This is gonna be a doozy... 流星戦隊スラムダンクレンジャー Ryuusei Sentai SlamDunkRanger Long Ago in ancient China, the Jade Emperor called a meeting of thirteen humanoids with animal features, the Etoretsu. The Emperor was going to honor the first twelve animals to get across the river with their very own year for the years on the calendar, in the order they reached him. To get there, the Etoretsu would have to cross a river. Two of them, one representing the Rat & one representing the Cat, were terrible swimmers. Knowing that they wouldn't have much luck on their own, the two hatched a clever scheme, hitching a ride on another Etoretsu representing the Ox. One Etoretsu representing the Rooster spotted a raft that allowed him to levitate & used it to get himself & three other Etoretsu across. Just a few feet from the finish line, the Rat & The Cat were compelled to turn against each other, leading to the Rat knocking the Cat into the water. Then the animals were caught up in a storm, leading to the final results... 1st - Rooster 2nd - Ox 3rd - Snake 4th - Rabbit 5th - Sheep 6th - Dragon 7th - Rat 8th - Horse 9th - Monkey 10th - Dog 11th - Pig 12th - Tiger Miffed over the Rat's double-cross, she was saved from drowning by a great power that she used to steal a prototype suit & use it against the other Etoretsu. Jade Emperor used his magitek expertise to save the thirteen from self-destruction. Now they're immortal spirits, cursed to resurrect every time they die but remember every death. Ondori, the Spirit Of The Rooster, now acts as an independent Bus Driver & offers to give a college basketball team a ride to an upcoming Basketball game... this ends up being the first in a series of quests called Saiyuuki. Arc 3 (Chapters 13-26): Following up from the previous arc, The Next Saiyuuki really ramps things up with epic battles, drama, tactics, strategies, & more Star Chips giving the Rangers powers based off more past Sentai Teams. Long's past following Neko's descent into evil starts in the last days of the Han Dynasty. Mis-management, Corruption, & Treachery plagued the crumbling empire & rebellions boiled all across the land. One rebel group, the Yellow Scarves, rampaged across the land, demolishing the imperial army & leaving the corrupt Ten Eunuchs no choice but to consign "volunteers" to try & quash the very rebel faction that their abuse of power gave rise to in the first place. Long himself was among the volunteers & aided Liu Bei, Zhang Fei, & Guan Yu, in defeating the three brothers leading the Yellow Scarves Zhang Jiao, Zhang Bao, & Zhang Liang. Long also met up with his good friend Tora, the Spirit Of The Tiger, who allied himself with Sun Jian, The Tiger Of Jiangdong. Later on, during He Jin disaster, the head eunuch Zhang Rang personally battled Long for the life of young Emperor Shao who had been taken hostage by the Eunuchs. Underestimating Long's power as an Etoretsu & left with no way of escape, Zhang Rang was forced to take his own life after being set on fire by Long by drowning himself in a nearby river. Meanwhile, things were not any better for Uma, the Spirit Of The Horse. The first human friend she made, Lü Bu (godson of Ding Yuan) was won over to the side of Dong Zhuo with the gift of the Red Hare, a horse known for its speed. It was all the more heartbreaking for Uma because the Red Hare's species were created by herself using Zodiac Magic. She also took notice to the general Cao Cao growing paranoid after his attempt at assassinating Dong Zhuo went awry... to the point where he massacred a family in what he believed was self-defense after mishearing a conversation. With Cao Cao deciding that he'd rather betray the world than allow it to betray him, Uma attempted to stop him before the went too far. Along the way, she encountered Nezumi, the Spirit Of The Rat, who was roped into the Anti-Dong Zhao Coalition. The two Etoretsu joined Liu Bei's group in fighting Lü Bu to the point of exhaustion. Elsewhere in Luoyang, an unimaginable treasure was discovered in an abandoned well... the Imperial Seal Of The Realm, the symbol of the Mandate Of Heaven. Legend has it that having this would strengthen someone's claim to be the Emperor/Empress Of China. As rumors of the discovery got out, the already strained Anti-Dong Zhao Coalition began to tear itself apart. With the coalition members at each other's throats, it looked like Dong Zhao's position was finally secure... but not if Ondori, Ushi, Hebi, Usagi, & Hitsuji had anything to say about it. Devising a plan to defeat Dong Zhao once & for all, these Etoretsu collaborated with the minister Wang Yun & his adopted daughter, Diao Chan. Knowing that Dong Zhuo & Lü Bu both liked pretty women. Wang Yun invited Lü Bu to his house & Diao Chan successfully seduced him. Wang Yun then promised Lü Bu her hand in marriage. Then, when Lü Bu was away, Wang Yun invited Dong Zhuo & Diao Chan also seduced him. Dong Zhuo took Diao Chan as his own & Wang Yun did nothing to interfere specifically to drive a wedge between Dong Zhuo & Lü Bu, eventually leading to Dong Zhuo's demise at Lü Bu's hand. With Dong Zhao dead, a massive power vacuum was created. As the remaining warlords scurried to sieze land, The five Etoretsu challenged two warlords who executed Wang Yun in what is essentially a prototype of what would become known as basketball... and the use their Ranger Suits for the first time, winning the life of young Emperor Shao. The two considered going back on the deal struck, but were forced to back off when it was pointed out that the various warlords, while each holding de-facto power over a territory, were NOT their own countries... their rankings still relied on the Emperor's appointment. They're merely gangs of militias operating within the country. When a Yellow Turban rebellion surfaced, Cao Cao consigned the five Etoretsu warriors to aid in capturing 30000 Yellow Turban Rebels & picking the best of them to be converted into his soldiers. When a disgruntled Yellow Turban Rebel murdered his family, Cao Cao went to war with Tao Qian, he quickly asked for help, and the call for help was outsourced to Liu Bei who was quickly joined by the Five Etoretsu Warriors. Cao Cao reluctantly had to concede with the six for the time being because of a surprise attack on the Yan Province by Lü Bu. After bouncing from working with one warlord to another, Lü Bu, after gaining an ally in Chen Gong to cover his strategic weakness, became a formidable wild card. Later on, when Yuan Shu tried using the Imperial Seal Of The Realm to make himself Emperor Of The Zhong Dynasty, One Etoretsu wasn't having it... Saru, the Spirit Of The Monkey, who took notice of Yuan Shu's delusion of grandeur & led a three man strike team with Uma & Nezumi to lead everyone against Yuan Shu, utterly smashing his army. Saru was like a female version of Son Wukong, but even she had her standards. Case in point, when she & Liu Bei met a famous hunter who served him, Saru quickly realized that due to his inability to find a wolf to serve for dinner, he killed his own wife to feed to the two of them. Not long after Liu Bei left, Saru returned & confronted the hunter, discovering that he'd been possessed by an evil spirit. As such, Saru was forced to kill him to end his suffering, later sealing the evil spirit under a rock. Later on, when Lü Bu was betrayed by his own men & handed over to be executed, he groveled & pleaded with Cao Cao to let him live. Cao Cao was initially keen not to execute him, believing that he could make good use of the guy. Liu Bei however wasn't having it, pointing out the fate of his previous lords... and neither was Uma, who was present & in her heartbreak over Lü Bu's descent into villainy, she demanded that the execution be made into a fight to the death so she could settle the score. The two former friends fought fiercely & they were evenly matched... Soon enough however, Lü Bu began to feel remorse for having turned against his first friend & in the end, he allowed Uma to finish him off with a shot to the heart from a bow & arrow. About 200 Years Later, A meteor struck. Within it... a bronze statue of a bird. To Cao Cao, who had by then became a mass conqueror & taken control of Northern China... it was a sign from the heavens... but was it a sign of Cao Cao becoming truly unstoppable? Or was it a sign of his eventual downfall? After narrowly escaping an assassination attempt with help from Uma, Liu Bei came across a wise man named Water Mirror who told him that he would need to fulfill a prophecy and to do it, he would need better men. Water Mirror suggested him to find the "Sleeping Dragon" or the "Fledging Phoenix" as Liu Bei lacked a good advisor. Liu Bei, returning from the Water Mirror's house, found an intelligent strategist Xu Shu who helped defeat Cao Cao numerous times. Cao Cao however quickly found a easy & underhanded solution to the Xu Shu problem. Gaining