So yesterday I had a surprise realization that backups on two external hard drives may not be enough for very valuable data (thankfully I managed to save *most* of the most important stuff). I want to backup what's left (~100 gigs) on a cloud but I do not want said data to be used for AI training. I’ve been on Google Drive and other clouds for years. The smart bits are genuinely nice, being able to search inside docs/PDFs, auto-grouped photos. But my storage keeps growing, the subscriptions keep creeping up, and I still feel like I’m renting space instead of actually owning my setup. I’m slowly trying to de-Google, but I’d love the AI-ish sorting/searching I get in the cloud, just without the endless subscription and the feeling that everything has to live on someone else’s servers. Lately I’ve been looking at the newer AI NAS marketing, like private cloud + local indexing/AI feature, as a possible middle ground. WD is sold out for years. Seagate probably next. Hard drives and SSD prices through the roof. What hasn't changed? Cloud storage prices per GB. Seems like the obvious and price-stable avenue for companies to store data instead of racking out their own servers at 5x the cost. There's a ticker below the $500mm market cap requirement that I can't mention here, but also competitors like $AMZN, that I think will see a lot of new business soon. Investment disclosure 150+ long dated $5 calls on said unnamed ticker. Research the cloud storage space to see the landscape of very economically priced storage solutions out there to see why I see opportunity here. I have three iOS devices and all of them need to be backed up with iCloud. I just filled all 5GB with just backups - forget about Photo Sharing or iCloud Drive. Why can't we get additional 5 or 10GB for every new device? Please edit: Wow, this got way more controversial than I expected.
