 🤍 New routine: So I cleanse at night only and then I do all the other steps both morning and night. At night I’ve been slugging with aquaphor but I’ve gone down to only 2-3 days a week for that now. La roche posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Face Cleanser for Dry Skin Milky toner from Paula’s choice The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 Hydrating Serum with Ceramides Then at night for moisturizer I’m using CALM Rescue & Repair Intensive Moisturizer Paula’s choice Morning moisturizer is Pro-Collagen Peptide Plumping Moisturizer I use DRMTGLY tinted moisturizer with spf but it’s been pilling lately with the new changes so I think I’m going to be on the hunt for another one. Id like to work retinol back in eventually but I’m scared because I think that was one of the products that messed up my barrier in the first place 🤷🏻♀️ submitted by /u/weddingaccount060417 to r/30PlusSkinCare [link] [comments]

Ceramides & Skin Barrier Repair: What Actually Works
Your skin barrier is like a brick wall. Dead skin cells are the bricks, and ceramides are 50% of the mortar holding everything together. When that mortar breaks down, water escapes and irritants get in. Here's how to fix it. How to Know Your Barrier is Damaged: Products that used to be fine now sting or burn. Tightness after cleansing (even with gentle products) Flakiness that moisturizer doesn't fix Skin feels tight AND oily at the same time Increased breakouts Redness that won't calm down Moisturizer absorbs instantly but doesn't last Common causes: Over-exfoliation, retinol irritation, harsh cleansers (high pH 9-10), cold weather with indoor heating (20% humidity destroys barriers). Stop using: All retinoids AHAs and BHAs High-strength vitamin C Fragrance and essential oils Harsh cleansers (SLS/SLES) How to Repair: Ceramides alone don't work well. They need cholesterol and fatty acids to form proper protective layers. Look for products with all three: Multiple ceramide types (Ceramide NP, AP, EOP) Cholesterol (must be listed in ingredients) Fatty acids or phytosphingosine During barrier repair: Apply to damp skin (absorbs 4x better) Use twice daily, morning and night Layer: hydrating toner, ceramide cream, occlusive at night Continue for 4-6 weeks minimum Good to combine with: Niacinamide 2-5% (boosts natural ceramide production) Hyaluronic acid Panthenol Centella asiatica Stop the damage (pause actives, gentle cleanser only), use complete lipid replacement (ceramides + cholesterol + fatty acids), and stick with it for 4-6 weeks. Illiyoon, Aestura, Torriden, Round Lab, etc. are gold standards in their categories, but any product with multiple ceramides + the right co-factors will work. Your barrier can recover. Give it time and the right ingredients. submitted by /u/SkinSeoul_Team to r/skinseoul [link] [comments]

Review: Illiyoon Ceramide Ato Lotion?
Skin type: Dry Skin concerns: Very dry patches that get flaky if I scratch or rub too much, occasional irritation/redness, barrier issues in winter Climate: Los Angeles – it’s generally mild but the air is super dry right now, especially with heaters on Current routine (very minimal): Cleanser: Hada Labo Gokujyun Hyaluronic Acid Cleansing Foam (Japanese, gentle and doesn’t strip) Toner: COSRX Hydrium Watery Toner (hydrating, calming, and super light) FULLY Green Tomato Acid 20 Serum Serum: Beauty of Joseon Glow Serum (propolis + niacinamide – for a bit of soothing and brightness) Moisturizer: Morning : Illiyoon Ceramide Ato Lotion (the one I’m reviewing) Night(Before Sleep) : D'alba Piedmont Italian White Truffle Double Serum & Cream Scent: Completely unscented – no fragrance at all, which I really appreciate. Texture: Lightweight lotion, slightly milky, spreads easily and absorbs quickly without any sticky residue. Why I bought it: I kept seeing it recommended on Reddit for damaged barriers and dry, sensitive skin. I needed something simple and effective for winter that wouldn’t feel heavy but would actually hydrate. Length of use: About 6 weeks daily (morning and night). Results: My skin feels noticeably less tight after cleansing. Dry, flaky patches on my cheeks and around my nose have calmed down a lot – they used to turn white when I scratched, but that happens way less now. Overall barrier feels stronger; redness from dryness has improved. No breakouts or irritation – it layers nicely under makeup too. Pros: Excellent hydration for a lotion texture – lasts all day in dry air. Truly fragrance-free and gentle. Great price for the size (big pump bottle). Non-greasy finish. Cons: In extremely cold/dry days, I still need to layer a thicker cream on top at night for extra protection. Pump can dispense a little too much if you’re not careful. Would I repurchase? Yes, definitely. I love Illiyoon Ceramide Ato Lotion. It’s become my everyday winter moisturizer and I already have a backup. For dry, easily irritated skin in a dry climate, it’s been reliable and fuss-free. Has anyone else with similar dry/flaky concerns tried this lotion? How does it compare to the Concentrate Cream version for you? submitted by /u/groomingboy to r/AsianBeauty [link] [comments]

I’m extremely confused… can someone please explain lol
Was picking up some groceries at my local Kroger this evening (I live on the east coast in the US) and saw that they’ve randomly added a Korean skincare section. Ok cool! Unexpected but I obviously love that Kbeauty is becoming more easily accessible at places like Ulta and Target etc - my main question is how the hell are they selling the Korean formula of the Beauty of Joseon sunscreen? The filters in the OG formula are, to my knowledge, not FDA approved, which is why we get stuck with the god awful US reformulations sold at Sephora and the like, but I triple checked the packaging and ingredients, this is not the US formulation, no “broad spectrum” to be found and the INCI list is identical to the OG Korean formula. Can someone explain this to me? I’m extremely confused! submitted by /u/hillary_____k to r/AsianBeauty [link] [comments]

Ceramides not suitable for oily acne-prone skin?