his own Etoretsu ally in the form of Dark Lady Neko, he took Xu Shu's mother hostage to force him to abandon Liu Bei. Despite the efforts of the SlamDunkRangers, Neko wound up killing the mother by accident. (And actually showed remorse for it by visibly hesitating from attacking her fellow Etoretsu further). Learning of this tragedy, Xu Shu was forced to leave Liu Bei, but not before advising him to visit the tactician Zhuge Liang at his residence at Longzhong. What he found was two persons calling themselves "Sleeping Dragon" Long himself, & his protégé Zhuge Lang. During the Battle Of Bowang, Long played a role in evacuating Xinye before turning it into a fiery trap for Cao Cao's army using his Dragon Fire Power & DragonStaff. During the Battle Of Red Cliff, Uma aided Zhou Yu in his plan for an ambush on Cao Cao by fire by providing a South Easterly Wind by performing a magic ritual with Zhuge Liang that would literally change the winds of destiny, providing Zhou Yu with the South Easterly Wind that was crucial for ensuring that the fire would spread to Cao Cao's ships as planned, ultimately resulting in Cao Cao's base in Wulin burning to the ground. While Cao Cao was able to escape with his life by groveling & pleading with Guan Yu to spare him, THAT was part of Long's plan guided by the stars. With Guan Yu released from his debt to Cao Cao for sparing him & Cao Cao's army dealt a crushing defeat, the Southern Powers would get significant breathing room to expand. Later learning of Zhou Yu's fake marriage scheme meant to be a cover-up so he could assassinate Liu Bei, Saru aided Zhuge Liang in sabotaging the scheme & humiliating Zhou Yu in the process. Much Later, as Liu Bei was crowned prince & appointed the Five Tiger Generals, he also appointed the Etoretsu Ondori, Ushi, Hebi, Usagi, & Hitsuji as the Ryuusei Sentai. After they were forced to fight Guan Yu as he delved too far into his pride, his capture & execution at the hands of Sun Quan angered not only them, but also Lui Bei given the Oath of the Peach Garden, (We were not born on the same year of the same month of the same day but we pledge to die on the same year of the same month of the same day together. Whoever breaks the oath will die.). For forcibly breaking that oath for the three brothers through his execution of Guan Yu, the Ryuusei Sentai invoked Guan Yu's ghost to help exact revenge. Even though Cao Cao tried giving Guan Yu a lavish burial out of respect for the man's bravery & virtue, Cao Cao would also be haunted by his ghost... albeit mostly in hallucinatory form as he developed a brain tumor & by refusing help from a doctor out of paranoia (one of Cao Cao's other doctors tried to poison him after joining forces with Dong Cheng.) Cao Cao sealed his fate, dying from the brain tumor, haunted by Guan Yu's spirit. His son and successor, Cao Pi, forced Emperor Xian to abdicate the throne to him & established the state of Cao Wei to replace the Han dynasty. About a year later, Liu Bei declared himself emperor & founded the state of Shu Han as a continuation of the Han dynasty. Unfortunately for the Etoretsu, Liu Bei's moral compass started to go askew due to his anger over Guan Yu's death & desire to avenge his sworn brother, no matter the cost. This bloodthirsty quest for revenge became even more personal for Liu Bei when Zhang Fei, his other sworn brother, was killed for treating his soldiers too harshly. Trying too hard to avoid all attempts by the Ryuusei Sentai to reason with them, Liu Bei made a fatal mistake. As the Su army suffered from seasonal heat, Liu Bei foolishly kept his army under shades... flammable shades. Lu Xun, with help from Long, attacked & set fire to Liu Bei's camps in the forest, forcing him to retreat. In the process, Dark Lady Neko attacked the Etoretsu & Lu Xun, setting up a Stone Sentinel Maze & successfully killing Ondori, Ushi, Hebi, & Hitsuji... Usagi & Long were the only Etoretsu to escape with their lives as Zhao Yun arrived with reinforcements and Lu Xun was defeated in a duel. While the slain Etoretsu all quickly revived due to their curse, their spirits were at an all time low as Liu Bei fell gravely ill, ashamed of his failure to avenge his fallen sworn brothers & the massive loss of life he caused in the pursuit of revenge. On his deathbed, Liu Bei granted Zhuge Liang, his loyal Prime Minister, the right to carry on he dream of restoring the Han Dynasty. With Liu Bei's death, his eldest son Liu Shan became the new emperor & right on the first year of his reign, Liu Shan had to face the crisis of five armies attacking from five different directions. Zhuge Liang, having a more holistic view towards war & intimate knowledge on the art of organization & alliances, had figured out that these five armies were a loose collection organized by a mastermind from the kingdom of Wei, Sima Yi. All five of these armies had their personal goals & conflicting loyalties. Therefore, to achieve the seemingly impossible & repel all five armies at once, Zhuge Liang sent each of the five members of the Ryuusei Sentai along with one of his non-ranger associates to neutralize them. Ma Chao was sent to pacify the Qiang Tribesmen who greatly respected him... Hitsuji was to aid with his Astral Projection Power. Wei Yan was sent to bamboozle Meng Huo with optical illusions provided by so his army wouldn't be able to discern what they were dealing with... Usagi provided the optical illusions that made it look like Zhuge Liang had way more soldiers than his own with her Super Speed Power . Fei Yi was sent to ask Meng Da to retreat, & pretend to be ill... Hebi was to covertly deliver the letter, protecting herself from interception with her Invisibility Power. Zhao Yun was sent to guard a narrow route that Cao Zhen & his army would barely be able to pass through otherwise... Ushi did battle with the strongest of the invaders with his Super Strength Power. The Wu army would not move if the other four armies didn't make any significant progress as they had trust issues (the last time they collaborated with the Wei, The Wu army opted to move ahead... and were promptly backstabbed by a Wei invasion). But just in case, Ondori goes alone... and sure enough, he encounters Neko again & seeks to avenge his death & the death of three of his friends. This time, Ondori is able to win against Neko by tiring her to the point of exhaustion with his Levitation Power... after a battle that lasts for three days, by which Sima Yi's alliance fell apart. Angered by Wu's inaction & Neko's failure to spur them into action, Sima Yi was forced to wage war on them. After successfully pacifying Meng Huo by defeating & capturing him, then showing mercy by releasing him... seven times... thus convincing Meng Huo to end their conflict peacefully, Zhuge Liang found his path blocked by a storm & was advised to sacrifice 49 human heads. Zhuge Liang didn't want to harm innocent people, & after a talk with Buta, the Spirit Of The Pig, he wrapped animal meat in flour dough & sacrificed THAT instead. Buta, being the big eater he is, wanted to taste that animal meat wrapped in flour for himself, so he made more himself. Thus was the invention of the Meat Bun or Mantou. Finding himself impressed by the talents demonstrated by the general Jiang Wei, Zhuge Liang sought to recruit him. Because Zhuge Liang treated cities that surrendered to him well, many cities surrendered without a fight. Alarmed by Zhuge Liang successfully turning Jiang Wei over to their side with wisdom, Wei sent out their elite soldiers to punish Zhuge Liang for daring to defy the kingdom established by Cao Cao. Zhuge Liang responded to their claims of Cao Cao acting according to heaven's will by pointed out the hypocrisy in that claim... the house of Lui of the Han Dynasty was destroyed by treacherous corruptors... Cao Cao & other former allies of Liu who initially pledged to serve the Emperor gave in to their anger over fate being unfair to them & thus tried to take control of fate through immoral actions, becoming a fawning serpent of the usurpers. Even after breaking the Wei elite with his speech, the tides of war soon turned & in his desperation, Zhuge Liang made the mistake of trusting the security of his supply route at Jieting to Ma Su, who volunteered himself out of overconfidence & for that, was very quickly overrun by Sima Yi's forces. However, what Sima Yi thought would be an easy victory turned out to raise suspicion given that Zhuge Liang was a careful strategist who wouldn't risk himself unless he had a solid strategy. And with the help of the Ryuusei Sentai, he was able to organize a gambit to trick Siam Yi in the event of Ma Su's failure. After a couple failed campaigns, a campaign in which he succeeded in defeating Cao Zhen, only to be forced to return to his palace after Sima Yi spread false rumors about him, Zhuge Liang embarked on his final