My girlfriend [32F] and I [33M] are hosting a Memorial Day potluck tomorrow. We’re expecting probably 40-60 people. It’s BYOB but we’re providing mixers. Between non-drinkers and people making mixed drinks, we expect to go through a lot of soda. A while back, we wound up with a 12-pack of Aldi-brand Diet Coke from an Instacart order when they were out of normal Diet Coke. We also have a couple of 2-liter bottles and some normal cans of on-brand Diet Coke. For context, my girlfriend is a Diet Coke fiend and drinks at least two cans daily (it’s her main source of caffeine). As a result, our house is well-stocked with Diet Coke. I’m not a big soda drinker so I almost never have any, especially not at home. She is adamant that we should not serve the off-brand stuff to guests, as it’s tacky and inconsiderate—some people are REALLY passionate about Diet Coke, and when hosting an event, we want our guests to have the best. I agree with not wanting to serve something subpar to our guests, but given that she hasn’t even tried the Aldi brand, I don’t think it makes sense to assume that it’s inferior (or even different enough to tell). I haven’t tried it either. Given that I barely drink soda, she thinks we should just throw it out, but I think that would be wasteful. After some back-and-forth, she seems open to the idea of putting out the brand-name Diet Coke first and then putting out the off-brand if we run out. I think it makes more sense to put both out from the start so that people who care about brand name can have it and those who don’t care can have the off-brand. She still thinks that would be cheap and would look bad; I think she’s being a bit of a snob and that she should give our friends some credit—most of them are down-to-earth and not especially judgmental. We’ve been together for over eight years. I can count on one hand the number of arguments we’ve had in that time. This is far and away the stupidest. Please help us resolve it. So I was on a Spirit flight earlier today and bought a Diet Coke mid-flight. I poured it into the cup and immediately noticed it tasted weird — like kinda flat and off. So I checked the bottom of the can and saw the best-by date: MAR2425. I called the flight attendant over and let him know it was expired (since today’s April 25, 2025), and he looks at the can for like a full minute… then goes, “This isn’t expired. It says 2425 — as in the year 2425. You’ve got so many years left.” Dude really thought my Diet Coke was good for another 400 years. Yes, even though Coke Zero has been out for nearly 20 years, I'm standing by this. There's no way in hell anyone can possibly believe that Diet Coke tastes better than Coke Zero. When I go to a restaurant, I want Coke Zero to be the default sugar-free Coke, not Diet Coke. So hi everyone, I have been addicted to coke as long as i can remember in my 30 years of life and for the last 3-4 years, i have been drinking 3-4 liters a day of diet coke. Should i be worried about my health? Edit 1: Wow, so many replies, thank you all for caring enough to comment. I literally read every one of it (currently im in between jobs and time is something i have). Maybe i should add, i dont only drink coke but also water too (a half a liter between every 1 liter of coke). Many of you asked about my tooth situation, yes I still have my teeth, almost all of them have cavities (figures, right). Im not obese nor overweight but this one had nothing to do with coke i guess. I dont drink diet coke because I worry about my weight, I simply prefer cola zero over others. Most of you asked about my kidneys, I dont know if they are okay but I pee a lot during the day (it could mostly about me drinking too many fluids during the day but I definitely should see a doctor about it). Some of you asked how i can sleep, i guess my body is stop reacting against caffeine cause i really sleep well. Again, thank you all for your answers and concerns. I just want to share something that helped me during my weight loss struggle, that might help others. During my weight loss journey, I would often crave fast food. When I was much larger, fast food to me meant going to spend 20 bucks on a combo meal, an extra burger, large fries, etc... I really indulged. And always felt guilty. A small victory for me was being able to go to a drive through, and simply order a burger. No combo, no going wild with it. Just a burger. It satisfied the craving, and felt like a victory because I defeated the mindset of "if I'm cheating, I may as well go all in!" Going out and having an 800 calorie burger and diet coke, is much better than turning that same outing into a 2000+ calorie combo meal or binge. It also helps create a healthier relationship with food, and feels like a major testiment to my willpower. Now I can simply have 2 Oreos without destroying half the box. Small victories like this really transition into a much more successful and easier diet in my opinion. I'm not sure if this will apply to everyone, but try it! Next time you get a craving, don't deny it. Being half japanese, I take a trip to Japan every two years with my dad to visit relatives, sightseeing etc. Unfortunately I was never actually taught Japanese so having my dad there with me is super useful when I need assistance. On our trips my dad usually takes a day to go hangout with his old friends (we live in the US) and usually leaves me at our hotel or whatever. Today was one of those days. While laying in bed watching Pewdiepie’s minecraft videos I got quite hungry and thought to myself “I can go down to the convenience store and get some snacks by myself right?” Normally, yes. So I take a couple thousand yen that my dad left me and walk to the nearest family mart (for those of you who don’t know it’s a japanese convenience store.) I browse the shelves a bit and up buying a bento meal, mentos, and a diet coke. Checking out goes fine since I don’t really need to communicate, just hand over money. So as I walk back to my hotel in the middle of a crowded sidewalk my dumbass decided to pop a few mentos in my mouth just because. So I suck on those for a while and than without even thinking about the consequences I take a HUGE swig of diet coke, like so big that i can’t swallow all of it and it’s just sitting in my mouth. Than all of a sudden so feel a very weird foaming in my mouth. Than it hits me. I remember the experiments I did in elementary school, the crazy russian hacker vids, etc. That was the very moment I knew I fucked up. So before I can think literally anything else it’s foaming out of my mouth and I choke a little and end up just spewing out this diet coke foam. So obviously the people around me notice and come up to me and start speaking japanese. And of course I am sitting there, completely clueless. They were probably asking me if I needed help? I am dying of sheer embarrassment so I deadass just bolt back to my hotel with foam dripping down my face and clothes, im feeling sticky everywhere and life is not good. Once I get back to my hotel room and start to settle in I remember that I left my actual food on the sidewalk. So I just ended up starving until my dad came home and brought some leftovers.