Seriously I'm trying to incorporate a ceramide containing moisturizer but I'm repeatedly getting an acne pop up on my cheeks (which are acne prone parts). I've used 2 brands but honestly now I'm even scared to try any more. Been thinking of just switching back to my older plain moisturizer. Has anyone faced the same issue with ceramide moisturizers? Also will be helpful if anyone can suggest products that have suited them for a similar skin type (without silicones if possible) submitted by /u/girl_in_red_tiara to r/AsianBeauty [link] [comments]

Forehead wrinkles before & after (9 months progress)
I just realised it's been 9 months between these two photos, and I had to share because I'm honestly so happy with the progress. 😊 In my late 20s, I started noticing wrinkles forming on my forehead. Once I hit 30, I embarked on the mission to get rid of them. I have dry and sensitive skin, so the first step for me was fixing my skin barrier. Once I focused on hydration and barrier support first, everything else started to fall into place. For anyone interested, here’s the routine I followed: Morning: Cleanser: The Ordinary, Glucoside Foaming Cleanser Serum: The Ordinary, Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 Moisturizer: The Ordinary, Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA Ceramides: COSRX, Comfort Ceramide Cream SPF: Beauty of Joseon, Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics SPF 50+ PA++++ Night Make-up remover: Bioderma, Atoderm Soothing Lipid Replenishing Cleansing Oil Cleanser: The Ordinary, Glucoside Foaming Cleanser Serum: The Ordinary, Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 Active days (rotating): Day 1: The Ordinary, Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion Day 2: The Ordinary, Vitamin C Suspension 23% + HA Spheres 2% Day 3: Nothing, just hydration Moisturizer: The Ordinary, Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA Ceramides: COSRX, Comfort Ceramide Cream submitted by /u/Mean-Quality-8056 to r/Skincare_Addiction [link] [comments]

Ceramides: Maybe the most important ingredient to keep your skin healthy while using Tretinoin
I feel like not enough people know the importance of ceramides so I wanted to make this post to help educate! The skin barrier- Ceramides are an essential component of your skin barrier. The skins moisture barrier wasn’t talked about a ton until recently and as a community we’re slowly realizing how important it is. When you damage your skin barrier with actives, alcohols, physical exfoliants, etc, it’s easier for chemicals, bacteria, and pathogens(1) to penetrate your skin which can lead to more irritation, the destruction of collagen, and acne. (This is one of the reasons you see so much perfect skin in Asia. Eastern beauty tends to focus much more on maintaining a healthy barrier, rather than treating existing issues like western skincare tends to focus on) A dysfunctional barrier is also the cause of dehydrated skin which is different from dry skin. Dehydrated skin occurs when the fat layer on our skin is not strong enough to hold in the hydration underneath it, so our skin goes through more trans epidermal water loss (TEWL)(4) which is basically the evaporation of water off our skin. This can cause an uncomfortable tight feeling, more pronounced fine lines & wrinkles, and it can be frustrating when you’re applying plenty of humectants but they don’t seem to be doing anything. Why you should care- This is especially important when using tretinoin. Tretinoin, like any other active, has the potential to damage your skin barrier(2), especially when just starting out. One study even concluded that people go through the retinization period faster and better when they use barrier repairing ingredients before even starting tretinoin.(3) Whenever you look up how to repair your skin barrier, ceramides will be first on the list. The lipids that comprise your skin barrier are made up of 50% ceramides, that means when your skin barrier is damaged, the ceramides are the most likely to be lacking.(4) But ceramides are not only important for barrier function(5), they play a huge role in anti-aging as well. Ceramides have been proven to promote collagen production(6). Collagen loss is one of the main causes of wrinkles and overall aging of the skin. What to do about it- It’s pretty simple! Look for moisturizers and serums with ceramides in them! If your pores can handle fatty acids then that’s even better! This post has a lot of great recommendations for moisturizers that work well with tret and most if not all of them contain ceramides. My personal favorite is the Purito dermide relief barrier moisturizer which works great for my super clog-prone skin. I also recommend the Cocokind barrier repair serum. [PSA] [Research] Why Most Ceramide Products are a Scam