campaign. Despite bad omens, Zhuge Liang was still committed to fulfilling his duty. This time, Zhuge Liang fought his longtime enemy Sima Yi with deceptions & inventions, forcing him to shift to a defensive position while Long learned from Zhuge Liang's strategy & sent phony intel to lure Sima Yi's forces into a trap & nearly defeat them with his Dragon Fire Power before a torrential rain came & extinguished the fire. As if this unlucky defeat wasn't stressing enough for Zhuge Liang, his days were numbered too because he had been suffering from chronic illness and his condition worsened under stress. He would die of illness at the Battle of Wuzhang Plains while leading a stalemate battle against the Sima Yi. He entrusted Jiang Wei with his books on repeating crossbow on his deathbed. Then, he named Wang Ping, Ma Dai and Zhang Yi the great generals that will continue to lead Shu... As for Long, the heavens had something special planned for him. Upon learning that Zhuge Liang was dead, Sima Yi pursued Jiang Wei's forces, only to retreat as if he saw a ghost. This is because Long planted a wooden statue of Zhuge Liang behind a flaming background provided by his Dragon Fire power, making it look like Zhuge Liang himself had returned from the dead in a heavenly fire. It is not long before Shu Han would fall into a downward spiral without Zhuge Liang. Having outlasted Zhuge Liang, Sima Yi went on to conquer the last warlord to the north & become tremendously influential before being backstabbed & sent into political exile. As the Three Kingdoms began to fall to the very same ideals they were founded on, Sima Yi would launch a coup 10 years later, usurping the throne & exterminating Cao Shuang's family in retaliation for his doublecross. While his persistence & respect for his mentor Zhuge Liang's legacy was commendable, his Northern Campaigns to conquer Wei were proving costly. The three kingdoms would remain deadlocked for quite some time, with no conclusive results in any of their campaigns against one another. After the death of Sun Quan, Wu fell into the grip of Zhuge Ke, a cruel Prime Minister who was intent on usurping the throne. Unfortunately for Zhuge Ke, one Etoretsu had grown wise to his corrupt ambitions before anyone else... Inu, the Spirit Of The Dog. Given their canine nature, Inu had an inherent ability to detect a malicious character even if it's not obvious to anyone else... and with it, they were able to facilitate Zhuge Ke's assassination at a banquet. Soon enough, all 12 of the good Etoretsu found themselves uniting against the corruption & infighting plaguing all three kingdoms. Determined to reclaim the Mandate Of Heaven from the corrupt Eunuchs that had stolen it, the Ryuusei Sentai found themselves doing battle with a mysterious monster formed from the corruption within the three kingdoms. Retrieving the Bronze Bird statue that landed in the hands of Cao Cao long ago & using it in conjunction with the Mandate Of Heaven, Long was able to transform into a SlamDunkRanger & defeat the monster, sealing him in a box. This victory however did nothing to lessen the blow of the Three Kingdoms falling & the Jin Dynasty being established. The one silver lining was that Sima Yan, the first emperor of the Jin Dynasty, becomes more of a noble demon who isn't out to destroy the Ryuusei Sentai, as he recognizes them as irreplaceable resources in various ways. This whole backstory is wrapped around the Next Saiyuuki, which revolves around the first formal basketball tournament that the SlamDunkRangers find themselves competing in... one founded on the Derby Colosseum System from Ten Gokaiger. Speaking of which, the first Sentai Team that the SamDunkRangers compete against is none other then the Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger. After they win, they advance & compete against the Avataro Sentai DonBrothers. The core five of both teams play hard & ultimately, the SlamDunkRangers win. Then the tournament is crashed by the same Eunuch monster that Long defeated ages ago, now calling himself Fubai (named after the Chinese word for "corruption") who was inadvertently released by Neko from his box prison & is now in an uneasy alliance with her & the Kichiku-Oh Dynasty seeking revenge. The resulting fight leads to Neko killing Usagi while Fubai almost kills Long... until he re-awakens his SlamDunkRanger form Orange Dragon & turns the tide. Fubai is angry that despite the SlamDunkRangers losing one of their own, there will still be five competing against his personal team of Chijou No Akuma, consisting of the returning NezumiHoshi & four new monsters. DonBrothers-Esque schenanigans ensue with Don Momotaro, InuBrother, SaruBrother, & Red Rooster. Along the way, Neko kills NezumiHoshi in a fit of rage, inadvertently discovering how she was created... via Gao Qiu turning Nezumi, the Spirit Of The Rat into a monster. The championship Basketball Game is the SlamDunkRangers (Ondori, Ushi, Hebi, Hitsuji, & Long) VS. Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger. The core five Kyoryugers are shown to have had improvement in the game of Basketball since Episode 32 of their series (Brave 32: Victory! The Sports Game), but the SlamDunkRangers have had about two centuries of experience in the sport. With time, Usagi & Nezumi both revive & engage in a rematch with Neko & Chijou No Akuma 99-102. This time, it's an all-girls game with five female villains against five female SlamDunkRangers. Hebi, Usagi, & three new female SlamDunkRangers. Nezumi, Uma, & Saru... who all awaken as SlamDunkRangers. The final three fights of the arc start out as a standard Basketball match against five more Chijou No Akuma brought forth by Fubai. Then Fubai escalates the battle by growing the Chijou No Akuma to giant size, forcing a Sentai Mecha battle. Right as the rangers are reaching their breaking point the first time, Long enters the fight with his own EtoZord, ZordRyusei. The next fight follows a similar format, but the ship where the Derby Colosseum System basketball matches took place begins monitoring the Flash Solar System from Choushinsei Flashman. The final fight sees Fubai launch his endgame to conquer the Flash Solar System, challenging the Flashmen themselves to a Basketball match that he expects them to lose. Even with the SlamDunkRangers helping them in mastering Basketball, Fubai just sets fire to the court. This violation of the rules of basketball drives the SlmDunkRangers to intervene directly. When Fubai escalates the battle by enlarging his third set of Chijou No Akuma, he supercharges them with the power of the Anti-Flash Phenomenon in order to destroy the Flashmen & their solar system. Uma uses the Star Chip power of the Kiramagers hoping that it would help. What it does is grant her Kiramai Red's power of Imagination Manifestation, allowing for a new combiner to be formed... SlamDunk Ryuusei-Roku. The SlamDunkRangers The Core Team Outfits are based off Customized Basketball Uniforms. Each SlamDunkRanger's helmet looks like a standardized helmet in its default appearance, appearing very similar to the helmets from Denji Sentai Megaranger, only the mouthpieces are the same color as the rest of the helmet rather than silver, there's a line dividing the visor vertically (similar to the visor of Goggle Red from Dai Sentai Goggle V), and above the visor is a crystalline formation that's the same uniform appearance for all the helmets; round with the face pattern of a Basketball. When the helmet is donned by the SlamDunkRanger of the matching color, the helmet gains a unique modification reflecting the Chinese Zodiac Animal they represent. Levitating to victory... Red Rooster! Red Rooster - Ondori, the Spirit Of The Rooster has been working as a Bus Driver ever since buses were introduced to Japan. Always trying to do the right thing even if it kills him, knowing that as an immortal spirit, he'll just come back. Of course, to keep up his ruse as a normal human, he's had to fake the death of one alias & assume another several times. As the Red Ranger of the team, his special power is Levitation, which allows him to make oneself or others float in the air. Fighting with strength & honor... Blue Ox! Blue Ox - Ushi, the Spirit Of The Ox is a fast & strong former wrestler who has been feeling ashamed & unworthy after being outed for cheating. He has a tendency to act impulsively, often accidentally injuring Ondori in the process. Still, he's a valuable teammate when it comes down to the wire. As the Blue Ranger of the team, his special power is Super Strength, which allows him to match even the physically strongest players on the opposing team. Invisible striker... Green Snake! Green Snake - Hebi, the Spirit Of The Snake is a self-proclaimed Superthief who certainly has the skills to back up her claims. Refined, graceful, elegant, agile, not above sabotaging agreements for her own