Which ones do you actually find good on the market besides Purina or Royal Canin? Henry is a 6 year old neutered bichon/toy poodle mix (21lbs) and had struggled with vomiting episodes almost daily when he was younger. Since giving him a daily probiotic (Bernie’s Perfect Poop) for the last couple of years, his vomiting is basically now nonexistent. In December 2025, Henry had cystotomy surgery to remove calcium oxalate bladder stones and is now on the Royal Canin Urinary S/O diet for stone prevention. We have since added potassium citrate to his diet as his pH level was 5.0 and outside the goal range of 6.0-7.5 and no crystals were found in his most recent urinalysis. My vet recommends sticking to the S/O diet exclusively, but I’ve seen how much of a difference a probiotic has helped Henry’s vomiting issues. I’m scared to stop the probiotic that has helped him so much, especially since a possible side effect of the potassium citrate is vomiting and diarrhea, but I also want to do what I can to prevent more stones forming. Royal Canin does have a probiotic powder that they say they trust to use in dogs prone to forming calcium oxalate stones, but it is significantly more expensive than the probiotic he’s currently taking. It’s hard to know where to draw the line on trying to prevent stones but also not recreating the vomiting issues Henry’s dealt with in the past, all while trying to pay for all of the expenses related to prescription diets and repeat testing. I emailed with Bernie’s Perfect Poop customer service, and they say they are not aware of anything in it that would contribute to bladder stone formation, and included the following relevant nutrient values per tablespoon of Bernie’s Perfect Poop: Protein: 0.34 g Calcium: 10.04 mg Potassium: 26 mg Magnesium: 5.02 mg Sodium: 3.65 mg Phosphorus: 10.04 mg Is there any other probiotic that may be an option for dogs prone to calcium oxalate bladder stones? Turns out, most of the products sold online don’t even come close to that. May iba na only contain 500 million CFUs, and worse, some don’t list any CFU count at all - just vague "active ingredients." Medyo nakakagulat, ‘no? Also, CFUs daw naturally decrease over time, especially if the product isn't properly sealed. It's possible daw na it will affect the potency. Ngayon, I am trying to check probitics for dogs with considerations in mind. My vet recommended a dermatologist as nothing has been helping my dog's allergies over the last 6 months. At the Derm appointment the "treatment plan" was keep monthly cytopoint injections, keep Royal Kanin Hypo diet, stop Hills hypo treats, stop neoprene powder, come back in 2 months. Well she is worse after 2 weeks. I sent pictures of my dog to the derm yesterday, with no fur on her paws, very red jaw area, red vulva area, all the derm said was oh that looks terrible, bring her back next week. The first derm appointment was $400 and I don't have another $400 for zero results. Could probiotics help?? I feel it can't get worse at this point...I don't want to return her to the shelter after only 6 months but I can't keep running up credit card debt. Hi! Long time lurker first time poster. My dog is 15. I have known her since her birth. Within the past two years she is steadily losing weight. She used to be 65 pounds, now she is 55. The vet says she is ok, bloodwork is fine blah blah. Took her to another vet, same thing. 😤😤 they just say she is old. 😞☹️ But she is soooo skinny. I feed her 2.5 pounds of food a day. ( i weight it) plus treats and table scraps. She also requests treats and i give her more. If i give her too much food, throughout the day, she will vomit. I want to give her more, but her composition won’t allow it. I make her food, as she has alot of allergies. Her food consists of boiled quinoa with pork, i add fruit and vegetable powder, and a powder probiotic. Treats are sweet potato and chicken jerky, she has a daily skin coat vitamin supplements. She is HIGHLY allergic to any fish/shellfish. She drinks a mix of coconut water and water. Her coat, teeth, breath are beautiful.