There seems to be a lot of interest in ceramides and not a lot of transparency on the part of skincare companies, so I thought I’d make this post. Super long, so bear with me. Full disclosure: I work in the industry. TL;DR - most products that are marketed as having ceramides have a ridiculously low amount and in the wrong ratios when combined with cholesterol and free fatty acids, which they ideally should be combined with. They may still work for you because lotions and creams are generally moisturizing, but the ceramides are likely adding nothing. Hopefully skincare companies will become more transparent and honest as time goes by and more consumers demand it. [Edit: I did not expect such an overwhelming response! Because there have been so many questions about this, I want to emphasize - many of the products mentioned in this thread have worked very well for many people, and they should* continue to use the products that work for them*. Are the concentrations too low to reflect some seminal research findings regarding ceramides? Many times, yes. Are the molar ratios incorrect? Many times, yes. Does that mean that the product will not work for you? No. It just means that it's a bit dishonest to market the product on the back of research findings that the product does not actually reflect.] What are ceramides, and why are they beneficial to skin? Ceramides are waxy substances that, in part, make up the “mortar-like” barrier in between the “brick-like” corneocytes that prevents skin from losing water (transepidermal water loss, or TEWL). The other major components are cholesterol and free fatty acids. Together, these components form a liquid crystal structure that is very efficient at preventing water loss. The application of this would be for skin suffering from atopic dermatitis, skin that is adjusting to retinoid usage, or skin that has been stripped by aggressive treatments or environment factors (aggressive acid treatments, stripping cleansers, very cold or dry weather, etc.). Do ceramides need to be combined with cholesterol and free fatty acids to work? In short, probably. There is research by Mao-Qiang and Feingold (they are experts on this topic and have a number of very good papers on this - google their names and “physiologic lipids” and you can even see some of their full papers as pdf’s) that indicates that when any one of these components is used in isolation of the others, or in the wrong molar ratios, it actually delays repair of the barrier. What ratios are ideal for ceramides, cholesterol and free fatty acids for barrier repair? The research indicates that a 1:1:1 to 3:1:1 molar ratio of any of the components works to repair the barrier. Some research shows different populations benefiting more or less from ceramide, cholesterol or free fatty acid-dominant blends. For example, aged skin benefits more from a cholesterol-dominant ratio, while infants benefit more from a free fatty-acid dominant ratio, and eczematic skin benefits more from a ceramide-dominant ratio. All three work for irritant contact dermatitis (caused by aggressive treatments, weather, friction, etc.), which is good news, since most people in the general population looking for ceramide-laced products would fall into this category. Can I depend on the fatty acids found in plant oils to provide the free fatty acids in a product? You could, but I wouldn’t recommend it. Most of the free fatty acids in plant oils are bound to triglycerides, meaning that it must go through an enzymatic process for the fatty acids to be freed. That process is not especially predictable (microflora on the skin seems to affect this as well, such as those suffering with malassezia overgrowth) and can vary between people. The free fatty acids should ideally be provided in predictable, precise quantities to ensure a proper ratio to the ceramides and cholesterol. Labmuffin has a good post on her blog about this as well, so look there if you want more detail. What % of ceramides is useful to skin? The research by Mao-Qiang and Feingold shows that a total combined concentration of 1% to 1.6% of ceramides, cholesterol and free fatty acids is capable of repairing the barrier. When examining the optimal 3:1:1 molar ratio, researchers they tested a total concentration of 1%-1.2%. That means at an optimal 3:1:1 molar ratio at a concentration of 1-1.2%, with any component being dominant, the ceramide concentration needs to be .3%-.7%. It’s useful to note, at this concentration, the lipid mixture outperformed petrolatum by the 2-hour mark, which is impressive since petrolatum is often considered the gold standard in preventing transepidermal water loss. How does a ceramide/cholesterol/free fatty acid combo differ from an occlusive such as petrolatum? Petrolatum acts as a physical barrier to moisture loss (occlusive), and provides about a 50% recovery from baseline immediately upon application to skin. Over an 8 hour period, this stays pretty consistent, with just a minor drop by the 8 hour mark. A proper blend of ceramides/cholesterol/free fatty acids, however, does not provide an immediate physical barrier to water loss. Instead, these lipids get incorporated into the skin’s natural pool of lipids, where it then is incorporated into the liquid crystal structure that forms skin’s natural barrier. This takes time, which means that the benefit is delayed. However, by the 2-hour mark, an optimal 3:1:1 blend outperforms