advantage, overall extremely efficient. Pink Sheep! Pink Sheep - Hitsuji, the Spirit Of The Sheep is first seen living in a run down apartment building. A fairly unambitious man whose life gets turned around very quickly when he finds himself running into Ondori, Ushi, Hebi, & Usagi for the first time in millennia. Upon joining the team, he is put in charge of making the meals & he's very good at it... but initially, he isn't so good at Basketball. As the Pink Ranger of the team, his special power is Astral Projection, which allows him to eject his spirit out of his body & enter the spirit world. Not an ideal power if it puts his physical body in a coma in the middle of a fight, But any general in Ancient China would kill for a means to communicate long distances without using a relay of heralds. Being in an era that still had magic would make the dreams messages more believable. On top of that, traveling the astral plane would be invaluable to any magician, but that would be as interesting to Hitsuji as off-camera magical research. Burning power of fire... Orange Dragon! Orange Dragon - Long, the Spirit Of The Dragon is a serious-minded individual who is by far the most mature member of the group. He's also experienced the worst of humanity throughout his long existence but is very adamant about protecting humans, knowing fully well that not all of them are bad. After spending the first two arcs as a mere mentor to the Core Team, Long re-awakens his SlamDunkRanger form. Cyan Rat - Nezumi, the Spirit Of The Rat is an immature but courageous Etoretsu who has serious emotional baggage from having been mysteriously driven to knock Neko into the water below & thus having a role in her descent into villainy. It's for this reason that Nezumi is very nervous around most cats... something that Gao Qiu of the Kichiku-Oh Dynasty took full advantage of when he turned her into a Chijou No Akuma. After being killed & revived in her original state, Nezumi is traumatized & thus acts very hot-headed & in your face, even being a bit insensitive. But deep down, she's very compassionate & will try her best to overcome her fear for the sake of the team & the world. Her Ranger Suit is based off the "City Edition" jersey of Oklahoma City Thunder, cyan with tangerine as an accent color. As the Cyan Ranger of the team, her special power is Animation, which allows her to grant "Motion to the Motionless". Whatever inanimate object she touches is brought to life. Coming in with a healing hand... Violet Horse! Violet Horse - Uma, the Spirit Of The Horse is a youthful Etoretsu who has a natural talent for the mystic arts. She's very intelligent, levelheaded, & organized, making her a great team captain whenever she gets the spotlight. Unfortunately, she's not without her flaws. Uma has perfectionist tendencies with severe paranoia & fears failure to the point where she is prone to suffer from nervous breakdowns when confronted with difficult problems or things beyond her understanding. Her Ranger Suit is based off the standard uniform for the Los Angeles Lakers, violet with golden yellow as an accent color. As the Violet Ranger of the team, her special power is Healing & Regeneration, which allows her to heal whatever injury or sickness is afflicting the person she touches as well as repair damaged inanimate objects. Power of the animal kingdom... Jade Monkey! Jade Monkey - Saru, the Spirit Of The Monkey is an adventurous delinquent who is very sassy, abnormally strong for her size, & often goes looking for trouble, using knowledge gained from movies, comics, & TV shows. While her revival curse doesn't mean she stays dead for long, she still feels pain & anger when she is killed (and she's been killed the most times out of the 13 Etoretsu). While her disobedient & irreverent personality tends to get on her elders' nerves, Saru isn't abrasive or mean-spirited & has the same heroic flair as a certain stone monkey. Her Ranger Suit is based off the uniform for the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Women's Basketball Team, jade green with bronze as an accent color, effectively making her the first-ever Jade Green Ranger. She also has a jade green monkey tail that shows even through her Ranger Suit. As the Jade Ranger of the team, her special power is Animal Shapeshifting which allows her to transform into any existing animal or revert someone/something transformed into an animal to their original form. Selecting what animal a person or object transforms into is done by verbally exclaiming the name of the animal in question, but can also work by saying the animal in one's mind. This power comes in the form of a transformation beam when used to transform others. Premiership Oban Camanachd v Kinlochshiel Camanachd will be looking to bounce back at Mossfield after the loss to Newtonmore last week. 'Shiel are no pushovers though and come into this one in decent shape with 2 wins in the league and an admirable defeat against Kingussie in the MacTavish. A decent test for both sides early in the season, I fancy it to be tight, but leaning towards the home side. Fort William v Col Glen Fort will be full of confidence after the cup derby win over Lochaber though i would not be surprised if a few of the boys will miss this one after that grueling match which had everything to black eyes and head knocks to camans wrapped round legs. The Tractor Boys will make the trip to An Aird and hope to cause an upset, but the gap between these two sides on current form is significant. Hard to see anything other than a comfortable home win here. Kyles Athletic v Newtonmore Tighnabruiach is never an easy place to go, and the Royal Blues will fancy their chances of making More work for it on their own patch. That said, Newtonmore are looking like a different class this season and I don't see anyone, anywhere, slowing them down. More to win. National Division Beauly v Oban Celtic Beauly will be riding high after their win in the league. Celtic are ranked some way below them, a long journey too. This looks like a home banker on paper. Bute v Glenurquhart The Islanders hosting the Glen in Rothesay. Glenurquhart are the stronger side in the rankings and were ruthless in the cup last week. Long trip for the Glen but they should have enough. Fancy the visitors to steal some rare points from the Island. Glasgow Mid Argyll v Lovat GMA will want to put last weekend's disappointing result behind them. Lovat are a well-ranked, inform side. The City Boys at home might make a game of it, but the Lovat look the more likely winners to me. North Division 1 Caberfeidh v Skye After a cup win at Bught Park last week, Cabers will be full of beans heading into this one. Skye are a decent side but Caberfeidh are doing no bad this season. Glenurquhart v Kingussie An interesting one at Drumnadrochit. The Glen were knocked out the cup last weekend, but Wee Kings are having a fine season and sit at the top of the table. Hard to predict this one. Kinlochshiel v Inverness Shiel at home to Inverness. After the cup exit last week, Ness won't be in great spirits. Shiel should be comfortable here. Home win. Newtonmore v Glengarry Glengarry are a side that has been quietly improving, with help from Nick Dalgety and his goals, but this is a step too far at the Eilan against a Newtonmore side looking strong right now. Strathglass v Fort William Fort William dominated the league last season, while Strathglass were National League whipping boys. They are still on an incredible non-winning streak... can they get a famous win this weekend? South Division 1 Ardnamurchan v Aberdour Long trip for the Fifers up to Strontian. Ard are the higher-ranked side and on their own patch should have enough. Both teams do not travel well so an important one for Ard. Lochside Rovers v Glasgow Mid Argyll Wee Camanachd hosting GMA 2nds at Ganavan Sands. Wee Camanachd will be out to make home advantage count. Should be a competitive one but the home side to edge it. North Division 2 Boleskine v Lewis Boleskine are struggling this season and Lewis will see this as a chance to pick up points on the road on what could be a title challenging season for them. Aberdeen University v Beauly The Students hosting Beauly's second string. No idea how this one goes. Lochcarron v Lovat Lovat 2nds making the trip along to Lochcarron. History books have Lovat as favourites. South Division 2 Aberdour v Strachur-Dunoon The Currachs head east after that big Bullough Cup win. Aberdour's seconds on home turf, but Strachur-Dunoon will be full of confidence albeit with some first team regulars missing. And with 'Dour first team on a long away trip the home side may also have a weakened side. Could go either way, slight lean to the visitors on form. Kilmory v Uddingston Uddy coming off the back of that Sutherland Cup upset will have belief. Kilmory at home though. Tight one but I just expect Kilmory to edge it. MacTavish Cup – First Round Skye v Kilmallie The postponed tie from last week gets played. Skye at home should be favourites here. Kilmallie are a decent side but the Islanders on home turf should edge it. Sutherland Cup – First Round Stirling v Bute The rescheduled tie after the ferry issues last week due to storm Davey. Bute also missing some regulars but should have enough to progress in the cup. Kilmallie v Lochaber A tasty derby at Canal Park. Both sides are evenly matched in the rankings. Should be a proper game. WCA Premier League Glasgow Mid Argyll v Lochaber Two of the strongest women's sides in the country going head to head at Peterson Park. GMA will fancy their chances at home but Lochaber are the slightly stronger side on current form. Could go either way. Slight lean to Lochaber. WCA National League Dunadd v Strathspey Pretty evenly matched these two. Home advantage could be the difference. Fancy Dunadd to edge it. Glengarry v Strathglass Strathglass are the slightly higher-ranked side but they're making the trip to Invergarry. Close one. WCA North League Beauly v Skye Beauly will find this a tough afternoon, though Skye haven't been setting the heather alight recently. The Chelsea FC Women March round-up - the season on a precipice, after another mixed month Welcome to the seventh Chelsea FC Women monthly round-up of the 2025/26 season. These reviews are posted on a monthly basis throughout the season, and each features a summary of all the action for Chelsea FC Women - and a preview of the month to come (These posts are long read, so feel free to skip to the end for the summary!) Introduction It may have taken until the Ides of March for Chelsea to get going - with the first half taken up by an international break, but it was another eventful month on and off the pitch, nonetheless. A huge 18 players had been called up for international duty - and notably, we would be without Ellie Carpenter and Sam Kerr for essentially the entire month, with our two Aussies taking part in the 2026 Asian Cup. This would mean missing the pair for our first final of the season, which would be our first fixture in March, too - the League Cup final, against Manchester United. Despite the truncated month, we would still have time for another three fixtures in the WSL too, as the close race for Europe looked set to roll on. And perhaps most importantly, March would also see the resumption of the Champions League - where we would take on our bitter rivals Arsenal, in the first leg of our quarter-final tie. It was a month in which every game was a must-win - with no exception… but given the undulations of the season so far, there were few who realistically felt these expectations would be fulfilled. Key headlines Guro Reiten’s surprise mid-season departure As if we hadn’t had enough bad news this year so far, all of the fanbase was rocked by the news following the international break, that our legendary "Assist Queen" had left the club to join the NWSL’s Gotham FC. Having seen her minutes diminished over the past 18 months due to a combination of injuries, maternity leave, and the arrival of Sandy Baltimore (and Bompastor’s preference for her...) it was expected that Reiten would be leaving this summer when her contract expired - but it was however a shock to see the Norwegian leave mid-season. It also meant we did not get to say a proper goodbye to a player who has been so pivotal to our recent glories. It felt a shame - and although everyone wishes her only the best, it was with sadness we see her time at Chelsea end this way. Cat Macario leaves for San Diego Wave This move was more expected - it has been rumoured for several months that the USWNT international would be going back Stateside, having never really established herself as a first team regular, in an injury-plagued time at Chelsea. It was finally confirmed this month that Macario is joining San Diego Wave for a notable fee - and a reported record NWSL salary. It’s a move that makes sense for all parties - but again, the timing felt odd, given our squad depth is being stretched to the limit. New deal for Lauren James With Reiten and Macario leaving, the news that our talisman, Lauren James, has signed a new deal to keep her at the club until 2030 was much more welcome. The club clearly have an eye on the future - and LJ is the one to build our new era around. The 2026 Asian Cup As mentioned, Aussies Ellie Carpenter and Sam Kerr were missing for much of the month, as they were busy representing their nation in the 2026 Asian Cup - which was held in Australia. It was an excellent showing for both players - in particular Kerr, who as captain scored four goals to help Australia to the final. Unfortunately for our duo, it was another Chelsea player (currently on loan at Spurs) who stole the headlines - Maika Hamano scoring the only goal in the final, as Japan won their third title. Now - to the action! Chelsea 2-0 Manchester United (League Cup final) The international break featured plenty of action on the pitch for the Blues, and also off it. The biggest news was the announcement just a few days before our first fixture of the month, that fan favourite Guro Reiten would be leaving the club, after a glorious seven years in Blue. It was yet another sign that times are a-changin’ at Chelsea. With so much flux, and uncertainty ahead, the League Cup final felt like it carried much more significance than usual for the competition which is decidedly second-rate in women’s football. So much so, that this would be the last season that teams competing in the Champions League would even take part in it. Our victory over Manchester City in last season’s final was the first part of the unbeaten domestic treble that headlined Bompastor’s inaugural season in charge - but given the pressure she has been under this year, this season’s final felt more vital. We would be taking on the other team in Manchester this time, with Marc Skinner’s United playing their first final in their competition. As added motivation, we had knocked the Red Devils out of the FA Cup last month, in a tight encounter that needed extra time to separate the two - and a similarly close battle could be expected here. Bompastor confirmed before kick off that club captain Millie Bright remained unavailable with injury, but our centre back ranks were bolstered by the return of Nathalie Bjorn and Kadeisha Buchanan - the latter getting her first game time in 15 months with a substitute appearance before the international break, following a lengthy ACL rehab. The ongoing Asian Cup would mean we were also without Aussie duo Sam Kerr and Ellie Carpenter. United had absences of their own, too - Ella Toone out with injury, and midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who was also at the Asian Cup. With Bright still out, Erin Cuthbert had the honour of captaining Chelsea for the first time in a cup final. It was conditions that would suit the battling Scot - driving rain and wind down at Bristol City’s Ashton Gate stadium. The early signs were that Lauren James was continuing the scintillating form she’d shown in the international break for England, and having been deployed in a similar position on the left, was looking Chelsea’s biggest threat. At the other end Man United’s Elisabeth Terland was causing the biggest problems for Chelsea’s defence - but neither side had really been able to carve out some meaningful opportunities. The first real chance, was due to a huge error - and a hugely uncharacteristic one from one of United’s most experienced players, Dominique Janssen. A sloppy touch gave James the chance to win the ball, and she was ruthless in punishing the Dutchwoman’s error - lashing past Tullis-Joyce to put Chelsea ahead after less than 20 minutes. It was a first cup final goal for LJ, and she celebrated by putting her fingers to her ear, as the Man United fans roundly booed their former player. United responded well and increasingly more of the action was taking place in our defensive third - but Chelsea were looking resolute and determined in defence. The game was being played mainly on transition, which is unusual for these two teams - our encounters normally being quite cagey. This led to Chelsea’s next big chance - and it absolutely should have been 2-0. Alyssa Thompson was released in behind the defence and ran from the halfway line through on goal - only for United’s captain Maya Le Tissier to make a crucial tackle at the very last moment, and potentially save the cup final for her team. On the brink of half time United could have been level - Melvine Malard getting the better of international team mate Baltimore to put a dangerous cross in, which Ellen Wangerheim somehow put wide. At the break Chelsea remained in the ascendency on the scoreboard - but United had had the better chances, and there was a sense there were some more twists to come. Bompastor made