petrolatum, providing a 55% recovery (vs 50% for petrolatum), and by the 8-hour mark, the difference is even more dramatic (90% recovery vs 40% recovery for petrolatum). It’s notable that combining the two strategies provides the benefits of both immediate partial relief and long-term recovery for a damaged barrier. Okay, so what products follow the research? Unfortunately, not many. Most companies use a raw material blend called SK-Influx, which is a combination of an emulsifier (sodium lauroyl lactylate) along with 1.5% ceramides, .5% cholesterol, and 3.5% free fatty acids and .5% phytosphingosine, per the manufacturer’s own document (https://personal-care.evonik.com/product/personal-care/downloads/downloads/sk-influx.pdf). They sometimes, more vaguely, say that it has “2.5% active matter”, but they are adding .5% cholesterol and .5% phytosphingosine in addition to the 1.5% ceramides to get to that number. The maximum recommended usage for SK-Influx is 15%, which would result in a .2% final ceramide content. This gets close to the .3% ceramide content supported by the research mentioned above. However, SK-Influx is more typically used in concentrations of 1-5%, which would yield .015%-.075%. That is approximately 10x less than what researchers showed to be effective. How does SK-Influx fare in terms of the molar ratio of cholesterol, ceramides and fatty acids? Simply calculating the ratio between the weights % of the components to calculate ratios is different from molar ratios, which factor in the molar mass of each material. Using the specific molar mass of cholesterol (386.65g/mol), an average molar mass of ceramides (700g/mol), and a typical molar mass of fatty acids commonly used in skincare, such as linoleic, linolenic and stearic acids (280g/mol), we can calculate the molar ratios of the lipids in SK-Influx. This results in 1 part cholesterol, 2 parts ceramide, and 10 parts free fatty acids, or 1:2:10. This is quite far from the 1:1:1-3:1:1 ratio recommended by research! u/the_acid_queen and u/BurgundySnail pointed out that it is hard to pinpoint what the source of the free fatty acids are in Sk-Influx from looking at the ingredient list, and u/the_acid_queen kindly pointed us to the document linked below, which despite not explaining the source of free fatty acids in the blend, nonetheless states in bullet three under "properties," that the product is a "a concentrated mix of different types of ceramides, cholesterol, free fatty acid and phytosphingosine". The likeliest source of free fatty acids is the sodium lauroyl lactylate, which at acidic pH's, breaks down into lactic acid and lauric acid, the latter of which being a free fatty acid. link*:*https://personal-care.evonik.com/product/personal-care/en/products-solutions/concepts/pages/tattoo-care.aspx?valueId=20409&productId=31225&download=custpropfile Does this mean that all the products containing SK-Influx on the market will damage your barrier? Probably not - the concentrations of the lipids are too low, and most products will contain a number of occlusives, humectants and emollients that will act act as a partial barrier to water loss. However, it does mean that the dusting of ceramides in those products are mostly for marketing purposes and provide little to no functional benefit. Popular products that use SK-Influx: Cerave (most of their ingredients lists suggest they’re using SK-Influx at a 1% concentration or less, meaning .015% ceramides or less) Drunk Elephant (Lala Retro Whipped Cream with Ceramides, C-Tango Eye Cream - both ingredient lists suggest they’re using SK-Influx at a 1% concentration or less, meaning .015% ceramides or less) Stratia Liquid Gold (especially concerning because the product is often marketed as having the ideal 3:1:1 ratio which SK-Influx is ridiculously far from; the test version on the founder’s blog originally used 10% SK-Influx, resulting in .15% ceramides, but the current ingredient list suggests they’re using it at a 1% concentration or less, meaning .015% ceramides or less). Edit: u/the_acid_queen clarified that it's at a 10% concentration, meaning the total ceramide content is .15%, not .015%). Paula’s Choice (Omega+ serum moisturizer and all of the other products touting ceramide content; most of the ingredient lists suggest they’re using SK-Influx at a 1% concentration or less, meaning .015% ceramides or less) (thank you for the typo catch, u/Gopoj!) Chemist Confessions Mr. Reliable (props to them for telling you straight up it’s 3% SK-Influx, meaning it has .045% ceramides so still low but better) Again, you may use and love some of these products. Just saying you’d probably love them just as much without the ceramides. One of the few exceptions that is commonly available is Skinceuticals’ Triple Lipid Restore moisturizer, which at 2% ceramides, 4% cholesterol, and 2% free fatty acids gives a 1:4:3 molar ratio, which is not perfect but not bad. However, the total lipid concentration (8% vs ~1% shown to be effective in the research) and price ($128 for 1.6 oz) are overkill for most. submitted by /u/nocloudstoday to r/SkincareAddiction [link] [comments]