one half time change - and there would be no chance for Thompson to make amends for not putting the Blues 2-0 ahead, with Aggie Beever-Jones coming on in her place. There was another change, however - the sun had come out, and it had finally stopped raining Otherwise, the second half started as the first half ended, with United on top. Buchanan nearly matched Janssen after a mistake of her own - but Naalsund’s shot from distance did not unduly trouble Hampton. There was not much of a sense of control about the game, with both teams struggling to keep the ball in midfield - and there were spaces for Chelsea to exploit in the opposition final third. Rytting Kaneryd found herself with a lot of room out on the right flank on several occasions - but frustratingly could not find the quality of cross. A player who could, was of course James - and Buchanan should have done better with a headed chance, after a delightful ball from James. That was Buchanan’s last action of the game, after a solid 60 minutes on her first start following her ACL injury. Nathalie Bjorn came on in her place, making her first appearance since her own injury - a hamstring tear sustained back in November. Hearingbreakingly, her comeback lasted just minutes - appearing to pull a calf muscle when making a pass. It was horrible to witness - the Swede in tears, and her team mates rallying around to support her. This meant a reshuffle, as Wieke Kaptein came on, Bronze moved into the centre of defence, and Nusken went to right back. Man United meanwhile had made their first changes too - with Fridolino Rolfo and Lea Schuller coming on, as the very definition of big players for big occasions. All the substitutions did disrupt the flow of the game a bit, which was no bad thing for Chelsea - and have plentiful experience in managing these occasions. United persisted in giving Rytting Kaneryd space down the flank - and then had big reason to regret it, when the Swede finally managed to put a cross into the right area. Having said that, its target, Beever-Jones, had a huge amount to do - grappling with Lundkvist who looked favoured to clear. But Beever-Jones as the cliche goes, wanted it more, and managed to win out, toepoking past Tullis-Joyce to put Chelsea 2-0 ahead with under 15 minutes to go. It was a special moment for the academy graduate, who after a sensational start to the season found her winter disrupted by injury, and has struggled for form - and now could potentially have scored the goal to secure her childhood club another trophy. Awujo then came on for Man United, with Skinner hoping the forward would repeat her feat of scoring off the bench in our previous encounter. There were eight minutes added on due mainly to the injury to Bjorn - and Bompastor used up some of it by bringing off James, and introducing 19-year-old Lexi Potter for her first ever appearance in a cup final. Fifteen years Potter’s senior, Bronze showed she still has it with an excellent block inside her own box, to deny Awujo. The final moment of the game summed it up for Man United - a backpass Tullis-Joyce could not control, to concede a corner that there was no time to take. Once again, then, even in this season of trials and tribulations - a full time whistle blew on a cup final, and with Chelsea emerging victorious. It was our fourth League Cup win - and if we do qualify for Europe next season, it may be our last for a while. As well as the significance of another trophy in the ever-growing cabinet, this win could have a real impact for the final couple of months of the season - in bringing some more good feeling, which has been hard to come by at times. Some more good feeling was that there was a record crowd there to see it - more than 20,000 at Ashton Gate to see Cuthbert lift the trophy. Chelsea 2-1 Brighton & Hove Albion (WSL) "Unprecedented" is a word that has been frequently used to refer to aspects of Chelsea’s season, so far this year - and generally in a negative sense, with lows including the 5-1 defeat to Manchester City, and a first home loss to Arsenal since 2019. The word was a good way to describe the state of the squad, for our first WSL game in almost a month, too (due to a combination of cup fixtures and the international break) - as with Asian Cup absences and injuries coalescing, there was a distinctly thin look about the players involved on this match day, with the bench featuring two goalkeepers and four academy players. Three points was a must in the very tight race for the top three, and Champions League qualification - with Chelsea third ahead of this game. That would be easier said than done though, given the context. Amongst the absentees were Nathalie Bjorn - whose return from injury had so cruelly lasted only minutes, sustaining a calf injury shortly after coming on in the second half of the League Cup final, in the previous game. Sonia Bompastor confirmed pre-match that the Swede would likely now be out for the season, having already missed the three months since November with a hamstring injury. Millie Bright and Naomi Girma remained out too, and with Kadeisha Buchanan only just returning from a 15-month absence with an ACL injury, that was three of our senior centre backs out - and one still working her way back. Desperate times - Bompastor named Buchanan on the bench, and instead started midfielder Wieke Kaptein alongside Veerle Buurman in a very makeshift backline, as one of three changes from the side that started the final at the weekend. With just three days in-between those two fixtures - and the injury issues - it was all a bit make do and mend, and it did also mean Bompastor named her youngest ever starting XI in the WSL. Excitingly, this included a first WSL start for 19-year-old Lexi Potter, the midfielder having graduated from the academy this season to become an increasing feature on match days. As such, it was not too surprising that our opponents, Brighton, did look the more energised in the opening exchanges. The Seagulls are a decent outfit, and had tested Manchester City in a narrow loss earlier this season. They were also welcoming back manager Dario Vidošić to the dugout, who had been on compassionate leave following the recent death of his father. However, neither keeper were really tested in the opening ten minutes - until Chelsea took the lead, slightly against the run of play. Sandy Baltimore had looked Chelsea’s brightest player, as she often does - producing a quality cross from out wide on the left for Alyssa Thompson to head home, after Lauren James had produced a quality backheel to get the ball to Baltimore in the first place. Brighton responded well - the lead lasted less than five minutes, and although they deserved to be level, there was an element of good fortune about the goal. Carla Camacho’s effort from distance took a hefty deflection off Lucy Bronze to wrongfoot Hampton - and it was the Spaniard’s first goal for the club she joined in the summer. Balance restored scoreline-wise, the balance of play continued as before too - Brighton applying themselves better, despite Chelsea having more possession. To Blues fans, it felt nervy when Brighton were attacking, and unexciting when Chelsea were. With the bench so inexperienced too, it was hard to see where inspiration may come from. It turned out to be via the same player who had made the first goal - Baltimore did not directly earn an assist this time, but her cross created the danger that led to Chelsea re-taking the lead. Less unprecedented, but more unfamiliar - Potter getting her first ever senior goal by reacting sharply to poke home a rebound, generating an almighty roar from the Kingsmeadow faithful, who were cheering more than just Chelsea going 2-1 up. The goal coming just before halftime was important too - Brighton had a big task on to come back for a second time. They did make a decent fist of it - but Chelsea had a clear plan to contain, and did manage to take control of the game in the second half. This was assisted by the introduction of Buchanan and Erin Cuthbert for James and Thompson around the hour mark - a clear, but understandably conservative move. The game may have been more comfortable, if not for the offside flag denying Aggie Beever-Jones a second goal in two games, amongst a largely uneventful second half. The result of the other midweek WSL game outlined the importance sometimes of "just getting it done" - our rivals for top three, Manchester United, not being able to do the same, and drawing 0-0 against struggling West Ham. This meant Chelsea moved into second place in the table - and inched closer to qualification for next season’s Champions League, which is the absolute minimum for a club of our stature. London City Lionesses 1-1 Chelsea (WSL) The games kept coming thick and fast - and next up for Chelsea was a short trip to South London, to take on women’s football upstarts London City Lionesses. Our rivals for Champions League qualification, Manchester United and Arsenal, would be in action at the same time - and with both having on paper "easier" fixtures, the pressure felt more with Chelsea. Sonia Bompastor leant even further into the youthful theme of the last match day squad - 17-year-old full back Chloe Sarwie making her first WSL start, as one of four changes from the side that had beaten Brighton. Kadeisha Buchanan, Erin Cuthbert and Johanna Rytting Kaneryd completed the quartet. Naomi Girma was back in the squad after injury, but fit enough only for the bench - and with Lucy Bronze, Keira Walsh, Sandy Baltimore and Lauren James amongst those joining her, there were plenty of experience and gamechangers lying in wait. Bompastor would hope not to need them - but there was a good chance she would. After being promoted to the top division last year, the Michelle Kang-funded London City Lionesses have undeniably had a successful first season - and sit comfortably midtable. Their squad is stacked full of big names and special players - and their ambition is clear in that they already saw fit to part ways with the manager who earned them promotion mid season, despite their good start. Clearly, Kang wants more. With the Chelsea backline looking makeshift, LCL might have fancied an opportunity for their real headline win. The match had been moved to Millwall’s stadium, for the occasion - and there was a decent ground at The Den to see the champions play. It was a lively start from both teams, belying the 12:00 kick off on a Saturday - with Aggie Beever-Jones and Alyssa Thompson looking to be linking up well. Sarwie was also belying her youth, looking assured beyond her years, but was not put under too much pressure, with Chelsea having most of the play. Therefore, when the Blues did open the scoring, midway through the first half, it was not undeserved. Beever-Jones showed some good centre forward play to touch on a long ball - and it found the ever-willing runner, Rytting Kaneryd, who with her pace left the opposition defence dry - and finished for only her second WSL goal this season. The danger with a team like London City Lionesses, is that their individual quality can always change a game. There were some nerves then, when £1 million WSL record signing Grace Geyoro stood over a free kick - but it was straight at Hannah Hampton. Chelsea took the 1-0 lead into the half time - but it probably should have been more on the balance of play, so it remained a slim advantage to maintain over the next 45 minutes. Bompastor made one change at the break - Sandy Baltimore replacing goalscorer Rytting Kaneryd. There was little of note in the opening exchanges of the second half, until what looked like a nasty looking ankle knock for Beever-Jones, following a tackle from Julia Roddar. It was the last thing either player or Bompastor needed - the middle section of Beever-Jones’ season being disrupted by injury, and the squad already looking thin. The tearful forward had to be helped off the pitch, and was replaced by Keira Walsh, with Lucy Bronze and Naomi Girma also coming on, to replace Buchanan and Sarwie. This meant with 30 minutes to play, the personnel now had a more familiar look about it - and it was a good job, as LCL were very much in this game. Substitute Delphine Cascarino really should have equalised - hitting it straight at Hampton from point blank range, and it had to be considered a big miss for a player of her quality. This also worked to increase the energy amongst the home fans - and the nerves for Chelsea, and the remaining 20 minutes looked like a case of "game management" to protect the narrow lead. Chelsea had to navigate a barrage of corners - and it looked like the home side had equalised from one of them, only for an almost inexplicable save from Hampton from point blank range to tip it on to the bar. Cuthbert was also on hand to clear an Asslani effort off the line - it was proper all hands on deck stuff. Then, with ten minutes to go - we were breached. Hampton had kept Chelsea's lead intact on a few occasions, but her save from Corrales this time could only find Izzy Goodwin - who headed in the rebound to make it 1-1. A winner now was imperative - Lauren James coming on as a final roll of the dice. With the wind in their sails, it looked more likely the home side would find the decisive goal, though. There were six minutes of injury time, but Chelsea could not fashion out any real chances - our only effort on goal being a tame shot from outside the box by James. Then, a bolt from the blue - but not Chelsea blue, with news that Everton had equalised against Manchester United in their fixture. As quickly as we were reprieved, our hopes were dashed anew, however - as United got an even later winner. The dropped points meant Chelsea were back into third - and clinging on, as although Arsenal were two points behind after their 5-0 win vs West Ham, they also had two games in hand. There was no time to feel sorry for ourselves though - as our next opponents would be one of those top three rivals, Arsenal, as we travelled to the Emirates for the first leg of our Champions League quarter-final tie. Arsenal 3-1 Chelsea (WCL, quarter-final first leg) Obviously, at a time in which it feels like the season is teetering on a precipice, there could be few things less ideal than a high-stakes knockout tie against your most bitter rivals. Unfortunately for Chelsea, that is exactly what awaited us after the disappointment of the draw to London City Lionesses - travelling to the Emirates for the first leg of our Champions League quarter-final tie. For all of the challenges and missteps of 2025/26, there was a chance for it to be redeemed whilst we were still alive in Europe - as a triumphant march to our first ever Champions League title was still a possibility. However, with our injury crisis escalating (only eight outfield players featured in the open training session pre-match, to widespread alarm) - and our opponents Arsenal on a ten-match winning streak, and looking in fine form… this possibility seemed slim. There is always added anxiety about a game against the Gunners too - there is no love lost at all between the fanbases, and their fans are never shy in reminding us that whilst the Champions League is the only trophy Chelsea are yet to win, Arsenal have won it twice, including last season. On the bright side, Chelsea qualifying as a seeded team out of the group phase meant we had the advantage of the home leg second - but given the humbling 2-0 defeat at the Bridge back in January, it would be a task first to have something to defend there. The final score then, and a two-goal deficit that will be hard to overturn, did not feel a surprise. The regret was, that it really could have been different. Absentees from the match day squad included Millie Bright, Sam Kerr, Nathalie Bjorn, Mayra Ramirez, Aggie Beever-Jones, and Niamh Charles… but surprisingly, Ellie Carpenter was named on another youthful-looking bench, despite playing in the Asian Cup final at the weekend. Sonia Bompastor made five changes to the much-rotated side that had drawn against LCL, with Lucy Bronze, Keira Walsh, Sandy Baltimore, Naomi Girma and Lauren James all back into the XI. As expected, and roared on by an expectant home crowd, Arsenal started the better - and it felt like it could be a long night for the Blues. However, it was Chelsea who struck woodwork twice inside the opening ten minutes. The first somewhat unusually, when Alyssa Thompson burnt Laia Codina for pace, and saw her shot trickle towards goal then off the post. The second, felt more agonising - excellent footwork by James to set up her own chance, only to see her strike come back off the post. The Blues clearly had a plan to catch Arsenal on transition, utilising the pace of Thompson and the ingenuity of James - and this looked to have rattled the Gunners at first, with them giving the ball away a few times in midfield. Of course, it was Arsenal who went ahead - a Katie McCabe free kick headed in by Stina Blackstenius, who has frequently been a thorn in Chelsea’s side over the years. It then went from bad to worse - Chloe Kelly doubling Arsenal’s lead in the 33rd minute, with a superb effort from distance, that maybe Hannah Hampton could have done better with. The most irritating thing was that this did not feel like a game we should be losing 2-0 - but Arsenal had been clinical, and Chelsea a bit unlucky. That feeling was only made worse five minutes before halftime, when Veerle Buurman looked to have halved the deficit with a header for a corner - only for the goal to be disallowed for what looked like the softest of fouls on Codina. VAR (which is in use in the knockouts of the Champions League) could have made amends - but bafflingly the decision stood, and Arsenal kept hold of their 2-0 lead at half time. The start to the second half felt crucial - concede again, and it really would feel like the tie was done. Hampton was needed to deny Alessia Russo, and then with it still 2-0 around the hour mark Bompastor decided to make a push with an attacking change, subbing off Girma for Johanna Rytting Kaneryd. Finally, Chelsea did have our goal - and given its quality, it would have been fair for it to have counted double. Arsenal failed to clear their lines from a corner, and the ball found the one player you absolutely would not want it to find - and the one player who had looked all night like she could make a difference. The distance, the curl, the finesse… it was simply an outrageous goal from Lauren James, and it made it 2-1, to give Chelsea hope. That did not last long - Russo finishing off a very well-worked team goal from Arsenal very well, not long after, to restore Arsenal's two-goal cushion. Still, another goal for Chelsea, and the tie would still feel alive - and the Blues went gung-ho in search of it. In injury time, we almost had it - but once again the referee intervened to disallow what looked like a vital goal, and although less of a howler than the first, we could still feel aggrieved. Kadeisha Buchanan clearly did make contact with Arsenal keeper Anneke Borbe, but it looked like her follow through caught her after the ball had already gone in. It wasn’t Chelsea’s night with the officials though - and with the full time score 3-1 to Arsenal, it was not Chelsea’s night full stop. The Blues have overturned a deficit like this before - notably the 3-0 win in the quarter-final second leg vs Manchester City last year, to win 3-2 on aggregate. This situation feels different here though - with two teams on different trajectories in terms of form and confidence, and Chelsea at one of the lowest ebbs that any of us can remember. Chelsea 4-3 Aston Villa (WSL) For the final fixture in March, Chelsea had the sometimes advantage of our rivals having played the day before - and knowing their results ahead of our game. We knew before kick off therefore, that on the WSL's “Derby Weekend” Manchester City had thumped Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford. This moved City closer to the title, but more importantly for Chelsea, meant an opportunity for us to move back into the Champions Leagues places… if we could beat Aston Villa at Kingsmeadow. Arsenal had won the North London Derby 5-2 - and with their two games in hand still to be played they are looking well-positioned for top three, with the remaining spot very likely to come down to Chelsea and United. We had just four games left to play of the WSL season to determine that - and you can tell it’s crunch time, as the cliches were out, with Sonia Bompastor declaring in her press conference that “every game is a cup final” now. Bompastor had also confirmed both Ellie Carpenter and Sam Kerr would be back available for selection, following the Asian Cup - in a welcome boost to the depleted squad. And both the Aussies were back in to start, as two of three changes from the side who had lost to Arsenal in the Champions League. Wieke Kaptein was the other, replacing Erin Cuthbert in midfield. Millie Bright remained absent entirely - but there was the welcome site of Niamh Charles being in the match day squad for the first time since December. Villa are a funny old team - one capable of holding Man City to a 0-0 draw in their last WSL game, but also of losing 7-3 to Spurs in the game before that. It is hard to know what version of them to expect - but they were not to be trifled with, due to that. However, it did still come as a surprise when they took the lead inside the first two minutes of the game - to leave Kingsmeadow stunned. The clocks had gone forward the night before, signalling the start of British Summer Time - and maybe the time change caught Lucy Bronze out, as it was her stray pass that was capitalised on for the goal. It was unseasonably cold for the end of March, but gradually over the next 15 minutes the Blues did start to warm up. Lauren James had a couple of looseners from distance that did not test Ellie Roebuck too much - with watching fans hopeful she was just finding her range. Sjoeke Nusken then produced a good stop from Roebuck - and it did seem a goal was on its way. It was not too much of a surprise then, when Chelsea did equalise in the 20th minute. Kerr had scarcely had a touch on her return to the team, but she looked to have carried through the sharpness from her fine performance in the Asian Cup, perfectly timing her run to finish a Nusken through ball first time. Minutes after we were back on level terms, we took the lead. There was at first confusion over who had scored it, as James deep cross-cum-shot following a short corner may have drifted in of its own accord - but replays showed it was Naomi Girma who got the last touch, for her first WSL goal. Then, Chelsea were comfortable - a third goal inside half an hour completing a rapid turnaround. There was no doubt about who scored this one - and it turns our James’ earlier efforts were warning shots, as this time her low drive found the bottom corner. Then, Chelsea weren’t comfortable - with the opposition getting one back. Kirsty Hansen has been Villa’s leading light this season, and only City’s Bunny Shaw has scored more goals than her in the WSL. The forward beat Bronze to a low cross to make it 3-2. And then, for the second time in the first half, Kingsmeadow was stunned into silence - as Villa completed their own comeback. It was Hansen again, and the defending was again suspect. After having done so well to overturn Villa’s lead and establish some breathing room, we appeared to have thrown it all away - and Chelsea’s uncharacteristic performances were continuing. There were still ten minutes left in the first half, with six goals shared between the two teams - and there was no more drama before the break, but we went into half time with a sense there was surely more twists to come. However, as is often the case in these matches with barmy beginnings, the second half was relatively sedate. Bompastor made the changes you’d expect, with Sandy Baltimore and Erin Cuthbert being introduced. Chelsea gradually increased the ante - but with nowhere near the intensity the watching fans were anxiously urging. We did have a stonewall penalty claim when Roebuck wiped out Kerr - but the offside flag reprieved the goalkeeper. Despite Chelsea’s dominance, unexpectedly it was Villa who came closest to the seventh goal first - Hansen so nearly completing her hat trick with a curling effort that thumped the post and rattled all of Kingsmeadow. There was then the welcome sight of Niamh Charles making her long-awaited return - before we had a lengthy pause to proceedings due to an injury to Roebuck. When we resumed it was with Sabrina d’Angelo in the Villa goal - and almost all she had to do in her cameo was pick the ball out of the back of the net, as Chelsea finally found a way through the stubborn Villa defence. The ball was worked into Kerr in the box, who then laid it off for Nusken - the German bending it first time around d’Angelo with a fine finish. Having finally reclaimed our lead, we could not yet relax - as with eight minutes of injury time to be played there was plenty of opportunity for more drama. Thankfully, there were no more twists - the seventh goal proved the last, to earn a vital three points that meant we edged back ahead of Man United into second place, with now just three cup finals left to navigate in the race for European football. It’s a good job we can remain optimistic about qualifying via the league - as a disappointing 3-1 loss to Arsenal at the Emirates, in the first leg of our quarter-final tie, means we are odds-on to exit this season’s competition at the hands of our most bitter rivals. There’s been plenty going on off the pitch too - Lauren James extending her contract as a major 'signing', whilst Guro Reiten and Cat Macario have left for the NWSL, on permanent deals. April preview Our first game of the month takes place on April Fools’ Day - and with a 3-1 first leg deficit ahead of the second leg of our Champions League quarter-final tie against Arsenal, it seems fairly clear who the fool may be. It’s highly unlikely we will turn that around - as although we’ve pulled off similar heroics before, our opposition look to be in scintillating form, and we do not. There still more to play for in April, however - on Easter Monday we will host Tottenham Hotspur in an FA Cup quarter-final, before pausing for another international break, the primary objective of which will be hoping our increasingly injury-affected squad survives intact. If we do somehow pull off a miraculous comeback against Arsenal, we will have a Champions League semi-final to squeeze in - but if not, we will return to just one more game in April, away to Everton in the WSL.
